TRANSFORMATION: EAKINS OVAL: THE NEW SHAPE OF FUN = THE OVAL

I’ve seen the plans and programing for the new Eakins Oval – The Oval, which I mentioned on May 20th in my PhillyMag column.

It’s no longer going to be a parking lot, but a park. Like another Square, but instead “The Oval.”

Someone was nice enough to send me the plans, but I’m only going to post these two shots so we can all anticipate the news as it’s rolled out after July 4th.

I for one an so excited to have this in my neighborhood. Wow Twister, and one so large. Now that could be fun. There’s lots and lots of interesting program for the space which should be operational by mid July.  Kinda reminds me of Bryant Park in NYC, or Rittenhouse Square park in our City, but with Twister and a ping pong table. You can read more about the plans over at Hidden City.

It was a a night of great expectations at Hotel Monaco as movers and shaker from across the
city and across the country came together to celebrate the Community Angel Awards
supporting under privileged youth.

Community Angel Foundation (a 501c3 non-profit organization)
was founded by Veniece Newton (standing with Roberto Clemente Jr.) who had one simple goal – every child
deserves to smile during the holidays. What started as a gesture of
kindness by providing toys to hundreds of children, evolved into the CAF
mission to “Educate , Encourage and Empower Youth” to become the next
generation of leaders. Veniece realized a gift is not enough to change a
life. To change lives, you must change minds and get to the heart of
the communities that are in need!

Veniece Newtown, Award Winner Don Peebles, and Katrina Peebles. Mr. Peebles is the chairman and chief executive of the Peebles
Corporation, one of the largest African-American-owned development
companies in the country. The company, which has its headquarters in
Coral Gables, Fla., specializes in residential and hospitality
developments.

The Young Friends of the Academy of Music Pool Party Fundraiser – or as I like to call it Babes & Boys in Swimtrunks

Last Sunday I headed out to the lush green fields of the Mainline

for the Young Friends of the Academy of Music Funday Sunday pool party fundraiser.

The hosts for the day were Sam Hamilton and Christie Honigman (Co-Chair of the Young Friends of the Academy of Music Ball), The Honigman Group, who along with Teresa Nino executed many of the fun details of the party. I love, love this invitation Christie created.

I was pretty excited since I saw two cardinals for the first time this spring.

When I spotted this I knew I was in for a great feast of BBQ.
The gangs all here: Kristyn Aldrich, Katie English and Phil Balderston, Jeff and Marilyn Kellmer, Christie Honigman,  Caitlin Joyce Gonzalez, yes she and Dani Gonzalez were married in a small service before their big Columbia wedding in August, Sam Hamilton,
Crawford Hamilton,

DJ Adrian Hardy and Sam Hamilton

Jeff Kellmer Private Jeweler and SunMyst Tanning/Teeth Whitening

Vasiliki Tsiouri, Wendy Wilhem and brother Joe Wilhem
Bill Tierney, Teresa Nino and Bubba’s DBRs –
“Drive by Ribbing.” A Gentleman hailing from Texas named Bubba pulled up in pickup truck hauling a giant BBQ smoker behind him and fed the entire Barnes staff delicious BBQ brisket, ribs, pulled pork and chicken. It was so good! Come back soon and often Bubba. Here is Bubba with staffer Kate Slattery in front of the smoker.

Great crowd came out to support.

Five Below donated over $350,000, wow thanks

She makes me look so good, she’s been a tremendous mentor and I’m a better photographer because of her direction. In the past year or so she began to allow me to choose what columns fit the best at Philly Mag, and that kind of confidence doesn’t come easy. Thanks. I have to run out, but Please check out my Philly Mag column with a great story on the Great Chefs event, after you check out these pixs & tidbits. The Voice Foundation’s Annual Voices of Summer Gala 2013

Last week The Voice Foundation held it’s annual gala and symposium in Philadelphia at the Westin Hotel.

The Voice Foundation is the world’s oldest and leading organization dedicated to the care and training of the human voice.

The black-tie event included the presentation of the Raymond and
Beverly Sackler Award to New Orleans music legend and Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame inductee Dr. John., here with Maria Russo, MM Executive Director.

Also honored were Anthony Laciura, “Eddie” on Boardwalk Empire and Vy Higginsen, Gospel for Teens producer (See CBS’s 60 Minutes!) and Susanne Mentzer, Metropolitan Opera star mezzo-soprano, here with Maria Russo and Dr. Robert Sataloff, Chairman (r)
Dahlia Sataloff, Michael Goldberg and Justice Sandra Schultz Newman, Gala Chair

Many of the guests were excited to meet the guests of honors.

