REPLICA Celebrates Grand Opening in Center City

Keith Leaphart was raised in West Oak Lane. His mom stressed to her kids to get an education, and he didn’t disappoint excelling in all the classes he took. After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia, he enrolled in medical school and simultaneously obtained a master’s in business administration from St. Joseph’s University. He’s taken all this education and life experiences and applied them to many aspects of business as well as the many boards he’s served on and the two organizations he’s started, the “Man Up” initiative, which hopes to provide young men with the vision and skills necessary to become responsible fathers and role models for Philadelphia’s youth; and Rainmakers Inc., a nonprofit committed to enhancing alliances among African-American professionals. Still a practicing physician, he’s also gone into business, but don’t call it just a copy shop, it’s much more than that at Replica 33 South 18th Street – Philadelphia PA 19103 Phone: 215 567 7107:

Larry Giuffra, Jamie Hoffman, Stephen Rennekamp and Kristyn Aldrich. Larry gave me a tour of some of the machines they recently got. He tells me that no job is too big or too small to copy, they’re able to create posters, exhibit boards for trial (I don’t miss those days), and they can do tasks as simple as b&w or color copies. He did mention something about wrapping a car in an advertisement, so in case you want to do that give him a call.

ZARWIN BAUM, MAYOR NUTTER & “BAN THE BOX” SPEAKER SERIES

On Wednesday, February 1, 8:00am-10:00am, in light of the City of Philadelphia’s introduction of ‘Ban the Box’, Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy, P.C. will host an informational networking breakfast with Mayor Michael A. Nutter and a panel of city leaders to discuss what employers need to know about Philadelphia’s new law and the benefits provided by the city to employers who help ex-offenders. The event will take place at the offices of Zarwin Baum, 1818 Market Street, 13th floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103. There is no cost to attend.

In April 2011, Mayor Nutter signed legislation prohibiting City agencies and private employers from knowingly inquiring about criminal background and arrests on the application for a position. Following an initial interview with the prospective employee, the employer may perform a background check. The law, titled ‘Ban the Box’, went into effect in Philadelphia on January 13, 2012. As Mayor Nutter stated upon signing the legislation, “Everyone deserves an opportunity to work to provide for their families and should not be discriminated against before they even have a first interview. Offering jobs to ex-offenders improves the quality of life for all Philadelphians, and this Ordinance is an important aspect of our overall job and public safety strategy.”

On February 1, guests to Zarwin Baum’s informational breakfast will hear more about Mayor Nutter’s Office of Reintegration Services for Ex-Offenders (RISE) and the City’s tax incentive for employers who hire formerly incarcerated individuals. Attendees will learn the key provisions of ‘Ban the Box’ and discover how the law is being enforced by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, while also learning about the City’s commitment to providing employers with trained and qualified workers, and why the formerly incarcerated may become their best employees.

Moderated by Keri Salerno, Public Safety Office, City of Philadelphia, the panel will include Sharif Street and Jill Fisher of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy, P.C.; Bill Hart, Executive Director, Mayor’s Office of Reintegration Services for Ex-offenders, City of Philadelphia; and Rue Landau, Executive Director, Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations,
City of Philadelphia.

Says Zarwin Baum managing shareholder Mitchell S. Kaplan, “We feel that the City’s initiative to encourage businesses to employ ex-offenders is in the best long-range interests of our community; therefore, we are pleased to assist in getting out the message.”

Space for the breakfast is limited. To RSVP, contact Monique Andes at 215.569.2800 or by Friday, January 27.

How do you get PhillyChitChat to cover your event?

