JOAN SHEPP LANDS AT THE SHOPS AT LIBERTY PLACE, but that is not the end of the story.

Last week I tweeted about waiting to break some news, but it involved an advertiser/client of mine.

Finally I can state what Elizabeth Wellington tweeted earlier today, and that is Joan Shepp, who was sadly forced out of her home at 1616 Walnut Street because of higher rent, has found a landing place, temporarily, Ellen Shepp tells me.

The Shops at Liberty Place was so not on my radar for Joan Shepp as I set out a year ago to help find a home for Shepp when she first asked me to get the word out that she was looking for a place. I wrote it in my Philly Mag column, but it got little traction, I guess everyone was looking at the photos. Last winter I ran into Shepp and she asked me again to help her get the story out as they had to be out by the end of September 2013.  I gave it to Philly Mag’s Victor Fiorillo to write, and then it got everyone’s attention.

Joan Shepp Closing Walnut Street Boutique

“We’re definitely not wanted here.”

The 71-year-old Shepp explains that the building recently sold and
that the new landlord wants her out. “They’re making apartments
upstairs, and they want a chain store downstairs,” she says. “They’re
not really concerned about who it is. They just want to get the highest
rent, and they’ll give the space to whoever is going to pay them the
most.” Shepp’s lease is up in September [2013], and she has started looking for a
new location, although comparable real estate options in Rittenhouse are
slim.

Last week at least three people tipped me off to her new location. I asked my peeps at Shops of Liberty Place and received a no comment. Last night when I saw Elizabeth at the Nicole Miller XIX Most Fashionable Women (which I will be writing about in Philly Mag today) she told me about the temp move, I was like oh bummer, it got out before I got the Shepp go ahead, oh well.

The “pop up place” is the old Cameo Swimsuit space (near Westin hotel entrance, it’s right in the Rotunda), This space used to house Philly Sports Cave store (BTW I named that store, it used to be called Philly Man Cave and I successfully convinced them to change it.), which can be found on the 2nd level now. Shepp tells me that the store on Walnut Street will close today through Thursday. Then open with a splash on Friday or Saturday.

You’ll recall when Philly Sports Cave first moved into the shops it was in the place where
Kiehl’s is now located. Remember when Kiehl’s was pushed off Walnut Street and moved to the Shops at Liberty Place temporarily, guess what it’s no longer a temp space as they’ve extended their contract.
Dear Joan Shepp
There’s a lovely space on the 2nd floor
Which used to house a clothing store. It has a long hallway with large windows for your magnificent displays.

An entrance to the upscale mall, and parking garage.
The other entrance leads to 17th and Chestnut Street, with it’s large windows. It’s right there at the beginning of what I’ve dubbed Philly’s New Fashion Row – Chestnut Street from 17th to 19th Streets. Plus the door is only steps away from Rittenhouse Square and around the corner from 1616 Walnut Street.

Let’s not forget that in August I heard & blogged that Joan Shepp was going to the Witherspoon Building at Juniper and Walnut. I tweeted hints for weeks as I waited for a go ahead, but then blogger Laura Goldman tweeted it, after hearing about it from someone at the store.
So just like this entry, I had already shot the place and hit published as soon as I read that tidbit. But something fell through, I heard, or did it? Cause the other day I went by and they started to to demo on the building that has been dormant for years.
 So we shall see
Where Joan Shepp lands.

By the way Phasion Phest is on Wednesday. You can still get tickets. Can you imagine the awesome fashion shows Joan Shepp could have in the Rotunda. Plus there is great catering on the premise? I think it’s a no brainer where she should go.
Phashion Phest celebrates 20 years! Join us in celebrating our 20th Anniversary Wed 9/25/13

Where Celebrities Eat in Philadelphia Segment on CBS3 I Participated In.

Here’s the link to the CBS Philly entertainment piece that I participated in, as well as full clips of my interview, and the restaurants I recommended they interview about which stars went where. So fun to watch

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/09/23/philadelphia-is-no-stranger-to-the-stars/

(ok I really didn’t watch me, it’s weird. I’m sure I’ll watch me at some point. Wish I wore a black shirt.)

