Hats On The Annual Ladies Day at the Devon Horse Show

The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair was transformed into The Enchanted Garden, the theme this year for the annual Ladies Day on Wednesday, May 29. Ladies were invited to gather with their girlfriends and their most festive hats for a beautiful afternoon in the Devon Pavilion, with live music, raffle prizes, a cocktail reception, and fabulous gift bags.

Then some of the ladies participated in the fabulous Hat Contest which included a panel of esteemed judges including SAVVY Main Line publisher Caroline O’Halloran , television personality Carson Kressley and Adam Joseph, 6ABC Meteorologist who honored the ladies in several categories.

Karen Toole Ebbert catches all the action as her daughter Amber Toole (black hat) looks on.

One of my favorite milliner’s is Beth Beverly who specializes in wearable mounts and unusual home decor. Her hats have won awards at the Devon Horse Show, Brandywine Polo and Radnor Hunt Clubs. She’s very creative. She’s never passed a road kill that she hasn’t seen a beautiful after life in.

The crew from Bloomingdale’s
Lula and daughter Dakota Ashbury enjoyed the day with her sister visiting from England. I chatted so much with them I forgot to ask her name. Lula is married to famous puppeteer Anthony Ashbury, who worked on Little Shop of Horrors, and was a friend of Jim Henson. Together Lula and Anthony owned a gem of an eatery in Pittman NJ called Sweet Lula’s.
I asked Lula how they came to settle in Pittman, after living in the UK and then for years in Connecticut. Lula told me she looked up quaint towns in the New Jersey, and Pittman, NJ along with Moorestown, NJ popped up. They chose Pittman, NJ and have never looked back. This is basically how they found the Devon Horse Show Ladies Day. Since Lula’s sister was visiting for the summer, they did a search on fun women’s event and found this “lovely event.” In a matter of two days they all went out and bought sun dresses and hats. They had a magical time, and look forward to visiting again next year. For more photos check out my column at CBS3Philly

The Devon Horse Show Week officially began on last Wednesday, May 25, 2016 as guests gathered on the Devon grounds for First Night, the next night there was a Ribbon Cutting. The annual event not only opens the show, but also gives guests a sneak preview of the artwork on display and for sale in the Art Gallery at Devon. The Horse Show is ongoing throughout the day and evening. Some days have a short break for dinner.  Gates will open daily at approximately 8:00 a.m. and close at approximately 10:00 p.m. each day.  The Country Fair area opens about 10:00 a.m. for the Midway and Shopping.  The first Sunday, the gates will open at 11:00 a.m. and the Horse Show classes will start at 12:00 p.m.

Coming up June 1st I’ll be attending the The Hat Contest and Ladies Luncheon at The Devon Horse Show. Carson Kressley, and Adam Joseph.

Founded in 1896, it is one of the most prestigious equestrian events in  the country and one of the largest volunteer fundraising efforts in the nation as well. The ong oing commitment to Bryn Mawr Hospital is extremely important to both  the leadership and  the  over  two thousand  of volunteers at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. Since 1972, the Devon  Country Fair has donated nearly $20 million to Bryn Mawr,  to support projects such as the  Emergency Department, the Comprehensive Breast Center, Maternal – Fetal Medicine program,  the Outpatient Diagnostic Center, and various other improvement programs
