The Academy Ball Concert and Gala – Saturday January 24, 2015 More Photos and The Phila Mag Link

Saturday night was the Academy Ball, an event I used to read about in Ruth Seltzer’s Society Column in the Philadelphia Inquirer when I was growing up. I was that kid that read the society pages, and for someone that had an aversion to a suit and tie, I was fascinated by the white tie idea.

Fast forward to adulthood and here I am, not only do I get to cover it, but I get to go to it and take a “date”. Mike never wants to go, he’s fascinated like I am. Last year I took Ian Crumm, this year I went with everyone’s BFF

Kory Aversa

Before the concert there is the Chairman’s Pre-Concert Reception, which is a great place for the society photographers to get their shots. I went in with the mind set I need 20 amazing, unique shots for my column in Philadelphia Magazine. Another periodical I read growing up, checking out the photos and now calling my own. You don’t know how humbling, and amazing it is to have that responsibility and I take it seriously. (At the same time I think OMG I was a paralegal, I planned to always be one, how did I get here?)

I had a heck of the time the other day picking out photos to run in my PhillyMag column, everyone looked great and had a story.
Usually I try and pick people who are real standouts, have a story, haven’t been in the column in at least 3 months, and anticipate if they are going to be in an upcoming column (Friday night is the Black Tie Car Show, then there’s the Flower Show). Rachel Moore on the right is in the column with her gorgeous gold Oscar de la Renta dress. I positioned her so that you could see her gorgeous bow on her dress in a nearby mirror. But here’s the dress in full color, in the magazine I had to lighten the photo as the mirror was dark. At the bottom of this entry I’ll have a link.
I love Monique Crawford, but this photo was just wrong with the photo bomber on the right and that not very pretty jacketed person over her shoulder. I wish we weren’t near the stairs. Anyway Monique is wearing one of the big signature colors of the night, gorgeous green.
Scott Quigley, Monique, Alissa Higgins and Matthew Higgings. (Don’t count these photos out from appearing in Philly Mag hard copy though. I sometimes pull from PhillyChitChat to go into the magazine.)
My boss, David Lipson and his always stylish wife Susan.
Anne Callahan and Charles Croce style standouts every year.
Sandy and George Norcross. They were supposed to be in my column, but like Anne and Charles above, I forgot to upload them. So bummed. Love their style.

The concert was terrific, originally I was sitting inside, but when the photo above this happened I slipped outside and shot it through the window in door, as there are rules about shooting after a certain time inside the hall. I’ve shot through the window at other times too. I really needed the photo of everyone, including the chairs on the stage. I had forgotten that happened. The complete photo is on Philly Mag

This year they did something really creative and added entertainment as ball guests made their way from the Academy of Music to the Bellevue:

I basically bum-rushed the elevator, he’s

told them to relax. I said “Al, I’m not into selfies, I’d rather have a

agree about selfies, they breed vanity.” What a guy. Unforgettable!

I adored this photo, but I chose another shot of someone sitting. Photo tip: Sitting photos never make it in the magazine. Sometimes I will take one of each, sitting and standing and will add the standing one to the magazine. This time I had so many shots to choose from and I know I’ll see these two soon.

So many great people in this photo. Oh and there’s Rachel Moore’s Oscar de la Renta and her bow. So many people wore Oscar as a tribute to him at the Academy Ball.

I wear my sunglasses at night. There’s his 33 year old girlfriend Lucila Sola next to him. I love that Debbie Aldelman got this shot, but I dont think it’s posed.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS)  held a Winter Social for their Man & Woman of the Year campaign on January 22, 2015 at the Sonesta Hotel in Center City Philadelphia. The fun-filled
evening included current and past Man & Woman of the Year candidates and high-level volunteers.

Agreeing to utilize their leadership abilities to conduct their own fundraising campaign
for LLS, the Man & Woman of the Year candidates compete in honor of a local boy and girl who care blood cancer survivors to raise the most funds for blood cancer research. Every dollar counts as one vote and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of the 10-week campaign. The top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles. It kinda reminds me of Celebrity Apprentice as each Man and Women is responsible to raise as much money as possible in order to win, by any means possible, sponsorships, their own fundraisers, one year someone even had a bake sale. It’s hard and it’s not for everyone as you have to being a shaker and find ways to raise money.

