Terrain Gardens at Devon Yard Opens with a Party

Terrain Gardens at Devon Yard Opens

Terrain
URBN’s lifestyle center, Terrain Gardens at Devon Yard opened about 2 weeks ago with a shopping area, event space, and two restaurants. Last night they celebrated with its vendors at a reveal party which also gave the vendors like photographers, event planners as idea of the layout for the space. The event space features four spaces—a reception room, garden porch, ceremony garden and bridal suite—and can hold up to 150 guests.

The aesthetic details, such as reclaimed barn wood floors, festival lights draped over open beams and an abundance of blooming flowers. The space can be configured to feature a dance floor, or you can have more tables in place for your event.

Terrain

Also located in the new lifestyle center is the popular amis trattoria serving Italian cuisine; This is going to be the new hottest spot on the Main Line to dine. The new eatery sits nearly 150 people, with an expansive outdoor eating area. (I had dinner there, this is what I ate)

there’s also an oversized Anthropologie on site

Dine on seasonal dishes at Terrain Cafe by Executive Chef Ryan Bloome
(They’re not open for dinner Monday or Tuesday was kinda bummed but Chef created the bread set up for me. Having never been to a Terrain I didn’t realize this was something they do at all their places, so adorable)

The dining area is adorable and perfect for the winter time blues, in warmer months there’s a nice outdoor dining area.

The sales people were helpful and answered all my questions. I loved the bio-dome kit.

I love Bonsai plantings, the little tree on the right, and most of the plantings for Bonsai was only $10. The completed pot was $100

This Is Us Films in PHILLY!!, Lance Bass Serenades, Stevie Wonder Signs for Fans, Plus More Philly Gossip

This Is Us Films in PHILLY!!, Lance Bass Serenades Countess Luann de Lesseps, Plus More Philly Gossip in

HughE Around Town

I hope you’re weekend is going fantastic. I’ve been staycationing this week in Philly and I’m sure glad I did as I got a tip on Saturday afternoon that the very popular show, we all watch – THIS IS US was filming in Historic Philly area (These photos are SPOILER ALERT). I left Mike and my pile of spring cleaning and set out to find the filming spot. It wasn’t at the obvious places like Elfreth’s Alley, Independence Hall or even Betsy Ross’ house (If you follow me on Instagram, you saw some of those places in my stories), but it was at the WHYY studios.

This
Even though I spent an hour looking for the filming location, luck was with me as at the time I found them they were filming right in the lobby at WHYY.  I know it looks like I’m in the bushes hiding,

This

but I was actually sitting on a bench outside the Constitution Center. I even tagged the shot #thisisus as a clue.

This
I didn’t know who was on set, but was so excited to catch actor Justin Hartley , who plays Kevin Pearson gazing out onto 6th Street, as legendary NPR host of Fresh Air, Terry Gross waits for instructions on the scene they are about to film. (The darn sidewalk was reflecting against the glass)

Also in this scene is actress Melanie Liburd (l), who plays Zoe, a potential new love interest for Kevin. It just made the news last week that Liburd has been signed on as a regular on the show. (Deadline)
This Is Us Season 3 premieres Tuesday, September 25 at 9 PM on NBC.

This

On the heels of “The Real Housewives of New York City’s” Season 10 reunion where Countess Luann de Lesseps was missing because #Healthfirst, the Countess was in high spirits Friday night during her #CountessAndFriends Cabaret show at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, NJ. Surprise guests who took the stage throughout the evening included Michelle Buteau, Lance Bass, Amber Martin and Mykal Kilgore. (photo provided by Borgata) A few snippets from the show:

This week’s reunion: “I watched five minutes of it and it was so dark. I was like, Jesus. Bethenny did a great job because she had her hands full. Wow. Well, you know Carole’s gone now” to the crowd erupting.
Which Housewife from the franchise she’d want to be stranded on an island with: “I think I would enjoy Lisa Vanderpump. At least we’d have a lot to talk about because she’s an educated lady. We’d have a lot of stories to swap. We would swap jewelry.”
Lu ended the evening thanking the crowd. “To be up here and have you guys come and fill up this venue. This is the biggest venue I’ve played to date. I’m so overwhelmed with joy, I can’t even tell you,” as “L.O.V.E.” from Michael Bublé began to play. Her encore concluded the show with her fan-favorite hit, “Chic, C’est La Vie.”

Speaking of the  Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, NJ., Stevie Wonder performed two shows there this weekend, Friday and Saturday. Team Derek caught up with the legendary singer where he signed a few items for the big fan. We were impressed by Stevie’s signature it is much better than half of Hollywood’s graph.

