Urban Village Brewery at Schmidt’s Commons AKA Piazza

Hey guys, sorry for the abbreviated posts the next few days. I was under a tight deadline as I prepared to head to a wonderful Alaskan cruise, which I am on right now. Follow me on Instagram @PhillyChitChat to see pixs as I can post as there isn’t much internet connection I hear. But in port I will post up a storm.   Thanks to Cabot Cheese for honoring me for my charity work, it’s a joy to volunteer for Komen Philly, Linda Creed, Suicide Awareness, PAWS, Philadelphia Veterans Home to name a few. Every year Cabot Cheese Foundation honors one person from every state and its territories for volunteer charity work. I try and do something for every charity that sends me a press release, or asks me for promotion, but the ones I named above are ones I donate photography services or raise money for for the past couple years, Linda Creed, Suicide Awareness Philly and Gilda’s Club I have volunteered for for nearly 7 years.  I did do a PhillyChitChat post everyday, so still pop in. Thanks

On the eve of their big opening Urban Village Brewery held a friends and press preview dinner. I arrived a tad after it started, and didn’t have time to eat but I will say that everyone I spoke with LOVED the food. An evening of craft beer brewed on-site and paired with delicious breads and  brick oven pizzas made from naturally fermented yeast dough – a first for  Philadelphia. Cancer Support Community Congratulates Brian Kappra

The Cancer Support Community of Greater Philadelphia celebrated it’s 18th Annual Evening in the Park on the grounds of their headquarters earlier in May at The Suzanne Morgan Center at Ridgeland in Fairmount Park. I normally photograph the event but I was already booked photographing the Fairmount Conservancy Gala on the opposite side of the park. Guests enjoyed fabulous food and cocktails by Joshua’s Catering, a live and and a silent auction which raised additional funds, all to benefit CSCGP. The funds raised will help children attend camp this summer, enable us to expand our STAC program in area schools, support our music, art and movement programs, and allow more kids and parents access to our free kids and parents support groups.

The furnishings displayed on the roof this year are the result of an open call to the maker and  design community. Interested parties were invited to submit their portfolio for an opportunity to  design and create a new collection of furniture which will be used and enjoyed on the rooftop  this summer. From over 25 entries, 8 submissions were selected to create tables, benches,  stools, chairs, high tops and more over an 8-week period through a collaborative and open  workshop-based process. Participants ranged from recent graduates to artist collectives to  seasoned furniture designers and architecture practices. The final pieces range from the  traditional to the unexpected and include works by KSS Architects in collaboration with  studioRON (the above piece of furniture), artist collaborative studio Traction Company, the Dufala Brothers, and designer  Jeff Rubio.

JD Rivera, Kevin Hart, Mike Schmidt, Roots Picnic , Save The Date, Dana Spain Married

JD Rivera, Kevin Hart, Mike Schmidt, Roots Picnic , Save The Date, Dana Spain Married

Good Sunday, hope you are having an enjoyable weekend.  Here’s another edition of Philly Gossip, tidbits and Save The Date’s for events I think you might enjoy attending. Also just want to tell you I’m leaving for Alaska this week, don’t fret I’ve filled Philly Chit Chat up with blog posts so keep coming back every day for photos and food for thought. Last summer Cabot Cheese surprised me with a cruise to Alaska with 50 or so more charitable minding folks. Seems my friend Marilyn Russell nominated me for the Cabot Cheese program for the charitable work I have done over the years with the Linda Creed Foundation, PAWS, Donors Are Hero’s, Gilda’s Club,  American Foundation of Suicide Awareness all of which I’ve volunteered for 6 plus years. And then the more recent organizations – MANNA, Komen Philadelphia, Comfort Home For Veterans, Living Beyond Breast Cancer and many more which I promote through my various social outlets.  Even charities who hire me to photograph their events, I try and give back in ways that go beyond my reasonable rates. I’m excited to meet other volunteers from around the country. I also volunteer for Cabot Cheese Foundation, participating in their annual poker tournament every summer at the Borgata for the past 3 years. We Honor Volunteers & Support Communities Our Department of Gratitude reflects the values of the farm families who own Cabot Creamery Cooperative.

JD Rivera
Congrats to Philly boxer and hometown hero JD Rivera, Rivera beat the odds to go pro and moved to Philly because of its rich boxing history. His career in the ring has been full of hard knocks, but the sport has given him a new lease on life. That’s why Rivera does what he can through his gym, the Warrior Boxing Academy, to make boxing accessible to working class folks in his community of South Philadelphia. New equipment was sponsored by Coors Light they believe in celebrating the journey of those who see challenges as opportunities, which is why we chose to feature Rivera as part of our digital short documentary series, “My Climb, My Story.” The film series features individuals across the country who conquer their personal mountains to better themselves and their communities.

JD Rivera
I was so busy this week, but really wanted to go to this all day radio marathon – the All Star Day Live! featured 97.5 The Fanatic’s All Star Personalities and Celebrity Contributors Live, On-Site, for an all-day broadcast at Commerce Square. There was food & beverage specials from Pagano’s, fun & games, and meet & greet pictures with celebrity athletes including Jaws above, fresh off of the NFLDraft. Their goal was to promote, fund-raise and help further AACR’s Mission:
The mission of the American Association for Cancer Research is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication, and collaboration. Through its programs and services, the AACR fosters research in cancer and related biomedical science; accelerates the dissemination of new research findings among scientists and others dedicated to the conquest of cancer; promotes science education and training; and advances the understanding of cancer etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment throughout the world.

Congrats Allie and Steve!!

Thank you Mike Schmidt in your efforts to prevent skin cancer. Take it from someone who is a candidate, who sometimes forgets the importance of sunscreen, or it wears off during the day. What an amazing idea to have sunscreen dispensers through out Philly. I love that they’re yellow too. The dispensers will be located at City Hall, on Kelly Drive near Lloyd Hall and at CBP Phillies home
