The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance sorrowfully announces the passing of its president, Peggy Amsterdam

The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance sorrowfully announces the passing of its president, Peggy Amsterdam. She died peacefully at home on December 26, surrounded by family and friends. (Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds-Brown and Peggy Anderson at an event last October 2009) As president, Amsterdam established a new vision for the Cultural Alliance, focusing on arts and culture as a unifying force for the region. Among her proudest accomplishments were: preventing the elimination of Philadelphia’s cultural funding in 2004; the release of several major research reports on the cultural sector and its impact on the region, including the 2008 Portfolio and the 2009 report Research Into Action: Pathways to New Opportunities; and the launch of Engage 2020, a bold $6.3 million research and marketing initiative to double Greater Philadelphia’s cultural participation.Speaking on behalf of Amsterdam’s accomplishments, Cultural Alliance Board Chair Hal Real said, “Peggy established the Cultural Alliance as the collective voice of arts and culture for Greater Philadelphia, ensuring that the sector was an active player in advancing the region’s growth strategies. We are incredibly grateful for everything Peggy did for the Cultural Alliance, for our community, and for our region.” In 2008 Amsterdam worked with the Mayor’s office to re-establish the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy. Most recently, she led a statewide coalition to defeat a proposed “arts tax” that would have expanded the state sales tax to include cultural organizations. She was also instrumental in establishing long-term stabilization funding for the arts in the state of Delaware during her role as the Director of Delaware’s Division of the Arts in 1993. Tom Kaiden, Chief Operating Officer of the Alliance said, “Peggy’s energy, connection, and courage inspired everyone she touched. I am at a loss for words to describe our sorrow at her passing. She was a great leader, and we will humbly carry on her mission of ensuring that arts and culture remain at the core of what defines Greater Philadelphia as a region and what binds us together as a community.” Amsterdam served as a member of the Board of Americans for the Arts; a founding member of the Cultural Data Project; a member of the executive committee of the Greater Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau; a member of the Forum of Executive Women and the International Women’s Forum; and as an appointee of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to the Mayor’s Cultural Advisory Council. She was also a board member of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. She was the very first recipient of the Ray Hanley Innovation Award, presented by the United States Urban Arts Federation (USUAF) in recognition of outstanding individual contributions to arts and culture in American cities, and of the 2008 Fleisher Art Memorial Founder’s Award, presented to individuals whose commitment and effort have made a significant contribution to expanding people’s access to the arts, supporting excellence in artistic expression, and enriching Philadelphia’s cultural resources. She served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, and on the steering committee of the National Arts Education Partnership. Amsterdam was Director of the Delaware Division of the Arts from 1993- 2000 and was a founding member of the Delaware Arts Stabilization Fund. The Cultural Alliance board and staff share their heartfelt condolences with the Amsterdam family.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 30 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the the Philadelphia Theatre Company’s Suzanne Roberts Theatre, 480 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. There will be a reception to follow at 12:30 p.m. at World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations can be made to the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance.(Don’t forget to read today’s regularly scheduled entry. CHIT CHAT PHILLY – A New Weekly Gossip Info Column

Last year I tried to start a weekly Chit Chatter column, and I guess I just got to busy and dropped it. I will try again but call it Chit Chat Philly cause it’s gonna be just that chit chatter about what’s going on in Philly that wouldn’t normally fit in an entry, probably without as many pixs, maybe things I twittered as I drop a lot of info there daily (iphillychitchat) or picked up on Facebook or from other’s twitter’s (not to be confused with stories broken by other twitters).

Coming up this week in Philly, it’s New Year’s Eve. I have to laugh when people call it amateur night, or whatever. I find those people either have a serious drinking problem or are lacking in a posse to hang with on what is the party of the year no matter how you slice it.

I can understand if you are lacking the funds for some nice duds and tickets to what is usually a 5 hr open bar/buffet event which is pretty good (& did I mention the NJ Aquarium at $99 is a great deal with front rows to the fireworks.), but must you rain your negativity on everyone else? These are also the first people that will tell you how you need to do your job, or run your life. Anyway if you are not the going out type there are still plenty of restaurants, bars that are treating 12/31 like any other night, Del Frisco’s Union Trust, Amada, any Starr restaurant, Applebees, TGIFridays etc. Johnny Brenda’s New Year’s Eve Pay As U go drinks Or do like me, stay at home with a few friends, have some snacks, spirits and play board games.

MOMENTS: This week I want you to keep in your prayers two mothers. Ginger & Joan. One is battling cancer, the other a brain aneurysm. Both are angels on earth, I kid you not. Thanks.

