We Stand with Orlando – The Philly Pride Parade 2016

I can’t begin to tell you the depth of my sadness for the lives that were destroyed in the name of someone’s god in Orlando on Sunday. The terrorists almost won my day as I just couldn’t bring myself to go to the annual Philly Pride Parade, an event I’ve been going to for decades, and I’m proud to bring to you each June. I finally arrived at 1:30PM, caught the end of the prideful bunch to pass Independence Hall, my favorite spot to watch, an iconic image that speaks to the founding of our country free from religious or no religious persecution.

Thomas Jefferson explained his support for religious freedom in practical terms: “(I)t does me no injury for my neighbor to believe in twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

Tonight at 6:30PM on the north side of Philadelphia City Hall there will be a vigil for those who were killed and injured in Orlando. I’m sorry I can’t be there as I am going to a family reunion, but I do hope there’s an enormous turnout so that we can show the world we will not let the terrorist put fear in our lives. I hope you will join me in New York City for the Pride Parade on June 26, to send a message to the terrorist that the United States will not cower in fear from hate, but send a message of love and light to all.

Last week was a crazy week for PhillyChitChat, I was super busy and didn’t get to my weekly Philly Gossip column, so here it is. Last weekend was a hot, hot, hot celebrity weekend. The Roots Picnic was going on as well as Wizard World, both of which brought lots of celebrities to town like Stanley Tucci, who was in town for Wizard World, who had dinner Friday night at Suga’s which I mentioned last week. Nearby was 6ABC’s Nydia Han who told me her group really wanted to invite him over for dessert. The next evening Tucci watched the sunset from The Logan’s Assembly Lounge, which overlooks the Parkway.

Usher was the headliner for the Root’s Picnic. When he arrived in town he headed to North Philly and got a cheesesteak at Max’s near Germantown Ave.

He posed for photos, and even sang with a few fans before he headed to Festival Pier for what I hear was an amazing, life changing set.

Meek Mill is a free man after 90 days of house arrest for a probation violation; guess he didn’t realize that is was spring cause he showed up to the Root’s Picnic to celebrate with his bae, Nicki Minaj, in black jeans and sweater.

When it got too hot to handle they headed to South Street which sent fans into a frenzy, to pick up a whole new outfit – tshirt, and white jeans, before heading back to the picnic and the rest of the concert.

The duo was low key all week until Wednesday, when I started getting lots of tips that they were dining at Devon seafood on Rittenhouse Square near midnight. Then the next day this picture popped up on Meek Mill’s Instagram.

Actor Shia LaBeouf’s latest project has him traveling across the country using his Twitter coordinates.

The project is called “Take Me Anywhere.” He teamed up with Vice News, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and the Finnish Institute in London.

LaBeouf and two artists use their GPS coordinates broadcast via Twitter to allow random strangers to pick them up and take them anywhere, all in the name of art.

Connor Barwin 3rd Annual Charity Concert at Union Transfer

Ya know I was at my BFF’s Christie Honigman Mandia’s wedding last Friday and I couldn’t make a handful of events in Philly over the weekend as I mentioned earlier this week. Here’s another gigantic, superstar charity event that is putting smiles on Philadelphian’s. For the third year in a row, Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl linebacker Connor Barwin and his Make The World Better (mtwb) Foundation hosted a benefit concert at Union Transfer. All proceeds from the concert on Friday, June 3rd were matched by Barwin through mtwb for a total of $200,000. The funds will be donated directly to the foundation’s next major park renovation project, announced at the concert, the revitalization of Waterloo Playground (2501 Waterloo Street) in the West Kensington section of Philadelphia. To date, mtwb Foundation has raised over $685,000 for park renovations in the City of Philadelphia.

