Party Photos: Salon Thalia, 1520 Locust St. Re-Opens Reinvigorated

On October 8, 2015, Salon Thalia
, one of Philly’s high-profile salon drew a buzzing crowd of for their
grand re-opening party hosted by owners . The sophisticated space
located 1520 Locust St., was renovated and renewed after a flood
destroyed their salon earlier in the year.

After working together for a decade, Maria Gallagher and Michael Kuhn Owners of Salon Thalia
decided to combine their talents and open their own salon in 2004.

After being at the Curtis Center building on the north side of Washington Square Park for over 9 years, an opportunity sprung up to re-locate the salon to the trendy Rittenhouse Area of Center City and after working out a few kinks, this location has been up and running since the beginning of 2013.
The salon has a luminous, ethereal look with luxurious details, Michael told me that after the flood,  they did change a few of the stations around to make the salon’s flow much more fluid while moving customers from one service to another, but it still retains the friendly service feel that they want customers to feel. We’re a family, and our clients are extended family.

Which long time client Roberta Kitchenoff would attest to.

Paula Deen Has Been Eliminated Dancing with the Stars’. On Saturday She Was At Valley Forge Casino

Southern lady Paula Deen is making a comeback, kicking up her heels on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars (I blush with some of her crazy antics on that show.), she has a new book out and she keeps commitments. This past weekend she flew into Philly to attend a meet and greet with fans at Valley Forge Casino’s The Venue. It was scheduled before it was announced that she’d be on Dancing With The Stars, so I was impressed that she didn’t cancel since the show is so intense. In fact she told me it was the hardest thing she had ever done.

Michael Groover (Deen’s husband), Paula Deen, and Chef Frank Benowitz do a demonstration at Valley Forge Casino Venue Center Saturday afternoon. Before the demo Chef Frank gave Paula a set of really nice knives. She said in her best southern drawl, thank you they are beautiful, but you’re going to have to mail them to me. I didn’t pack a bag. I flew in and need to fly out as soon as the show is over.
A nice crowd turned out to meet her
Since taking her diabetes seriously, Paula has lost 40 lbs in the past few years.
During the demonstration, where she prepared pork loin, she handed out bowls, spoons and cookie pans from her houseware collection. She’s handing this lady a cookie pan.
During the demonstration, where she prepared pork loin, she handed out bowls, spoons and cookie dishes from her housewares collection. She even gave the pork loin away to a gay couple who talked about being fans of her cook books and trying out her recipes.
Paula Deen Cuts the Fat: 250 Recipes Lightened Up
With fans
Before leaving to fly back to California, and Dancing With The Stars, Paula greeted guests at Valley Beach, which is the pool area at Valley Forge Casino. She did a Q&A and posed for selfies.
Remember tonight: She’ll be performing “Vogue” by Madonna sans
the cone bra. it’s the  MTV Music Awards Vogue version and Paula is going to be Marie Antoinette.

Margaret Cho started following me on Twitter.  She heard about my involvement with breaking the Gay Bashing story last year. She’s upset with the verdict and she wants to speak with the boys who were bashed. That was sweet. I put them in touch with each other. What happened was I saw a post on FB about the incident which happened to a friends friend. I put it on Twitter. I was immediately contacted by the media and I connected them to the people who could get them the info they needed.

Congrats to Scott Dougherty and Tom Doersam
Watch my friend Sandee Bengel on the Blacklist 10/22 with James Spader. She’s making moves and following her dreams.

The Grandest Party I Barely Attended. It might Be the Most Beautiful One I Ever Attended

A lot of life changing, beneficial moments are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year including the 25th anniversary of reunification of Germany,  NASA placing the Hubble Space Telescope in space, the Americans with Disabilities Act and founding of MANNA, Manna provides nourishing meals to people suffering from life-threatening illnesses and is helping folks right here in Philadelphia.

On
October 9th, MANNA threw the party of the year at the 23rd Street
Armory in Center City, Philadelphia in honor of Steven Korman and celebrated MANNA’s 25 years at the forefront of the Food is Medicine
movement.