All you have to do is invite me. Whether it’s a girls night out, birthday party at a restaurant, charity event, etc just send me the date (at least 2 weeks in advance – email me Buzz @PhillyChitChat.com, I don’t always see the FB invites) and I will try and stop by. If you want a guarantee that I will stop by you can hire me. When you hire me not only do I stop by and write your event up on PhillyChitChat, but you get to keep all the photos I take to use as you please. (Alexander Hankins and Ilana Waber celebrate her birthday at Whisper)You don’t have to be a celebrity, I do like photographing celebrities, but my mainstay is regular peeps like you and me. Even if your having a party at a business, I will come by and photograph it.
If you’re my advertiser you get a live link, like Recess, but not like Whisper above. I think I do a fair job at covering all businesses, whether they advertise with me or not. If someone hires me for an event, they also get live links. The only thing I am partial too is covering stories in Center City preferably restaurants, event space or clubs.I will go out to Jersey or the Main Line, but it has to be pretty exciting like The Radnor Hunt, the Food and Wine event in Atlantic City an envelope stuffing event for charity or if you have someone named Hamilton on your guest list.
I love covering news events, press conferences of interest. promotions, debuts, opening nights. It was a huge honor to meet Martin Luther King III as he promoted his new network Bounce here in Philly last month. Melanie Johnson is giving MLK III a citation from the City, as Chase Lenfest looks on. Lenfest Media is broadcasting Bounce TV (http://www.bouncetv.com), the country’s first and fast-growing over-the-air broadcast television network for African-Americans. I try and give live links to charities and random things. I guess you could say I am creating the rules as I go, but it is a business, as well as a community service so I try and stay true to my mission. So drop me a line, write me for my photography rates and/or advertise with me. I get over 120,000 readers a month, see my stats here >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Hair O Dog: Fashion Do’s, Don’t & Favorite Pictures

Last week in my Philly Mag column I touched on the fashion at the Hair O Dog, but today we’re going to take a closer look.
Many regard the Hair O Dog as the first big event of the 2012 social season. For some people this is the only event they will attend all year long as it has all the aspects of a great event. For the price of a ticket from $95 to $165+ guests were transformed into a fantasy night that only Cinderella could imagine. The dress was on a higher scale than most other public gala’s except perhaps the Academy Ball, which is this Saturday so look for those shots in Philly Mag next Monday.Lauren Pipari, Erica Soltoff and Jennifer Sherlock, Jenna Communications, Hair O Dog, created by Rob Molinaro (left) and Dan Cronin of Chorus Communications,
This year there are two charities that will benefit from the nights gala; THE GARDEN OF REFLECTION; Pennsylvania’s Official 9-11 Memorial, and FRIENDS ARE BY YOUR SIDE. Founded by celebrity stylist Martino Cartier, owner of Martino Cartier Salons, FRIENDS ARE BY YOUR SIDE is a network of salon owners and beauty industry experts united in a mission to ease the stress and pain felt by women battling cancer. With Rob – Carmen Tomassetti, CTO Entertainment and Dr. Erin Pusz.
Founded by celebrity stylist Martino Cartier, owner of Martino Cartier Salons, FRIENDS ARE BY YOUR SIDE is a network of salon owners and beauty industry experts united in a mission to ease the stress and pain felt by women battling cancer. Christine Jock was named “Queen O’ the Dog,” due to her battle against an aggressive form of Breast Cancer, causing her to undergo a double Mastectomy during her thirties as a single parent. Friends who nominated her after watching a local news broadcast said Christine did not allow her ongoing complications after the surgery deflate her self-esteem. Looking great with her lavish custom-made gown designed for her from the Aci Nae Boutique and a Skin Palette spray tan, Christine was escorted to the gala by Michael Camacho.

Vroommmm Jewelz Entertainment entices the nightlife industry with astonishing performances and displays.

Chef Christina Wilson joins the Mercato team now headed up by Varga Bar’s Chef Evan Turney

Philadelphia Restaurant Week Restaurant in the Spotlight:

Christina Wilson joined the Mercato team as the Chef de Cuisine in the fall of 2011. Christina joined the kitchen from Mercato’s neighbor, Lolita, where she served as the Chef de Cuisine for over two years.

Evan Turney is now serving as Executive Chef in both Mercato and Varga Bar, where he is partial owner. Evan served as Exec. Chef when the restaurant opened in 2005, and now he is back again. Some of the dishes are still on the menu due to their popularity, like the lobster and shrimp pyramid pasta. Christina and Evan are tweaking a couple dishes, including adding a little bit of spice as you will see.
The restaurant’s space, formerly a dilapidated local market, where I bought my newspaper ever day when I lived at 13th & Spruce, was transformed in the early 2000s when owner George Anni had a vision for a fresh market Italian BYOB. It became Mercato in 2005.

Mercato doesn’t take reservations, so get there early and expect lines on the weekend. My friends usually put their names in then head over to Valanni for a cocktail. Mercato is a BYOB & takes cash only, but that’s not a deterrent as the food is well worth it.

This week, Mercato will debut its new Winter menu as well as participate in Restaurant Week —grab a bottle of wine and come in to try the items yourself! Look I found Ryan from 10 Arts there too. Lot’s of fun stuff going on in the kitchen at Mercato.