We could not have a better partner in putting on these concerts,” said Barwin. “I also want to thank our all-Philly lineup of musicians Amos Lee, Waxahatchee, and Hop Along, as well as so many of my teammates for coming out. The sold-out concert featured a special surprise performance by acclaimed Philadelphia singer-songwriter Amos Lee and Philadelphia-based musicians Hop Along and Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield. Joining Barwin in the crowd of 1,300 were Eagles teammates Jason Kelce, Jordan Matthews, Brent Celek, Zach Ertz, Malcolm Jenkins, Jon Dorenbos, Trey Burton, Nelson Agholar, Cody Parkey, Beau Allen, Taylor Hart, Chris Maragos, Marcus Smith, Chase Daniels, Josh Huff, and Harold Carmichael. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, his wife Tina Lai, and new Eagles head coach Doug Pederson were also on hand to show their support. Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers and Union Transfer owner Sean Agnew relaxed with guests and dined at a pre-show barbecue reception which featured an array of grilled appetizers donated and cooked by James Beard Award-winning chef Marc Vetri of Philadelphia’s Vetri Family restaurants alongside special guest chef Kevin Sbraga.

According to Claire Laver, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Projects for mtwb and Urban Roots, “The revitalization of Waterloo Playground will begin with a community engagement process to identify key priorities for renovations, building off of the Community Design Collaborative’s Play Space Design Competition that featured this site as a case study last year. The playground currently features a pool, recreation center, play space, and two basketball courts.”

The mtwb Foundation, founded by Barwin in 2013, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Philadelphia’s youth by providing safe and fun places for artistic and athletic development.

When I stood between the two, they started rubbing my arms and touching my paint. Chris Hemsworth said “what is this!?” And when I claimed it would not come off, they started to rub me harder. The installation, at 251 DeKalb in King of Prussia, will be available to the public and features the work of Lisa Elmaleh and her stunning “Everglades” series. Lisa is currently an educator at the School of Visual Arts and the Center for Alternative Photography and best-known for her expertise in the alternative photographic processes invented in the 19th century.

These processes are labor intensive, time consuming, and not used by many emerging artists. , Lisa Elmaleh,“Everglades” series showcases the intricacy of South Florida’s landscapes and all of the photographs on display will be framed and readily available for purchase. The Everglades is my favorite National Park, and I’ve been there at least a dozen times. I’m going again in November. Great nature watching. Let’s see who was at the exhibition supporting Lisa….

I met Leigh Himes a few years ago, when I was first starting out in this business of covering events. She’s a bubbling young women, with an infectious smile, and warm personality.

Best CCD SIPS Instagram Photos From June 1 2016

Summer and Center City SIPS came back with a vengeance this week. I was crazy busy covering events today and didn’t have a chance to dedicate to cover as much ground to gage the crowds at SIPS. I did get to see the popular places uptown like Sky Beer Garten where Top of the Tower is teaming up with Brauhaus Schmitz to launch what they’re calling the highest beer garden in Philly – at the Top of the Tower, on the 51st Floor at 1717 Market Street. From there I got a shot of Uptown Beer Garden, which opened last week to big crowds, and continue this week with the same excitement. I really thought it would have been less crowded since right across the street is CHOPS, which for years has been the hot spot. Also popular uptown, is Marathon, which last week hosted the SIPS Preview Party, as if Philly needed a preview party especially as it seems we just got done St. Patrick’s Day, Mardis Gras and the longest beer crawl a few weeks ago. Marathon did not disapoint last night, as DJ Royale kept the party pumping til Midnight. I walked by about 945 and it was mass party with shirts and ties hanging off guys and girls wanting to find a place to eat. Then I passed Pagano’s, I underestimated it this year. In the past it’s been so-so, but it was still rocking when I passed about 10PM. I know my buddy DJ Eddie Tully was one of the DJ’s keeping the crowd humming. Dodgeball Tournament Raises Funds for the American Heart Association

Remember that one game you either loved or hated in your youth, well last week ContextMedia Health teamed up with Publicis Health Media to sponsor a Dodgeball Tournament to raise funds for the AHA (American Heart Association) last week at the Sporting Club in Center City.

Some of the participating teams names were Amazeballs, Dodging Diabetes, Don’t Stop Ballieving, Let Ballers be Ballers, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Penn Square Persecutors