Also Happy Birthday to Erin Elmore 1/2/09. I believe she will be 26th again this year, but of course if you want to know her real age you can check it out on her Wikipedia Page. More reality news, Erin’s sister Ashley is on the new season of ABC’s The Bachelor. There’s a nice spread in this weeks Us Magazine about the show. Peeps on the message boards have been buzzing that if she isn’t the chosen one, then she should be the next Bachelorette. Time will tell. Ck it out 1/4/10 and catch a sneak preview below. As you will see she suffers from shyness like her sister:
Erin Elmore, friend, friend and Ashley Elmore at the Chelsea Pool AC in July 09.

A few weeks back another Philly Reality Celeb from The Bachelorette Reid Rosenthal emailed me to express condolences regarding my sister Judy, who as you may know passed away from Ovarian Cancer 12/3. Thanks Reid, he’s as nice as his fans are, some of whom donating $$ to Gilda’s House in my sister’s name. I asked Reid what he’s been up to lately and he tells me he is focusing on his real estate career, plus he’s happily dating a nice women from NY. So maybe it wasn’t a meeting of the minds after all that kept him off the upcoming show.

Did you know? The Sporting Club Turns 21 on January 21, 2010 and they’re having a party to celebrate. U Must B on the Invite List To Get In.

This is why we need, and I have tried to establish a conflict calendar to avoid these things:

Frank and Priscilla Bardonaro are co-hosting a terrific event for PAWS on 1/21/10 too!! The shindig is being held at the former Real World House, which now like’s to use the moniker the formerly F.U.E.L as it’s changed it’s name to TRUST. (I guess it’s been long enough since El Vez used to be called Trust, but I would just call “RWH” as that has a celeb vibe to it.)

PAWS, tixs $50 7PM
It’s a fashion show and you get to see Fox 29 News’ Keri-Lee Halkett, John Bolaris, model Lindsay Furman, Live Nation honcho Adam Spivak and others strut their stuff. MC for the night Mike Jerrick, FOX 29 News, who’s modeling day’s are behind him.

All is not loss at the Sporting Club event starts at 6PM, PAWS at 7PM, who wants to carpool??

Pictured: Aly Green, PAWS HOSTS: Frank and Priscilla Bardonaro, Tal Jacobsen, Beth Ann Rosenbluth and Danielle Krupa at Rouge 9/25/09;

PICKS OF THE WEEK: See the New Year’s Eve Fireworks at 6PM Thursday at Penns Landing in person. Then enjoy them at midnight when your out, with friends or snuggling at midnight somewhere warm. If I wasn’t going to be home I would be at the Cashman’s party at R2L. What a view!!

Oliver!! Closes at the Walnut Street Theater 1/10/09

Lady Gaga’s CD FAME (I made a mistake and didn’t get tickets for her 1/16/10 concert at Borgata. OY!)
FUTURE: These events are also on my PhillyChitChat public calendar here, but once a week I will highlight a few of the upcoming events. It would be great if you could support these events by attending or sending them a donation:
The Lemon Ball – Alex’s Lemonade Stand
The 2010 Lemon Ball Saturday, January 9, 2010, 7pm-12am Philadelphia Marriott Downtown 1201 Market St., Philadelphia, PA * Tickets are $250 * Sponsorships are available for individuals and companies from $1,000 http://www.alexslemonade.org/special-events/lemon-ball Jordin Sparks Set To Perform At ALSF’s 4th Annual Lemon Ball!

I look forward to working with this crew as it’s near to my heart (Can I get a celebrity/Philebrity at this event? I wish there was a info book on how to do that?):

On February 6, 2010, ChemoClothes will be hosting their second annual Bowl Over Cancer event to raise money for the cancer community! This year’s event will be held at Laurel Lanes in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. Guests can register in advance to ensure a lane reservation, or at the door beginning at 12:30 p.m. the day of the event. Tickets cost $20 and include: – 3 hours of bowling – Food – Soda – Shoe rental – Alcohol specialsChit Chat Philly will appear every Monday along with a regularly scheduled event if I can stay up late enough – LOL

LAST MINUTE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN PHILADELPHIA – Lisa M Reisman Fine Gifts Rittenhouse Square