On 2/5/11 watch Super Bowl XLVI at Varga Bar (941 Spruce St.), which will again host a chicken wing competition lovingly dubbed Super Fowl Sunday II.

Breaking It Down: The Flyers Wives Fashion Show & Salty Balls

The Rest of the Story: The Flyers Wives Fashion Show not only benefited the Comcast Spectacor Charities, but was also to debut the Nicole Miller’s new clothing line, Artelier, from her Spring 2012 collection. The event was held at the Hyatt at the Bellevue, where a Nicole Miller store is located, owned by Mary Dougherty. Which no doubt made it convenient to get the clothes transported easily, and to clad the “models” and VIP guests in Nicole Miller clothing. It’s a great marketing tool, and one that is used during the fashion shows in NYC.

Alla Pasternack wearing Stella McCartney, Meredith Hoffman, Stephanie Bachmen, and Michele Seidman.
Lianda Swain, Reiki Practitioner & Life Coach at Lianda’s Natural Sense with dad Ian Swain. Those Swain’s are entrepreneurs go getters.and easy on the eyes. Here’s Lianda and her look a like mom Linda Swain, with Fox 29’s Good Day anchor Mike Jerrick. (No only is Mike Jerrick a fun guy, great ad-libber, but he’s got his finger on the pulse of the pop culture nations. When he did that mocking of the Kardashians back in the summer, he realized that their 15 minutes was up, as it was only a short time after that when the rest of the country got a clue.)
Jim Werner, Angela Val, Tina Wells and Rich Castor and Mary Perenti. Committee member for the nights event

Aisling Hall breaks away from Skyrim to enjoy a night out. It’s nice to see the Flyers Wives out. It doesn’t happen much because most of them are home raising kids, unlike the youngish Phillies players, the hockey players tend to be in their late 20s or early 30s. They are settled.Colette Gabriel, Stephanie Palladino, Juliette Gabriel, Crazy Susan’s Cookie’s – Susan Adair, and Linda Brand.Steven Lagos and Rakia Reynolds – co chair of the Young Friends Event. Honestly I love photographing her as she always brings the style.
A stylish duo: Nicole Rossi, uwishunu writer and Adam Hymans, Donor Engagement Officer at The Philadelphia Foundation, and celebrating a year of bliss with the adorable Kilian Kröll.
The Palm Restaurant: Danielle Grimm and Jim Haney. The Palm was always a place I went to on a special occasion, but in the past few years I find it to be more of a place I enjoy going for the food, as well as to enjoy impeccable service, a delicious meal and of course I want to see who’s there in person and on The Wall. I don’t always have to hit the dining room for a delicious meal, they have a very affordable Happy Hour, I like the late night HH and go to enjoy bites, spirits and again to see who’s there. Times: Philadelphia – 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM – Close Henry A. Davidsen founder and President Brian Lipstein (I’m always confused when I see him, thinking his name should be Henry cause that’s the name of his company.)
Barbs HD Motorcycle was up for a raffle. The ultimate fan swag as it is signed by all the Philadelphia Flyers.
Or you could bid on silent auction swag. Which for me that night was out of my league cause the bids were upwards of $500 for most signed Flyers souvenirs
Amy Stratton, GM of The Sporting Club, WANTS YOUR BODY FOR Fight Night at the Sporting Club march 24, 2012 for charity. We especially need a VIP person for the #1 Card. Are you a former Bachelor? Do you want to kick the ass of a former Survivor, or vice versa? Give her a ring. Free membership and training for 2 months.Shallyn Hatcher, Heather Hatcher, and Taylor Jacobs
LAGOS has a Flyers pendant.
The Flyers Wives event was a huge success. Very laid back, not pretentious, and the players mingled with the guests, posed for pictures and for the most part they were left alone. Sorry I didn’t know this was from Barb’s Harley -Davidson when I wrote about this on Philly Mag or mentioned it on Fox 29. – Barb’s Harley autographed beach cruiser just went for $5000! It’s sock season and Max Talbot goes all out with his Flyers orange socks, velvet sports coat and bow tie (which you can see here over at the 700 Level) This was one party that was hard to crash if you weren’t on the list. There were checkers all over the place, and if you were wandering around without your visible wrist band you were stopped and escorted out. There was a 5PM VIP VIP party (Flyers, sponsors etc) (It was a fashion show, I’m so much more interested in who is sitting in the front row then getting posed photos.) 6PM brought in the VIP tickets $300
My Nicole Miller Contest Winners: Dr. Diane O’Mara and Ms Suzanne Glass
“Suzanne and I had a fabulous time. We saw so many people we knew as well!!! Can’t wait to go next year. Thanks for the opportunity to attend this year. You looked great on [Fox29’s Good Day] morning on the news… nice job!”
Dana Spain and Carol Drumstas, Brown & Forman, who also supplied “The Little Black Dress” wine
The Young Friends Ticket was $100. The doors opened for them at 7:15PM and allowed them to mingle at the VIP party downstairs. When the fashion show started their seats were upstairs. After the show, it was back downstairs to mingle. That was a great deal.
Auctioning a $10,000 bracelet from Lagos. Amazing!!! Mike Jerrick, Mary Dougherty, Steven Lagos, Sheinelle Jones is co-host of “Good Day”, and model with the bracelet.
The Palm Restaurant donated a face on the wall of the restaurant. It went for $2500.

