all the funds raised go to
HIV/AIDS services
right here in the Greater Philadelphia region, took place last Friday at 6:30 pm on Friday, March 1, 2013, at the elegant Crystal Tea
Room. (The same night as the Flower Show Gala)

Verifying Divas (BVDs), were dressed in
glamorous drag to entertain the crowd and ensure everyone has laughs and
a great time while raising funds for HIV and AIDS. At this year’s
event, AIDS Fund will award the “Favorite Straight Person of the Year”
to former State Representative Babette Josephs. In addition, the
Founders’ Award will be presented to Michael Byrne (r) and the Ferrara
Family Volunteer Award will be presented to Afríca Jones.

Babette Josephs, represented the 182nd Legislative District of
Philadelphia from 1984 through 2012, encompassing Center City and South
Philadelphia, including the section informally known as the
“Gayborhood.” She has a long-standing reputation as a lawmaker dedicated
to supporting and advocating for LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS services. In
the late 1980s, Josephs helped create the first line item in the Pennsylvania state budget allocating $1 million for HIV/AIDS preventive education and counseling. Babette told me that this shot kinda reminded her of the long and short of politics in Pennsylvania.(with Julienne Fries -L )

Matt Beierschmitt, AIDS Fund, watches over the extensive silent auction table
Interesting the only item I photographed was this hand drawn Valerie Harper “Rhoda” item. The bidding was up to $75. I should have bid on it cause I love Valerie Harper, and have photographed her in NYC before. So sad that she’s been diagnosed with a brain tumor and only has 3 months left to live.

RAW Natural Born Artists at new Venue Lit Ultrabar! PLUS Filming in Philly – 2 Movies

For years RAW Natural Born Artists called G Lounge their home every last Thursday of the month. Now the indie arts organization for artists, by artists has moved to a new home, much bigger to really showcase their work – Lit Ultrabar! on 2nd street near Spring Garden Street.

Thursday evening they presented Discovery – Kelsey Morse looking spectacular in her body paint as she uses the new runway at Raw, the top of the bar.
Alloyius McIlwaine (r) with some of his works of art which were on display.

was pulling in a double duty as his fashions were on the runway. His sister, the gorgeous Kharisma McIlwaine in one of his designs. I have to apologize for some of these shots, it was so packed when I arrived, as I had been at two events prior, I could not get close enough to get great shots.

The new venue is able to hold triple the crowd that G Lounge was able to, and tonight the added space was needed as …

Boyd Tinsley, violinist for the Dave Matthews Band, was on hand to present his film
Faces in the Mirror with Raw hostess Maria Papadakis at the Discovery artist

 Sean Capuano Photography

Boyd Tinsley held an impromptu meet and greet and hugged nearly every fan, male and female.

Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell, Andrew Rosenthal, John Middleton, Producer at Vertigo Entertainment/Warner Bros Pictures, and Maria Papadakis. John was on cloud nine as he told me that Warner Bros has locked Liam Neeson to star in the Brad Ingelsby action film Run All Night, and they are negotiating with Jaume Collet-Sera to direct. A Philly boy, rumor has it he’s planning to start filming in his hometown in the fall. John’s current project:
Bates Motel premieres Monday, March 18th, 10 pm on A&E.

********************************************

Which reminds me, today at the First Corinthian Church in West Philly actor Clint Howard and Matthew Nadu will film a scene from “The Churchwith over a hundred local
residents being extras in the film. Actors Bill Moseley and Ashley C.
Williams
will also be on set.

The next Raw Artist event will be held April 25, as it’s now a bi monthly event. Here’s how much the drinks will set you back.

Renovating: Hotel Palomar’s Square 1682 Update & Photos

Last year I heard that the restaurant at the Kimpton’s Palomar Hotel, Square 1682, was going to be renovated. I know it’s only been opened for three years, and the food is delicious, but it wasn’t getting the crowds it deserved. Certainly not like Red Owl Tavern at the recently opened Hotel Monaco at 5th and Chestnut Streets, which I ate at last week on a Wednesday and it was packed at 9PM. (Try the pot pie and mussels)

While there I overheard people talking about the renovations at Square 1682. They had started and made drastic changes.

Before writing the PhillyChitChat piece last year I stood on the corner across the street and asked a few people if they knew of the restaurant, and what they thought of it. I also asked my friends opinions, and well I had a few opinions myself. We all agreed the bar choked off the space leading to the lounge on the first floor.

And although we loved the furniture’s cool modern look, sometimes the furniture seemed too low especially for bigger peeps like me.

We all loved the staircase leading to the 2nd floor, and the chandelier was modern and cool
Friday, after hearing that the renovations started, I checked it out.

 WOW the staircase is gone.
I never even thought that was a possibility, but what a clever idea. It opens up so much space downstairs. I hear they are going to put tables and banquette seating in this area.

This is what the upstairs looks like with the staircase gone. It’s a wall and window overlooking 17th Street.

And guess what, did they take my suggestion and move the bar. Well they are definitely moving the bar, it’s now against the wall, allowing a lot of space on the left side of the restaurant/lounge. The restaurant will still be located in the back near the open kitchen.

If you want to go to a bar and dine at Square 1682 during the renovations the action is on the 2nd floor including
a pop up bar in one of the meeting rooms. You can get there by taking the elevator to the 2nd floor.

When the work is complete, the restaurant will be entirely located on the first floor, with new furniture. The 2nd floor will now become much needed event space, and can also be used as meeting space. What a great plan, removing the staircase and moving the bar.  Can’t wait til mid Spring for everything to be ready.

Philadelphia Magazine Published Two Covers for March 2013

This month Philadelphia Magazine has two covers, both with the
same content. One with the controversial story “Being White In Philly” on the cover, which you can get on your news
stand, and in the mail if you’re a subscriber (r).

The other “Fashion” which is only available in hotel rooms. Note there’s no bar-code or price on the cover featuring M. Night Shyamalan’s beautiful wife Bhavna Vaswani on the cover.

Check out my column of the Philadelphia Flower Show’s Gala Preview event on The Scene at
The Philly Post HERE Like it and share it if you’d like.

Here’s a link to the story on the right.

(P.S. I got permission to write about the two covers after I noticed them at my office.)

PSS I appreciate PhillyMag allowing me to make a statement.
“I love Philly Mag, but am very sad about the cover story. The article doesn’t represent my views. I’m sad it hurt many of my friends feelings. One of my friends wrote me to say she’s moving, she can’t believe that a City like Philly, which wants to be progressive, would publish an article like this. She wants to raise her family in a more tolerant community.”

and continues through March 10 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center,

President Drew Becher and Abington High School student Erinmarie Byrnes,
whose school garden club is competing in the Flower Show.
Local
Idol fans, inspirational heroes, local officials and former Idol
performers will take the mic to other iconic American landmarks in
Philadelphia, including the Museum of Art and Rittenhouse Square.

The
mic will also travel  to Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Nashville, Detroit,
Chicago, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and finish in
Hollywood, just in time for the Top 10 Live performance of American Idol

cities in 13 days.