Yesterday we got out of work early and I made it a point to run by my friend Lisa Reisman’s art gallery/gift shop as I hadn’t seen her in some time. I stayed away too long as Lisa has a whole lot more of merchandise and I knew I would be there awhile checking it all out. Like these fine miniature vases or the gold plated actual leaf, that can be used as an ornament or fastened to your door knob.
Located at 1714 Rittenhouse Square Street, Tel: 215.735.2781 which is between Rittenhouse Square’s 18th Street and 17th Street and bound by Spruce & Locust. Lisa M Reisman et Cie is a quaint little store on a quaint little street in Philly. It’s across the street from the Rittenhouse B&B where Oprah likes to stay. Besides carrying fine art, jewelery (I bought my mom an exquisite piece that I know she is going to enjoy), it also includes these handy bags, purses and satchels.
Plus this is a super find, Lisa carries these necklace holders which are only $20. Perfect last minute gift. They also have frames, ANTIQUE FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS Soaps, Perfumes, Writing Material, prints, furniture and lots of knick knack to choose from. I was there for over 2 hours just taking it all in.
I also met a nice girl who follows me on Twitter (iPhillyChitChat) who tells me that every year she does most of her shopping here as they have something for everyone, at every age group. Pretty endorsing I would say. SO if you have any last minute Christmas Shopping you need to do, I would consider the Lisa M Reisman Fine Gifts.
If you stop by tell her PhillyChitChat recomended you, plus ask for a cup of coffee, which they give you freely as you browse hassle free, that’s the best part. Thanks.

Zama Restaurant Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square

I remember a couple weeks ago on Twitter @ProfilePr shot this dolphin outline and teased her followers with “guess where I am?” Well it piqued my interest, but @iPhillyChitChat was unable to guess correctly. When you stepped into Zama you are immediately transformed to a Zen oasis with it’s simple design and peaceful atmosphere. At the helm is Chef-owner Hiroyuki “Zama” Tanaka is a veteran of Pod, Morimoto, and Genji at the Ritz Carlton.I loved the stenciling of the ceiling with the aquatics, and the walls designed with a chopstick like covering. It’s bright and airy, exactly the opposite of the former occupant Loie. The tables are made to look like a brushed maple or pine, the chairs unadorned.
The food is the main attraction here, which is probably why they used acrylic chopsticks, my dinner companion & BFF Deming told me. The acrylic allows the food to retain it’s full flavor as opposed to soaking into the wood. Deming, and I have known each other since high school, but unfortunately as PhillyChitChat, and he as the architectural IT engineer for the Pew Charitable Trusts, don’t get to see each other as much as possible. Zama was the perfect place to catch up, although it was crowded, we were easily able to hear each others conversation as the wall covering allowed the absorption of sound so it wasn’t a distraction.Deming who is a serious food connoisseur explained some of the highlights of the menu to me. Don’t get me wrong, I love sushi and Asian food, but I am used to grabbing a 8 combo to-go at the corner market and I wanted an expert opinion.
In the front of the house is the Sushi Bar. It’s here where they prepare Hand Rolls Three Ways, spicy tuna, salmon avocado & yellow tail jalapeno with soy papers. $15; or U Love Veggie $18; Tuna California Roll $18; Sizzled Whitefish $16; (There is an A La Carte menu with prices mostly in the $3.50 range, but a couple are priced $4.50 – the scallop whole at $10)
Root Vegetables, Seasonable Mushroom, Fried Noodles
Deming had the Lob-Temp $17, which was out of this world siting on a bed of teriyaki-truffle. I can’t wait to go back and get it myself.
I had the Bullish ($24), which is seared Kobe on top of sesame soy wrapped sushi rice with spicy ponzu. Color me silly because I thought I should order something other than sushi to show that there are items a non-sushi person could order in case sushi wasn’t there thing, or their thing that night. I should have looked to the entree section and I would have noticed the
Black Cod Saikyoyaki $24, Pan-Seared Fish $27, the Organic Teriyaki Salmon, Bone in Pork Chop $24, chicken or the Aged NY Strip $32. By the way, my Bullish was delicious. The Kobe steak was juicy and tender. It was an interesting combination to have it rolled with rice.
There is a sampler on the menu, several combinations, more items and desert. The bill for two, with 2 glasses of wine, apps, entree & dessert was just a little over $100. The atmosphere wonderful, the company priceless. So grab a special someone, a friend or a couple and head over to the newest sushi spot Zama at 128 South 19th Street Philadelphia, PA 19103-4646

EAGLES’ DESEAN JACKSON Hosts His ESPN Radio Show from the aLoft Hotel and SALUTES COACHES to Benefit PAL

Eagles DeSean Jackson began his a radio show on Monday nights back in September from the aLoft Philadelphia Airport Hotel on 950ESPN.
The one-hour show (7 to 8 p.m.), with Harry Mayes and Brian Seltzer, airs every other week during the NFL season from the w xyz Bar in front of a live audience. This week DeSean hook up to promote the Police Athletic League and all the good that they do.