Front row and center Fred and Irene Schabel. Irene won the beach bike.
Thankfully the names of the peeps were on the seats. So before they were filled I scanned them all to see who I wanted to shoot before the event began. It was fairly easy since the Flyers were sitting in the front row. But then it turned out I had didn’t have enough time to really name them all before my media outlets published 7 hrs after I got home.

Flyers WivesTina and Caroline Bolletino hang out with Ilya Bryzgalov. Having shot Ilya last year at the Betsy Ross House when he toured it with his wife, I knew that he was a huge twitterer and would be chronicling his wife of the catwalk. I decided to position myself across from him to catch him in action.
and got one of the most talked about pictures of the night. You can just see how proud he is of his wife. Zyjenia Bryzgalov
Who’d I spot at the event: Front Row: Carl and Karen Buchholz, Ian Swain, Lisa Nutter, else where Mariska Bogle, Lynsie Solomon, Michelle and Bruce Shannon, Carol Tamburino, Sabrina Tamburino Thorne, Lauren O’Dorisio (Happy Birthday today), Jon Christopher, Caitlyn Joyce (sorry I didn’t have a minute to chat.) and one of the producers of the event Mia Christine Colona. great job.
HOT LEGS Lauren Pronger. Scott Hartnell has to cool himself down with a cold one
Mike Jerrick and his biggest fan, Rosalie! The paparazzi train their camera’s on a model. In actuality these peeps really are considered fashion photographers, or event photographers. They look down on that word paparazzi as it has such a negative connotation, although just like any word or title there are extremes. I don’t mind being called a paparazzo or the misused term paparazzi (which I embrace, paparazzo is so boring and singular. Just don’t call me a journalist, I’m a social diarist, or a event chronicler.) cause it defines the kind of shots I’m looking for, quick, exciting, and one that says a thousand words.

Pamcakes. I didn’t have any, they look delicious though. Til next year. So excited. This was an awesome event. MKDA did a great job on the execution and the guest list, plus selling the tickets, The Hyatt, and CTO Entertainment did an excellent job with the music and the lights. Everyone loved DJ Bizz (CTO Entertainment) so much so that I got requests for his song list, and am waiting for it. Check out some great videos of the event over on Crossing Broad. Bromance in the making?
Scott Hartnell and Claude Giroux. Salty Balls!!Michael D’Antuono Maui’s Doghouse in Wildwood specializes in Salty Balls, according to the NY Times. with Jim Werner, Angela Val and Tina Wells. Maui’s Doghouse is opening in the Bellevue Food Court today.

Have an awesome weekend. See you next week for 5 more days of fun events.

THE FLYERS WIVES FASHION SHOW – PHILLY MAG COLUMN & WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE

Catch Me on Fox 29 Good Day Philly this morning at 9:30AM to see who else rode this bike on stage last night. Front row right: Carl Buchholz, Karen Dougherty Buchholz, Linda and Ian Swain, First Lady Lisa Nutter check out Fox 29’s morning co-hosts Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones MC the event at the Bellevue last night.
Fox 29’s morning co-hosts Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones get sandwiched by, who the heck are these Flyers. I really have to watch me some sports. Tomorrow or Monday I will put up a few of the non-Flyer folks and chat a little about them. But for now check out my column at Philly Mag’s Philly Post HERE. (again it should be live about 1030AM)I spotted some of my advertisers at the event: Little Black Dress Wine’s was served, and CTO provided the music and Teuscher’s Chocolate was in the house.
