ToDo: Love Your Park, Galas, Restaurant Weeks, Ben Simmons New Gal Pal

Hello PhillyChitChat readers. Sorry for the double post, but Philly is opening quickly. People are vaccinated, #vaxandrelaxed and they are eager to get out. I am being booked several times a week, which makes me so happy, and my Covid19 depression is in the rear view mirror. Also want to remind you if you are subscribed to PhillyChitChat before 2014, and receive the email around noon or 3PM, can you re subscribe at the top of the page on the left. Seems Feedburner is going away July 1. OK Let’s see what’s on the calendar of events.

Sixers standout Ben Simmons was spotted leaving Steak 48 last week by Will Helms (that dude gets so many sports snaps). Ben was celebrating the Sixers win last Wednesday with family, and his new lady love British Model Maya Jama. The two have even been spotted at a Target near Simmons house in South Jersey. He’s a regular guy, his last model squeeze Kendall Jenner got dates at Best Buy, where they bought a vacuum cleaner, Williams-Sonoma where they bought a few pots and pans and dining at Double Knot, Top Golf and the Cherry Hill Mall. Wanting to impress Maya he skipped Gran Luxe Cafe, where Bendall was spotted a few years back, and went to the very hot and happening Steak 48, where they are booked solid for weeks. I was able to get in last week and it was as always, delicious. (Ben Simmons Maya)

Our friends at Chestnut Hill Business District will launch a new monthly series, Second Saturdays this Saturday May 8, highlighting Chestnut Hill’s vibrant arts scene. Another event happening on May 8, Philadelphia’s annual Love Your Park Week kicks off. This year’s Love Your Park Week features a mix of volunteer service opportunities and celebration of Philadelphia parks, both in-person and virtual. Love Your Park Week runs citywide May 8-16, 2021. All cleanup events will be capped at 25 total participants and will follow COVID-19 health protocols per Philadelphia’s Department of Public Health. All participants are required to wear masks.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge – Free Family Fun

Nearly 1000 acres, miles and miles of trails, beautiful landscape and lots of wildlife, the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is close to Philadelphia and a wonderful day trip for the whole family, friends or just a solo trip. I like to go there as often as I can, especially now with the warmer weather.

Stop by the front desk of the Visitor Center and find helpful information, including maps, brochures, birding checklists and restrooms. Binoculars and fishing rods are available for loan, free of charge. Food is not available for purchase. Explore the Center’s exhibits to learn more about the wildlife and habitats of the refuge and the communities that support the refuge’s work. In addition, please check the public event calendar for free guided nature walks and special events all year round, both on the refuge and in Southwest Philadelphia community centers!

I like to take the more woodsy paths so i can see wildlife, but there are gravel paths you can take as well.

A much needed visit to nature!

A post shared by Michael Bowman (@jmbowman67) on

There’s a boardwalk with benches for you to enjoy nature

Remember to wear your mask as the trails can be crowded

You can ride your bike on the trails

You can go fishing, make sure you have a license

Or you can just observe nature. Don’t disturb them, or try and pet them.

Enjoy your visit. We’re so lucky to have a wildlife preserve so close to Philadelphia. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum.

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge is A Nearby Treat

At least three times a month I like to walk the trails at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge which is close by, basically near the PHL airport and perfect for my new hobby – bird watching ie photographing. They have a visitor center where you can see exhibits to introduce yourself and kids to nature, and what you might expect to see in the wildlife refuge, and it’s free.

America’s First Urban Refuge was established in 1972 for the purpose of preserving, restoring, and developing the natural area known as Tinicum Marsh and promoting environmental education. They have a calendar of events for activities, talks and nature walks. (Website) Fishing with a permit is also permitted.

There are two parking lots, one off of Lindbergh Blvd, which is paved and plentiful, and another off of Rt. 420 which is gravel and limited. Sunday I went to Rt. 420, which has great bike riding trails as well as rustic trails, and has several fishing spots. I suggest a family, or for self discovery to go to the 8601 Lindbergh Blvd., Phila entrance that is where the Visitor Center is located and is easiest to walk. There’s more people on that side.

Happy Father’s Day and Happy Pride Day Philly.

This past weekend former Philadelphia Eagles, now LA Ram’s player Connor Barwin and bride, Laura Barwin, packed up the remaining belongings from their house on Delancey Street in Rittenhouse Square
Barwin
and headed to their new Philadelphia digs in Fishtown. Connor told me earlier this year that he’d be staying in Philly, but only needed half the house as he’ll only be staying here half the time.  Fishtown seems to be on fire, earlier this year Little Pete told me if he were to open up another diner it’d be in Fishtown.

Barwin
Speaking of Eagles players, artist Perry Milou met up with QB Carson Wentz recently after the 2nd year rising star saw Perry’s work on a friends FB page.

Speaking of Rocking it – Rocky is open again after a refresher. The sidewalk has been widened, and there’s a cute tiny fence installed around the popular statute to keep tourist off the grass, and not cut through the bushes to the side steps that make their way up to the Art Museum and city view.
This shot was taken yesterday afternoon during a drizzle. I hope to see you there today for the Gary Papa Run at 630am, which for me is in 4 hrs, yikes.

Congrats Brett Rosenbloom and Tina Strausser

Barwin

Congrats to former G Lounge GM, and now Owner/Chef at Masters Bar & Restaurant Waylon Nelson, and Francesca DiDomenico-Nelson on their upcoming baby boy.

Thinking of you today Tara Lessard, longtime photographer of LGTBQ events, and everyday as you battle stage 4 ovarian cancer.

Congrats ladies, and Happy Pride Day Barwin
I saw this Saturday , amazing that a small country town like Woodbury, NJ could have rainbow flags on poles, stating Everyone is Welcome.

As many of you know I attended my uncle’s funeral on Friday. My Aunt Mary addressed the crowd at the luncheon and said love one another, tell the people who are in your life that they’re important, and when you are out in public, and you pass people by, strangers you don’t know, smile. A smile, a kind word and acknowledgment goes a long way. You never know how your day or their day is going to end. It’ll make a difference in both your days and a smile says so much.

Fashion Plate of the week
I spotted this guy on Chestnut Street on June 14 – Flag Day.
He wins the day, the week and every holiday this year in the best USA Pride.

Speaking of Pride and Flags….

I hope to see you at Pride today, smiling and waving whichever flag you feel represents you best:

bear flag, leather flag, Transsexual Flag, the black and brown rainbow flag
