Keith Leaphart was raised in West Oak Lane. His mom stressed to her kids to get an education, and he didn’t disappoint excelling in all the classes he took. After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia, he enrolled in medical school and simultaneously obtained a master’s in business administration from St. Joseph’s University. On Wednesday, February 1, 8:00am-10:00am, in light of the City of Philadelphia’s introduction of ‘Ban the Box’, Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy, P.C. will host an informational networking breakfast with Mayor Michael A. Nutter and a panel of city leaders to discuss what employers need to know about Philadelphia’s new law and the benefits provided by the city to employers who help ex-offenders. The event will take place at the offices of Zarwin Baum, 1818 Market Street, 13th floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103. There is no cost to attend.
In April 2011, Mayor Nutter signed legislation prohibiting City agencies and private employers from knowingly inquiring about criminal background and arrests on the application for a position. Following an initial interview with the prospective employee, the employer may perform a background check. The law, titled ‘Ban the Box’, went into effect in Philadelphia on January 13, 2012. As Mayor Nutter stated upon signing the legislation, “Everyone deserves an opportunity to work to provide for their families and should not be discriminated against before they even have a first interview. Offering jobs to ex-offenders improves the quality of life for all Philadelphians, and this Ordinance is an important aspect of our overall job and public safety strategy.”
On February 1, guests to Zarwin Baum’s informational breakfast will hear more about Mayor Nutter’s Office of Reintegration Services for Ex-Offenders (RISE) and the City’s tax incentive for employers who hire formerly incarcerated individuals. Attendees will learn the key provisions of ‘Ban the Box’ and discover how the law is being enforced by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, while also learning about the City’s commitment to providing employers with trained and qualified workers, and why the formerly incarcerated may become their best employees.

Last week in my Philly Mag column I touched on the fashion at the Hair O Dog, but today we’re going to take a closer look. Many regard the Hair O Dog as the first big event of the 2012 social season. For some people this is the only event they will attend all year long as it has all the aspects of a great event. For the price of a ticket from $95 to $165+ guests were transformed into a fantasy night that only Cinderella could imagine. Philadelphia Restaurant Week Restaurant in the Spotlight:
Christina Wilson joined the Mercato team as the Chef de Cuisine in the fall of 2011. Christina joined the kitchen from Mercato’s neighbor, Lolita, where she served as the Chef de Cuisine for over two years.
Evan Turney is now serving as Executive Chef in both Mercato and Varga Bar, where he is partial owner. Evan served as Exec. Chef when the restaurant opened in 2005, and now he is back again. Some of the dishes are still on the menu due to their popularity, like the lobster and shrimp pyramid pasta. Christina and Evan are tweaking a couple dishes, including adding a little bit of spice as you will see.
The restaurant’s space, formerly a dilapidated local market, where I bought my newspaper ever day when I lived at 13th & Spruce, was transformed in the early 2000s when owner George Anni had a vision for a fresh market Italian BYOB. It became Mercato in 2005.
Mercato doesn’t take reservations, so get there early and expect lines on the weekend. My friends usually put their names in then head over to Valanni for a cocktail. Mercato is a BYOB & takes cash only, but that’s not a deterrent as the food is well worth it.
This week, Mercato will debut its new Winter menu as well as participate in Restaurant Week —grab a bottle of wine and come in to try the items yourself! Look I found Ryan from 10 Arts there too. Lot’s of fun stuff going on in the kitchen at Mercato.
On 2/5/11 watch Super Bowl XLVI at Varga Bar (941 Spruce St.), which will again host a chicken wing competition lovingly dubbed Super Fowl Sunday II.
The Rest of the Story: The Flyers Wives Fashion Show not only benefited the Comcast Spectacor Charities, but was also to debut the Nicole Miller’s new clothing line, Artelier, from her Spring 2012 collection. The event was held at the Hyatt at the Bellevue, where a Nicole Miller store is located, owned by Mary Dougherty. Which no doubt made it convenient to get the clothes transported easily, and to clad the “models” and VIP guests in Nicole Miller clothing. It’s a great marketing tool, and one that is used during the fashion shows in NYC.

It’s sock season and Max Talbot goes all out with his Flyers orange socks, velvet sports coat and bow tie (which you can see here over at the 700 Level) This was one party that was hard to crash if you weren’t on the list. There were checkers all over the place, and if you were wandering around without your visible wrist band you were stopped and escorted out. There was a 5PM VIP VIP party (Flyers, sponsors etc) (It was a fashion show, I’m so much more interested in who is sitting in the front row then getting posed photos.) 6PM brought in the VIP tickets $300 My Nicole Miller Contest Winners: Dr. Diane O’Mara and Ms Suzanne Glass “Suzanne and I had a fabulous time. The Palm Restaurant donated a face on the wall of the restaurant. It went for $2500.

So before they were filled I scanned them all to see who I wanted to shoot before the event began. It was fairly easy since the Flyers were sitting in the front row. But then it turned out I had didn’t have enough time to really name them all before my media outlets published 7 hrs after I got home. Flyers WivesTina and Caroline Bolletino hang out with Ilya Bryzgalov. Having shot Ilya last year at the Betsy Ross House when he toured it with his wife, I knew that he was a huge twitterer and would be chronicling his wife of the catwalk. I decided to position myself across from him to catch him in action. and got one of the most talked about pictures of the night. You can just see how proud he is of his wife. I don’t mind being called a paparazzo or the misused term paparazzi (which I embrace, paparazzo is so boring and singular. Just don’t call me a journalist, I’m a social diarist, or a event chronicler.) cause it defines the kind of shots I’m looking for, quick, exciting, and one that says a thousand words.

Last week was the re-launch of Theatre Confetti (formerlyNice People Theatre) Sponsored by the Wyncote Foundation, and held at the Underground Arts at the Wolf Building in the Loft District. The brainchild of Nicole Paloux of Red Balloon PR and Bi Jean Ngo, Theatre Confetti is a pop-up theatre and will put on shows and art performances all over the City. After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia, he enrolled in medical school and simultaneously obtained a master’s in business administration from St. Joseph’s University.
