Fun and Fascinating gifts to buy at The Museum of the American Revolution

Oddities For Sale at The Gift Shop of The Museum of the American Revolution

As you know the Museum of the American Revolution  101 S. 3rd St.  opened this week.

American

Yesterday I published highlights of the opening ceremonies. While I was at the museum I checked out the gift shop, who doesn’t like shopping. Well I found quite a few interesting gifts in there (I’m sure appropriate in their time) and here are 20 of them….

HD1_5513 (Custom)It’s a beautiful gift store, and my favorite kind – the one where you don’t have to buy a ticket to the museum to shop at, so you can run in and buy that
book, tshirt or one of the oddities I’m about to show you.
dolls (1)This isn’t odd per se,  except for the kite part. Kinda wonder why they didn’t use a slim piece of medal to make the kite fly, but that’s just me.

Betsy has never looked so good. All these dolls were around $20

Scenes from The Museum of the American Revolution Opening Ceremony

Yesterday I attended the official opening of the American Revolution Museum. I had a chance to see it earlier this month at the Opening Gala, and it’s really something else. You have to go see it. The official opening was special too.

American

The Museum of the American Revolution hosted its grand opening celebration on April 19, 2017, the 242nd anniversary of the “shot heard ‘round the world” that ignited the Revolutionary War in 1775.

American

The opening ceremony stretched across Philadelphia’s historic area, starting with a reflective and reverential tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution at Washington Square, continuing with patriotic fanfare at Independence Hall, and then concluding with the official dedication and ribbon-cutting on the Museum’s outdoor plaza at Third and Chestnut Streets.  I caught up with them at Independence Hall.

Earth

Digs
To enter the contest

2. Post a photo of your outdoor space, tag @digsliving with #digmygarden and tell us what you wish was different about your garden or what types of plants you’d love to have
4. Tag 5 friends who you’d like to invite over for cocktails in your newly planted garden
Digs Living will select a winner May 1 and notify them on Instagram.
Digs
A few fun facts about Digs Living:
Digs Living owner, Anna Prinzo has spent more than 15 years in the outdoor design/build industry, beginning Digs after many years at Laurel Hill Gardens in Chestnut Hill.
Digs is unique for their urban aesthetic. Their favorite materials are concrete, steel and wood that’s been tinged (and often charred) black. The contrast of industrial materials with organic plants elevates a space with a modern edge, but keeps things from feeling cold. The natural weathering of these materials to their eventual patina, along with the seasonality of the plant life, keep the space evolving over time.
Digs

Over the years Digs has built relationships with local tradespeople and they are proud to call them collaborators. They’re not only the best at their crafts, they also each have a story that brings invaluable insight and character to the process. Mike, Digs’ carpenter/metalworker/jack-of-all-trades, has spent years working on film and TV sets. Tony and Anthony, their father-son masonry guys, make their own wine every year from the grapes in Tony’s garden. These relationships are critical to keeping projects flowing smoothly, especially when inevitable changes pop up along the way.
Digs

This summer, Digs will debut a new public space at their workshop in Fishtown built out of shipping containers. The space will be available for event rentals and will host events such as small concerts and pop up farmers markets. Also stay tuned for the release of Digs Livings custom designed outdoor dog houses that will be available for purchase in the Fall.

What 676 Bridges Look Like Now, Parkway Developments and the Growth of Franklin Town

What 676 Bridges Look Like Now, Parkway Developments, and New Business

I hope you’re having a great day. Recently I found myself at the formerly known as the Top of The Tower, now known as Sky Philadelphia. Sky Philadelphia has a popular weekend brunch, and on the 51st floor is the popular beer garden run by Brauhaus Schmitz called SkyGarten.

HD1_3697 (Custom)

I noticed there were dozen or so stories of interest from this view, in and around the Parkway area

HD1_3735 (Custom)

These three blocks of residential sum up the growth of Franklintown.
1900 Hamilton Street, the low rises with gray roofs facing us were built in the 90s,
then in the early 00s the Tivoli Condos were built I always felt sorry for Hamilton Court losing their view. Then in this decade The Granary Apartments were built, blocking their view of the City.
bridges (Custom)What 676 looked like before the replacement bridge project. Many of the openings are now capped as you will see.