It was a night that belonged to coaches or at least the ones that braved the cold and 19 inches of snow on the ground.
Not only did was Jackson supposed to host his one-hour ESPN radio show in front of a live audience and, as always, pepper his commentary with his favorite game stories, but invited coaches and their guests will have the chance to make a difference in the lives of children by donating $10 admission fee to a worthy cause. PAL offers a large variety of sports, education, and recreational programs to all of Philadelphia’s youngsters completely free of charge.
The radio show was quite entertaining, and afterwards I expected Desean to hang out for a bit, chat with the fans, pose for pixs and do a signing. I mean the radio show plays every other week and is free, so I imagine the $10 was to get a little face time with one of their favorite players.
No Progess – Gift (I wonder if he read’s his hand. Sometimes I think he forgets it’s a gift.)
Back in College DeSean Jackson bares a tattoo that says “My Kingdom Rules,” stressing that he is the ruler of his kingdom and his destiny.
Hmm No Struggle, what does that mean? Why not a butterfly or LOVE?
And it wasn’t like it was packed, because frankly the roads weren’t perfect in the neighborhoods and it probably kept a lot of people away I suspect.
When the radio show was over, Desean took a few questions, then seemed reluctant to sign for fans. I know he’s young, as someone said defending him, but he often acts like he is so put off by having to show up at these events, it’s really disappointing to me as someone who’s a fan of seeing fan’s happy when they meet their sports hero’s. His young fans don’t know the difference, they take what he has to offer, and that’s not much.
DeSean’s mom greets the crowd, “All the babies get autographs first” which is sweet, but the event was in honor of Pop-Warner Football coaches. The items were then given to mom who passed them onto the massive bodyguard took the items to get signed. There wasn’t much interaction between the fan and Desean and I was sad to see that since sometimes this will be the only time fans get to see their football hero, who was a complete jerk.

Eric Shipon, PAL Board Member, Nina Timani, DeSean Jackson, Ruben David,PAL Board Member and Sgt. Michael Faust. I know they were excited beyond belief with this shot, just imagine how excited one of the 20 fans would have been. (8:12PM) I told PAL I would send them the picture so they can put it in their newsletter and get a little mileage out of it, so that’s something. (Postscript: I had mentioned that Desean needed a publicist, someone sent me the name of his agent. An agent is different, he brokers deals, a publicist gets Desean’s name out there off the field, then sees to it that he garners good vibes from the fans. There’s no doubt he’s a great player, it’s his personality that needs polishing. I remember last year shooting him at his welcome to philly party and he refused to take off his sunglasses, indoors. Maybe in a few years he will come back to Philly like Iverson and appreciate the fans here that root for him.)
Desean Jackson, is no Jimmy Rollin’s who I photographed earlier in the day and signed for kids and parents alike at a press conference of 300 invited guests.

Nicole Cashman surrounded by her college friends. I really did a diservice to Nicole by not getting a fashion shot as she was looking smokin’ in her mini shiney skirt.

Then it was off to Drinker’s Pub. My first time there, so much fun I can’t share the pixs with you. Later the crew went to D’Angelo’s to dance, and I begged off. Heard it was great. Happy Birthday Nicole, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

