3601 Market Officially Opened – A Bathroom with a view of Center City, Salt Water Pool, and a Jimmy John’s

3601 Market officially opened earlier this month, a $110 million, 28-story residential tower,  363-unit apartment building developed by Southern Land Company, and the first of many projects they’re working on in Philadelphia.
Father/Son Tim Downey and Dustin Downey of Soutland, cut the ribbon at the grand opening with Joe Reagan of Wexford Science + Technology,
The resort style roof-top salt-water pool

featuring a fire pit, grilling area
and private lounges with outdoor televisions.
Brian Sewell, Paul Neuroth and PJ Littleton
Jazmin Singleton, Mark Dent, and Bianca Gee in a one bedroom
Janine LaMarca and Rebecca Devine, Co-Founder of Maven Communications.
 One bedrooms start at $1556, 2 bedrooms $2722 t o $3306
Jeremy Cyr, Vice President – Multifamily Development at Southern Land Company and Gretchen Mast, Landscape Architect at Southern Land Company

Julie Moreningstar, Michael Prifti, Robert Lubas, Nicole Dress and Jennifer Burnside
24-hour fitness center featuring top of the line Matrix equipment along with Yoga and Spin studios.
Michelle Allen, Dr. Ayana Allen (Ayana moved in in late Summer, and loves the building. The amenities and location are perfect for City living) and Annie McCormack, 6ABC reporter
Michael Yetterberd, Matt Ritsko and Brian Sewell

 David Erikson and Bonny Patel
Jesse Dayton, Jordan McKinney, Cindy Defrancesco and Rod Fortner of Southern Land Company
I love how interesting the juxtaposition of 3601 Market is, on a slant at the corner of 36th and Market Streets, with amazing views of the City. I liked the building too, it was modern, a little more spacious then you’d find in the Center City new high rises, and not horribly over priced. The location is great too, but there’s no need to travel into Center City proper as University City has really become a hot bed of development over the years near Drexel and UPenn. 3601 doesn’t accept undergrads either, so no crazy parties.
Tim Downey presented Kathy Desmonds, Peoples Emergency Center a $5,000 check for the organization that helps the underserved.

 Casey and Jason Kranning Rush

Did I mention the views this place has?

And then there’s the salt water pool. I asked why a salt water pool, they told me that it was the perfect pool to have to achieve Leed Certification, which they have. It’s very green.
3601 Market will feature a Jimmy John’s
and Dunkin’ Donuts as including Schmear It, fancy Asian restaurant called Danlu  and Herben Quality Eats, a fast-casual healthy food concept based out of the nearby Enterprise Center, and caterer for the evening.

Statement by the President on the Retirement of Commissioner Charles Ramsey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 14, 2015

Statement by the President on the Retirement of Commissioner Charles Ramsey

I want to
offer my heartfelt gratitude to Commissioner Charles “Chuck” Ramsey for
his nearly five decades of leadership and service with some of this
nation’s largest law enforcement agencies.
From Chicago to DC to Philadelphia, Commissioner Ramsey has always
supported our women and men in uniform and the communities they bravely
serve and protect each and every day. While I’ve known about his
outstanding work over the years, it was when I appointed
Chuck as a co-chair of my Task Force on 21st Century Policing that I
was able to rely on his counsel and leadership. For several months
earlier this year, he played a vital role in bringing together leaders
from across the country to create a clear and concise
report including key recommendations for building stronger trust
between communities and the law enforcement agencies that protect them.
I am extraordinarily grateful for Chuck’s service and wish him an
enjoyable and restful retirement.

More Whoopi & Raven-Symone at Valley Forge Casino Music Fair on Saturday Night

Yesterday I did a fun piece on Philly Mag about Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symone at Valley Forge Casino Music Fair on Saturday Night

Here’s a few more interesting tidbits. On Saturday night Whoopi met fans backstage before she hit the stage. Many of the fans brought gifts, and this young man, Quintin Mayfield, brought a story. He told Whoopi that they had met 10 years ago, at a the show “Wake Up With Whoopi” She was his “Make a Wish” as he was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Whoopi spent a lot of time with him and she signed the back of his photo for him. It was super sweet to witness this interaction.