Parkway

Look how amazing the Vine Street Expressway looks now that the overpasses have been completed, or are
finishing up construction.

HD1_3688 (Custom) (2)
In front of the old family court house and the Library you can see the matching ovals which is the new Aviator Park, they’ll be new benches
as beautiful landscaped gardens. I bet the annual Book Festival will be that much better with these new parks. It’ll be interesting to see what
they’re going to do with the newly capped area (on left) across from the Franklin Institute. Maybe another green space.
ParkwayHere’s one of the last bridges being replaced the 22nd street bridge, next to Park Town.

Here’s what the NFL Draft stage looked like last Monday. They’ve progressed much further in this are with
staging since then. Parkway

Another favorite mural bites the dust.

This one was on the side of the former Children’s Crisis Treatment Center at 17th and Callowhill.

HD1_3722 (Custom)

Which has now been torn down to build a micro brewery and residential mix used according to OCF Realty
“According to public record, the City owns the property. But clearly a developer has purchased the property from the City. And wouldn’t you know it, at a PAID meeting about a year and a half ago, the City agreed that it would sell the property to Orens Brothers. At that meeting, the developers indicated that they had an LOI from Callowhill Craft Brewing for a microbrewery and possible restaurant, which would be a cool addition to the neighborhood.” (OCF)

HD1_3732 (Custom)

The gray building in the center, is the new Dalian on the Parkway apartment building, the new Whole Foods is located on the first floor
as well as a CVS and a bank. The views from the apartment building are amazing, but for some reason they’ve been slow to move rentals. Personally I think they could have had more roof top access where the pool is located. Unfortunately the space is being used for a “green roof” which is nice, but you’re not allowed to walk on it.

Parkway

In the foreground is the former Whole Foods building, which is now going to be a Target. I sure hope they are going to bring better quality merchandise than what they’re selling in Center City. Well at least they’ll have produce and other groceries for a reasonable price. You might still have to go to AC Moore for photo frames, which oddly the Target’s in Center City don’t carry.
Target, request is for an exception to allow a larger signage than  allowed. The zoning limitation allows for 16 square feet of free-standing signage; the request is  for an exception of up to 40 square feet. Though larger than allowed by zoning, the footprint of  the proposed signage is very similar to the existing sign by Whole Foods. The signage theme is  the signature and somewhat iconic red Target logo with illumination of the logo.

HD1_3724 (Custom)

The Mormon Campus is nearly done. And it so gorgeous, what a really remarkable addition to Philadelphia.
The highrise on the right is The Alexander, a residential 32-story, 490,000 square-feet apartment building where Mormon’s and non-church members can live
as long as they abide by the rules of good living dictated by the Mormon faith of no drinking, no smoking, no cursing, or consumption of caffeine.
There’s also a 12,000 retail section on the first floor of the apartment building. Retail has to abide to all the same rules, except I hear if a restaurant takes a space, the eatery can have a liquor license, no coffee though. The mall, like the one they have in Salt Lake City, was developed by a partner developer is not affiliated with the Church, so some venues will be open Sundays and serve alcohol. It’s an interesting way they go around the rules of the church.

The residential tower was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City, supported by BLT Architects in Philadelphia, the PRI spokesman said, and “inspired by Philadelphia’s strong tradition of brick-and-masonry Georgian and Federal architecture.”

HD1_3694 (Custom)

All this development couldn’t have happened without the contributions of the Rendell, Street, Nutter and Kenny administrations.
We have become that first class 24/7 City that Paul Levy has talked about for the last two decades. Thanks.

I just received this press release. Looks like Vea Fitness is have a month long workout challenge as well.

Vea Fitness Teams Up with Snap Kitchen and CORE Hydration for Month-Long Workout Challenge

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 10, 2017)  — Vea Fitness, the Philadelphia-based fitness-tracking app that rewards users for working out with monetary incentives, announces its month-long workout challenge in partnership with Snap Kitchen, CORE Hydration, and certified personal trainer Joe Pepe, beginning on April 13 and ending on May 13. Vea Fitness app users can complete the “Eat Clean, Train Mean” challenge by using the app to track a workout for at least 30 minutes, twice per week. The challenge can be completed as many times as the user pleases – the more completions, the more entries the user gets into the prize lottery. Prizes include $100 gift cards to Snap Kitchen, a CORE Hydration yoga kit and backpack by Prana, valued at $299, several workout gear packages and free healthy organic drinks from CORE.