Across the bay in Brigantine, NJ another Steve, NBC10 meteorologist Steve Sosna was having a blast this one with his TV Wife, anchor Denise Nakano. The duo hung out with their husbands Jonathan Lovitz and Paul Guercio, went clamming, then grilled them on the barby on the beach. I’d say that was a darn good time, look at all those clams. I hope they had a lot of bug spray on, Brigantine is notorious for green heads. I went bird watching there last month, forgot my spray and became the prey.

Speaking of on the air spouses, does any two people have more fun on TV than Fox29’s Lauren Johnson and Meteorologist Mike Masco, who recently celebrated his birthday. What a dynamic duo, they’re so hysterical. Mike’s going to be extra today as he just worked a double on Saturday. I’d been following his twitter account for a couple years, enjoying his crazy delivery on the forecast, and am so excited he’s permanent on Fox 29 now. Catch him on the weekends, where I’ll be popping up once in awhile this fall.

Congrats to my friends who wore sworn in this week by Judge Dan Anders, who married Mike and I four years ago at City Hall.
Congrats to Dana and Troy Smith who were recently married by Mayor Jim Kenney at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse!!

If you click on #SaveTheDatePHL on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, you’ll find fun events to attend as that’s the hashtag I use. Coming up on Thursday is a fun event where you can adopt Fido, plus be served by one of your favorite Phillies players. The Phanatic will be on hand as well. It’s at Morgan’s Pier and it’s called Puppapalooza at the Pier, a Phillies-themed event, raises funds and awareness for the Pennsylvania SPCA’s mission of rescuing animals from cruelty and neglect, rehabilitating them medically and behaviorally and ultimately finding them the loving homes they have always deserved.  I’ll be there so bring your smile.

This
Tonight’s the August Full Moon.
Check back tomorrow to see which events I photographed this weekend, and then read more
HughE Around Town on Thursday. I think Thursday’s and Sunday’s are going to be the regular days this fall, with the occasional breaking gossip news as it happens.  OK now go out and enjoy the day!!

Patti LaBelle’s Sold Out Party in the Park and Aretha Franklin Dedication

Patti LaBelle’s Sold Out Party in the Park happened last night, where she spoke of Aretha Franklin

Last night marked my 18th Patti LaBelle concert, you could call me a fan. It’s my 3rd Patti Patti concert this year, which is so thrilling
to me as there was a Patti drought for a few years in the oo’s in Philly. I saw her in NYC then.
The concert was SOLD OUT, which was fabulous. Last year at the Dell it rained, and it pained me for Patti to see people didn’t turn
out for the Godmother of Soul. First stop for me was the Visit Philly
Homesick Philly party. They gave out cool “gift bags” with xoxo key chains and a blanket for the grass.
There were lots of treats representing Philly, especially if you’re homesick
Chill Moody, the Nice rapper and Homesick Ambassador was on hand, as well as the legendary Ms Patty Jackson.

The evening began with the sexy, calming voice of Philly-based jazz singer Laurin Talese, who was encouraged to do 2 encores from the crowd that adored her.
In between acts is where the Party in the Park comes alive with DJ Gary O playing music

that gets the crowd up on their feet dancing

MCing the evening was Patty Jackson, WDAS, who brought out her son, Robert on stage. It was great to see him as over the years Patty has talked about him
and we all have seen him grow into a fine young man.

First time appearance at the Dell, Grammy-winning jazz singer Gregory Porter entertained the crowd for a good part of an hour, and even though he stood between Patti and me, I didn’t mind as his songs were smooth and full of stories.

More crowd up on their feet

Party in the Park
and in the aisles

Then it was Ms Patti LaBelle’s time, she sang a lot of her classic songs – When You Feel Blesses, On My Own and my favorite If Only You Knew, and even took requests from the audience a few times

Singing Little Girls to this women, who’s told Patty that she and her mother were friends, but her mom has since passed. BTW I love that Ms Patti has a coat rack on stage.

Patti LaBelle then tearfully paid tribute to Aretha Franklin.  Patti went on to tell us that after Aretha Franklin died, her sister in law called her and asked her to perform at her service Aug 31, they said Aretha planned her service in December and Patti Labelle was at the the top of the list. Unfortunately Patti is already booked and unable to make it as she’s at the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival August 31. So at last night’s concert Patti paid tribute to Aretha Franklin and recorded one of her signature songs ‘You are my Friend’ to be played at the service next week. (Here’s a story on who’s playing at Aretha’s funeral)

Patti reflected on life and love during her concert, and encouraged others to choose love over hate, as well as cherish their lives as we never know when
it’s our time to go.