Random Photos of the Week, with Tidbits, Gossip – Mamou & Green Line Cafe Closed, West Elm Demo Store and Favorite Meals

Good Thursday Morning. I have compiled a few photos I have tweeted or instagramed, and some that have never seen the light of day. I’m dropping some news here, as well as featuring some of my favorite meals of the week. Have a safe, warm day. HughE

The Green Line Cafe is closed at 136 South 15th Street.

The sign says they will be adding another location in West Philly, and exploring a possibility of another location in Center City. They still have other locations in West Philly for you to enjoy.

Mamou (formerly The Corner) 102 S 13th St in Midtown Village is closed. The sign says it’s being renovated until January 10, 2015.

I took this photo on January 10, and I’ve checked on it every day since and it doesn’t seem renovated or open. I don’t know why The Corner or Marmou haven’t done well at this location, it’s the hottest street in the City (13th Street btwn Walnut and Chestnut), I really like it a lot, the food and the roof deck. I’m sure it won’t be closed for long.

Did you know that the #WestElm on #ChestnutSt
is the demo store for the nation. It’s always one season ahead of the
other West Elm stores. At Christmas it was Spring. They only had the tiniest section for Christmas available and it was behind a pillar.

See it’s summer now. When the time comes the others stores
have to set up exactly like this store is laid out. This is the store
you see in the catalog too. Last week when I walked by they were shooting the catalog.
This is the best dish in the whole city #Casonsei it has smoked ricotta @luke_palladino @alexholleytv #Palladino @eastpassyunk #Foodporn
Then there’s this veal dish I had at D’Angelo’s last night. It’s on the restaurant menu. $35 for 4 courses. WOW.
The snowcast frightened everyone, there was hardly a person in Rittenhouse Square at 7PM last night.
Seriously delicious. The Broccoli soup at Bank & Boubon at 12th and Market Streets. It’s on the restaurant week menu, but also on their regular menu.
The Young Friends of the Academy Ball preparing the sponsor books for the underwriters in preparation for the Academy Ball on Saturday.
Braums is now open on East Passyunk Ave
Chicken and Waffles at City Tap House Logan Square. The best chicken ever.

The seafood cobb salad at McCormick & Schmidt’s at One South Broad. Delicious, pretty and $22

Did you know if you took a photo of your coat check ticket, you can get your coat. I do this because I always misplace mine. I wish I could do it for my parking ticket.

Oh look, the Cheesecake Factory at 15th and Walnut is coming a long very nicely. I see Windex doing a good business here.

Alicia DiMichele to Close Her Stores in Cherry Hill and East Passyunk

Alicia DiMichele opened her East Passyunk store “Addiction Boutique” in June 2013 to much fan fare, and among rumors that she’d be starring in the upcoming season of Mob Wives.

The store was a big success, as was her turn on mob wives. She was, and is a personable person, garnering many fans and supporters as they saw her life unfold on TV. Her business exploded, with fans turning into custormers who purchased bought into her brand of cutting edge, sexy, New York street fashion designs at both her east Passyunk and Cherry Hill stores, as well as online.

Alicia went through many life changes on just one season of Mob Wives, and decided it wasn’t how she wanted to live her life; she’s raising a family, running a business and Mob Wives took a lot of time away from the life she wanted to live, so she left the show. But the fans stayed with her, and she interacts with them everyday online which is really nice. I ran into her Saturday night at Hair of the Dog, she told me about her plans for the new year.

In 2015, she’s about to embark on another big move. She’s closing both her “Addicted” East Passyunk and Cherry Hill clothing stores, re-branding her company, launching a clothing line and

opening a new store February 1 at the Promenade in Marlton called “Alicia DiMichele“.

Tonight see her at The Pool after dark where you can see her new spring new clothing line.

Sylvester Stallone Runs Through Philadelphia – Creed Casting – Celebrity Sighting Tips

Sylvester Stallone Runs Through Philadelphia – The Actor is in town to Start Filming Creed, which starts filming next Monday 1/26/15. Last week he was at DIVE in Society Hill doing test shots for the upcoming follow up to the Rocky movie series. DIVE  is the Visual Effects and Picture Finishing division of Shooters Inc., a national leader in commercial production, postproduction and broadcast design.

