Helping Homeless Families: Drueding Center Stairway to Our Future Gala

Helping Homeless Families: Drueding Center Stairway to Our Future Gala on March 25, 2017
at the Loews Hotel

Good Monday, I hope you all have a wonderful week. I get to cover many glamorous events, notable events, but it’s the charity events that really feed my soul. Last week I covered two organizations which I had never heard about before SPIN and the Drueding Center. I am so grateful to be able to shed some light on these amazing organizations that do extraordinary things for those in crisis.

Drueding

The Sisters of the Holy Redeemer founded Drueding Center in 1987 as Project Rainbow.  They serve the most vulnerable, helping them recover the dignity of standing on their own.  Unique among Philadelphia’s transitional housing organizations in the length of time they stay involved with families—up to seven years after they leave Drueding Center—and in the quality and breadth of our interconnected programs.

After the cocktail party the guests headed into the beautifully decorated ballroom for dinner and a short program

As Philadelphia’s first transitional housing program for homeless women and children, Drueding Center has developed a comprehensive program that meets the needs of both generations of our young families. We acknowledge that healing takes time, and preserve our families’ achievements through an extensive After Care program, forever breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness.  We are proud to report that we are a program that works.

I headed upstairs to the 18th Annual Black-Tie GayBINGO which I will be writing about this week. #CatchingUp in #SpringSocialSeason

Mike Jerrick Returns To Fox, Hang with Kevin Hart, Jimmy John’s Closed, Saxbys Debuts

Mike Jerrick Returns To Fox, Hang with Kevin Hart, Jimmy John’s Closed, Saxbys

PhillyChitChat Philly Gossip is late today, in fact it’s practically tomorrow. The Social Season is in full swing, and I have been shooting back to back events as well as partnering with TGIFriday’s and Capital One both of which had events Friday and Saturday. Some good news to start off your week…

Mike Jerrick returns to Fox 29’s Good Day Monday April 3. You’ll recall Mike took a few months off to recharge, and checked into a wellness center in NC. Well he’s recharged and rearing to go. He looks great doesn’t he? On Friday he will be hosting the annual Donor’s Are Hero’s “The Party”, as he’s done for the past decade. Nick over at Philly.com has an update from this morning HERE

Jerrick

Also back tomorrow is Quincy Harris and The Q Show on Fox 29 at noon. Condolences to Q who lost his mother last week after a valiant fight against cancer.

Jerrick

Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston wrap up the Untouchable movie this week. Although they’ve spent the last month filming at Aston Pa’s movie studio Sun City, there is one last outside scene to film as well, so hopefully I’ll be able to get a few photos for you. Don’t fret though if you haven’t had your chance to see Philly born Kevin Hart in person, he has been out and about quite a lot this past month between his surprise stand up comedy routines at Helium, and Punchline; he’s also been seen eating at Ocean Prime and Del Frisco’s. It was just announced that July 6th, his birthday, will be deemed Kevin Hart Day in Philadelphia. BUT Wait there’s one more chance to see Kevin Hart, up close and personal, and that’s on May 23, 2017 for the 32nd annual Arts + Business Council Awards Celebration where the winner of the Anne d’Harnoncourt Award for Artistic Excellence 2017 is Kevin Hart

Jerrick

Speaking of winners congratulations to legendary Inquirer food writer Michael Klein, who “got woke” and turned around his unhealthy habits and started on a new path which included eating less and setting out on a modest but consistent exercise regime.  He just ran his first race on Saturday The Hot Chocolate 15k/5k Philadelphia. When I just checked the website it said every runner got a goodie bag, I thought it’d be something else but it was the running jacket Mike is wearing. (Mike Klein has in the past been my mentor, and is no doubt cringing from at least two of the run on sentences I probably have in this paragraph.)

Jerrick
Speaking of food, I was shocked when I walked by Jimmy John’s at 44 S 17th St, and saw it was CLOSED. The owner happened to be inside and told me he and the landlord were unable to agree on another lease. So bummed. There’s still a Jimmy John’s at 221 S 11th St, but he told me that was owned by someone else.

4-2-2017 10-53-02 PM (Custom)

I see there’s an orange notices on the former nail salon, 42 S. 17th St. It says a take out restaurant is coming there, and next to that a new coffee shop is to opened called Swedish Espresso Bar – Konditori, 40 S. 17th St (Klein) How the times have changed for this building of tiny shops of service to now shops of eateries, next to the former Jimmy John’s at 46 S. 17th is the relatively new MeltKraft and around the corner, in the same building is now Chestnut Street Philly Bagel.

