Komen Phila “More Than Pink” Walk Bravely Through the Rain

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day yesterday. I loved looking at all the photos of folks with their mom. My family celebrated at my niece’s graduation from UNC Asheville while I photographed the Komen Philadelphia Mother’s Day Walk as I have been volunteering to do for the past 4 years in honor of my mom, my mother in law and my birth mother, all who were survivors of breast cancer.

The alarm went off at 7am, I looked out the window and it was pouring. I asked Alexa what the temperature was – a dismal 50F, yikes.

I threw on my shorts, my pinkish shirt and duck boots and headed out the door and was pleasantly surprised, they came in the name of HER, their loved ones.

Formerly known as the Race for the Cure this year Komen Philadelphia renamed their annual Mother’s Day gathering to More Than Pink Walk, with the mission still the same to raise funds in order to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths.

Another changed they instituted this year was fencing off the Parkway, instituting a registration fee of $35 to participate in the fundraiser, because in the past the Race for the Cure became more of an outing for families, and revenue was lost as people weren’t raising funds to participate they would just show up. It is a fundraiser after to end breast cancer, and support breast cancer programs managed by Komen Philadelphia. That is why it’s More Than Pink, it’s about raising funds.

It was a risk, which paid off despite the dreary weather. We walk because they can’t walk. No doubt it’ll be a bigger success when rain doesn’t dampen the turnout next time.

Over $300,000 was raised by 4,300 donors. More Photos at CBSPhilly.