Then I went all crazy girl fan on Whoopi. I watch her nearly everyday, and really appreciate her contributions to society. I’ve photographed her many times in NYC when I was a working celebrity photographer. She was always super sweet. Sad she’s had such a difficult year with deaths of great friends and mentors like Robin Williams and Mike Nichols. Then her mother and brother died within a few years of each other.

Whoopi water

Whoopi started out her act relating her brother’s death. Now you wouldn’t think that was funny, except how she was told and by who. It was her brother’s girlfriend, who was hysterical and seemed to be making a lot of familial decisions until Whoopi found out they were only dating for one month. It was a great delivery. Reminds me of the episode on Good Wife when Will dies, and Diane confronts an intern who’s been there for a week, crying hysterical. Diane fires her on the spot, less funny, but same principle.

Then there was a period, no pun intended, where Whoopi talked about menopause, vagina’s and dicks. That was less funny to me, but the crowd laughed uncomfortably, hysterically with husbands pointing at wives.

Then she tackled current affairs starting with Ben Carson, then Donald Trump, lots of laughs, even though the audience was split GOP/DEM. You’d be surprised how many Republican’s like Whoopi’s sense of humor.

At one point in the show, Whoopi stopped and pointed to an audience member and said “Lady stop recording the show. Put down your phone. This show is for you, it’s intimate, personal and it’s happening right now. Don’t spoil it by watching it through a view finder.” And that was that, everyone seemed to put away their phones and enjoyed watching Whoopi in real time. After the stand up routine Whoopi took questions from the audience for about 35 minutes. It was great. She advised people on life, love and even adoption. Stressing to one gay couple that it would be great if they adopted an older child around 5 – 7, those kids are the ones that need the most love.

She was propositioned over and over for appearances on the View but stressed she had no pull in getting people scheduled. She spoke of her co-workers and said there is no stress with them. “We all have co-workers, and it’s a normal workplace. Sometimes you get along, sometimes you’re at each other, but for the most part it’s a normal day.” She loves her job and says she’s not going anywhere, anytime soon. She wakes up every morning, looks around at her digs and says, wow I live like a queen. To maintain that lifestyle, she has to have a job that can afford that.

During the show I heard  Raven-Symone was in the audience. I immediately scoured the crowd, when I didn’t see her I positioned myself near the stage door to catch her going in. Turns out she watched from backstage, and was nice when she let me go backstage and meet her when asked. She was super nice and told me it was her first time seeing Whoopi on stage. She loved it. You can tell that  Raven-Symone really respects Whoopi, when they duo spotted each other,  Raven-Symone ran towards Whoopi into a long, loving hug. i didn’t get that shot, I really felt it was too personal. It would have been the money shot, but sometimes those moments just have to be memories.

Old City is New Once Again, this weekend there’s a Festival To Celebrate

Old City was once once of the hot neighborhoods in Philly, but in the past few years it started to cool down as Center City’s Rittenhouse Square, East Passyunk and Northern Liberties took off.

I’m here to tell you that’s its finding it’s footing and is well on it’s way back. When I was contacted to shoot the Old City Festival this Sunday, I asked what’s happening in Old City, ie business’ and new development.

During the 90s and 00’s I used to be a tour guide for the Philadelphia Foundation of Architectural, so I know the neighborhood well and especially the history of the buildings. I wanted to get a tour of my old stomping grounds and I did this past Tuesday.

Old City Arts – Wood Turning Center

I met with Job Itzkowitz. Executive Director, Old City at the business district headquarters 231 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 to
get a tour of the neighborhood and ask a million questions. I think he
was surprised how much I knew about the neighborhood and how curious I
was. I was excited to share my tour spiel with him too cause I don’t get
to use it much anymore. We were joined by that Kory Aversa guy, you
know him, PR extraordinaire. He’s been working hard to get the word out
about the festival this Sunday.

Above is The former Shirt Corner. The iconic Old City building on the corner of 3rd and Market streets was replaced by the Shirt Corner Apartments,
a slick new living space with 59 rental units, and a couple
street-level commercial storefronts housing a CVS Pharmacy and
healthy take-away joint Snap Kitchen. Check out the mural they have inside the lobby here. Job showed me two of the windows fronting for CVS, will be used for rotating art exhibits. They have hinges that allow the windows to swing out to change the exhibit. Pretty cool. I really like how the builders blended the building into the neighborhood buildings with it’s perfected Federal Style design.

