DoGooder Awards – My Philly Mag Link – And A Few Thoughts

Thanks to the Do Gooder committee and everyone I’ve ever photographer and has allowed me to tell their story on my blog. I am so honored to be recognized in this manner, and thrilled someone could surprise me in such a touching way. It was great receiving the award from the Mayor and I was touched by all the nice things he said as well as how funny the delivery was, as always by him.

Thanks to Kevin Colahan and David Gloss from Here’s My Chance,
two great people with a magnificent idea, after my own heart. Because for me it’s all about doing good by other where PhillyChitChat.com is concerned. I may write about people, but the underlying focus for me is the charities I cover. I remember the first year I covered charities, I didn’t get a lot of readers, it’s when I focused on the people who went, their stories, lives and the gossip/tidbits they shared, is when I really started getting the readership, and was able to get the message out about all the great charities that touch peoples lives.

Thanks to Skai Blue Media, and to all the people I might not know who were involved with this award. To my friends, many of who were there last night, which I thought was odd, even though they are all Good Doers.

Finally, thank you to my life partner Mike Toub, who encourages me, supports me, challenges me, and loves me through all my moods.

Here’s my column at Philly Mag and I have to say it could have been better as I’m still on cloud 9 and my concentration is shot. Thanks again everyone.

http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/2013/02/22/photos-philadelphia-dogooder-awards/

Plus I have more photos on Philly.com, of the evening. It’s great to have these two powerful outlets to get the message out on all the good things that Philly has to offer, and what people are doing.

Have a great weekend. Follow me on Instagram: PhillyChitChat or on twitter @iphillychitchat for my whereabouts this weekend. Tonight I’m hitting up Kembrel, Replica Creative and U.S.US 1 year anniversary party. Then heading to Ela with friends to celebrate.Saturday is the Valentine to the Market, then Sunday is the Oscar party at the Ritz-Carlton at 6PM. Have a safe weekend. HughE

The King of East Passyunk Avenue & Nice Things Handmade

Earlier this month I headed over to East Passyunk Avenue to meet Kory Aversa for dinner. Kory is the king of East Passyunk Ave. He is a passionate supporter of all things Passyunk. You just can’t meet him for dinner, as he just naturally wants to talk about his favorite neighborhood, give you the lowdown and all the great things coming up. You’re stomach may be growling for grub, but he’s so persuasive and how a tour of all the going ons and what the East Passyunk Business Improvement District and what Queen Renee Gilinger are up to.

The night I visited, 2nd Saturday was winding down. 2nd Saturday is East Passyunk’s answer to Old City’s First Friday. The stores are open later in the evening. There’s wine cheese and special exhibits, art openings etc. I arrived as Kory was making his rounds, taking photos for facebook and chronicling the night. He said you have to come check out this cool store called “Nice Things Handmade”  at 1731 E Passyunk Ave

Elissa K Kara, Owner/Artist of Nice Things Handmade and Jennifer Nonas, a therapist/artist who is surviving cancer.

Kara decided to host a fundraiser to raise funds to assist Jennifer in her medical bills/living expenses. Since Valentine’s Day was coming up she solicited artist friends to create these cute ornamental hearts. I bought a couple, they were so cute.

Jesse Sweet, Amber Zaraza, Soozie Savage and Kim Mason

Chris Guerrer, Rogue Theory, Amy Buller – B Goods and Paul Buller, who created Hipster Bingo

Hipster Bingo. You take it to a coffee store and every time you spot a hipster you check off one of the squares. It’s a good time killer, especially during writers block.

I found this item to be interesting. It’s an octopus mobile created by an artist of leftover crochet material her mother left unfinished when she passed away from cancer. I remember Judy (my sister) had a lot of left over projects when she died, I’m not sure what happened to it, but this is a good idea to do. We had dinner at BIRRA. It was delicious and a good time.

What else is coming up on East Passyunk Avenue
East Passyunk Restaurant Week
When: Sunday, February 24-Saturday, March 2
Where: Participating East Passyunk restaurants
Cost: $15-$35

Longport NJ Pre & Post Sandy Photos at 11th Street

Yesterday I wanted to go out for a drive. I hadn’t been down to Longport since before Sandy hit and I wanted to go check out my sister’s house as well as 11th Street. My sister’s house is being renovated so I won’t be showing any of those pixs. There was minor damage that was still visible. The Rite Aid was still closed, as well as the Wawa.

There was still sand bags near doorways, and a few signs for Sandy to stay away. There were a lot of Sunday drivers, looking for summer rentals and storm damage. Here are a series of photos of before Sandy and after Sandy. Most of the damage done by Sandy was interior, and since I’ve seen my sisters house, and she was a block from the bay, I would say these houses suffered immensely.

  Day before Sandy Hit
Day before Sandy Hit – Those bushes are gone now, which is not a surprise
Yesterday. These were two houses that were on the news where you saw water surround the grand piano.
  Day before Sandy Hit
Yesterday. The hurrican shutter seemed to work on the house closest to the right, but not on the windows to the immediate left of them.

a lot of the reef rocks are missing from 11st Street. A few were in the street.
 Day before Sandy Hit

Yesterday. Every house had a dumpster outside
The beach and dunes are gone now.

All of these houses had water on the first floor.

 Atlantic City in the background.

Many of the high rises on the island are still without power as their electrical equipment was on the first floor.  This one had a generator operating it. There are a few bayside that are still operating on generators.

