A Sneak Peak at Post-Apocalyptic Restaurant Mad Rex

A Sneak Peak at Post-Apocalyptic Restaurant Mad Rex
sneak

Hello Thursday. Sorry about missing yesterday’s post, I have been so busy shooting client parties which I place in the media, I havent been able to keep up on chitchat. I’m off next week for about 4 days and will catch up. Also I’ve decided to move my “gossip column” to Friday.

Sneak

The murals and menus at Mad Rex were designed by local artist Alloyius Mcilwaine

That way I can drop some fresh gossip during my Friday morning segment on WOGL during the Morning Buzz in the 8AM hour. Then you guys can check out PCC at 9AM for all the gossip. This week I’ll be chatting about M Night’s Glass movie, as well as other celebrity sightings in the City. OK Let’s check out the new Post-Apocalyptic Restaurant Mad Rex located in Fishtown, next to the Fillmore. That area is blowing up.

HD1_8084 (Custom)
I’ve been at Mad Rex twice now once for a food tasting a few Sunday’s ago and I photographed the VIP Media party the other night.

HD1_8114 (Custom)
I thought my tasting at Mad Rex, the first post-apocalyptic theme restaurant, would be bar food at best as the investment would have been made in acquiring all the props to create the restaurant. I was wrong. The food was delicious, better than non themed, celebrity chef driven restaurants.  Above is definitely my favorite dish where customers are able to cook their own meals (chicken, salmon or beef) at their table on 700-degree slab of rock. We also ordered asparagus and broccoli for the table. So tasty.

Check
During the opening night party they had a buffet of salads that they serve:

Pear and endive salad $10 Bosc Pears, candied walnuts, manchego, pomegranate vinaigrette
Rock grilled caesar salad $10 wedge of char grilled romaine, parmesan croutons, housemade caesar ( add chicken $5)
Rock charred octopus and fennel $11 grilled on lava rock, balsamic reduction, panzanella salad in a citrus vinaigrette
Sea green salad $11 Japanese seaweed, kale (the best kale I ever had, not the small green crinkly kind), roasted ginger garlic carrots in a buttermilk vinaigrette  Quinoa salad $10 cucumbers, fresh basil, tomatoes, and shallots in a citrus vinaigrette

HD1_8144 (Custom)
Then there was this out of the world ice cream mixed in a Himalayan Salt Rocks Bowl served with toppings du jour. So good. Over time the bowls will shrink as the salt gets mixed into the ice cream.

Mad Rex features a multitude of amusements with a post-apocalyptic twist: virtual reality gaming, dining and live entertainment including a DJ and a late night bar menu.

Eastern State’s Terror Behind the Walls Is Better Than Ever

Saturday night was the annual Eastern State Penitentiary’s Terror Behind the Wall Media/Sponsor/Friends party. I’ve been attending for the past 7 years, and it’s always a fun time especially because we get to preview the popular haunted prison. Believe me it’s haunted, whether you’re experiencing the prison at night or during the day.

DSC_0003 (Custom)
There was good line already formed at the Pennitentiary when Mike and I arrived around 9PM.

Eastern
Mike and I opted wearing the glow in the dark necklace, which allows the ghouls and ghosts to touch us. This year was full on touching and jumping out, and I think it’s a much better experience with the glow necklace. Another actionable event, they will take you out of line and you’ll get your own private hell experience, like being locked in a room or sliding down into a pit of soft balls while wearing 3d glasses. I don’t want to spoil it, but to get out of the pit, you’d better not be claustrophobic.
Even if you don’t wear the necklace, like moi last year, there are still moments of fright worth every penny you paid to walk through the Pennitentiary.
DSC_0024 (Custom)
I know I always say it was the best year of scares at Terror Behind The Walls, but this year was exceptional. They changed up the tour a bit, added the “Blood Yard”, lots of fun experiences, and at the end you can hang out with your friends in The Yard, where you can grab a bite to eat, drink and be scary. At any moment the ghoul guards could break out in the Monster Mash or Thriller you. Check out the calendar for the various price levels to scare up some savings. TICKET AND INFO HERE

After experiencing Terror Behind the Walls, you can visit The Speakeasy at Al Capone’s cell with surprising adventures, and a complimentary cocktail, Yards beer, or Coca-Cola soft drink. Tickets available exclusively online. Buy now!

Eastern
After hanging out at the Speakeasy, Mike and I headed to the Media Party, which is always an adventure to find walking through a series of passageways, and maze like dark hallways, even crossing paths with scared folks in the middle of their Terror Behind the Walls experience.

Eastern
But we finally found it, and it was spectacular. The weather was amazing, and the crowd was double what I experienced in the past. This year so many people were in costume, it really enhanced the experience.

Eastern

I was dressed as a guy that just attended an epic wedding at the Academy of Music. Check out those photos on Philly Style and Philly Chit Chat tomorrow.

Eastern
I am always stumped on choices when all Hallow’s Eve comes around, but attending a Halloween Party in September gives me adequate time to think about ideas.

