CABBIE HAS HIS OWN DEMOLITION DERBY ON 19TH STREET BTWN CHESTNUT & MARKET

I know this ugly facade & signage would make anyone’s head explode, but more than likely it was a Demi Moore moment that caused some cab driver to create his own demolition derby on 19th Street near Smith Bar & Restaurant.I came upon this scene last night, 90 minutes after it happened. A cabbie turned left off Chestnut Street going the wrong way down 19th Street towards Market.
and caused a mess. Instead of just stopping after he realized his mistake, he swerved to the left and in a series of chain reactions,
starting with side swiping this car
hit a car immediately behind it (not pictured here) and riding up on it, as well as pushing into the next two cars.
resulting in a whole lotta damage (this is the car the cab rode up on). Can you imagine parking your car, paying the PPA and enjoying a Saturday night out and coming back to this.
I hear the cabbie tried to run away but was caught by a few bystanders and held until the cops came by. (This is the 3rd car.)
Oh wait, thanks to a reader I have the 4th and last car
broken axle (1st car), behind that someone’s entire exhaust system. The person who owned this red Volt, did not come and claim their car, so it wasn’t towed. Someone left a note on it that said, there was an accident while you were gone. Call this number for info & a tow.
I noticed the meter was running on the cab still, so were there passengers in the cab? There were no news vans on the scene, but hopefully the details will come out. The receipt before this fare was timed stamped at 23:06PM. I walked by about 12:30AM I’ve heard cabbies are notoriously under insured. I wonder how this one will play (pay) out.
Great coverage!! Only you would think to get a picture of the meter. I love your take on things!
It's a good thing that you're roaming all around the city and keep us up to date on the good, bad, and the ugly.
Great shots & story on Fox 29 Philly. You're killing it day and night dude.
Chris
I WAS IN THAT CAB FOR ALL OF THIS… attempting to go 4 blocks… only made it 2 before we were rear ended and he decided to go on a wild rampage
Quite a anti-semitic remark about the signage.
are you drunk? It's an ugly sign. How did it get passed the historic commission. It's brown on a black building with orange lettering.
NOT COOL to bash a local business based upon your subjective interpretation of what signage should be.
I'm not saying anything about the food, but I am saying this sign doesn't fit on this building. How did the strict historic commission allow it?
The sign is ugly. The commentators must be relatives or color blind. Hugh E good call.
Chris
What gives the historical commission rights to castrate creativity? The city is full of bad storefront allowances, right up to the top of the blue cross building with that blasted glaring blue and white cross sign at we Rittenhouse residents! The historical commish should care only about capturing and preserving vital history, not castrating creativity.
anti-semitic? That's crazy. Isn't your mother-in-law Jewish? In fact, isn't your partner?
That sign would be just as ugly if it was promoting BLT's as kosher burgers.
Get real anonymous.
My daughter was in the cab. But she didn't have to pay. It was terrifying!
the red car is a honda fit. spoke to owners. police never called them about accident. what a mess!
