Jimmy Fallon, Anderson Cooper Hang Out, Engagements and Tony Orlando

Good Thursday afternoon. Time for a little gossip, out and about and happy news from our neighbors.

Fallon

Lots and lots of people on my timeline are in Fire Island this week, and they saw Anderson Cooper and Jimmy Fallon about. Former UBar bartender/model/actor Kyle who is now working in Fire Island ran into them on Madonna’s Birthday Tuesday. Jimmy looks like he’s feeling no pain. All of them could use a little sunblock

Fallon

Congrats to Ashley and Jim Magnatta. So sweet. Jim’s with opssecuritygroup.com, they’re the security company that keeps you safe at events, as well as provide executive protection. When you see the OPS guards tonight at Diner en Blanc. Give them a cheery hello.

Fallon

Congrats to these two, what a gorgeous locationFallon

If you check out today’s earlier PCC entry, you’d see I went to the Atlantic City Air Show, as did Bob Schiers, who represents Cabot Creamery, he saw Tony Orlando at the air show. No word on where Dawn was. But guess what, Tony looks the same as he did when he did the variety show back in the 70s. Fallon

Speaking of Cabot Creamery, I love their cheese and seems like Marilyn Russell does too. Their cheese is rich, and tasty. I really do like it, especially on crackers.8-17-2016 10-14-26 PM (Custom) Fallon

Atlantic City Air Show, and a few Lightning Shots from Ventnor, NJ

Welcome back to Philly, me. Good Thursday morning. I just got back from spending 4 days at the shore, it was lovely. I stayed at my sisters house for the first half, then met up with Mike and stayed at our friends Lynsie & Evan Solomon’s Ventnor condo in the sky. We caught the air show and a great lightning storm.

Air Show

This storm was in Philly and never came closer than 45 miles to the shore. I have seen the amazing shots others have taken in Philly that night of the very violent storm. Imagine this is what I got 60 miles away.

Philly Zoo Summer Ale Fest Plus The Watering Hole Beer Garden

Philly Zoo Summer Ale Fest Plus The Watering Hole Beer Garden

Once-a-year, the Philadelphia Zoo opens its gates after-hours for an adults-only celebration featuring local beer, live music and delicious food. Mike and I headed to the Zoo on July 16th, his birthday, and one of his favorite events in the Summer, The Philly Zoo Summer Ale Fest. A few pixs appeared on Metro Philly, but I wanted to give you more info and pixs here….

Although the zoo balloon was in all it’s glory, it’s not open at night. But it made for great photos

watering

Every year the event sells out. So as soon as they mention tickets are on sale, usually in June, go get them.

Nearly 1,000 summer ale fans lined up to get their wrist bands and sample beer mug

This year they went with a much larger cup than the ones they’ve used in the past. DSC_6704 (Custom)

But if you must, bring your own pretzel necklace

I headed straight for the new Watering Hole – beer garden-. This year the Philly Zoo began selling beer through out the zoo, and created a beer garden for folks to hang out. It’s a great date place.

There’s food

A robust menu offers a variety of 10 craft and domestic beers including, Victory Summer Love Ale, Victory Prima Pils, Victory Headwaters Ale as well as New Belgium Flat Tire, River Horse Summer, New Belgium Snapshot, Stella, Goose Island IPA and Tröegs Sunshine Pils. For guests who prefer wine, Woodbridge Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Cabernet are also available.  Beverages are served in clear, eco-friendly cups with prices ranging from $6.00 to $8.00 inclusive of taxes. Refreshing drinks, delicious light fare and an enjoyable atmosphere make this “the” spot to be this summer.

There’s bathrooms too

The Watering Hole was designed in partnership with Groundswell Design Group, creators of some of the most popular beer gardens in Philadelphia.  Entrance to The Watering Hole is included in Zoo admission; hours of operation are Friday – Sunday from 11-4pm and holidays. For more information or to purchase Zoo tickets visit www.PhiladelphiaZoo.org.

Mike and I love the Philly Zoo so much, we bought a family pass for the year. Even if we only use it a couple times, we’re glad to support the zoo. It’s more than just animals.

Theater Exile Scores Touchdown with Tommy & Me

Theater Exile Scores Touchdown with Tommy & Me

Theatre Exile now entering their 20th anniversary season and has never been hotter, last week their show “Tommy & Me” was sold out at the La Peg!  In this month’s Philly Mag they won Best of Philly, and in the last two season, produced the much-acclaimed and talked about world premiere of Rizzo about Frank Rizzo Mayor, plus they won several Barrymores last two years, etc. exile

Last Saturday I covered the Opening Night of Tommy & Me, a heart warming story of Ray Didinger’s relationship with his boyhood hero Tommy McDonald to life.