Eastern
These are a few of the folks you’ll run into roaming the halls of the prison

Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson and Parliament Cafe Coming to Philly

Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson and Parliament Cafe Coming to Philly

Happy Friday, and an easy fast for Yom Kippur for my Jewish friends. So many celebrity sightings this week with M. Night Shyamalan Glass now in rehearsals and getting ready to film next week. The guys seem to be out and about everywhere in the Rittenhouse Square area, mostly grabbing dinner in the evening. That won’t be happening next week as their film shoots are always schedule during the dark hours.

Parliament
Bruce has been spotted at the Irish Pub, Parc, and D’Angelo’s , but he’s gotten shopping in as well. On Wednesday he was spotted in CVS at 19th and Chestnut. He was waiting in line with the other customers, I guess they don’t like the self check out as I do, anyway, being recognized wasn’t a problem as he was friendly with everyone and posed for photos. bruce wills Philly Run (Custom) (2)

The next day our action hero was out shopping again this time at Philly Runner at 16th and Chestnut, where he bought a few pairs of sneakers.

Parliament
Samuel L Jackson, who is also in town for Glass, was spotted on Sunday at Parc, 18th and Locust for brunch, then Monday at Jane G’s (above) at 20th & Chestnut, then Davio’s 18th and Chestnut and finally at the new Indian restaurant at 19th & Chestnut Veda. Seems like Jackson is following the MO of staying within a comfort zone. By the end of the 7 weeks filming he’ll probably hit all the hot spots in Rittenhouse Square.

Congrats to Philly born Brea Bee, who played Bradley Cooper’s wife in Silver Lining Playbook, and now can be seen as a regular on General Hospital.

In other exciting news rumor has it that popular New York based Parliament Espresso and Coffee Bar is slated to open later this year in the Graham Building, at 30 South 15th St.

AMC Theaters to Fashion District Philadelphia

MSC Retail Welcomes AMC Theaters to Fashion District Philadelphia

Retail

PHILADELPHIA, September 26, 2017MSC Retail announced today three lease transactions with AMC Theatres (AMC), a multiplex chain founded in 1920 with roughly 1,000 theatres and 11,000 screens worldwide in the Philadelphia area; the one we’re all excited about is the one happening in Center City.
AMC will open a 36,000 SF movie theater in Fashion District Philadelphia (formerly known as the Gallery at Market East and briefly, Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia) at the corner of 11th & Market Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19107. With a target opening date of mid-2019, AMC at Fashion District Philadelphia will feature eight screens on the third level of the mall in the entertainment zone.
Spanning three blocks of Market Street East, the redevelopment of Fashion District Philadelphia will offer +/- 730,000 SF of retail, dining and entertainment. Current co-occupancy includes Burlington Coat Factory, Century 21, and Tiffany’s Bakery, along with an eclectic mix of tenants yet to come. Fashion District Philadelphia is well-trafficked and conveniently connected to Reading Terminal Market, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Philadelphia’s regional rail hub. Fashion District Philadelphia is a joint venture partnership with Macerich, the third largest owner and operator of shopping centers in the U.S. headquartered in Santa Monica, CA, and Philadelphia-based, Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT).
“MSC Retail is proud to represent AMC for the last 4+ years on this endeavour and very excited to finally bring the first multiplex with all of the modern-day features, recliners, food & beverage to Center City Philadelphia,” stated MSC Retail Senior Vice President, Stanton Brown. Mr. Brown and MSC Retail have represented AMC Theatres in numerous lease transactions throughout the Delaware Valley over the past four years.
Retail
PS What’s interesting about the illustration above looks like the Fashion District center is planning on a few living spaces to rise above the new concept along Market Street. Pretty exciting what’s happening in Philadelphia.

The newly announced AMC will be going in the space formerly occupied by the Burlington Coat Factor,
9-26-2017 10-58-56 AM (Custom)
which recently moved down to 9th and Market, opening last Friday to a big fanfare.

Press Release: Burlington Stores, a leading national off-price retailer, is excited to grand open a brand new store in Philadelphia, located at 833 Market Street (9th and Market), on Friday, September 22, 2017. This is a relocation of the Burlington that was located at 11th and Market. The new store is part of the Fashion District of Philadelphia, a fresh mix of retail, hospitality and enjoyable restaurants.

To recognize its grand opening, the retailer will host its ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30AM to celebrate jobs, community, and of course, shopping.

“We are thrilled to open a new Burlington in Philadelphia and excited about our new location, bringing even more jobs to the community and providing local residents, commuters and tourists with a valued shopping experience,” says Tom Kingsbury, President, CEO and Chairman, Burlington Stores.

Ardmore Oktoberfest is the perfect example of businesses working together to create a unique experience for our residents and visitors,” added Vilardo. “This is one of Ardmore’s popular events with nearly 5,000 people attending last year. I am not certain that McCloskey’s Tavern and John Henry’s Pub knew how popular this event would become when they hosted the first Ardmore Oktoberfest in 2011.”
