BERNADETTE PETERS STOPS BY THE PHILADELPHIA LIBRARY

Bernadette Peters stopped by the Philadelphia Library Book Fair earlier this month, and today her book “Broadway Barks” is ranked in at #5 on the Sunday NY Times Children’s Best Seller List this week. A long time advocate for pet adoption, Bernadette, and fellow actress Mary Tyler Moore started the organization Broadway Barks! The book, authored by Peters, with illustrations by Liz Murphy, is published by Blue Apple Books and is the star’s first foray into the publishing world.

The book, is loosely based on how she adopted her dog Kramer and comes with a CD of an original song she wrote about him.
Although I thought it was about her husband who was killed in a crash 3 years ago, but I am sure it is inspired by him, I mean if it was about her loved husband, how could she sing it when his life was cut so short by death. There’s was a NYC love story. She told the Philadelphia City Paper in 2000 that she met her future husband in front of her Manhattan apartment building one night, as she was waiting for a date that was late. “Michael was on his way to a charity event and was in a tuxedo,” she remembered. “So he walked up to me, a stranger, and said: ‘Are you ready to go?’ How’s that for a sense of confidence and a sense of humor?”
Bernadette says that her goal is to spread the word and to try and get cities to declare themselves “No kill Cities”, and instead encouraging people to adopt pets.
Each year Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore hold a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon, benefiting New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies. The event is produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA. This year’s will be held on July 12 in Shubert Alley. Here are a few pictures from the event in 2006.