4-2-2017 11-15-25 PM (Custom)

Saxbys has a new logo4-2-2017 11-15-45 PM (Custom)
and will be adding it to all their storefronts

Jerrick

Hate Has No Home Here is causing quite a stir in the SNJ burbs

Jerrick
as is this “Thin Blue Line” going down Merchant Street in Audubon. Seems it’s not up to state code. I kinda like it.

JerrickIt  looks like Smart Street Healthy Kitchen & Juice Bar is on the verge of opening at 38 S. 19th St., and they’re hiring.  See you Thursday for more PhillyChitChat Gossip

Capital One #BankingReimagined at Dilworth Park Today. I Went Yesterday….

Capital One launched a ten city #BankingReimagined tour earlier this year. Philadelphia is the next to the last stop (they’re there today until 6PM), but arrived on an important weekend, Dilworth Park’s Spring Awakening Weekend. The fountains are on again, the cafe is open and spring programing starts.

Dilworth

Saturday, April 1

The Air Grille, operated by Brûlée Catering, will open alongside Dilworth Park Café with a menu of grilled foods, burgers, fries, sandwiches and salads. The Air Grille will serve lunch this spring, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Schedule this week includes:

Tuesday, April 4

Noon: Take a moment to breathe, relax and quiet your mind while building up muscle strength and balance with yoga. Bring your own mat.
6:00 p.m.: Challenge your routine with the high-intensity approach of a boot camp class.

Wednesday, April 5
1:00 p.m
.: Silver Sneakers makes fitness fun for boomers and beyond with exercises designed to increase muscle strength and range of movement for seniors.
6:30 p.m.: City Fit Girls Running Club, an all-levels running and fitness community for women, meets near the information center.

Thursday, April 6
6:00 p.m
.: Get your body going with Zumba, an all-out, super calorie-burning dance party set to Latin and pop music.

HD1_2033 (Custom)

I headed over about 1PM to walk through the 20 minute, interactive session in order to help uncover the financial behaviors that best match my value system, and help my understand the role personal fiances play in enhancing my life.

HD1_2029 (Custom)

it was a crowded, but the lines ran smoothly

Dilworth

especially listening to tunes by DJ Adrian Hardy

Dilworth

First you fill out a digital form, with topics related to money and your long-term goals. Taking the mystery out of savings, and really engaging you on what is important for your money. I liked it.

4-2-2017 10-59-18 AM (Custom)
I like thinking long term, when I finished college I really never thought about long term goals, even though I had just finished going to school for a lifetime career.

Dilworth

Then I headed to the 2nd part of the tour and climbed the state-of-the-art, 54-foot trailer housing a smart, personalized and digital experience open to the public, including:

  • Touchscreens that allow you to prioritize personal values and goals, demonstrating how your outlook shapes the way you view money.
  • An augmented reality experience with 3-D holograms in real space and time that brings your financial goals to life. Video selfie booths where you can record a message to your future self as a reminder of your money goals.

HD1_1990 (Custom)
There was a giant touch screen where I swiped images left or right to answer Yes/No questions. It was like playing a game, but it was actually helping me prioritize my financial goals. After answering questions, not surprisingly I ended with a card that said improving my business was my top consideration.

HD1_2008 (Custom)
I really enjoyed the interactive displays and I got to use this the HoloLens virtual reality headset. It was my first experience using virtual reality headsets and was really neat. Technology is so fascinating especially helping us see things we normally don’t experience.

Dilworth

There were alot of Capital One ambassadors on hand to help

Dilworth

The tour ended with me recording a video on my future financial goals, which will be sent to me in the future. In the meantime I can set up a time to meet with  Capital One to meet with their free Money Coaches although you could just walk into one of their cafes to use the service as well.

Dilworth

At the end of the tour there were free snacks and coffee to enjoy

HD1_1996 (Custom)
and swag to take home.

Capital One’s core beliefs: Personal finance doesn’t need to be stressful. Both the tour and the Capital One Cafés hope to make that goal a reality.