Those interested in the challenge can download the workout-tracking app in the App Store or Google Play, open the “Eat Clean, Train Mean” Workout Challenge,” and use either Vea Fitness’ GPS tracking (run, walk, bike or hike) or Gym Check-In feature to work out for at least 30 minutes. Each time the challenge is completed, the user’s name is entered into a lottery, where Vea Fitness will randomly select 3 grand prize winners, and several other small prize winners.

“We’re taking the ‘summer bodies are built in the winter’ adage to a whole new level with the ‘Eat Clean, Train Mean’ challenge,” said Jonathan Maxim, Founder and CEO of Vea Fitness. “Studies show that the best way to motivate someone to workout is through proper incentives – rewards and social accountability. With this gym-focused challenge, we’re motivating users to push themselves a step further and truly adopt a lasting healthy lifestyle.”

While those participating in the challenge simply have to workout for 30 minutes and track their time using the app, optional 30-minute fitness plans with quick and simple gym workouts, recommended by Philadelphia-based personal trainer Joe Pepe, are available in the app as a guide throughout the challenge.

Carol Burnett surprises Seniors With A Visit, Barry Manilow Spotted, Body Shop Reopens

Carol Burnett surprises Seniors With A Visit, Barry Manilow Spotted, Congrats to Philly Ad Club’s Movers and Shakers

Oh I so regret not going to see Carol Burnett who appeared Tuesday night at the Academy of Music, I have a client shoot but still could have swung by. Definitely in the past few years the Kimmel Center has been getting the most amazing talent, doing the most extraordinary  things like just talking to the audience as Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper did last year, and now Carol Burnett just talking and answering questions. It’s great, very engaging, and personable.  I don’t have to tell you but Carol Burnett is a living legend with a heart of gold which was solidified to the residents at the Daylesford Crossing (I covered the opening a few years back)

How did this happen you might wonder, well the gals heard Carol would be in town and made a video for her inviting her to stop by, and she did. The first part of the video are memories of Carol, the last 2 minutes is a lovely song from the residents. Someone was able to get Carol’s people to see it and here are the pixs from her visit.

Carol
She taught the residents how to do the “Tarzan Yell”

CarolShe chatted with each and everyone, told stories about her life and show.

Daylesford Crossing’s founder Kelly Andress often says that she builds communities “that Carol Burnett would choose to live in.”   For Andress, Burnett is symbolic of a generation whose ‘coming of age’ was during a time of progress and empowerment, and who are now entering their senior years with vitality and purpose – not willing to ‘settle’ or compromise their lifestyles.

Carol
Then the next night, Tuesday, at the Academy of Music she put on one hell of a show.
For more on Carol’s visit to Daylesford Crossings check out Savvy Mainline which was on the scene

Carol
Carol Burnett headed back to the Rittenhouse Hotel, where Barry Manilow was also staying (here with Team Derek) He was in town as he had
an appearance at QVC earlier in the night. Hope they got to catch up.
4-12-2017 1-44-55 PM (Custom)
Head over to the Shops of Liberty Place for the Grand Re-Opening of the Body Shop, it’s gone over a full body makeover.Carol
Congrats to Ukee Washington

Carol

and Nicole Michalik for being honored at the Philly Ad Club’s Movers and Shakers Luncheon

Carol
Not much of a moving and a shaking Avoid the Parkway at all costs; Between the NFL Draft set up (which is still 14 days away), and the ongoing construction on the Parkway near 20th Street, it’s a headache. Or definitely plan extra travel time of 30 to 45 minutes

Carol
It’s a sure sign of Spring when the water is turned on at Swann Fountain; this week temperatures were in the 80s and swimming commenced as a Philadelphia tradition continues.  See you tomorrow for another great party I covered, and a wrap up of the week.
Then on Sunday, Easter Sunday for a special Philly Gossip, all new babies, engagements and weddings.
Have a great a day!!