Watch me on CBS3 Sunday Night after the Emmy’s

as reporter Nicole Brewer reports on where celebrities eat when they come to Philly. Here’s Barry Manilow and his back up dancers on their way out of Ralph’s Italian Restaurant in South Philly, a few years back. I think it was my first celebrity shot, and appeared in Michael Klein’s Inqlings column in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Yesterday: Kathleen D. Wilkinson, Chancellor, Philadelphia Bar Association and Award-Winning Actress, Producer welcomed Cancer Survivor Jill Eikenberry. Jill Eikenberry is perhaps best known for her portrayal of lawyer Ann Kelsey on NBC’s long-running hit series “L.A. Law,” She talked about playing a woman lawyer on
network television in a groundbreaking role, and life as a breast cancer survivor as well as an
activist for breast cancer research and early detection.
While in town yesterday she had lunch at Hip City Veg. She had the tofu salad, and also bought a wrap to eat on the train back to NYC. Jack Canfora’s new play Jericho will receive its New York premiere at 59E59 Theatres this fall, starring Jill Eikenberry. Performances begin Oct. 4 and continue through Nov. 3. The only cast member she sees or hears about on a regular basis is Susan Dey. Dey’s daughter, Sarah Dey-Hirshan, is her Pilates teacher in NYC.

Vanessa Williams Forgives the Miss America Pageant, 30 years to the day since she was Selected as Miss America

On September 17th 1983, Vanessa Williams broke color barriers and made history becoming the first black Miss America.

Less than a year later, on July 23, 1984, Williams gave up her crown
after nude photos of her surfaced. Despite the scandal, Williams later launched a successful singing and acting career, including featured
roles  on the hit television sitcoms Ugly Betty, and dramas like Desperate Housewives, 666 Park Avenue, many TV movies like my fav “Bye Bye Birdie”; no doubt becoming the most successful Miss America to date.

The 2nd most famous Miss America is 1955 winner Lee Meriwether who went on to play Catwomen, and appeared on one of my fav soaps, All My Children. She tweeted a photo of her, Vanessa Williams, and her daughter.

Fast forward 30 years, and another Miss America first.
Newly crowned Miss America Nina Davuluri, the first Indian-American winner

During yesterday’s press conference Davuluri talked about Vanessa Williams, and how they were both from New York, and ground breaking choices:  “Vanessa Williams was former Miss Syracuse and went on to win Miss New
York and Miss America” and that was the same exact path thirty years apart, she said. “Really the stars aligned for both
of us.”

Chairman and CEO, Sam Haskell, III  (above with the New Miss America right after she was crowned, and after the TV cameras stopped filming) said at the press conference Monday morning, that he had just gotten off the phone with actress Vanessa Williams, and the following night, Tuesday, they would be attending the Broadway Play, “The Trip to Bountiful” play starring
Vanessa Williams. Vanessa was excited to meet Nina, and would give the new Miss America advice on what to expect in the upcoming year.

Updated: Vanessa Williams reached out to the organization after the backlash on Twitter over the choice of Nina not looking American enough.
She knew the selection of Nina Davuluri,
the first winner of Indian heritage, would face some of the hostility
that she, [Williams] faced after she was won; there was hate mail and racist comments

This will be the first time in my memory, and I’m a big Miss America fan, as well as a Vanessa Williams fan, that Vanessa has welcomed Miss America back into her life. I’ve met Vanessa Williams a few times, and she is just one of the nicest celebrities. But you knew just to never bring up the mention of the Miss America pageant to her.

I hope there’s a lot of press, welcome back home Miss America.
As the world’s largest provider of
scholarship assistance for young women and one of the nation’s leading
achievement programs, the Miss America Organization made available last
year more than $45 million in scholarship assistance.
Thanks to #DoAC, the Atlantic City Alliance, Cashman & Assocs, and the Miss America Pageant for hosting me this past weekend. I’ll have a more insiders write up coming soon.
