DAY OF THE DEAD AT DISTRITO

PHILADELPHIA, PA – On Tuesday, November 2 beginning at 2:30 pm, modern Mexican restaurant
and bar Distrito (3945 Chestnut Street, 215-222-1657) will host a festive Day of the Dead Celebration. Featuring
two floors of fun, including DJs, face painters, affordable street food snacks and a special Herradura tequila dinner,
it will be a vibrant celebration of the traditional Mexican holiday.
“We look forward to hosting a lively party to honor Mexico’s cultural heritage – and enjoy some great food
and drink,” says owner Chef Jose Garces. “From cocktails and nibbles to a sit-down tequila pairing dinner, we’ve
got a variety of ways to enjoy the day.”
Day of the Dead specials will be offered on both floors. Downstairs at The Cantina, the celebration will
include street food specials such as: Esquites, sweet corn with queso fresco and chipotle mayo ($3); Nachos
Ignacio, with black beans, poblano, queso mixto and pickled jalapenos ($7); and assorted Alambres, or skewers,
including hanger steak, shrimp and chicken ($6 to $7). Cans of Tecate and Modelo Especial will be available for $2
each, Dos Equis Amber and Lager will be offered as $4 draughts and specialty cocktails will be priced at $5. At 9
p.m., two DJs will spin and face painters will adorn revelers faces with “Day of the Dead” skulls.
Beginning at 8 pm, Distrito will offer a Day of the Day Herradura Tequila Dinner in their private dining
room. Space is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended. The dinner, which will cost $65 per person not
including tax or gratituty, will begin with a cocktail reception, followed by a delectable menu paired with tequilas
including: Warm Lobster Cappucino with guajillos; Hiramasa Ceviche with blood ornage segments, radish,
lime, jalapenos and micro arugula; Red Chile and Pork Tamale with Oaxacan black mole; Braised Goat with
smoked bacon black beans and citrus salad; and Chocolate Flan.
A portion of the proceeds from the Day of the Day celebration will benefit Puentes de Salud. Puentes de
Salud is a non-profit organization that promotes the well-being of Philadelphia’s Latinos through low-cost, high-
quality health care, community development and innovative education programs which reflect evolving partnerships
among individuals, community organizations, and academic institutions.

Distrito’s menu of fresh interpretations of classic Mexican fare, striking décor including a hot pink and
bright green color scheme, a wall constructed from over 600 colorful, campy masks of lucha libre and a booth crafted
from a Volkswagen Beetle, has been featuring in Food & Wine, GQ, Glamour and Bon Appetit which noted, “the
menu is pitch perfect.” In its annual “Best of” issues, Philadelphia Magazine voted Distrito “Modern Mexican
2010” and “Best Restaurant 2009.” Distrito and was included on Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List 2009 as one of
the world’s top 50 restaurants. In 2008, Esquire magazine named Distrito among the best new restaurants in the
country, while locally, The Philadelphia Inquirer named them best overall new restaurant of 2008.
Distrito is located at 3945 Chestnut Street, in West Philadelphia’s bustling University City neighborhood.
It is open for dinner seven days a week, starting a 5 p.m. Lunch is served Monday through Friday, and a weekend