Most theater companies do not pay for their productions with ticket sales alone, there are donors, grants, season subscriptions, etc. Tickets are just part of the process. For this show, the entire production was paid for before the doors even opened by Theatre Exile‘s use of a kickstarter – this is a new and modern way to fund theater and other cultural projects. There was so much public support for this Tommy & Me, that the kickstarter goal was $35,000 and they raised over $40,000!

exile

On opening night there was a tailgate party at La Peg.

Tommy McDonald himself granted an exclusive interview with Philadelphia Magazine – here’s what he had to say – including what he thinks of the Eagles here and now:

Team USA Bejeweled Leotards Made in Philly Area, French Montana, Spotluck, bugs and lots happening this week that you need to put on your calendar

Good awesome Friday morning, welcome to another edition of Philly Gossip where I tell you the who, what, when and where that you want to know so you can tell your friends. I don’t know about you but I finally got into the Rio Olympic obsession and I watch at least 4 hrs a day, especially the evening portions. I am in LOVE with Team USA Girl Gymnastics, and those outfits are bling fashion smashing.

Team

I heard each girls wardrobe is about $70ks, including a few outfits bejeweled with Swarovski jewels. You can get similar outfits the girls wore sans the Swarovski for a much more reasonable cost ie $70 plus, and they are made by a company in the Philadelphia area GK LTD .  These are not your Nadia Comaneci (1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastics event.) leotards, I tweeted the other day. Altho TEAM USA uses the same coaches.

Team

Congrats to Simone Biles. I woke up the neighbors last night with my cheering. So amazing. Team USA Gymnastics is to this years Olympics as the Women’s Team USA Soccer Team was to the 2012 London Olympics.  Check out this interview about how the costumes are created by Kelly McKeown, executive vice president of design and corporate relations of GK Elite. TODAY 6PM: BEFORE FYE CLOSES, French Montana is going to create one last chaotic scene at the Broad Street store, during rush hour of course TODAY. Nothing will beat the time Nicki Minaj came and the lines were 4 blocks long.

Team

Equity opens in Philly TODAY at the RITZ EAST. I had the privilege to see it last month with the stars, and director of the movie on hand. It was an enjoyable thriller about Wall Street, and what people will do to get ahead. Not a new theme, but this movie really gave you a glimpse of people’s vulnerabilities, while also being ruthless. It was entertaining. I’d see it again. Although it was set in NYC, where Wall Street is located, it was filmed in Philly and fun to pick out the Philly locations. Starring Alysia Reiner (l) and Sarah Megan Thomas (r), director Meera Menon and Sharon Pinkenson, Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office. At the preview party Reiner told me that the movie is being optioned for TV, something she repeated to Entertainment TV this week.

Congrats Joanne Calabria, CBS3’s PR. Coming up next week:

#TBT We’ll Always Have Paris – PCC Turns 10 Yrs Old Next Year

Happy Birthday to my sister Tracy.

In all the DNC hoopla I forgot to mention that PhillyChitChat just turned 9 that means a whole year of #TBT posts up to the big TEN O. When I started PhillyChitChat in 2007 , I always imagined only doing it for 5 years since I was working full time as a paralegal, I had other plans, like opening up a coffee store,

BoathseCanonPan (Custom)

selling books and greeting cards or still being yelled at by attorneys to take their damn boxes to the courthouse. Paris

A lot has changed since 07/07/07 when I launched Philly Chit Chat, which was only supposed to be a hobby, an outlet for my so called useless info as dad would call it, and well I was really curious about what went on at those parties I read about.

DSC_0309 (Custom)

First let me tell you the name PhillyChitChat came after a brainstorming session with my friends Simon and Katie Curtis (c) of NYC. I wanted a blog that was about Philly events, but also about chatting about Philly, not a message board, but a pictorial chronicalization of the City and what and who I thought was interesting.  The blog PhillyGossip was for sale, but it had a hefty price of $5,000 attached to it. Philly Media bought it for Dan Gross, and well it was perfect I didn’t want to just write about gossip only anyway. I had a lot of ideas PhillyCalendar, Philly Social Diary, Philly Social Scene, Philly Scene, but then Simon came up with PhillyChitChat and I thought that was best. I did though buy all those other names, and I still own them today. On the right are my friends Greta and Alan Greenberger. This shot was taken before Michael Nutter was mayor, and Alan was still in private practice. Greta was, and still is for a few more months, City Hall’s Tour Director. I used to volunteer at City Hall for Greta before I moved to NYC in 2005 to work for 2 years, where I met the Curtis’ and eventually became a professional celebrity photographer in January 2007. This shot was taken 7/04/07