Saturday night Sly stopped by D’Angelo’s for dinner at 256 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Several fans recognized him but he asked if they could wait til after dinner, at which time he posed with them outside the delicious Italian restaurant located in Rittenhouse Square. This photo will be added to the fame wall which already includes Robert DeNiro and Tommy Lasorda. You’ll recall that this was also a favorite dining place for Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus.

Creed is a story that finds Rocky Balboa acting as a trainer and mentor to the grandson of his fellow boxing alumni, Apollo Creed. But before we get into where else Sly went let me tell you who else is in this film so you can be on the look out for these celebs walking around town.

Remember this guy from Ghost, he’s also one of the most prolific character actors in the biz. Did you know he was in Carlito’s Way and Boogie Nights. So be on the lookout for Luis Guzmán and tweet me your selfies to @IPhillyChitChat and I’ll print them here.
Sexy Tessa Thompson has been in a lot of our favorite TV shows like: Copper, Veronica Mars and Heroes.
Will Blagrove’s star has been on the rise for awhile now, but with Creed and the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” with Ben Affleck, which will blow his career up.
Michael B. Jordan or as Alex Holley likes to call him, her next husband. Jordan was in town in December doing his test shots at DIVE during that time. When he was here he could be found at Fox & The Hound. I hear he was really nice and posed with fans. He appeared on All My Children in 2006, overlapping in scenes with Will Blagrove, so look for them to hang out a bit. Jordon just finished shooting “The Fantastic Four” and has already been tapped for the followup sequel, so now is the time to see him up close and personal as his star is headed for the stratosphere, and in “Creed” he’s in the starring role as “Adonis Creed.”
Speaking of stratosphere, Mrs. Huxtable Phylicia Rashad has just been added to the cast as Adonis Creed’s mom Mary Anne Creed. The chances of seeing her are slim as the last time she was in town filming the TV series “Do No Harm” for a whole season, she was low key. She did get her nails done at the same Sansom Street salon every week, and occasional grabbed a bite at a.kitchen, but otherwise there were very little sightings. Hopefully that changes this time.
After leaving D’Angelo’s on Saturday night,  Sly and his friends headed to the 1925 Cocktail Lounge(formerly G Lounge).
He and his friends hung out in the vault, which you will recall was christened by Meek Mills and Nicki Minaj last week.
The Italian Stallion is 68 years old.

Friday night he had dinner as Estia at Broad and Locust and posed with the banquet coordinator and manager. (A man after my own heart, a guy who likes to wear black, two nights in a row.)
The best photo has to be the one that showed up on Reddit.
The photo has over 1.5 million views since it was posted on Sunday. WOW. Rocky lives , he’s our hometown hero. I hope you get a chance to get a selfie with him.

HAIR OF THE DOG 2015 GALA PHOTOS, AND LINKS TO COLUMNS

Saturday night was the 21st Annual Hair of the Dog Gala. This year’s event was definitely the best, and the party lived up to all the hype you’ve ever heard about the event and more. Dan, Rob, Buffy and Ryann all deserve a big Thank You and standing O for putting together a super party with lots to do and see.

Everyone took their dress very seriously and really looked stunning, they were hot, and happening, but I did include a few hot messes, see if you can find them.I worked ridiculously hard on this columns as it took about 15 hours to comb through the photos and find just the perfect 25 for each column; then describe them and write a column. PLEASE LIKE THE COLUMNS at Both PhillyMag and Philly.com Thanks (if you like them) Tickets range from $100 to $300 and range from GA which is still a really good deal, open bar, food, dancing, to $300 bottle service, a mini lounge area and top of the shelf food with prime rib, turkey, pasta and salad.

Thanks so much for allowing me to photograph you, sorry I do not send the photos out. If you don’t see your photo here, the next time I see you out mention that and you have a good chance of appearing in a future column. Also I will have one more column in Philly Style Magazine later this week with another 15 photos.

Saturday night’s Hair O’ The Dog Gala http://po.st/I6b18p  at Philly dot Com

Debbie Smith and DJ Paola Shea of CBS’s Big Brother

The photos I place on Philly Mag were more about the gorgeous and daring dresses that some of the ladies wore;