Unfortunately I had already been booked a year out to photograph another event, but I did catch the last half hour to witness the spectacular room and capture some of the people enjoying the beautiful night. HONORARY CHAIRS of the evening were Governor Tom Wolf, Mayor Michael Nutter, Governor Ed Rendell, Wayne Newton. Yes that Wayne Newton, and no he didn’t sing but he did pose with everyone who asked.

Congrats to my buddy Tony Frick (r), who was on the committee of the event and did a fabulous job, here with his wife Alissa Frick (c), and friends Erin Como and Chris Smith.
It was great to see Erin too, who recently took a job at Fox Good Day in DC after spending a few years in Nashville.
Rob Saxon, Events & Volunteer Director and vavava voom Susan Daugherty,  MANNA Executive Director in winter white

The room was spectacularly decorated. Executed by Donna O’Brien from Beautiful Blooms, it was breathtaking with white flowers, and trees filling the cavernous 23rd street Armory.
There was plenty of lounge areas for people to sit and take in the scenses, as well as long communal tables to sit with friends in between dancing to the tunes of Eddie Bruce Band.
Angela Butler and Yvonne Blake, even as the party was winding down at ten pm, people were still mingling about.

Did I mention how gorgeous the room was?
Jeannine Pulito, Nicole Linehan, Maureen Fries and Rob Saxon
Mark S. Carrow, managing partner of Citrin Cooperman

Paul and Lily Rothman
Michael Rowlands, Emily Gallegher, Adrian Glass, Tonya Cooper, and Brian Lieb
Vivian Ghazarian and Matthew Bouloutain – Matt has designed the last 4 Shut Up and Dance posters, the Manna/PA Ballet dance event benefiting Manna. The duo’s first date was at a Shut Up and Dance event years earlier. The event happens in the spring time so look for tickets on sale then.
Susan and Dan DeCarlo

The Pie in the Sky campaign has kicked off, buy a pie for Thanksgiving, feed your family and support a meal for another family. Sweet!

The event production was over seen by two companies Event Strategy Group and Mole Street co-produced the 25th Anniversary Party. They oversee and connect the right people and vendors to create an awesome event. Brian LaPann, (Mole Street), Matt Blank (Event Strategy Group), Brendan Walsh (Mole Street), Andrew Campbell (Mole Street) and Brendan Shuff ( Event Strategy Group)

There were food stations, but I don’t have the details on that, sorry.
Nancy Welkert, Many Blumenthal and Linda Regnery

Breaking news MANNA is moving their headquarters to Rodin Place, at 21st and Hamilton Streets. It’ll be called the Steven Korman Nutrition Center. Opening date is January 2017

Ian M Crumm – Fashion Expert, Life Connoisseur Recomends The Best Local Shopping For You. Plus Happy Birthday Ian!!

Happy Birthday to Ian M Crumm, whose dreams are being heard.

Met this kid at age 19 who had a vision, talent and a drive. Fast forward a few years and he’s hosting events, where Actress Alysia Reiner, her husband, David Alan Basche, and her producing partner, Sarah Megan Thomas attended. The three are currently wrapping up the movie “Equity” which they filmed here this past summer. (Out and About)

Hotel Palomar celebrated the launch of the second Shop Like A Local Guide
in partnership with style expert, Ian Michael Crumm. The hotel works
with Ian to create a hyper-local shopping guide for guests, which lives
on the hotel’s website and also in a purse-sized booklet (as seen
below). It highlights stores with items popular with travelers like a
casual day dress or a pair of men’s dress shoes. The guide focuses on
items often left at home, but needed when traveling to another city.

After
Hotel Palomar’s Carolina Pino welcomed Ian to the stage to explain the
vision of this year’s guide, R&B sensation Miesa performed a few
numbers. Miesa kicked-off her multi-city “Suite Tour” with Kimpton
Hotels at the event delighting guests with songs from her debut album.

Hotel Palomar has once again teamed up with local lifestyle and fashion expert Ian Michael Crumm for his unique,  insider perspective on Philadelphia’s shopping scene. Crumm, an Instagram maven named one of “11 Philadelphia   Instagrams to Follow” by Philadelphia Style magazine, is a noted lifestyle blogger who also lends his prowess as a   contributing columnist to EDGE, Philly.com and the Details network. The Shop Like A Local Guide, Vol. II features   looks curated and styled by Crumm, stylish pairings he hand-selected from local retailers, salons, and boutiques.   Hotel Palomar’s art deco  design direction.