She also mentioned her friend Bunny Sigler who passed last year. Patti also brought out her grandbabies – Gia has her own instagram, but hasn’t posted in awhile
Heading to my car I ran into this fun duo with their friends.
Patti LaBelle you are a Philadelphia Treasure!!!
Thank you!!
Til next time.

Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Near Atlantic City (Not LBI like Google Says)

Refuge
Whenever time allots, and I’m near AC, I like to stop at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Located about 20 minutes outside
of AC, off of Route 9, is a tranquil wildlife refuge filled with beautiful birds, sea creatures and other wildlife. It’s an affordable $4 a car, but we like to donate a little more as it’s such a gem.

There are look outs over the marsh plus an 8 mile gravel looped road with pull offs for you to enjoy.
You can see the AC skyline in the distance.

Bring bug spray, as the green heads are happy to see you. We were there on a particularly windy day which saved us
It’s a great place to go and take the kids to enjoy nature and view wildlife in their natural habitat. It’s also a great rainy day activity if you just take the drive without doing any of the hiking trails.

My Favorite Diner en Blanc Photos

On Thursday, August 16, 2018 over 5,500 guests attended Le Dîner en Blanc – Philadelphia held at City Hall and Thomas Paine Plaza. This was the seventh edition in the City of Brotherly Love and the largest Dîner en Blanc gathering in the country, so far this summer, for the second year in a row. Guests had the opportunity to explore one of the city’s most iconic landmarks while mingling amongst fellow Philadelphians. The following photos are a few of my favorites….

Favorite
I bet a lot of the folks headed to Diner en Blanc wished they could have dove into Swann Fountain
There are some people I see just once a year and that’s Tom and Theresa Grady, with table mate Nicole Bradshaw

This will go down as the best party ever at Dilworth Park

Melanie Highbloom – thanks for making me feel so special

“This year we were celebrating the 30th anniversary of the event’s creation in Paris that brought so many people together throughout the world,” said Le Dîner en Blanc – Philadelphia co-host Natanya DiBona. “We selected City Hall, including Dilworth Park and Paine Plaza, this year because it’s located in the heart of our city. We wanted to celebrate Philadelphia as an international destination, and highlight our culturally rich and diverse city.”

Sparkler time to kick off the dance party

Tabletop Style At Diner En Blanc Philly 2018

Tabletop Style At Diner En Blanc Philly 2018

Tabletop
Diner En Blanc, which originated out of Europe is an all white picnic party that pops up in various cities for one night only. The location is kept a secret until the very last minute, guests wear elegant white clothes and bring their own tables, decoration and food (although you can order from an onsite caterer beforehand as well as obtain flowers). I’m always amazing that they cart the tables, and it’s impressive when they bring elaborate table settings as well. Especially when Diner en Blanc Philly is always held the 3rd Thursday in August when it’s so HOT! But people do it, they love it and every year the party grows.

Philadelphia’s 7th annual Diner en Blanc is less than a month away and the event’s two passionate organizers — Natanya DiBona and Kayli Moran

How amazing is this wood carving centerpiece including the Philly skyline

Just beautiful

Launched with just a handful of friends by François Pasquier nearly 30 years ago, Le Dîner en Blanc® de Paris now assembles over 10,000 guest every year, with a record 15,000 people attending the 25th anniversary in 2013.

Anyone may participate, however everyone must remain simple and leave their social status at home. During the Dîner, we are all equal and no one enjoys preferential treatment – François Pasquier

The simplest things in life, like friendship, are universal. Any event that promotes sharing and discussions over a meal can happen in any country in the world: you just have to give it a name, and the name today is Le Dîner en Blanc.  – François Pasquier

Wow, did they carry the water too that was used in the floating candle display?
Aisha Harris-Leone and her amazing table. You can’t tell from this photo, but her dress is lit up as well.

This young lady’s table included a tree which featured photos from the previous year she and her friends attended
It’s just amazing people will not only attend the event, but bring such elaborate table decor.

