Todd Herremans and Brent Celek bar 879 No More – Now There’s a Restaurant in the Works

Sorry you Gorgeous fans, I will write up Sunday’s event tomorrow. Today I worked on a column in Philly.com on The 109th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Awards Dinner, and now I have to run out for another gig.
********************************************************************************
Back in 2011 two of our favorite Philadelphia Eagles, Todd Herremans and Brent Celek were tired of going to other peoples bars and decided to open up one that fit their specifications which they called 879, (which is a combination of their jersey numbers) in 2010. I was there for their 2nd grand opening in 2012 (PhillyChitChat was there)

I ran into Todd Herremans with with his lovely lady Elizabeth Dee (wearing Helmut Lang,) last night at The 109th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Awards Dinner, which was held at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill (He was honored with the “Good Guy Award” for his philanthropic deeds in his community in Michigan where he grew up (read all about it in my Philly.com column link below). He returns there in a few weeks, so look for some fun ice fishing tweets like last year.) It’s a new day as the bff’s (Todd & Brent) have closed 879. They plan on opening a restaurant in the same space in late Spring. Look for a bistro, which is a small restaurant serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. As of last night Todd didn’t know what the name of the restaurant would be, and I vaguely remember chatting with Brent when they came up with the 879 name and the signage, so this time I’m suggesting:
Bistro 879
Their Twitter account remains active so look for updates here.

Oh I just love this photo of Heidi and Cole Hamels with Jimmy Rollins giving me a great shot. I have another fun one with Charlie Manuel & Ruban in it in my Philly.Com column today with news of the new baby that Heidi & Cole Hamels adopting a baby girl on Christmas Eve, Reeve. Keep checking the site til the column appears. Lots of fun stuff in there, especially about The Hamels. I spoke with Johari Rollins and she tells me that Jimmy is excited about going to Spring Training, but first he’s heading out on the road as he was selected for the Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.  Team USA will gather at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick complex
in Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 1 and open its leg of the tournament
against Mexico at Chase Field in Phoenix on March 8. Canada and Italy
are the other two teams in its bracket. The final is scheduled to be
played at San Francisco’s AT&T Park on March 19.

Kerry O’Connor, Pens & Lens  & The Weekly Press, wearing Bernie Parents 1974 Stanley Cup Champion Ring. Bernie said it was the first time in 40 years any one asked to wear it. Now let’s not start a trend. Wait, 40 years? Holy cow just about. Hi Maria Papadakis’ photo bombing the photo.

Devotion Nightclub (Formerly Shampoo) Grand Opening with SuperStar

The moment you’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived, folks: Devotion has opened and it’s Philadelphia’s newest dance club. For years you knew it as Shampoo, the cavernous, but music pumping dance hall which attracted folks from the tri-state area. I spent many a Friday night dancing the night away. Remember those crazy foam parties. Who ever thought that up? Of course it was really a ploy just to get everyone naked, and well it was fun for the most part, I think. I can’t remember.  Anyway those days are behind us and now as SuperStar  is a new monthly LGBT night The party, co-produced by Bruce Yelk, SuperStar will be similar to FriGay’s, Shampoo’s LGBT event.

Superstar hosts Noel Zayas and Bruce Yelk

Look for the new club to have new furniture, bar tops, finishes, and an updated projection system to make each of the parties promoted there something special.

PS I see that Devotion Vodka might have had an influence in the naming of the club, like I mentioned last night. As there was an hour open bar with Devotion Vodka. I say not a coincidence.

THE ACADEMY BALL IN PHOTOS & LINK TO MY PHILLY MAG COLUMN

Saturday night was a magical night, a memory I will cherish forever. I have some pretty terrific friends, and it was so nice to spend an enchanted evening with them. Here are a few cell phone pixs I took of the evening with a link to my column at PhillyMag at the end, or you can go see the shots now HERE>
Please LIKE the Page over at PhillyMag, everytime I check it out I silently say “YOU like me, You Really Like Me!” The stories on PhillyMag you won’t read anywhere else. The article took me about 12 hours to write so I hope you enjoy it. It’s always been the most beautiful event in the City, but to spend it with the people on this page really made it special. These peeps have my back. (Missing: Kristyn Aldrich and Maria Papadakis)

Marisa Magnatta, Vasiliki Tsiouris, Moi (I finally look like my caricature on PhillyMag), Christie Honigman and Katie English.

Teresa Nino – She wasnt in the room when we took the above shot.