PHILADELPHIA SNOW PICTURES FROM THE BLIZZARD 2009 – SNOWADELPHIA

What a site when I went out yesterday afternoon. The cars directly in front of my building were buried.
but the folks were in front of a clearing were lucky as the wind kept all the snow off
I thought this would make a good Christmas Card as I brought the hat out to top it off, but the next day it was sunny and that picture came out better
One of my favorite shots. I love the solidarity.
The Art Museum Steps at about 4PM Saturday YIPEEEEEE
Snow boarder with antlers on. Just so much fun.
Thank You, Fairmount Park workers who cleaned off the steps for the sledders to climb w/o slipping. I called my friend Mark Focht, director of Fairmount Park to thank him personally.
In the evening I had a few parties to attend. I didn’t want to disappoint. First up, the Mark Segal Party. Foreshadowing: The Ben Franklin Parkway’s lights were out.
The clothespin. I love how he has a Santa hat on.
Old City
No parking near Mark Segal’s house. Guess I will save that scented candle for his next party. (The pictures are yellow because of the street lights and I forgot to change the setting. So it is still closer to what it really would look like if you were out)
Walnut Street at 6th
Pick up you Varga Bar Girl Calendars for $15. Shot by Christopher Gabello Studios.
Then we were going to the Twins House Anne & Stacey
Window shopping on Pine Street (Thanks to Mike for indulging me and driving me around. I egged him on since he’s always bragging, to me, that our crossover SUV can handle snowstorms and ice)
Drunk Santa People. i forgot it was the Running of the Santa’s 2009 today. Bummer, can’t wait to see those pixs.
South Street. No line at Jim’s Steaks on this Saturday night, cause it’s closed.
10th Street Pour House (This is one of my fav pixs)
City Hall, again parking, cold, manic excitement over the pictures of City Hall.
18th & Walnut; then to Marty’s but seriously what was going to change.
This guy was jumping rope near Rittenhouse Square at about 11:00PM Bummer no parking for Marty’s party. Guess he’ll have to come to my house to drink that bottle of wine I got him. at the other end of the park these folks were building a family of snowman. they were very serious about their work, bringing along tools and accessories.
I always admire others who shoot the park and come out with awesome shots. I like mine now too. (here I remembered to change the white balance setting)
Fairmount. This is probably what a lot of the Philadelphia neighborhoods looked like. but thankfully you didn’t have to go far for a drink or bite to eat as the corner bars seemed to keep regular hours

Sunday about 2PM. The East Terrace of the Philadelphia Art Museum. Great beginers hill for the kids, and young adults snowboarded. and people using cardboard boxes that are shaped like bottles
I love this new edition to Fairmount Park, and it makes a great picture.
Boathouse Row & The Water Works
Snow doesn’t stop this jogger
If you look closely you can see a few cross country skiers
Not too many people sledding in the front of the museum. I wonder why?

Nice. I see a Christmas card next year.
Snowboarder
After watching my video, check out the one that is next. It’s much cooler with some crazy antics.

SNOW EMERGENCY ROUTES IN PHILADELPHIA

PHILADELPHIA SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARED FOR 12/19/09 9:00AM MUST MOVE CARS FROM SNOW EMERGENCY STREETS; LIST www.phila.gov/streets

Managing Director to Declare Snow Emergency 9 A.M. Saturday, December 19, 2009
Streets Department Taking Action in Advance of the Storm

PHILADELPHIA – On Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Managing Director Camille C. Barnett will declare a snow emergency. All vehicles parked on Snow Emergency Routes must be moved to an alternate parking location by 9:00 a.m. Any vehicle remaining on a Snow Emergency Route during the declared Snow Emergency will be ticketed and towed. If your car is towed, call 215-686-SNOW for its location. Do NOT call 911. A list of snow emergency routes can be found at www.phila.gov/streets and is attached to this press release.

“If you must travel, please be careful and patient,” said Director Barnett.

Streets Department Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson advises residents of the Streets Department’s plans in anticipation of snowfall this weekend. Current forecasts predict 7 to 14 inches of snow accumulation on Saturday. In preparation for the snow, Streets Department crews have spent Friday applying a brine solution to city Streets. Salt crews and equipment will be deployed throughout the City to respond as the precipitation arrives. Primary and secondary streets will be cleared first, followed by hilly residential streets and other residential streets. Crews will remain on duty through the weekend to monitor roadways and to respond to problem locations and emergencies.

Streets Commissioner Tolson said, “We are urging residents to travel only when necessary. The less traffic on city streets, the more effective our plow efforts will be. SEPTA will be operating and we encourage citizens to use public transportation. We expect heavier than normal traffic this weekend for holiday shopping and the Flyers, Sixers and Eagles games. Everyone is reminded to be careful and patient as they navigate snowy streets and sidewalks,” said Streets Commissioner Tolson.

Streets Commissioner Tolson urges residents to follow these tips:

Make sure you park your car as far away from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner limit the turning radius of salting vehicles.
Apply any commercial de-icer on steps and sidewalks early to prevent residual moisture from freezing over and creating icy conditions.
Clear a sidewalk path at least 30” wide within 6 hours of the end of the storm as listed in the Philadelphia Code (10-720).
Clear snow from neighborhood sewer drains to allow melting snow to drain.
Be conscious of the environment – use de-icing salts only as much as needed. One pound of de-icer can cover 100 to 200 square feet.
De-icer should be applied as soon as a light accumulation has developed on the surface. This will break the bond between additional accumulations and the pavement surface, and will make it easier to shovel.
A final light application of a de-icer may be required after removal is completed to melt the residual snow.
Check in on elderly and disabled neighbors

In addition, the City has a declared a Code Blue to provide additional support to the homeless. If you see a homeless person in need of assistance, please call the Homeless Outreach Coordination Center at 215-232-1984.