Dîner en Blanc – Philadelphia – The Story Unfolds

Dîner en Blanc – Philadelphia – The Set Up

Another edition of the popular pop up summer white party – Dîner en Blanc is in the books.  This year the pop-up party celebrated the 7th time they had dinner in a public space in Philadelphia.  Although one of the elements of the party is the secret location, it’s far from a secret as the organizers have to scout out a perfect location, one that is easy to access through public transportation, easy to walk to, then they rent the spot, get permits, insurance, arrange for security, lighting, sound and entertainment (this year they had 75 performers), and contract many of the vendors who operate during the event.  The ticket for the event is an affordable $45 a person, but the reason people interpreted as exclusive is it’s difficult to get in as it’s done on a lottery system and every year only 300 more spots open up (which is actually a lot. Many of the events I cover have 200 people and that’s a lot.) Currently 5,500 people are “members”, every year it they increase the number 200, making next years guest list 5,700 attendees. At 5300 this year, it’s the 2nd time it’s become the LARGEST IN THE COUNTRY, beating out even NYC where the event has been held longer than Philly.

Blanc

I headed out to the Parkway on August 16, 2018, around 6PM to find diners on their way to meeting spots to join their table leaders. The Diner en Blanc organizers purposely start the assembling of people after rush hour to not affect the bulk of those heading home. Having the event on a 3rd Thursday in August is also helpful, as many people are squeezing the last days of summer on vacation, and the City is fairly empty.

I saw quite a few people heading to the Art Museum steps to board buses to head to the secret location. I remember the days I didn’t know the location before the day of the event, it was always a fun scavenger hunt trying to guess the final destination.  It’s amazing to see the event grow to 5,500, the first year. 2012, which was held at Logan Circle, was just 1300 guests.
As one of the official event photographers of Diner en Blanc,

I knew a few days before so that I could scout out the best vantage points for photographing the set up.

Plus I don’t want to be at a meeting spot too far away from the final spot so I can capture the shots I want.
These folks are headed to Logan Fountain for their meeting spot. (Thanks to the Solomon’s for the use of their Apt, and to Pipeline co-working space)
The meeting spot at Logan Fountain

Launched with just a handful of friends by François Pasquier nearly 30 years ago, Le Dîner en Blanc® de Paris now assembles over 10,000 guest every year, with a record 15,000 people attending the 25th anniversary in 2013. The French capital’s most prestigious sites have played host the event over the years: The Pont des Arts, the Eiffel Tower, Place Vendôme, the Château de Versailles, the Esplanade de Notre-Dame, the Esplanade des Invalides, the periphery of the Place de l’Étoile, the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde, Le Louvre Pyramid, Trocadéro Esplanade, and the Palais Royal Garden!

Folks waiting at 15th & JFK for the next instruction from their Table Leader, except that women in the orange as that shirt wouldn’t fly at an event where you’re supposed to wear all white, off white happens as well tooI don’t think Dilworth Park has ever been this clean. The 5 second rule definitely applies here.
The Table Leaders names are marked down in rows in order to lay the tables down in an orderly fashion. All of this is done on paper months before to guarantee they can fit all 2750 tables
At the last minute, the secret location is revealed to thousands of friends who have all been patiently waiting to learn where “Dîner en Blanc” will take place.
The tables will be covering as much of the City Hall apron as possible, at the time of the confirmation with the City for the space, it seems like the City had a secret of their own that the north and east side would be under construction. Which Diner en Blanc found out, and ICE protestors, a few weeks ago.

Yes, consenting guests pay to cart their tables, food, and supplies to the summer pop up dinner, and they continue to come back year after year to do it. It’s like going to the beach and carting well everything you need, without the sweat running down your face burning your eyes with SPF. Diner en Blanc also has a charity component.  Cherri Craig KYW Radio report – Secretive Dîner en Blanc this week to benefit Broad Street Ministry
These folks arrived first and placed their tables in their assigned spot in the Courtyard of City Hall.
Table settings can be simplistic or elaborate like this group table was. Tomorrow I’ll showcase the best table decor.

Diners place their tables in order according to directions from their Table Leaders.
The tables have to be a certain size as it is taken under consideration for the lay out. 27″ x 27″ x 27″

Over 75 artists, musicians, performers, and DJs put on lively shows throughout the City Hall courtyard, Dilworth Park, and Paine Plaza. The local talent reflected the international theme and included the infamous Drew Nugent Band with Queen Esther, the Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra, Siempre Salsa Philly, John Byrne Band & Cummins Irish Dancers, the West Philly Orchestra, and many more. Guests also enjoyed ping pong courtesy of SPiN Philadelphia and cheered on skateboarders dressed in white riding through the crowds.

