“We want to introduce rich flavors and combinations that people in Philly would never had thought of before,” said one of the three partners, Simon Arends. “We also want to showcase who Venezuelans are and as one of the different stories that come from Latin America.”

Puyero currently seats 22 people inside, with expanded seating coming outside later in the spring. Starting this Friday, Puyero will open every day (Tuesday through Sunday) at 11:30am for lunch and stay open through dinner until 10:00pm Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, and 11:00pm on Friday and Saturday.

Puyero

DRINKS

Puyero also serves traditional sweet and tropical drinks, perfect for those hot South Street days (and nights):

* Papelon con limon – sugar cane sweetened water with lemon
* Chicha – a rice based, kind of shake with cinnamon
* Cilantro lemonade – a twist on the lemonade adding a touch of cilantro
* Tamarind juice – made from tamarind fruit with simple syrup.

Other juices and drinks will be added based on seasonal fruit selections available

Puyero

Puyero serves Venezuelan street food with a special focus on the arepa – the quintessential Venezuelan plate – and the patacon – a sandwich made from plantains. Savory sides include the Venezuelan favorite tequeños – cheese wrapped with dough which is later deep fried – which goes great with the house-made sauces. There is also the very richly flavored mandocas – a combination of corn flour, plantains and a hint of cinnamon topped with salty white cheese and cream. Plus, don’t miss the fried yucca served with guasacaca – an avocado based mix.

The green mayo is the kind of sauce that one might find when they are eating in street carts. Pink sauce sriracha, and chipotle ketchup are spicy twists on typical sauces used for traditional sides. Papaya hot sauce is sweet and spicy. “In Venezuela we like to put sauces on our food. We like to grab the container and spray all that sauce on sides (tequenos and pastelitos), arepas, empanadas, burgers, hotdogs, anything you can think of…we have four sauces right now,” said Simon.

Florida Keys Takes Over Philly With Lots of Goodness – #FlKeysCookOff

A touch of the Florida Keys hits Philly this Monday night and I’ve got the scoop on the details. The first-ever Philadelphia Florida Keys and Key West Food Influencer Cook-Off will happen at Walnut Hill College – 24 of the region’s top food bloggers, writers and radio/TV folks will get behind the stove and cook-off for a chance to win a five night six day vacation.

Walnut Hill is the gracious host for the night and their students (and our city’s future restaurant stars and chefs) are prepping and creating a fantastic menu of Florida Keys inspired dishes. Four bartenders from around the region and shaking/stirring Florida Keys-inspired cocktails.
The Florida Keys is sending up Chef Bobby Stoky , Chef, cookbook author and owner of several upper keys restaurants – is coming up as a special partnership to work with the students and be a guest judge.
_DSC1174 (Custom)
The Florida Keys and Key West Cook-off is tied into a station take-over at 30th Street. Now is the time people are planning out spring/summer vacations – plus the Florida Keys is a big wedding destination. The cook-off adds an interactive element and turns the spotlight on one of my favorite thing about the Florida Keys- the cuisine! If you get a chance, stop by 30th Street and check out the ad campaign. Sunsets, snorkeling and blue seas greet you the second you walk through the doors.

Our host Walnut Hill College is a culinary school who has had famous alumns like Fuel’s Rocco Cima, Geno’s Steaks Geno Vento, Will BYOB’s Chris Kearse and Ela’s Jason Cichonski.  For this event, our city’s future star chefs and restaurant owners are getting real world experience in working with Chef Bobby Stoky from the Keys. Stoky is owner/chef of popular restaurants in the Upper Keys including Señor Frijoles, Sundowners, Cactus Jack’s, Ballyhoo’s and Marker 88. He will work with students on prep, talk to them about his experience, answers questions and work with them in the kitchens during the competition. Students will also have their first chance to mix and mingle with food writers that they will one day work with at their own restaurants. If you haven’t been to Walnut Hill College, the bakery is open to the public and they have lunch service prepared by the students in the adorable courtyard. They also host private parties and events – and their spaces are themed and so unique. My favorite is the Great Chef’s Room.