“When travelers stay with us, they are usually only here for a short period of time so we really want for them to   experience the best of what the city has to offer during their visit,” said Mark Hayes, General Manager of Hotel   Palomar Philadelphia. “Kimpton Hotels are recognized for their true local know-how, and our Shop Like A Local   Guide delivers on again, from one of the most trusted local sources in fashion and style.” All of the featured stores  are realistically located within walking distance of the hotel, making the guide not only beautiful but also useful   and accessible.”

Aside from offering styling suggestions in the Shop Like A Local Guide,
guests are also being encouraged to tweet style questions to Ian. Book a
hotel room and get a complimentary digital styling session via Twitter
and the Shop Like A Local Guide.

Some of Ian’s picks for shopping like a local” ellelauri for “Philadelphia-Designed, New York-Made Casul Wear”, Distanté for “Tailored Shirting,  Men’s Accessories and Custom Clothing,” and Duross & Langel for “Product Masters Open Full Service Salon”

Philadelphia’s style elite were there to
support. Jessica Green, Assistant Editor at Philadelphia Style Magazine,
brought her friend Dani Lessman to the event.

Aside from offering styling suggestions in the Shop Like A Local Guide,
guests are also being encouraged to tweet style questions to Ian. Book a

No wonder he’s so stylish, check out his mom in this photo with him. Follow Ian on his instagram to check out the latest in styles and buys he recommends

3601 Market Officially Opened – A Bathroom with a view of Center City, Salt Water Pool, and a Jimmy John’s

3601 Market officially opened earlier this month, a $110 million, 28-story residential tower,  363-unit apartment building developed by Southern Land Company, and the first of many projects they’re working on in Philadelphia.
Father/Son Tim Downey and Dustin Downey of Soutland, cut the ribbon at the grand opening with Joe Reagan of Wexford Science + Technology,
The resort style roof-top salt-water pool

featuring a fire pit, grilling area
and private lounges with outdoor televisions.
Brian Sewell, Paul Neuroth and PJ Littleton
Jazmin Singleton, Mark Dent, and Bianca Gee in a one bedroom
Janine LaMarca and Rebecca Devine, Co-Founder of Maven Communications.
 One bedrooms start at $1556, 2 bedrooms $2722 t o $3306
Jeremy Cyr, Vice President – Multifamily Development at Southern Land Company and Gretchen Mast, Landscape Architect at Southern Land Company

Julie Moreningstar, Michael Prifti, Robert Lubas, Nicole Dress and Jennifer Burnside
24-hour fitness center featuring top of the line Matrix equipment along with Yoga and Spin studios.
Michelle Allen, Dr. Ayana Allen (Ayana moved in in late Summer, and loves the building. The amenities and location are perfect for City living) and Annie McCormack, 6ABC reporter
Michael Yetterberd, Matt Ritsko and Brian Sewell

 David Erikson and Bonny Patel
Jesse Dayton, Jordan McKinney, Cindy Defrancesco and Rod Fortner of Southern Land Company
I love how interesting the juxtaposition of 3601 Market is, on a slant at the corner of 36th and Market Streets, with amazing views of the City. I liked the building too, it was modern, a little more spacious then you’d find in the Center City new high rises, and not horribly over priced. The location is great too, but there’s no need to travel into Center City proper as University City has really become a hot bed of development over the years near Drexel and UPenn. 3601 doesn’t accept undergrads either, so no crazy parties.
Tim Downey presented Kathy Desmonds, Peoples Emergency Center a $5,000 check for the organization that helps the underserved.

 Casey and Jason Kranning Rush

Did I mention the views this place has?

And then there’s the salt water pool. I asked why a salt water pool, they told me that it was the perfect pool to have to achieve Leed Certification, which they have. It’s very green.
3601 Market will feature a Jimmy John’s
and Dunkin’ Donuts as including Schmear It, fancy Asian restaurant called Danlu  and Herben Quality Eats, a fast-casual healthy food concept based out of the nearby Enterprise Center, and caterer for the evening.