Christina van Lierde, Marla Behlau and Christina Jackson
Emily Scheurina and Tara Nixon
Author Jerry Kaplan, Matt Edwards, and Edward Reisert, Choral Specialist, serves as an Executive Board member of the New York American Choral Directors Association
Renowned tap dancer David Pershica, Kathryn Hill,  Internationally known Lyric Mezzo Soprano and Dr John

The Voice Foundation’s
symposium brings together top vocal health professionals for a unique,
interdisciplinary opportunity to share the latest advances in scientific
and medical voice research. On Friday night after the week long events, the guests enjoy this annual gala to relax, mingle, and enjoy the talent of their fellow Scientists.
Barbara Caprilli and Nancy Solomon

One
of the most exciting elements of the gala, is when the visiting
scientists, doctors and guests entertain the crowds. Not only are these
people discovering ways to save vocal cords and careers, but they
themselves are talented in voice.
Barbara Caprilli

A little shaky, but in my defense the next day I had a fever of 101F, so I was coming down with something.

Danuta Nitecki, Jan Biras and Steve Hirsch – Drexel University
Vy HigginsenProducer – Radio Personality is founder
of the Mama Foundation and of

Gospel for Teens,
which has been highlighted three times by
CBS’s 60 Minutes; with The Voice Foundation’s

Ms Higginsen sister was Doris Troy, who wrote & sang “Just One Look”

In March 1983, “Mama, I Want to Sing,” a musical based on Ms. Troy’s
life, opened at the Heckscher Theater in Harlem. Written by Ms. Troy’s
younger sister Vy Higginsen and Mr. Wydro, who is Ms. Higginsen’s
husband.
Mama, I Want to Sing was the longest running off-Broadway Black musical in American history.
Ms Troy can also be heard in the background of such great songs as the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” She passed away in 2004.

Anthony Laciura as
“Eddie” in HBO’s hit seris
Boardwalk Empire.
The actor is also a character

The Right Place,
but the Wrong Time

The Symposium and Gala are  in conjunction
with Drexel University School of Medicine, Temple University,
the Academy of Vocal Arts and the American Institute
for Voice and Ear Research
After dinner, and the awards show, there was dancing. I’d call that a great night.
Thanks to The Voice Foundation for Having PhillyChitChat cover you again this year. I love that organizations like yours exist. What an extraordinary event, doctors, scientists gathering from all around the world to present papers on the world of voice. I always learn something fascinating at this event. I spoke with a young 16 year old girl who presented a paper on which voice level should be used when speaking to small dogs vs larger dogs.

PHILLY GAY PRIDE: PARADE & FACES IN THE CROWD

Yesterday was the Philadelphia Pride Parade, an event I’ve attended nearly every year since it’s inception 25 years ago. It’s important to me, to be out, to be visible, to show support for the GLBTQ etc community. People are still getting gay bashed, and even murdered over something I was born to be. I’m not going to get into the Bible discussion, I’m no longer someone who needs to prove myself to anyone that I’m loved by God just the way I am. I wish that had come to me years ago, as I wasted so much time trying to convince others. I am proud to be gay, ecstatic to have a partner of nearly 20 years that supports my incredible career, and I’m so grateful to Philly Pride’s Franny Price (Executive Director & owner of Spruce Street Video), Chuck Volz (Senior Advisor & owner of Finnegan’s Wake, a Philadelphia pub) for saving this institution, nurturing it and growing it to the huge success it is today. It’s the best “family” reunion of people who were there for me, sometimes when family didn’t understand me.

Dykes on Bikes
Including my attorney Giampolo Law Group | Group > Angela D. Giampolo
You can just listen to this as you read the entry, although it is fun to see Resort’s Casino’s
“Joan Rivers” shout it out
Henri David – with Grand Marshall Larry Felzer and Amber Hi
Rudy Flesher did an amazing job on MCing the parade. He should be Philly’s next Neil Patrick Harris, he is a great ad libber. Jim Donovan, CBS3 Philly – thank you for being out and for always supporting our community.

 Congrats to Franny
and her legions of supporters/volunteers who made yesterday a safe and
fabulous day to be 25 years proud of all we’ve accomplished as a
community; there are still so many great days ahead of us. Great job and
thanks everyone for coming out today! – John M Loesch Jr

We invite you to join The Attic on
November 16, 2013 at the Crystal Tea Room for a festive evening of
performances, awards, and dancing to celebrate 20 years of creating
opportunities for LGBTQ youth.
The Attic began in 1993 as a small,
weekly support group, and has since grown into a nationally recognized,
multi-service youth organization that is one of the largest community
centers in the U.S. committed exclusively to serving LGBTQ youth and
allies.   There is a lot celebrate!

Cheer New York on Market Street Sunday

So great to see my old softball asst coach John Fleur, who tells me he’s recently moved to Chicago and is loving life. It’s so evident in this photo, he looks great. So many great memories I have of playing for CBL and Spruce Street Video, with Philly Pride’s Franny Price & coach Mark Ratkus on my team.
John C. Anderson Apartments in Philadelphia — LGBT-friendly low income senior housing.
Honestly Mark Segal didn’t have to pursue something as necessary for our community. I really admire he really went after this project for our aging community.

Councilman Mark Squilla and supporters of Pride
 The Judges
I always get chills at this point

I don’t always understand, but I don’t judge. Everyone deserves respect.

How much would the Top of the Tower hate me if I got this confetti machine for my birthday?

 Tom and Ed

Sorry I didn’t stay for the whole day, I had a prior commitment. Next year, I’m not going anywhere else.
