PHILADELPHIA Snow Emergency Updates

Snow Emergency Updates
  • The Philadelphia Eagles games scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Sunday has been postponed until Tuesday, Dec. 28.
  • The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) instituted a $5 snow rate at their Center City garages from 2:00 p.m. today until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. Vehicles entering after 2:00 p.m. Sunday can remain there until 6:00 p.m. Monday without additional charges. Vehicles entering after 8:00 a.m. Monday will be charged the normal rates. PPA owned lots are located at:
    • 5th and Market streets
    • 2nd and Samson streets
    • 10th and Filbert streets
    • 8th and Filbert streets
    • 10th and Ludlow streets
    • 16th and JFK streets
  • The 3-1-1 Call Center is open and will remain open into the overnight hours.
  • The Philadelphia International Airport is open and operational; however, more than 300 flights have been canceled.
  • Philadelphia Prisons have canceled all visiting hours for Monday, December 27.

Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced today that the City declared a Snow Emergency as of 2 p.m. today. To coordinate the City’s snow emergency response, the Managing Director’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) activated the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on Sunday at 12 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, NJ. issued a Winter Storm Warning from 7 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday. If you must travel, visit the Winter Weather page for information on Winter Driving and the necessary items for a Vehicle Emergency Kit. Should you get stranded, remember to stay with your vehicle.

Mayor Nutter said, “With many people traveling home after the Christmas holiday, we expect heavier than normal traffic on Sunday. We urge travelers to get an early start on Sunday morning and to refrain from driving during the height of the storm. By keeping the roads clear from traffic, will allow our crews to do an effective job of plowing the snow. If you must travel and for fans going to the Eagles game on Sunday, we urge you to use public transportation.”
All vehicles parked on Snow Emergency Routes must be moved to alternate parking locations. Vehicles remaining on Snow Emergency Routes during the declared Snow Emergency will be ticketed and the City will begin towing vehicles starting at 2 p.m. A list of snow emergency routes is attached and can also be found at http://www.phila.gov/streets/Snow_Emergency.html.

Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson stated that Streets Department crews will apply a brine solution to area roadways. Salt crews and equipment will be deployed throughout the City to respond to the precipitation. Crews will remain on duty to monitor roadways and to respond to problem locations and emergencies.

Prepare for the winter weather with these tips:

  • Apply any commercial de-icer on steps and sidewalks early to prevent residual moisture from freezing over and creating icy conditions.
  • Clear a sidewalk path at least 36” wide within 6 hours of the end of the storm as listed in the Philadelphia Code (10-720).
  • Clear snow from neighborhood sewer drains to allow melting snow to drain.
  • Be conscious of the environment – use de-icing salts only as much as needed. One pound of de-icer can cover 100 to 200 square feet.
  • Salt should be applied as soon as a light accumulation has developed on the surface. This will break the bond between additional accumulations and the pavement surface, and will make it easier to shovel.
  • A final light application of a de-icer may be required after removal is completed to melt the residual snow.
  • Make sure you park your car as far away from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner limit the turning radius of salting vehicles.
  • Stay tuned to local media for further updates.
  • Check on sick and elderly neighbors.
  • Bring your pets indoors.

To report a street in need of salting or plowing or for more information on any Streets Department program or service, call 3-1-1. You may also visit the Streets Department online at www.phila.gov/streets.

The City’s Code Blue remains in effect to provide additional support to the homeless. If you see a homeless person in need of assistance, please call the Homeless Outreach Coordination Center at 215-232-1984.

Deputy Mayor for Health and Opportunity and Health Commissioner Donald Schwarz reminds Philadelphians to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their neighbors from injuries and accidents common in winter weather:

  • Warm up with some stretching exercises inside.
  • Start slowly and pace yourself. Shovel no more than five loads a minute; don’t shovel for more than 15 minutes without taking a break. Pause to stretch every five minutes by standing up straight. Don’t feel the job has to get done in one session.
  • Push the snow. Don’t lift. If you must lift, use your legs not your back.
  • Drink during breaks to avoid dehydration.
  • Never throw over your shoulder. Twisting can strain the back.
  • Dress warmly in layers with a hat. Cover your neck.
  • Take smaller scoops of snow, keeping them light and small.
  • Take a break if you’re beginning to sweat. Bodies lose heat faster in damp clothes, which makes you more prone to injury.
  • Don’t smoke or eat a heavy meal before shoveling. It’s harder on the heart.
  • Don’t hold your breath; this makes your heart rate and blood pressure rise
  • In an emergency, call a doctor, or 911 for a medic unit, or go to an emergency room. Until medical help arrives, protect someone suffering from exposure to the cold with extra blankets and clothing.