Around 715pm attendees wave their linen napkins to signify the start of dinner

Here is the table set up in the courtyard
At 9:15 the sparklers come out, which signifies the end of dinner, and the beginning of the dance party

There was music in every nook and cranny at the event, entertaining the vast crowd.
This spot is across from McCormick & Schmidt’s

The West Philly Orchestra was entertaining in City Hall Courtyard

The local talent reflected the international theme which included the notorious Drew Nugent Band alongside Queen Esther, the Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra, Siempre Salsa Philly, John Byrne Band & Cummins Irish Dancers, and the West Philly Orchestra. There was dancing in every open space.

Artist Alloyius Mcilwaine was on-site painting a multi-colored canvas of the Philadelphia skyline, to be auctioned off to benefit Broad Street Ministry, a non-profit that delivers meals and aid to individuals in need.

Dîner en Blanc Philadelphia is an entirely volunteer-run organization, from the co-hosts to the group leaders, table hosts and on-site coordinators. This event was planned and executed by individuals who are committed to bringing a unique and special event to the City of Philadelphia.

And before you know it 4 hours has passed and another Diner en Blanc Philly is in the books.
As we have seen other DEB cities struggle to use public space or to work with their city officials, we are reminded again and again of how fortunate we are to be planning this event in the City of Philadelphia. In particular, we thank the Office of the City Representative, Managing Director’s Office, Streets Department, Philadelphia Police Department & Philadelphia Fire Department.  Special thanks to Jazelle Jones, Mechelle Sabb, & Robert Allen in the Managing Director’s Office who helped us orchestrate city services for the event, from street closures to police to sanitation services.

Photos: New Target in Northern Liberties Opens

Photos: New Target in Northern Liberties Opens

Another Target has opened in “Center City”, this one in Northern Liberties at 456 North 5th, a building formerly the headquarters of Destination Maternity . Some people define Center City between Spring Garden and South Street (don’t get me started about the 6th Boro, ok). This Target is much different than the ones who have come on line over the passed two years when Target started opening the urban stores.

Target
It’s much larger than all of the small format stores at 47,000-square-foot space, including the one near me in Callowhill  which is 30,000-square-feet. The parking lot is larger, and the merchandise selection is plentiful.
You can enter/exit via 5th Street, which is one way going towards Vine Street. It’s odd that they curved the driveway here, maybe to dissuade people from using it as a shortcut, which I saw someone do yesterday. They should probably put install a few speed bumps to discourage that from becoming a habit.

Or enter/exit via 6th Street, towards Spring Garden.

Let’s head inside, the doors are to the right of the cashiers, there are about 6 self check out stations. As you walk in the door there are seasonal items for sale,

and then the men’s department is straight ahead.Target is still in summer mode, so if you need shorts or a t-shirt they still have them unlike other department stores.

On the right of the entrance is the women’s department. It’s extensive, and has fitting rooms.

I headed to the “food market” in the back. Prices looked good, and it’s going to really convenient for the supermarket starved area. Acme on 2nd and Girard is about a mile away, but going in all over directions a grocery store is much further.

I checked out the soda prices, and again it looks like Target is absorbing the “Soda Tax” as the soda is priced without the tax. This is a 12 pack of soda for only $4.99

There’s a small selection of grab and go sandwiches, I was on my way to a gig and grabbed a turkey salad sandwich, and it was delicious. Only $4.29, that’s a deal.

The small format Target is chock full of items we need for everyday living, like cleaning supplies, paper products and shampoo.

There’s even a travel section, with luggage

A tech section with TV’s and other electronics
It’s fun to see all these Target’s open, a story I broke in 2014 when I wrote Target was looking to open
stores in urban settings. They’ve certainly opened more than I imagined, they’re taking over like a Wawa

Toys, and dolls. I picked up a few games for game night.
Children’s clothes
You’re going to need a coffee after the exhausting shopping trip. This one is perfectly in the far right corner, with tables, and a great view of the City.
I love the windows at the new Target, which allows so much natural light into the store

If you’re wondering where the new Target is, this is the building fronting Spring Garden Street, the former Destination Maternity building between 5th & 6th Streets. (Google)

On the left is Yards Brewing Company which moved in earlier this year. (Photo)

The right side will be the City Archives (Photo)

This was the back of the building (Google)

Which now looks like this
Finally when I took this photo yesterday, I was wondering what was going in the fenced in area on the right? This morning that has been answered in a Jacob Adelman column,

where he reports Alliance Partners HSP LLCs plan calls for a building apartments that would run along Fifth Street and retail space facing the Target parking lot. Check out Jacob’s column for more details.

Tonight is Diner en Blanc, so check back here tomorrow for all the fashions, table settings and fun!!
