Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars to benefit Sickle Cell Anemia 4/18/10

Last year a young up and coming Megan Smith Principle of Brownstone PR, had an idea. She wanted to bring the excitement of the popular ABC TV show “Dancing with the Stars” to Philadelphia, and she wanted to tie it in as a charity fundraiser to bring awareness and support to a disease that has affected her family and friends she has known, Sickle Cell Anemia. She created Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars, and it was a smashing success. Jimmy “Style” Contreras and Audrey Julienne doing the “Quick Step” at last year’s contest. The list of this years contestant’s is below with tidbits of each person. Here’s Megan with the March issue of Black Enterprise which features an article about successful African Americans and it includes a story about Megan. Congrats girl!! for ticket info: CMW@LeaveIt2Mia – Sen Larry Farnese you’ll recall attended last year’s event. I thought maybe to check it out in case he wanted to hoof it out this year, but that will not be the case, instead I hear he’s set to be a judge. (Maybe a foreshadowing of the future?)
Public television cooking show host Christina Pirello is the woman who put the fun back into healthy cooking. In one of her books, Christina Cooks she’s responded to the hundreds of questions that her viewers and readers have put to her over the years-with lots of sound, sane advice, hints, tips and techniques-plus loads of great recipes for scrumptious, healthy meals with a Mediterranean flair.
Charitable entrepreneur Dana Spain, with Center City District’s Michelle Shannon at a recent Nicole Miller fundraiser. Dana Spain is the founder and President of Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), the city’s largest rescue partner which operates an adoption center and a public low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinic. She also sits on the boards of the Philadelphia Police Department Foundation, AND she’s going to be dancing in the Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars
G-N Kang, co-host of Wired 96.5’s Chio in the Morning and a player on the newly formed Philadelphia Lingerie Football team Here’s G-N’s take on her upcoming star turn on the Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars on her blog
I have to laugh as she starts out by saying she doesn’t consider herself being a star, which is ironic as this was the very first photo I took of her when I moved back to Philly from NYC where I did cover peeps who would be considered a star. Anyway, having read about her in the gossip columns and listening to her on the radio, I bee lined to her when I saw her at an event and got her to pose for this “fashion shot” cause as far as Philly is concerned she’s a celebrity I tried to convince her. The photo was picked up by a national blog about radio chicks.
AAhh baby you’re a star to me. Sabrina Tamburino Thorne. Do I need to say anything more. First of all Sabrina is one of the most vivasious, fun women in Philly, full of life, active and sweet as can be. And did I mention charitable, she and her giving husband attend many charity events where their money makes a difference in peoples live. Now that’s a star to me. Plus she’s fun to photograph in a Kim Kardashian kinda way.
Maxx Stoyanoff-Williams, lead singer/MC, of Black Landlord. According to Suite 101, Black Landlord’s first full-length album “Addicted to Distraction” fuses funky big-band brass with Motown soul and Hip-Hop. The result: an eclectic musical tirade.
Making a special appearance last year’s winner Erin Elmore who will perform a little number and hand over the title to the 2010 winner of Philadelphia Dancing with the Stars.
The purpose behind Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars is to not only recognize over 25 years of extraordinary service by SCDAA/PDVC, but also assist in raising money to fund Sickle Cell education and programs, and shine the spotlight on a genetic disease that exists in staggeringly high numbers in the African American and Hispanic communities.
Tickets are $90. The official event site will also launch this Monday, March 1. In the meantime, be sure to follow at and friend us on Facebook “Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars” for all updates!
