Komen Philadelphia hosted its More Than Pink Party Distributes Funding

Komen Philadelphia hosted its More Than Pink Party at Cescaphe’s Vie last month. It’s crazy how time escapes us.

Komen

I published these photos in other outlets, but I wanted to pay personal attention to this event as it was informative and fun to “follow the money” that is donated by you, and sponsors.

Komen
Denise DiSimone, Evelyn Rodriguez, Elaine Groban and Sloane Six

For 27 years, Elaine I. Grobman CEO, Susan G Komen Philadelphia has built the Komen Philadelphia organization’s following by letting others tell their stories – from survivors to volunteers, donors to sponsors.

Komen
Attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour and a seated program emceed by CBS3‘s Jessica Dean and Natasha Brown.
Jessica talked about the three years she’s been involved with Komen Philadelphia and honored her co-worker Natasha Brown mentioning she’s
been with Komen Philadelphia for over a decade, and currently serves on the Komen Philadelphia Board of Directors.

Komen
Dr. Richard Pestell , President of the Pennsylvania Cancer and Regenerative Medicine Research Center, Baruch S. Blumberg Institute and Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center, was given the Jamie Brook Lieberman Honor for exceptional cancer care. Josh Lieberman, Carole Lieberman, Dr. Richard Pestell (accepting the Jamie Brooke Lieberman Honor) and Jules Lieberman. The Brook Lieberman Remembrance Award celebrates the life and legacy of a women taken by breast cancer at the young age of 35. The award is bestowed on an individual who, like Jamie, show a commitment to the cause, who want to lead in making a significant change, and who not only have hope in the cures but are every day in pursuit of saving lives.

Komen

The party was called “More Than Pink” as it’s the new identity for Komen Philadelphia. It’s to remind everyone that they are more than just a color. More Than Pink drives home the point that their strength comes from the people, not the color. The people are most important in uniting the mission. More than Pink is a movement that encompasses all the people who give Komen power.

During a Q&A session at the event, Steve Rosen as husband Ron Blum looks on. Steve’s question concerned the time when
Komen national didn’t support Planned Parenthood, and Komen Philadelphia was the first of the chapters to speak up against that stance.
Eventually Komen national backed away from the issue, continued funding to Planned Parenthood where underserved women are able to
get the services they need.

Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses teach patients about breast care, connect patients to resources to help them get vital biopsies, ultrasounds, and mammograms, and follow up to make sure patients are cared for with the attention they need and deserve. – See more at: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/cancer/breast-cancer-screenings#sthash.MpaBDvd6.dpuf
Komen
The biggest need in the breast cancer movement in 2017 is finding a solution in reaching the women who are coming to Komen too late, getting medical attention on time.  Komen’s mission is to get out there, into the shadows and bring them into awareness. We need to educate women about clinics and hospitals so they can get the treatments for early detection of breast cancer and get it treated early.
Komen
Guests celebrated another successful year of fundraising by giving back to 15 local healthcare organizations. This year Komen Philadelphia distributed nearly three-quarters-of-one-million dollars to the following organizations; They included
Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health, Bayhealth Medical Center, Christiana Care Health Services, Crozer-Keystone Community Foundation, Drexel University College of Medicine, Einstein Medical Center, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Healthy Promotion Council of Southeastern Pa, Lancaster General Hospital, MD Ander Cancer Center at Cooper, Penn Medicine – Abramson Cancer Center, Phila Corporation for Agingin, Phila Depat of Public Health and
The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

Komen

The Race for the Cure is coming up on May 14, and we pride ourselves on wearing pink to show solidarity, it is also very important to register and sponsor a walker in the Race for the Cure. Funds from the walk go to provide services and awareness in our area to eradicated breast cancer. SO REMEMBER TO REGISTER

Ellen DeGeneres Tweets She’s Coming To Philly and Shutting down Walnut Street #ElleninPhilly

Ellen DeGeneres Tweets She’s Coming To Philly: ‘I’m Going To Shut Down A Couple Of Blocks’
Ellen and I follow each other, it’s true. 66.2 Million people are following her, and she’s following 36ks. I don’t know why she picked me but hopefully she’s going
to tip me off to why she’s closing a few blocks in Philly on Wednesday. Yes you heard it right, she just tweeted this.

ellen
Since she follows me I thought we should have lunch while she’s in town

UPDATE most of new info is at bottom of post

ellen

One of my readers on FB says Ellen is debuting her shoe line on QVC on Thursday, so maybe that’s why she’s in town. She’s gonna give us all shoes?
I could always use a nice pair.

ellen

I read her tweet moments after she tweeted it while I was enjoying Ravioli’s at Scarpetta – Philadelphia
cause you know it’s National Ravioli Day.

When I left I walked up and down Walnut Street, well at least 5 blocks of it near Rittenhouse Square, and I did find No Parking Signs, so maybe
The Ellen Show will be doing something on the 1700 & 1800 block of Walnut. Or it could be for the movie Untouchable, which is filming maybe in a lovely kitchen of someone’s
penthouse apartment on the Square, or who knows these days they could be putting up another high rise or digging up the street.

ellen
One thing I do know for sure, people are loosing it over #ElleninPhilly cause my Instagram got 396 likes, and 40 comments in less than an hour. It’s kinda a sad since it took me nearly a ha;f a day to get that many likes when I got married, but whatever, I guess I never give away $10,000 from Shutterfly or a car, or have Christmas presents for my audience.

Road Closures for #ElleninPhilly

Anywhoo, let’s start a hashtag #ElleninPhilly so we can all keep track of what’s going on, I promise to let you know, what I know, when I find out.