Deputy Managing Director for Emergency Management Liam O’Keefe encourages Philadelphians to stay tuned to local media for updates. You can also visit the Office of Emergency Management’s website to sign up for emergency alerts, weather updates and transportation delays from ReadyNotifyPA, and follow OEM on our social media sites, all of which are available on the OEM website at www.phila.gov/ready.

ISGRO ENGAGEMENT & RANDOM SHOTS OF Fa La La La Laaaaaa

MERRY CHRISTMAS; RANDOM SHOTS OF Fa La La La Laaaaaa
My charity of the week is Sacred Heart for the Terminally Ill in Philadelphia. I have been donating money to them for the past 3 years at Christmas, if you have $10 or more consider a donation. They provide hospice services for free in a loving atmosphere.

Lauren O’Dorisio took this shot this morning at Isgro, where people traditionally stand in line on Christmas Eve for all their dessert goodies to eat, especially at the Italian tradition seven fishes dinner (which my sister cooks)
Today the line was extra special warm and fuzzy as Joshua Alcorn who popped the question to Brianna D’Amico in front the sweet place. Congratulations you two, here with Gus Isgro, who says the wedding cake is on him! (Brianna is my friend Lisa Gaudio’s daughter and Jersey Boy’s Bob Gaudio, writer of many of the fantastic songs of the Four Seasons.)
The Lobby of my office building. If you are on twitter you know I was complaining about the antlers on this “doe”. They were cracked and one was broken. Maybe the powers to be read my tweets or just wised up and they removed the antlers.
Christmas Village is open today. Sadly I never got to shop there even once as I was so busy in December covering all the parties and well my day job takes up a large chunk of time too.
But I did run through it the other afternoon after shooting Kate Gosselin and brood on the Rocky Steps.
Oh Christmas Tree

My favorite shot of me taken by Christopher Gabello Studios. Monique Crawford is Santa’s Helper
My mom has had this Santa all my life and when she displays it I know it’s Christmas time
Oh Christmas Tree
Happy Holidays to all

On the look out for Santa
My paralegal job’s lobby is so beautiful. I took this last night. Maybe next year it should be our holiday card. Merry Merry Christmas and see you on Monday. 12/27/10 (I’ll be at work, so I know some of youse will be there too. I used up all my vacation time.) I have things to tell, stories to write and news to break in the New Year. Have a fantastic time this weekend. Maybe we’ll have a white day after Christmas so I can get more shots like the one above.

Kate Gosselin runs up the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum with her children being filmed for her TV show

Yesterday I got an assignment from a national magazine that I contribute to that at some point in the day Reading, Pa’s reality star, who just made news in all the glossies that she changed her hairstyle, Kate Gosselin and her brood of 8 would be running up the Art Museum Steps, “The Rocky Steps”. After waiting several hours the magic happened. That’s Dancing with the Stars Kate Gosselin on the right, chatting on her cell phone as she ascends the steps. I have no idea why she needed to chat with anyone cause her entire family was with her including her “bodyguard” who tried to prevent me from shooting these pictures.Kate’s been absent from the TLC airwaves for a couple months, except when she appeared on Sarah Palin’s reality show recently on the same network. The Palin’s and Gosselin’s went camping. Kate left before the day was out exclaiming the most notable dialog since Jessica Simpson asked if there was chicken in Chicken of the Sea tuna? Kate said to Sarah Palin as they were setting up the campsite, “Why would anyone purposely be homeless.” As she compared going camping as the same as being homeless. Last Spring there was a promise of a new show called “A Twist of Kate”, which was presented to the advertisers in NYC at the Upfronts, but so far there’s been no indication it was filming until yesterday.

Originally I was going to break this story with permission from the magazine, which I received, on my NBC10 Non-Stop Channel, but I was preempted this morning by a breaking news story, and having lost the exclusive story on Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez a few weeks back I wasn’t going to wait out this one so here are a few of the pictures, but I will have additional information regarding her filming in filming in the City for my TV segment that appears every night on Comcast Ch 248, or 10.2, that goes along with these pictures for when I film my segment tomorrow. (The night before Kate and the 8 were at the Flyer’s game, according to the 700 Level.)