Statement by the President on the Retirement of Commissioner Charles Ramsey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 14, 2015

Statement by the President on the Retirement of Commissioner Charles Ramsey

I want to
offer my heartfelt gratitude to Commissioner Charles “Chuck” Ramsey for
his nearly five decades of leadership and service with some of this
nation’s largest law enforcement agencies.
From Chicago to DC to Philadelphia, Commissioner Ramsey has always
supported our women and men in uniform and the communities they bravely
serve and protect each and every day. While I’ve known about his
outstanding work over the years, it was when I appointed
Chuck as a co-chair of my Task Force on 21st Century Policing that I
was able to rely on his counsel and leadership. For several months
earlier this year, he played a vital role in bringing together leaders
from across the country to create a clear and concise
report including key recommendations for building stronger trust
between communities and the law enforcement agencies that protect them.
I am extraordinarily grateful for Chuck’s service and wish him an
enjoyable and restful retirement.

More Whoopi & Raven-Symone at Valley Forge Casino Music Fair on Saturday Night

Yesterday I did a fun piece on Philly Mag about Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symone at Valley Forge Casino Music Fair on Saturday Night

Here’s a few more interesting tidbits. On Saturday night Whoopi met fans backstage before she hit the stage. Many of the fans brought gifts, and this young man, Quintin Mayfield, brought a story. He told Whoopi that they had met 10 years ago, at a the show “Wake Up With Whoopi” She was his “Make a Wish” as he was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Whoopi spent a lot of time with him and she signed the back of his photo for him. It was super sweet to witness this interaction.

Then I went all crazy girl fan on Whoopi. I watch her nearly everyday, and really appreciate her contributions to society. I’ve photographed her many times in NYC when I was a working celebrity photographer. She was always super sweet. Sad she’s had such a difficult year with deaths of great friends and mentors like Robin Williams and Mike Nichols. Then her mother and brother died within a few years of each other.

Whoopi water

Whoopi started out her act relating her brother’s death. Now you wouldn’t think that was funny, except how she was told and by who. It was her brother’s girlfriend, who was hysterical and seemed to be making a lot of familial decisions until Whoopi found out they were only dating for one month. It was a great delivery. Reminds me of the episode on Good Wife when Will dies, and Diane confronts an intern who’s been there for a week, crying hysterical. Diane fires her on the spot, less funny, but same principle.

Then there was a period, no pun intended, where Whoopi talked about menopause, vagina’s and dicks. That was less funny to me, but the crowd laughed uncomfortably, hysterically with husbands pointing at wives.

Then she tackled current affairs starting with Ben Carson, then Donald Trump, lots of laughs, even though the audience was split GOP/DEM. You’d be surprised how many Republican’s like Whoopi’s sense of humor.

At one point in the show, Whoopi stopped and pointed to an audience member and said “Lady stop recording the show. Put down your phone. This show is for you, it’s intimate, personal and it’s happening right now. Don’t spoil it by watching it through a view finder.” And that was that, everyone seemed to put away their phones and enjoyed watching Whoopi in real time. After the stand up routine Whoopi took questions from the audience for about 35 minutes. It was great. She advised people on life, love and even adoption. Stressing to one gay couple that it would be great if they adopted an older child around 5 – 7, those kids are the ones that need the most love.

She was propositioned over and over for appearances on the View but stressed she had no pull in getting people scheduled. She spoke of her co-workers and said there is no stress with them. “We all have co-workers, and it’s a normal workplace. Sometimes you get along, sometimes you’re at each other, but for the most part it’s a normal day.” She loves her job and says she’s not going anywhere, anytime soon. She wakes up every morning, looks around at her digs and says, wow I live like a queen. To maintain that lifestyle, she has to have a job that can afford that.

During the show I heard  Raven-Symone was in the audience. I immediately scoured the crowd, when I didn’t see her I positioned myself near the stage door to catch her going in. Turns out she watched from backstage, and was nice when she let me go backstage and meet her when asked. She was super nice and told me it was her first time seeing Whoopi on stage. She loved it. You can tell that  Raven-Symone really respects Whoopi, when they duo spotted each other,  Raven-Symone ran towards Whoopi into a long, loving hug. i didn’t get that shot, I really felt it was too personal. It would have been the money shot, but sometimes those moments just have to be memories.
Check out Philly Mag for more pixs and gossip.