Helping out on the decor of the project is Les Dames president (and Diner en Blanc Co-Host) Natanya DiBona so you know it’s going to be classy.

To Win A Pair of Tickets To Monday Night’s Key West Cook Off head over to

my Facebook Philly ChitChat and answer this question. What is the shell of a Key Lime Pie made out of?

Put the answer under the link for this article. Thanks

My mom lives in the Middle Keys (Marathon) and it’s glorious. She and dad chose the area about 20 years ago for its’ beauty,
fishing, outdoor activities and proximity to all the Keys, each have their own unique identity. So I’m thrilled to be working on this project, and can attest to the beauty of the Keys. I’ve been to Key West at least 25 times. They have a lot of great attractions all year long, and a spectacular Halloween week long celebration that you just have to see.

Florida Keys & Key West

Photos: Arts + Biz Council – Hosted AMY CUDDY For A Morning Seminar at the Prince

I am so uncool, I never heard of Amy Cuddy. I am in the minority cause last week when I covered another one of the fabulous Arts + Business Council of Philadelphia morning seminars, who was hosting Amy Cuddy at this was, I was taken back by the crush of the crowd of over 500 people.  Seems everyone else knew who Amy Cuddy was and her theory on “Power Posing.” There were a lot of attendees standing up straight, full power posing while networking before the doors opened for the event.

‘Social psychologist, author and Harvard Professor Amy Cuddy’s TED
Talk on “power posing” made her the #2 biggest TED speaker in the
world.   Our host for the lecture was The Arts
& Business Council of Greater Philadelphia which builds relationships
between business and the arts.

The ladies on the left had to alphabetize each of the 550 names.
Before the lecture there is usually a generous spread of donuts, bagels and breakfast cakes, along with coffee and water. Tickets are always reasonable, for this event they were $30. It’s great we have a networking event like this in Philly, I always see a lot of connecting going on.
Rachael Nave, Senior Legal Services Coordinator at Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and Jillian Rafferty, Rafferty Suburu. Mike and I just bought a Legacy Suburu from Rafferty, and their customer service was impeccable. Mike’s a great car shopper he gets three prices and then sees which dealer is able to meet our needs. #BeYourOwnAdvocate
Bari Joy – Epstein, Franklin Institute and Casey Anne Drummond, Franklin Institute
A new event on the social scene seems to be “Science After Dark.”
The next one is Tuesday, March 8, 2016 – 7:00pm to 10:00pm      Adults Evening   Get your tickets early they seem to sell out quickly. I was surprised how packed it got on a Tuesday night.
Natalie W. Nixon, Ph.D., Philadelphia University and Eileen Wainwright, NascentHub
Kristin Detterline, Editor Philly Style Magazine, Toni Leslie, Ann King Lagos and Lynn Norton all of REALM Jewelry
Vanessa Smith and Kim Fraites – Dow, Tierney – Acting CEO and COO at Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
At around 9AM the crowd filed into the Prince Theater for Amy Cuddy’s lecture.
Aubrey Fink and Kim Fink were excited to hear Amy Cuddy’s theory on power positions.
Karin Copeland,  Executive Director Arts + Business Council Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce greets the guests and explains the mission of the A+B, which is connecting arts and business in innovative strategic practices.
Amy Cuddy, her TED Talk has been viewed more than 30 million times, with “power posing,”
Her main theme was how our movement becomes
synchronized when we are present — because we are being authentic and
unscripted — and how that makes us more compelling to others, which
exudes confidence in what we are presenting. She demonstrated the many poses that help people feel more confident in various situations.
There was a panel discussion after Amy Cuddy’s lecture which included Jeff Zinser, Right Recruiting, Shelley Potente, MA, SVP and Managing Director for Client Services, The Leaders Edge/Leaders By Design, Stacy Holland, Executive Director of the Lenfest Foundation and author Cameron Conaway. The discussion was moderated by Marc Brownstein, President & CEO of Brownstein Group. They panel discussed various ways to build confidence in clients.

Afterwards there was a meet
a greet with VIP ticketholders, Amy signed her book Presence:
Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges, which was
published in December.