Old City is like Philly’s Silicone Valley with it’s tech business’ and cool co-working space Indy Hall. “In recent years, the corridor from roughly Market Street in Old City through Northern Liberties has been gradually filling with tech and web-centric office buildings and shared workspaces. Many there are calling it ‘N3rd Street,’ a play on “North 3rd Street.” (Technical.ly Philly)

There are a lot of new boutiques that have popped up over the past few years

As well as the standards like Roche Bobois and Dane Decor, which draws designers down from NYC to check out their furniture and home accessories.

Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shops –  302 Arch Street

I see a lot of ladies wearing clothing from Geisha House – 149 N 3rd St,
Just opened on Thursday – Blokes Barbershop & Gentleman’s Emporium. Job is saying hi to the owner Duke Dunne
Such a fun barbershop

151 N. 3rd Street, selling more than just a good hair cut
Lots of development is going on in the neighborhood too. Just recently I covered the ground breaking for The Bridge
United By Blue Coffeehouse and Clothier – 144 N 2nd St,
Bluestone Art Gallery has moved to 2nd Street. I love that place. The owners are so nice.
Watch this space

Indego Bikes. They say this is the most highly used. It’s the  only one that is located in the street.

At the Old City Festival on Sunday, check out food from all the local restaurateurs including Cuba Libre. See you there. I’ll be there around 2PM

Photos: Bok School hosts Mural Arts Program’s Open Source Party

Last Friday, Open Source kicked off their project at Bok school with a blockbuster opening party

Despite
the torrential nor’easter rains a good showing of people turned out to
enjoy the festivities. I couldn’t make it as I was covering another
awesome event down the street, the opening of Opera Philadelphia, check
out the gala complete with tent set up in the middle of Broad Street,
HERE. Any who I had Mural Arts send me a few pixs from their party too.

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (Mural Arts) has set Friday, October 2 for an opening party that screams “art prom.” Hosted at Bok, a former South Philly vocational high school evolving
into an innovative makerspace, the evening’s events include a DJ Set
by Sub Pop recording artist, Washed Out, along with performances
by electro pop band City Rain, jazz / soul / hip hop trio The Living

Mural Arts partnered with Mole Street, a Philadelphia experiential marketing and entertainment booking agency to secure an exciting line up of performers for the event. Washed Out’s Ernest Greene, a young guy from Georgia (via South Carolina) who makes bedroom
synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative. Many will be
familiar with the band’s tune, Feel It All Around, from the opening
credits of the hit IFC TV show, Portlandia. In addition to recording and
touring with a band, he takes time out to bring his DJ Set to select
venues. These often sold out shows bring a perfect party vibe.

Guests enjoyed an open “pour” session with the Dufala Brothers, who will be working out of Bok all month long. The Dufala Brothers will create a waste transfer station in the Edward Bok Vocational School in South
Philadelphia. The station is conceived to recycle aluminum from local
scrappers, which will be repurposed by the artists to make art.

Whoopi Goldberg Will Crack You Up This Weekend at Valley Forge Event Center 10/10/15

I remember catching one of Whoopi Goldberg‘s first comedy shows back in the 80s, she cracked me up. Then she got an HBO special, then Billy Crystal saw her, and she was on her way.  Now “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg will
perform stand-up comedy on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Valley Forge Casino Event Center
(Convention Center) at
8:00pm (doors open 7:00pm). Tickets are still available HERE

“We are proud to host
Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar award winners, Hall of Fame musicians, and
world-class comedians at the Valley Forge Music Fair,” said VFCR Chief
Marketing Officer Jennifer Galle. “Top caliber entertainment, along with
upscale dining options, a wide array of nightlife, a new poolside club
and an exclusive casino, make Valley Forge Casino Resort an unparalleled
entertainment destination.”

Goldberg is going to have you laughing in the aisle, cause she’s not afraid of taking on subjects that are making the headlines in today’s news, and putting it out there in Whoopi’s honest truth. Probably espousing views that we think but would never dare say.