Our Capital One Cafe is located at 17th and Walnut. I wrote about it earlier in the week.
http://www.phillychitchat.com/2017/03/capital.html

At the Cafe

  • ATMs are free for everyone, not just Capital One customers
  • There’s a nice meeting space/conference room available for free for local non-profits
  • Interactive touch-screens throughout the café provide local info and fun interactive financial content
  • You can pay your credit card bill here, open new accounts, work with your Capital One 360 account and more
  • They even offer 3 completely free “Money Coaching ” sessions with a Certified Life Coach

The New Capital One Café and The #BankingReimagined Tour Comes to Philly

Hello Thursday. Hope everyone is having a great week. Finally today the sun is scheduled to shine. Last year you’ll recall I broke the news that Capital One Café was moving across the street from the south side of 17th and Walnut, to a larger space on the north side of 17th and Walnut Streets at the Latham (source) The time has come, the new Capital One Café has opened and they are redesigning the banking experience.

3-28-2017 1-19-52 PM (Custom)

We’ve been lucky enough to have Capital One Café for quite a few years across the street from the current one, but the new location brings with it additional excitement with Capital One’s Banking Reimagined which helps people understands their finances and the beneficial services which Capital One provides in an inviting space where you can go to get answers to your financial questions, recharge your devices, enjoy free wifi or simply connect with people.

Capital

I’ve already had two meetings there since they’ve opened.

Capital

There’s also a coffee bar serving Peet’s Coffee and treats from Philadelphia Bakery Merchants, High Point Cafe, York Street Market, and Bakeshop on 20th.

3-28-2017 1-19-14 PM (Custom)The pastries, sandwiches and snack boxes are reasonably priced (I had the fruit and cheese snack box it was $3.78) , and Capital One card customers get 50 percent off coffee and tea.

3-28-2017 1-16-35 PM (Custom)

There are nooks with seating, as well as plenty of tables on both levels. great Peet’s coffee, pastries, lunch items, products and banking services.

Capital
There are demo bars to learn digital tools for banking. As well as screens where you can learn banking, and financial services.
3-29-2017 2-17-42 AM (Custom) Capital One Café Coach Jimmy shows me how to use the digital tools which are mounted on the wall.  The interactive screens, designed by the same company as the Smithsonian, each of which features interactive quizzes and content built around financial education.

Capital
Coach Jimmy also gave me a tour of all the amenities Capital One Café offers, like private meeting rooms, and conference rooms, which both can be used for non-profits free of charge; there were also private meeting offices available for clients to interact privately with ambassadors about the best solution for their financial goals. Capital

Did I mention the new cafe is two floors, and the 2nd floor looks down onto the first floor, and guests can enjoy people watching at it’s best as they look through the two level windows that look out onto Walnut Street

Capital
There are four ATM’s which allow you to take out any denomination of money. If you need $12, you can take out $12, which is great cause the ATM’s these days usually only dispense $20s. You can also make deposits, and transfer funds between accounts at the ATM’s. The other two ATM’s can be accessed from the street 24hrs a day. All the ATM’s are free of charge whether you have a Capital One card, or another banks debit card.

Capital

In addition to everything else, this year Capital One will offer free workshops and sessions with a money coach. The  Money Workshops, are a series of complimentary 1-2 hour long sessions at the Capital One Cafes on topics like “How to Talk Money With Your Honey”, “How to Make Your Golden Years Shine Bright”, “Wise Wedding Planning” and more!  The Money Coach works with you to help you align your values, beliefs, goals, and spending to move toward what you want in life.

Capital

The workshops range in topics from planning for your wedding to preparing for your golden years and everything in between. You can visit Capitalone.com/cafes to see which workshops are available and get all the info about attending.

Capital

Philadelphia-based artist Paul Carpenter might be considered a “jack of all trades.” After graduating from the University of Delaware, Carpenter pursued his interest in a variety of different mediums—painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design and digital arts—to make himself more hirable in the commercial field. As a freelance artist, Carpenter didn’t have the luxury of relying on a steady paycheck to help him pay his bills, so early on he prioritized commercial commissions over personal passions. (source)

3-28-2017 1-20-10 PM (Custom)This weekend the Banking Reimagined Tour stops in Philadelphia at Dilworth Park April 1 and April 2

As part of their commitment to redesign the banking experience, Capital One’s ‘Banking Reimagined’ Tour is coming to Dilworth Park in Philadelphia on April 1st-2nd from 10:00 AM-6:00 PM. Capital One’s ‘Banking Reimagined’ Tour will provide Philadelphians a hands-on digital experience designed to get them thinking and talking about personal finance in a new and engaging way. At the centerpiece is a state-of-the-art 54-foot trailer housing a smart, personal digital experience that recognizes participants at every stage. The experience includes