Sam Katz: Philadelphia: the Great Experiment

Philadelphia businessman and former mayoral candidate Sam Katz, screened his documentary film project Philadelphia: the Great Experiment at the
Philadelphia History Museum which formerly re-opens next year. You know I’m in heaven about this museum and that Sam Katz is a producer on a documentary on Philadelphia. (I am a huge Philadelphia book, postcard, photograph and everything Philly collector, so this movie is right up my ally. [I feel stress about getting the grammar right on this entry as an editor and film maker might stop by to read it. Feel free to help me out.)
The Philadelphia History Museum used to be called the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia History, but underwent a name change as well as an extensive renovation. Before I recall the museum was dark and jammed packed with objects important in the history of Philadelphia. Now it’s light, airy and roomy. As the museum isn’t officially opened yet, the only room I saw was the renovated meeting room, gone are the view obstructing columns, now there are clear sight lines, and a new sound system. Also you have to check out the new flooring, a full scale map of Philadelphia. Really amazing to see the City on that scale. Can’t wait to see the rest of the museum when it opens next year.
Tom McGrath, Editor of Philadelphia Magazine and Sam Katz did a Q&A after the screening of the 30 minute film which depicts the earlier start of Philadelphia, as well as the significant race and religion divide in the City occurring at the time.

For two years, the businessman and former mayoral candidate led a 126-member team that researched hundreds of years of Philadelphia’s past and kept returning to a period from 1865 to 1876 when the city underwent changes that affect it today. Although the museum is still under renovations, they are holding talks and Q&A’s if you would like to join in. Just check their website for information.

You’ll recall that last January Jimmy Rollins donated several pieces to the new museum at a ceremony at the Visitors Center: http://www.phillychitchat.com/2010/01/jimmy-rollins-class-act-donates.html Sam hopes showing the film will create a buzz that encourages grants and foundation funding for seven one-hour films covering all of the city’s history. Each hour, with its educational features and webisodes for the Internet, costs $700,000 to produce. Visit his website to see how you can help, or schedule a showing at your organization. Philadelphia Lunar Eclipse 2AM til 3AM

The Lunar Eclipse was well worth staying up for, but I guess it’s really not that much of a stretch for me as I am a night owl already.at 2AM I went out to see where we were at. i was following along on the Chile space watch so I had a pretty good idea as Chile is just below us I think, but warmer.

for awhile it was just like a 1/2 moon, 1/4 moon thing, so my mind began to wander
I thought what the heck pattern is that on the Cira Center? It seriously looked like Oh No Mr Bill from SNL, but then I realized I was tired, cold and seeing things.
Back to the show
Oh wait I can see the art museum parking garage from the front of my building, that’s pretty cool to see a Frank Gehry so close.
We’re getting there…

Oh then I thought foreground shots would look nice.
If I wasn’t so lazy I would have crossed the street, laid on the ground and had the art museum in the foreground.
I was getting artsy here, probably not though, huh?
Goose bump time
This was shot with a flash
This was without a flash
So worth it:-) The End and I went to bed. Well first I did this blog entry.

MARK SEGAL’S HOLIDAY PARTY WITH GUEST OF HONOR U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy On the Historic Night that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed.

According to Philly.com “U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy had just left the Flyers game Saturday when his cell phone rang in the parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center. “Patrick,” the voice on the phone said, “this is Barack.” President Obama was calling to congratulate Murphy on the Senate vote repealing the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, ending a 17-year battle over the role of gays and lesbians in the military.
“Today, we finally closed the books on the discriminatory ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy that hurt our national security and ran counter to our national values,” Murphy said. The Bucks County Democrat, who lost his bid for reelection in November, will be at the White House this week, when Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.”AFTER that he went to Mark Segal’s Annual Holiday Party where the crowd erupted in cheers on his arrival. After a few words he joined Governor Rendell, Mayor Nutter, Representative Robert Brady, Councilman DiCicco and DA Seth Williams in singing Christmas songs along with the Philadelphia Gay Chorus. Murphy tells me he leaves office Jan 2, 2011 and starts at Fox Rothschild on Jan 3, 2011

I Heard a RUMOR About A new Nightclub, but this one’s East of Broad Street

Last month Foobooz wrote that the Valanni/Mercato/Varga team was hiring a new staff for their new concept nightclub an undisclosed location as the powers to be were mum. I was driving by recently and noticed something different at Valanni’s. A little research andnow I’m here to tell you that the tables and chairs have been moved out and the disco balls have moved into the expanded space at Valanni’s. It’s now called “Social” at Valanni

They are just finishing up the white walls and shining their balls. Look for the opening in January.