If you’re a Whoopi fan we can’t miss this, cause I don’t think the girl is staying on the View much longer. So much drama going on on the set, I want to hear about it. I’ll see you Saturday.
On Sunday, October 11,
2015, Chicago frontman and solo star Peter Cetera will showcase his
unmistakable tenor voice, legendary songwriting skills and bass guitar
chops. The Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter will perform timeless
hits that helped him define an era of American rock music. Tickets will be $45, $65 and $75 each.
One of my favorite duets: Peter Cetera and Cher

Wedding Photos: Stephanie and Zach Mallgrave

Saturday I went to my 2nd cousins’ Stephanie  wedding to her soul mate Zach

It was a beautiful wedding
Gorgeous dress
Beaming parents Sue and Anthony Riccardi

One of the coolest bride’s bouquets ever. Stephanie and my Aunt Angie, her grandmother, began collecting antique pins and brooches for the past 2 years or so. Grandmom Riccardi (my mom’s sister) help assemble it before she died last December. As past past president of Delaware Valley Antiques Association, Aunt Angie knew vintage.

Photos: Connor Barwin Bikes To Work – Do we ever get tired of Connor, I don’t think so.

It’s a well known fact now that Connor Barwin likes to bike to work. (remember that’s how he found Ralph Brooks Park as he passed it on his way to work; then he helped renovate it through hard work and sweat equity.)

Connor told USA Today transportation alternatives was always an important principle in his life. “It’s something that I’ve always understood. Obviously my dad’s a city manager so he talked about public transit, he was always trying to improve the transit system in Detroit when I was growing up. When I played in Houston, which is not a public transit-friendly city, I did ride my bike and I did their one train line that they had more out of principle,” he said.

“But when I moved to Philly it was great because they have more of a real public transit system, a real subway system, now they have a real bike sharing program so when I use it, it’s purely out of function not principle which is great.”

Capital One, the official banking sponsor of the City of Philadelphia’s bike share program Indego, partnered with Connor Barwin and several bloggers in Philly to promote the popular co-sharing Bikes  and offer a $5 off deal for your first month’s membership.

It was a beautiful day for a ride. Linda Vertlieb, Frugal Philly Mom takes a #selfie with Connor

Kiera Smalls, @RideIndego • Co-Founder @CityFitGirls explains how to use an Indego bike. I had no idea the seat adjusted, I really need to go for a bike ride soon.
The crew before they headed out

I was really surprised to see Broad Street didn’t have a bike lane.
Connor Leads the Pack
Always a conservationist when he’s not riding his bike to work, Connor takes his Tesla.

I jumped in a car and said follow those bikes, I need to beat them to the stadium.

I caught up near Passyunk Ave

The house photographer had a sweet spot to capture the action

At some point my cab driver thought this would be a artistic shot of them, not so much I say.

Passing FDR Park

Arriving at the Linc

Indego recently opened up additional bike stations in Philly: 9th and Arch streets, 19th and Lombard streets, Girard and Leopard streets, 38th and Lancaster streets, 10th and Reed streets, 17th and Girard streets, 6th and Fairmount streets, 21st and Catherine streets, Broad and Federal streets, and 24th and Sansom streets.

Connor Barwin is triumphant
Let’s see your photos of your ride with Indego, use #RideIndego when posting.

Yesterday I was in Old City, there’s an Indego station on Market Street that sits in the street. I was told it was the most used station out of all of them in the City. It’s near 2nd Street.

Indego’s mission is to create a progressive and innovative way to travel, while promoting healthy and sustainable living and active transportation.
If you haven’t ridden with Indego yet, it’s never too late to start. Here’s how to create a membership!
  1. Go to rideindego.com, click the “Become a Member” button and choose “Indego30” membership.
  2. Enter your Capital One debit card’s first 6 digits as the promo code.
  3. Hop on a bike!
Capital One will offer its customers $5 off of their first month’s Indego membership when using a Capital One 360 Checking debit card.
If your not currently banking with Capital One, you can sign up online at CapitalOne.com or by visiting the Capital One Philadelphia-based Rittenhouse Café at 1636 Walnut Street (they have great sandwiches). Not only will you save money on Indego, but you can also take advantage of fee-free banking with 360 Checking by Capital One and a free nationwide ATM network – with over 200 ATMs around Philadelphia.
Disclosure / Disclaimer: This post was brought to you with the support of Capitol One. Philly Chit Chat received compensation for the purposes of this post. But I covered it like I cover all my events with the HughE flair. And who doesn’t want to look at a nearly a dozen Connor Barwin shots.