  • Interactive Touchscreens that allow people to scroll through values and goals, giving them an understanding of how their outlook shapes the way they view their money
  • A cutting-edge, Augmented Reality experience that lets people interact with 3D holographic imagery in real space and time, bringing their financial goals to life

Philly Currents 5th Annual #PCpicks2017 Party at Revolutions at Penn Treaty

It’s hard to believe that Eddie Keels founded Philly Currents  FIVE YEARS AGO. I remember when I heard about this start up magazine, and really was taken aback that an entrepreneur would venture down that road of a print magazine, since the pundits were saying PRINT WAS DEAD. But here were are five years later for Philly Current’s 5th Annual #PCpicks2017 Party at Revolution

HD1_7730 (Custom)

Cover girl for the all important issue was pretty in pink Karen Hepp, of Fox 29. Over the years many of Fox 29’s personalities have graced the magazine, and many of them were there on the 5th anniversary party.

Current
Gina Gannon, Eddie Keels and Renee Patrone

Eddie Keels: This wasn’t just another issue for us – this was a labor of love, whose sole mission was to showcase the amazingness we have going on in Philly! Isn’t that PC’s whole reason for existing? Yes. But pack 100+ slices of incredible into 48 pages, and that’s a recipe for the extraordinary! // One category went a step further and featured 4 individuals that are really upping the community standard in this great city of ours. We tipped our cap to @the_brittjames, @robs10kfriends, @hidden.mickey, and @cheyennegil, as they made up one spectacular page. We love what you’re doing day in and day out! // Everyone: if you don’t have this issue in print, now’s the time. We all deserve to feel good after reading a mag. Garth Brooks in Philly, Bobby Brown In Philly and Your Chance to Meet John Oates

Happy Sunday. What a beautiful day on Saturday, the only thing missing was the sun, but hey it was 70ish.  So busy these days, we are in full swing of the Spring Social Season and my photographers and I are swamped. I am behind, but rest assure if I photographed your event it will appear this week. I have also sent photos to outlets like Biz Journal, Liberty City Press, Metro and Philly Style this week. Plus did a whole page of pixs for the May issue of Philly Mag. OK here’s some fun news.

Brooks

I love me some Garth Brooks. Thanks to the Wells Fargo Center for the invite to photograph and interview him, but I was so swamped as I said above and couldn’t make it. I did grab a few pixs off social media I thought were special So sweet Garth Brooks gave this young fan a guitar pick. Now that’s a memory. You can’t see the front but Garth is wearing a Phillies hat.  Check out Dan DeLuca’s review in Philly Inquirer Saturday online.

Brooks

Congrats are in order for Matthew MacNeal and Karyn Rochelle who got engaged Friday night at the Garth Brooks Trisha Yearwood concert.

Brooks

Another cowboy rode into town this weekend, Bobby Brown made an appearance at the Be Beautiful Expo at the Pa Convention Center.

Brooks
Seems music is behind him and he’s going into the All Natural – Real Ingredients cooking field. If anyone knows about cooking up natural ingredients it’s him

Brooks

Congrats to Jessica and Dan. I love that the baby is waving.

Brooks

Sad news for local Philly, great news for national sports site.

Road Closures and Security Measures for NFL Draft April 26 – 29 – Annotated

The exciting NFL DRAFT IS at our doorstep, no really it’s at my doorstep and it’s a month away and I’m in awe of the road closures.

NFL

Here is a comprehensive list of ROAD CLOSINGS for the event that is to bring $86 million dollars to our coffers, and 200,000 fans who when not on the Parkway will be filling our restaurants, visiting our Liberty Bell and Historic Area, and shopping our fine stores. There’s also info on how you can get around as many of the roads are closed.  (All of these measures are being done in the name of Security, and the safety of our guests.)

NFL
I’m crossing my fingers that shuttle buses from 2601 Parkway and 2401 The Philadelphian can run in the shaded red area which is marked “local access” so residents can get to work and appointments during the road closure days.

Phase 1: Think about taking SEPTA, it really is a relaxing experience and good practice for the NFL Draft when you will have to take SEPTA
Here’s their website http://www.septa.org/

Start: 4/10/17 – 12:01am
End: 5/7/17 – 11:59pm

  • Spring Garden Street westbound will close at Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • The westbound center roadway of Benjamin Franklin Parkway will maintain two lanes from 20th Street to Eakins Oval.  The left lane of Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed from East Eakins Oval to Spring Garden St. and continue to southbound Kelly Drive, where it will open up to three travel lanes.
  • The right two lanes of Eakins Oval in front of the Art Museum steps will be closed for the building of the theatre. (Traffic headaches are not as bad yet, as the closet lane to the Art Museum Steps is usually clogged with cars from tourists, so business as usual. Proceed with caution. Be on the look out for worker bees in the street though)
  • Southbound (They really should call this the INBOUND lane, cause really who knows what southbound is?) Kelly Drive will have a lane drop between 25th St. and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

NFL

Phase 2:
Start: 4/19/17 – 12:01am to 5/3/17

  • Inner or Center lanes (inbound and outbound) of Benjamin Franklin Parkway closed from Eakins Oval to 20th Street.

