Around Town

HughE Around Town & That Halloween Video

Today I woke up, sometimes I forget what a blessing, a privilege it is. Why am I here, sometimes I think. I’m not sure but as my mother in law Eleanor Tobe always quoted:

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Fox 29 Announces The Nice Guy Reporter, gets a nice promotion!! Congrats Bill !!

I’ve been neglectful doing this specific post, which I love so much, which I did much more before I got into Social Media and just shared immediately there. But here goes today’s column and I shall return once a week to doing this. It’s odd I have definitely become more lazy post pandemic, or shall I say I cherish my personal time and I get behind. That personal time might be bird watching, watching TV, specifically The Voice, and stalking movie sets. Thankfully Nick Nolte has left the City and I won’t be curious anymore about what he is doing in Rittenhouse Square. Hope you guys have a delicious weekend, and enjoy the Halloween sights, if it’s your thing. I hope to hit up a few parties on Saturday, and neighborhoods on Sunday, including Northern Liberties Hound O Ween Dog Contest. Seriously, I can’t wait to go.

Style Scene Stealer: I photographed this women walking her dog near the Adam Sandler film set a few weeks ago at 15th and Walnut Streets. I LOVE her fashion sense. Those are serious boots with probably the best stories. I wish when I took these candid shots I’d ask people more about their style. Maybe when this Covid thing is finally over, I’ll do my fashion on the street again with Q&A. I do miss Big Rube’s Daily News column. That was fun.

Speaking of style, last night Moore College hosted their 2021 Visionary Women Award evening. (more on that next week). I was chitchatting with Ellen Shepp, who I just say at Shyamaween on Saturday night. She was a judge for best costume. I wasn’t there at that time so let me share with you the winners.

Dave Williams here with his wife Mia Tinari and SIL Nina Tinari and these folks on the right. So good everyone!!

Congratulations to Ilana Waber on her engagement after Nick Gianos popped the question 4 days after her birthday, in beautiful Rittenhouse Square where they met when she asked to pet his dog.

A fundraiser for Judge Lori A. Dumas who is running for Commonwealth Court of PA, was held last night at the Union League. About 100 people came out to support Lori just a few days before the election on November 2 including Nathanial Wallace, Patrick Mahanger, Judge Lori Dumas, Dr. Kevin Baumlin, Mona Terrell Wallace. Spotted were Roslyn Gilbert, John Scott, the Carpenter’s Union, Morgan Wilson, Thanuja Hamilton, Matt Cooke, Brenda Goldsmith, and Dr. Argie Allen-Wilson. Senator Casey appeared via video throwing his support behind Judge Dumas and thanking the guests for their support.

Really proud of this work. I know I was on TV for years, but somewhere along the way I got stage fright and stopped. I worked on somethings over the years, especially doing my elevator chats on InstaStories. I got out of my head, and worked on my self confidence and this beautifully produced promo by Chatterblast is the best of my work in front of the camera in years. Although some of my Sandler interviews were good as well. I feel good now, back in front of the camera. Anywho thanks to Matthew Ray and the Chatterblast team, especially editing, sound, and MAKE UP this was a blast. My mom gives it her stamp of approval. What’s so good is Sheila. It took a lot of control to tone down her always cheerleader enthusiasm, to play Morticia, a self assured vixen!!

Amen!! Thanks Lane Johnson for keeping it real, and helping to remove the stigma of mental health as something to be embarrassed about. We are all going through sometime. Thanks so much for subscribing and reading PhillyChitChat.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Happy New Year : ChitChat -Lots of Engagements & No Surrender

Happy New Year. I usually do my best of the year entries this week, but as I am going away to Disney World in 2 weeks I’m going to save those entries for that week. It’s Friday so I’m going with my regular around town column ie gossip column where I share with you news of engagements, weddings, new business, celebrity sightings, cute pets, original content, tips from readers, info from PR peeps and of course news curated from Social Media.

Recently Billy Penn asked me where couples should get engaged in Philly. I picked the Waterworks as my favorite spot to get engaged because of the spectacular views of the City skyline and Boathouse Row. HappyAnd mentioned too cliche would be Rittenhouse Square, but why not anyway – it’s beautiful!!

As I expected many couples got engaged over the holiday, let’s see who’s going to the chapel….

Philly Mag featured a cute engagement of a couple on Philly’s other miracle street- Addison. I love that these days future grooms capture the moment either by hiring a photographer,

or taking selfies.
Oh it looks like someone read the Billy Penn article as Matt Malinowski popped the question to Charles Lentz at
the Waterworks, and then continued the celebration at Rittenhouse Square, which was the cliche place I mentioned to pop the question, especially during the holidays. What do guys give when they get engaged, sometimes a wedding band, cuff links, or in this case a watch as Matt gave to Chuck. Congrats guys.