I had to get back to the City, but wanted to take a scenic drive through Ocean City. Caught this biker on the bridge. Yes I was driving when I shot this, don’t tell Mike he gets so bent out of shape when I do those things.

 Cute toll collector.

Last night I headed over to Keven Parker’s Grand Opening of his Soul Food Cafe at Reading Terminal. I did a little Philly.com column about it, check it out here.

Mondo Magic at the Hotel Palomar on Valentine’s Day

Last night I photographed Project Runway All Stars winner Mondo Guerra at a party held at the Hotel Palomar in Center City. It was a party where people dressed to impress this Valentine’s Day.
In case your not familiar with Mondo, he was a contestant on the 10th season of Project Runway. During the season there’s a
custom print challenge. Contestants on the reality television show have
pulled inspiration for their designs from childhood memories,
relationships and pop culture, and the resulting patterns have been
nostalgic, raw and abstract.
They are also extremely personal, as was
evidenced on national TV during the 10th challenge
of Season Eight in 2010. Armando Thomas “Mondo”
Guerra courageously told the judges that his pattern – bright, bold
plus signs – had been inspired by his HIV+ status, and that he had been
keeping it a secret for nearly a decade. Even his closest friends and
family were surprised. It was a pivotal moment for the young fashion
designer, who went on to win ProjectRunway All-Stars two years later and
has been designing limited edition t-shirts
and merchandise to benefit HIV/AIDS organizations around the world as
his company has grown.

The Project Runway alum designed a limited-edition t-shirt for
2013, which he unveiled at the party held in his honor. The shirt is
available at the ActionAIDS website.

Michael Byrne, Treasurer  Director of Development ActionAIDS, Mondo and Kevin J. Burns, LCSW Executive Director of Action AIDS

Dean Evans, Chief Marketing Officer at Subaru of America (r)

Many fans of the show came out to show their support for Mondo
Elicia Gonzales, GALAEI executive director, Heshie Zinman and David Fischer
Kevin J. Burns, LCSW Executive Director of Action AIDS and Donald Carter
Josh Middleton, G Philly and Alan Graves

 Wayne Knaub and Rex Rotosch
Rex want’s you to know about Fire and Ice’s new Drag Brunch every third Sunday. Check out info
here.

Julie Schollenberg and Nigel Richards, 611 Lifestyle (Hubby of Nicole Cashman. Cashman & Associates represent Hotel Palomar and help to execute this party.)

Miss Summer Clearance and Miss Stormy Weathers

Mondo addresses the crowd (as Kevin Burns looks on) and discusses how important getting the message out about HIV/AIDS awareness is, as well as finding a cure. He shared his personal story about coming out to the Project Runway judges and how on the day he did so, his beloved grandmother Betty, who had passed away a decade ago, was standing there with him in spirit.

Afterwards there was a mini fashion show with the tees. He did a salt & pepper graphic, and the ladies wore spoons and forks. Check PhillyMag.com for photos of the ladies.

They charitably had the models throw them into the adoring crowd.

Larry Toft and Natasa Toft. I asked them what their favorite romantic song was on this Valentine Day and they said “Am I Blue”

Malikah Upchurch (http://askmissa.com/) and Derron Upchurch
  Denette Stetler and Denaire Paproth

Congrats to Joann Leszczyhsky who won two of the big time raffle items last night, with her was equally excited for her Courtney Dunn and Rhona Goldfein, all of the AIDS Law Project.

Travis Breen,  Director of Sales and Marketing at Kimpton Hotels and Rachel McGowan, Area Group Rooms Coordinator at Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants

 Last
year, more than 200 participating restaurants across the Delaware
Valley raised more than a quarter of a million dollars. Locally, nearly
20,000 people areliving
with HIV/AIDS, and the rate of new infections is about four times the
national average. At the same time, government HIV/AIDS prevention
funding has been drastically cut. Your support for this event will
enable us to deliver life changing services, including
“treatment as prevention” – a proven approach to creating the first
AIDS-free generation.
Mondo and Matthew Vlahos, Vlahos PR
Vlahos PR is having their annual Oscar Party at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on 2/23/13
In
1991, an ActionAIDS volunteer turned to a group of Philadelphia
restaurateurs to develop a new event to respond to the devastation the
epidemic had on that close
knit community. Through the generous participation of foodies,
volunteers, corporate sponsors and the restaurants themselves Dining Out
for Life quickly became a “must do” event in Philadelphia. Shortly
thereafter, ActionAIDS created a new non-profit, Dining
Out for Life International, & sold the trademark to the group in
order to allow other organizations dedicated to the fight against HIV
AIDS to benefit from this great event. Today, DOFL is held in more than
60 cities in North America, includes 3,500 restaurants
and raises nearly $4 million annually.
The
monies raised stay in each respective community and are used to fund
care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential AIDS
services. In addition
to ActionAIDS, the monies raised help AIDS Delaware, Family and
Community Service of Delaware County, and Planned Parenthood of
Southeastern Pennsylvania (PPSEPA).

A
complete list of participating restaurants will be available in
mid-March. For more information in the meantime, call 1-877-EAT4LIF (1-877-328-4543) or go www.diningoutforlife.com/Philadelphia.(PS Sorry these are so late, I shot the event for the Hotel and had to prep the pics for them first. That means if your photo isn’t on these pages, they could still show up in other media outlets.)