Stunning: Jaclyn Foglietta and Jeffrey Flynn

One of the reasons these early shots are from my phone, is I forgot my memory card. As if Mike Toub wasn’t already the best Life Partner in the world, he had driven me to the AKA for the pre-pre party, was waiting outside and did me a huge favor and ran home to get my memory card. The part that makes him super special is he had to go in my cluttered office and figure out where I put them. Love that guy. (Hey can we get gay marriage in Pa soon, we really want to get married here and not in NY or NJ)

Dana and Ron Donatucci

I’ve lost 10lbs in 20 days since I gave up sugar, candy, cookies, cakes & the bread basket. So don’t even offer me any. Thanks.
There’s a no photo rule after dinner is served, so I put my camera to bed and I danced the night away. Eddie Bruce and his band (CTO Artist) kept me on the dance floor for two hours straight. Thanks to Adrienne Simpson (r) for being an awesome partner, as well as Mrs Joan Spain, Renee Freeman and Tony Frick

As is with tradition we all headed over to the Union League for light snacks and recapping of the night. Oh what a beautiful night. But wait go check out my column in PhillyMag to see the who, what, when and wear of the evening. AND great stories, tidbits and an engagement.
Sorry I couldn’t get all of you in the column. But who knows where those photos might show up.

Miley Cyrus’ Philly Producers Get Caught Up in Chris Brown/Frank Ocean Parking Spot Fight

You’ve probably heard by now that bad boy Chris Brown has gotten into another dust up, this time it was Frank Ocean, and TMZ says it was over a parking spot.

Well what I know is all hell broke loose:  Chris Brown was at Westlake Studio in the L.A. area listening to one of the
artists he represents. The sources say as Chris went to leave, Frank
Ocean
and his crew blocked Chris from leaving. The sources say Frank
said, “This is my studio, this is my parking spot.”  Caught up in the all out brawl were Philly music producers  Ronny FLIP Colson (above left with Pop Wansel ‏ [r])and Trunie Wreck who were working alongside Pop Wansel in the same building. (I first met them last month when they were working on Miley Cyrus’ new CD at Sigma Sound. Now they’ve moved the production out to LA to put the finishes touches on the new CD which should drop this spring. (& working on other projects) Ronny FLIP Colson has a mix tape coming out soon called SourDonuts

anyway… I saw this tweet and reached out to the guys for a statement.

What a great night! Chris Brown and Frank Ocean fight at the studio and and get handcuffed for it!! Lmaoooo!!
Seems everything was cool until Frank Ocean’s guy.
Yo funny shit is I tried to dip soon as I seen the cops til frank man pointed me out I got handled like an animal

I asked Flippa what happened and he said he and his brother just went outside for some air and the next thing you know they were caught up in this bust up and the cops put them in handcuffs, and gave them a banana for some odd reason. Flippa didn’t want to go into detail on why he thought the LAPD did that, you don’t mess around with those guys. (our conversation was longer than the above tweet, that was just the first contact)

I ain’t mad @ em though I just really don’t fuck with LAPD
I think Frank Ocean owes an apology to these guys who were obviously just getting some air.
I learned a new term, one which is “leaking”, which means
bleeding. Seems Frank Ocean cut his finger and there was blood places.
Frank later tweeted that he’s only going to be able to use two fingers
to play during the Grammy’s on February 10. I heard sauce used a couple times in their tweets, but I still can’t figure out that term. Anyone?
But the dope part bout this whole situation was that squally didn’t care bout the weed..I love LA..

(reminds me of one of my favorite songs.)

Snowy Friday Surprises & Santa Hats

Finally snow. If there’s anything a photographer loves it’s the falling snow, then right after that we want virgin snow ie no yellow snow or footprints

I went to the Bellevue yesterday to grab some lunch, when I came out at 4PM it had begun to snow and the streets were covered all ready. I was pleasantly surprised.

I ran over to the Shops at Liberty Place to pick up my tails for tonight’s Academy Ball, and saw this young lady slip on the snow. Chivarly is not dead as her boyfriend lifted her up in his arms to finish carrying her across the street.

Then I met up with my friend fashion blogger/stylist Ian Michael Crumm to explore the city in snow with our cameras. After we grabbed a bite to eat we headed out to my favorite spot, Rittenhouse Sq. (arggh footprints all over) Oh well the trees were still full of the fluffy stuff, the sidewalk was wet, people filled the park and it was great.
In theory I love this shot on the phone, but do you think it’s too blurry?

This is my favorite spot in Rittenhouse Square, the Tribute to Love Statue.

In past year’s I have festoned it with Santa hat’s and sent them out as Christmas cards.

Actually nothing was sacred in that park that day. I never liked the shot of the Lion with the hat on, and well it was too icy in the fountain for me to decorated the Duck Lady.

City Lights. I never get tired of shooting the Square.

Then we headed home. Couldn’t believe the snow at the Rodin Museum remained virtially untouched on the grounds on the museum and I was able to get some great shots. Check out this new application that just came out. It’s going to revolutionize Social Media. This I can handle.

It’s only available for IPhone now, and Mike tells me that in a month or so it will be available for Adnroid phones. OK so IPhone wins this round, but can they swap out a battery like I can?
Ian and I experimented with the new medium. He had a great idea to capture,
we didn’t realize it had volume though. Now we do.
Check out the shot I took of  Ian Michael Crumm on the steps of the Rodin.