Another friend of mine popped the question this weekend – Paul Smith. Paul and I both worked at Kohn Swift in our early careers. Paul and I went on to start our own successful business. Congrats to Paul and Sarah Ann!

Loren Robinson, MD, MSHP said YES to her fellow doctor. Earlier this month Loren was noted as 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Awards Winners for 2017 Congrats on both accounts!

Tattoos for Heroes

My friend Eddie Alderson, 23 and my niece Nicole Rae, 21 are in the battles for their lives, literally and they chose to commemorate the battle with their own “scar”. Both have been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Nicole was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago, and is done treatment and has returned to school, Eddie is still undergoing treatment. They both have been public with their battle, and are winning. They don’t know each other, but they both traveled to NYC this past week to get tattoo’s to represent the battle.

Eddie Alderson (ex-Matthew, ONE LIFE TO LIVE), who now lives in the suburbs of Philly, tweeted earlier this month to Bruce Springsteen that he’d be seeing his Springsteen On Broadway – “Hey @springsteen ! “No Surrender” has been my motto and go-to song throughout my current fight against Cancer. I’m seeing your #BruceOnBroadway show Dec. 27, and would LOVE to get you to write No Surrender on my arm, for my first tattoo! Thank you for being my inspiration!” His former co-stars added their support and pleas to the singer on Twitter. Renée Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline) posted, “Thank you @Eddie_Alderson for inspiring me since our days on #OLTL! I stand with u! #NoSurrender @springsteen!” Melissa Fumero (ex-Adriana), wrote, “Eddie, you’re the best and you inspire me with your strength and bravery! Please, @springsteen give my friend the Xmas present he deserves. Sign his arm!! #nosurrender.” Josh Kelly (ex-Cutter), added, “When I grow up I wanna be @Eddie_Alderson … just my thoughts for the day. #NoSurrender … oh and @springsteen … please sign his arm.” Terri Conn (ex-Aubrey; ex-Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS), posted, “@springsteen, you will find no more an inspiration, a talent, or a kind and pure heart, than in @Eddie_Alderson! #makeadreamcometrue #BruceonBroadway #NoSurrender.”

See the video of Bruce signing Eddie’s arm at Soap Opera Digest
Then Eddie headed to Fun City Tattoo today to get the tattoo done.

Nicole who finished her treatment a year ago, and is well enough to return to school wanted to mark this time in her own way, with 13 bats for reasons she is keeping to herself. What we do know is she’s been a fan of Megan Massacre: tattoo artist, model, fashion contributor, and TV personality for sometime and made an appointment a few months back, as Megan books out months in advance.

I asked Nicole if it was painful, and she told me it was less painful than the constant needles she had to endure during her cancer treatment.

Nicole’s dad Tom also got a tattoo of a bat with Nicole’s initials to honor his daughter (his first tat is a circle stamp honoring his dad who passed away several years ago).

Eddie & Nicole congrats on your tats, and for being an inspiration to us all.
God bless you, and Happy New Year!!

Where did the Trees Go at 17th and JFK, Happy Birthday Mimi, Ben Simmons,

Hello Thursday, August 3. Summer is slipping by, but we’ve had a lot of fun this year haven’t we?

Let’s see what’s been going on around town.

Sixers Ben Simmons headed to Rumor last night for SIPS After Dark.  Here he is with Legendary doorman with

Nicole Brewer: T-1 week til I’m back on CBS Philly! It will be extraordinarily difficult to leave my little ones, but I know it will get easier. (Right?!?!) And I’ll have the support of my colleagues and friends, especially fellow Momma Kate Bilo. Thank God for girlfriends who just “get it.”

Happy birthday to my niece Mimi Bateman. Here she is with my sister Crista and her hubby Michael.

Missing something, seems the City removed the planters along JFK Blvd. Hope they’re going to do something about the mismatched
concrete, it looks ridiculous.

And I hope they saved the trees as well. Where am I going to sit now, I guess I’ll go up to 18th and JFK they have a wall to sit on.

Timberland opened a Tree Lab Experiential Store yesterday at their King of Prussia store.
The experiential Tree Lab concept store will feature carefully curated product collections and brand stories in a gallery-style setting that will completely change every six weeks.  Similarly to an art gallery. Hope it comes to the Center City store as well, I love that place.

Congrats to Josh DeMarco who is a finalist in BehindTheChair’s “Haircut of the Year” competition.

Looks like Lombard Cafe (700 Sansom St.) is nearly opened. Michael Klein wrote about it earlier this year.
Now when is PJ Clarke’s opening across the street at the Curtis Center?
I did stop by Craftsman Row around the corner for my favorite Buffalo Cauliflower last week.

After the Car Show Sunday night, Mike and our friends headed to Barcelona Wine Bar on East Passyunk
What a surprise. The place was gorgeous, the staff was very nice, the food divine. Mike and I enjoyed the above dish Parrillada, which was $26.50 a person and so delicious.