When I moved back from NYC, and even before I started PhillyChitChat.com, I had already started blogging in 2006 with my site “Confessions of a Paparazzi” ; I was living in NYC while working on a case for the Philly law firm where I had worked since 1991. It was supposed to be a short stint in NYC, but it turned into an 18 month long jaunt, and I squeezed every minute out of it. I never left for anything, I spent nearly every holiday there and Mike was great and visited a couple times a month. At first it was just to live in NYC, which was always a dream, but then i discovered the art and fun of photographing celebrities, the cult of fandom (there’s some hardcore fans ship going on, even worse today with the internet.), and I enjoyed telling stories to my co-workers via email everyday. Like Joan above who sat in front of me at work. The email list grew, until Mike suggested I do a blog, and that is how Confessions of a Paparazzi was born. I know I used the wrong tense of paparazzi, but that word had become popular through overuse by

Paris Hilton; who visited Philly to promote her perfume in February 2007. I had become friends with Phyllis Halpern, who lived in my building, who worked at Red Tettemer, who introduced me to Matt Vlahos, a young account executive there. He was trying to stage something viral, before viral was even a term, with Paris Hilton and a guy dressed as a Groundhog. i don’t even remember the circumstances. Matt wanted me to get the photo and send it to the wireservice I worked for WENN. Paris’ people were ok with the Groundhog, made the guy stand in line for the 2hrs. When Paris saw the Groundhog in line she had him thrown out. She was not going to pose with him. It was the most bizarre thing ever….

My goal in the early years was really to find out where the celebrities were in Philly. I had just come back from NYC, and I knew from reading Harriet Lessy, Michael Klein, Stu Bykofsky and Dan Gross’ columns that celebrities did stop by Philly, and they were bigger than Alycia Lane or Monica Malpass, even though I was happy when I photographed them the first time too.

Phyllis introduced me to Thom Cardwell (flower shirt). He was the developmental director of the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Great introduction cause sure enough during the film festivals there were plenty of nearly stars, stars and past star stage.

One of the first events Thom brought me to was one where Vince Fumo greets Angie Everhart at a movie screening at the Prince Theater. This is what I wrote on Confessions of a Paparazzi of the event:

After last Thursdays premiere, it was then my responsibility to “shop” the photos to the media to promote the film. OMG how exhausting was that, calling, emailing and be rejected by a dozen papers. Finally the People Paper “The Phila Daily News” saw that one of my photos told a story (after I mentioned Vince had a red thread on his wrist – a la Madonna and her Kabbalah bracelet). The greeting of Angie Everhart with Sen. Vince Fumo as co-director Sal Mazzotta looks on. One of my favorite columnist Dan Gross picks up on this photo and tells the rest of the story…

When the photo appeared in paper they cut his wrist off, even though the story was under the photo. I could have screamed. But in time these things would happen over and over again. I’ve never gotten used to editors.  **Note above where I said I had to Shop the photos. I was thinking hey that’s a great idea, I will create a wire service for local Philly photos. I did attempt to do this with my friend Chris around the same time, but it was hard to convince local media outlets that we could provide photos that would be of interest. It would be years before I was able to convince them.

It also would be a year or so before another of my shots would appear in the Daily News. The budget for the paper was smaller, as was the space.  That summer I heard Michael Klein was going to a food event of Thom Cardwell’s and I told him I could go and photograph it. I was super nervous cause I was a huge fan of his, and knew my photos would fit perfectly in his column.  Having worked in NYC as a celebrity photography/paparazzi for the past year or so, and having read his column Inqlings, I knew that he probably was tipped off to celebrity appearances before they went to eateries or retailers, or during their visit, so he could put them in the paper the next day. My hunch was right. My 30 second spiel worked and he gave me a shot. Here’s the first shot we worked on together. Barry Manilow. Here’s what appeared in Klein’s column at the time- Inqlings – 9/7/07:

Looks like he made it – for dinner. Barry Manilow, with sidekicks, arrives at the Saloon in South Philadelphia. Manilow was welcomed Friday in a room whose patrons included mayoral candidate Michael Nutter, Q102’s Diego Ramos, lawyer Jimmy Binns, auto magnate Frank Kerbeck, and nightclub owner Larry Cohen. Last night, Manilow played at the Wachovia Center. And that was the beginning of a beautiful partnership that went on for 4 years, until the end of his column 3/26/11 The best advice Michael gave me was to spread my wings, and not work for just one outlet. It was nearly unheard of to do that, but each of the outlets I have contracts with adhere to different audiences;  I work hard to adhere to their brand and they trust me to deliver the photos their readers want.

OK  each Thursday I will publish 10 shots from each year. going forward I won’t be so wordy either. We’re starting in 2007

Boyz II Men at FYE minus one. I’m going to miss FYE, sometimes they had the best acts there for meet & greets.