Fans of all teams can follow the Draft, enjoy interactive exhibits and autograph sessions with current and former players, and take pictures with the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Draft Town presented by Oikos Triple Zero, a massive, free outdoor fan festival.

Phase 3: ONE WEEK Monday Night til Monday 5AM
Basically Don’t USE  THE PARKWAY TO COMMUTE INTO or OUT OF THE CITY AT ALL if you want to maintain your sanity- Take SEPTA to WORK

Start: 4/24/17 – 7:00pm
End: 5/1/17 – 5:00am

  • Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed from 20th Street to the Art Museum.

  • Martin Luther King Drive will remain open to 24th Street.

  • Eastbound Spring Garden Street will remain open from 31st Street to 24th Street.

  • Kelly Drive will be closed at Fairmount Avenue with traffic detoured onto Fairmount Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. (TAKE SEPTA AS THIS IS A LOCAL ROAD, runs right in front of my house, and is narrow with lots of traffic backed up. You will be frustrated as hell. )

Starting at 7:00pm on Monday, April 24th, due to the closure of the outer lanes on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, traffic headed inbound (to Center City) from Spring Garden Street Bridge or Martin Luther King Drive must exit Eakins Oval on the 24th Street ramp.  Traffic headed inbound on Kelly Drive must exit Kelly Drive at Fairmount Avenue.  Those wishing to access the rear of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the north side must exit onto Fairmount Avenue, turn right on Pennsylvania Avenue and proceed SB on 25th Street onto Anne d’Harnoncourt Drive.

NFL

Public Transportation and Parking
SEPTA is a convenient, affordable way for fans to get to and from the event grounds.  The PHLCVB has secured FREE parking at the sports stadium complex for NFL Draft Experience attendees. (Hmm free parking for the fans?) From the sports stadium complex, event-goers should utilize the Broad Street Subway at AT&T Station, located at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue.  Fares can be purchased onsite, and fans are encouraged to purchase their return fare prior to departing AT&T Station.

SEPTA service changes/alerts can be found at www.septa.org.

SEPTA Customer Service can be reached at 215-580-7800 and directly on Twitter @septa_social.  For more information on SEPTA and NJ Transit routes and schedules during the NFL Draft Experience, visit www.septa.org or call 215-580-7800, and www.njtransit.org or call 973-275-5555.

PHLASH runs 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is an easy, inexpensive way to get around.  PHLASH will re-route due to street closures during the NFL Draft Experience and will communicate any detours at http://RidePhillyPHLASH.com.

If driving into Center City is necessary, commercial off-street parking lots and garages conveniently are located near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Contact individual facilities in advance for rates and availability, or visit the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s website at www.philapark.org for a list of parking options.  The NFL Draft Experience is not affiliated with these parking facilities.

Parkway Institutions
Most of the cultural institutions on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will maintain normal hours of operation and, in some cases, even extend schedules during the NFL Draft Experience. Visitors and residents are encouraged to visit.

During the NFL Draft Experience, the west entrance (otherwise known as the official entrance, not the side of the museum with the Rocky Steps, that’s the back entrance) of the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be open and visitors may obtain access via pathways north and south of this entrance. Anne d’Harnoncourt Drive will be open at 25th Street, with access to the museum’s parking garage for museum visitors throughout the week.  The south entrance to Anne d’Harnoncourt Drive will remain accessible via the Spring Garden Street Bridge for museum visitors only.  Signage will be prominently displayed with directions.

This is truly a wonderful event to happen in Philadelphia. I’m excited it is here, and the Parkway is an amazing location to hold the NFL Draft. Living in the neighborhood that is affected by this amazing event, which is literally across the street from where I live, it would have been nice for my neighbors, especially the ones who have caregivers to know of the driving restrictions, people have to make arrangements, a few weeks notice is in adequate. With the Pope we had 3 months notice, and they had meetings with residents who live along the parkway even before they announced it to the press.