OH wait I just got an update from someone in the KNOW – It’s the 1600 Block of Walnut Street, sometime in the afternoon.

Chances Are You Saw: Johnny Matthis, Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman, The Flyers and Eagles Out in Philly

Chances Are You Saw: Johnny Matthis, Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman, The Flyers and Eagles Out in Philly

Sunday, Sunday and time for another edition of PhillyChitChat, Philly Gossip

Mathis
Kevin Hart is still in town filming Untouchable with Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. Most of the shoots are now happening in Aston at the Sun Studio, but look for them to come into Philly one more time next week, meaning the week of March 27. The film is schedule to wrap the week of April 2. None of the actors have been spotted out at night until this week. Hart was spotted at Del Frisco’s Wednesday night. Thursday he took in his friend Keith Robinson‘s show at Helium Comedy Club at 2031 Sansom Street. Then jumped up on stage and did an impromptu set for 20 minutes.

Mathis

Last week the Flyers stopped by Helium Comedy Club to get a few laughs: From left to right it’s Brayden Schenn, Nick Cousins, Michael Del Zotto, comedian Colin Kane, Michael Raffl, Claude Giriox and Jakob Voracek.

Mathis

Team Derek welcomed Johnny Matthis to town when he arrived at PHL on Thursday. Matthis performed last night at the Golden Nugget Casino  as part of the Johnny Mathis 60th & 61st Anniversary Concert Schedule

Mathis
She’s the King of the World. Shania Twain was in town this week, here she’s posing on a heap of snow near Logan Hotel (maybe she ran into Alex Trebek there as he did a meet and greet with fans on Wed. )  No word on what she was doing in town, but she was here for about 3 days. She even took in the Flyers game.
Shania Twain is releasing her first new album in 15 years, and she revealed to Rolling Stone that some of the songs are inspired by her messy divorce from her producer and husband Robert “Mutt” Lange.  Oddly enough he left her for her best friend, and Shania ended up marrying her best friend’s husband, Frederic Thiebaud.

Mathis

A few Eagles Players stopped  by Del Frisco’s for the “Welcome Party” for Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.

Former Sixers now with the Dallas Mavericks Nerlen Noels gave out cheese steaks to fans who stopped by Chickie’s & Pete’s in South Philly on Thursday night. Later that evening he was spotted catching up with friends, including Bachelor Craig Robinson, at Del Frisco’s. Friday afternoon before the game Mark Cuban, of Shark Tank fame, and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, was spotted at the Ritz Carlton having lunch at Aqimero by Richard Sandoval . At the game against the Sixers Friday night, Cuban sat court side as his team lost;

Last weekend the hot Latin American Carlos Jose Matamoros and his model wife Christina Autumn Harzer were in AC where they stayed at the Tropicana and had dinner at Cuba Libre and Hooters. They then spent a few days in Philly stopping by the Rocky Steps, posing with the Rocky Statue, stood in his footprints and played in the snow.

Mathis

Congrats Joseph Thomas and Patrick Hagerty on your wedding day.

Mathis

Congrats to Paul and Liz who got engaged at the Philadelphia Flower Show earlier this week.
TODAY IS THE LAST DAY FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT, what I think was the best show in years. I like all the shows, but
this was the best. Check back on Thursday for more Philly Chit Chat Gossip, and every day this week for events I photographed.

“We want to introduce rich flavors and combinations that people in Philly would never had thought of before,” said one of the three partners, Simon Arends. “We also want to showcase who Venezuelans are and as one of the different stories that come from Latin America.”

Puyero

Puyero currently seats 22 people inside, with expanded seating coming outside later in the spring. Starting this Friday, Puyero will open every day (Tuesday through Sunday) at 11:30am for lunch and stay open through dinner until 10:00pm Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, and 11:00pm on Friday and Saturday.
Puyero

The entire menu is available during lunch and dinner – with brunch options to come later in the spring. Delivery is now being offered through Caviar. Parking for Puyero is available at meter spots along 4th and South streets, or there are nearby parking lots in the District. The restaurant is in walking distance from Old City, Rittenhouse, Center City, South Philadelphia and the waterfront.

Puyero

DRINKS

Puyero also serves traditional sweet and tropical drinks, perfect for those hot South Street days (and nights):

* Papelon con limon – sugar cane sweetened water with lemon
* Chicha – a rice based, kind of shake with cinnamon
* Cilantro lemonade – a twist on the lemonade adding a touch of cilantro
* Tamarind juice – made from tamarind fruit with simple syrup.

Other juices and drinks will be added based on seasonal fruit selections available

Puyero

Puyero serves Venezuelan street food with a special focus on the arepa – the quintessential Venezuelan plate – and the patacon – a sandwich made from plantains. Savory sides include the Venezuelan favorite tequeños – cheese wrapped with dough which is later deep fried – which goes great with the house-made sauces. There is also the very richly flavored mandocas – a combination of corn flour, plantains and a hint of cinnamon topped with salty white cheese and cream. Plus, don’t miss the fried yucca served with guasacaca – an avocado based mix.

The green mayo is the kind of sauce that one might find when they are eating in street carts. Pink sauce sriracha, and chipotle ketchup are spicy twists on typical sauces used for traditional sides. Papaya hot sauce is sweet and spicy. “In Venezuela we like to put sauces on our food. We like to grab the container and spray all that sauce on sides (tequenos and pastelitos), arepas, empanadas, burgers, hotdogs, anything you can think of…we have four sauces right now,” said Simon.
