Happy first day it feels like fall. Lot’s happening this week, parties, festivals, Halloween happenings and celebrity sightings. Philly is Having A Moment. Interesting I heard a few people say this over the past year, and now it’s become somewhat of a slogan. Let’s hashtag that and I will feature your moments on PhillyChitChat once a month.
Kate Winslet has arrived in Philadelphia for a new HBO series “Mare of Easttown”, which films until APRIL. The show will be mostly shot in Delco, in eerie quaint towns my sources tell me. Mare is directed by UofP graduate (This morning I was at an event and one of his friends told me his connection to Philly and this is what I found): Gavin O’Connor who once held the career sacks record at the University of Pennsylvania (The Philly Voice). Mare Of Easttown stars Winslet as a small-town Pennsylvania detective whose life crumbles around her as she investigates a local murder. The cast also includes Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Cailee Spaeny and David Denman. Additional cast-mates have been added (Info). Robert Deniro‘s film with Shia Labeouf scheduled to start in November, now scheduled to start in January. Brrr. But actually much better for me, social season is slow then.
Richard E Grant on set of Dispatches from Elsewhere October 15, 2019 in Philadelphia top left two photos. Eve Lindley and Jason Segel on the set during the evening. The scene was the characters on a “date” sharing a cheese steak from both Geno’s and Pat’s. Good idea. There are 3 more weeks left for filming the AMC TV series who’s cast includes Sally Field and Andre 3000.
The last photo in this set is from the scene I mentioned on Fox 29 on Tuesday, where Octavia played by Richard E. Grant, center photo, jumps in a waiting limo and Andre3000 character jumps into the trunk. For some reason they filmed it out of sequence. I had a chance to see the Call Sheet and it is the same scene as they were trying to match up the protestors to mimic the earlier shoot.
Last weekend Jason Segel headed to the beach for the 3 day weekend. he was spotted in Cape May as well as at the Original Fudge Kitchen in Stone Harbor.
I was on Fox 29 earlier this week chitchatting about the film. It was interesting the scene they shot with Richard E. Grant will be spliced together with a scene they filmed over the summer with Field, and Andre 300. I remember watching that one as well.
Bryan Stevenson, Karan Kendrick, Tim Blake Nelson and Andrew Lanham attend The 28th Philadelphia Film Festival opening night premier of “Just Mercy” at Philadelphia Film Center on October 17, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 10 days of film for you to enjoy through 10/27.
Marie Roda from the MTV shows The Challenge and Ex on the Beach was shopping at Kin Boutique last weekend. She is pictured with the store’s owner Joey Clark and was in town for an event with other cast members at Punch Line Philly. She is wearing a tie dye a sweatsuit from Stateside that is still available at the store. Kin is located at 1014 Pine Street. (provided)

Madeline Bell, President & CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia . “The Carousel Ball is always a very special evening of celebration and gratitude,” said Madeline Bell, President and CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “It’s a night where we celebrate the power of philanthropy to support our mission of pushing the limits of possibility for today’s patients and advancing life-changing research to create a better tomorrow.”
A signature fundraiser since 1957, the Carousel Ball celebrates the many remarkable discoveries made at CHOP that have profoundly changed pediatric medicine and honors countless supporters who have helped raise critical funds to fuel the breakthroughs of tomorrow. Held on October 12 and emceed by TODAY Co-Anchor Sheinelle Jones, this year’s black-tie event welcomed nearly 900 of the region’s greatest philanthropists, corporate leaders and patient families.
As the beneficiary of the 2019 Carousel Ball, the Hospital’s Cardiac
Center is one of the world’s largest and most accomplished pediatric
heart centers, offering care for children with acquired and congenital
heart conditions from around the globe. The Center performs a high
volume of cardiothoracic surgeries, including over 500 open heart
procedures a year – and has some of the best patient outcomes in the
world. Researchers and clinicians at CHOP are making great progress in
revolutionizing treatments and improving outcomes for children with
heart disease.

The Carousel Ball has only had three event honorees in its history. This year, distinguished event honorees were Richard D. Wood, Jr. and the Wood family, the founding family of the convenience store chain, Wawa. Across generations, the Wood family and Wawa have been invaluable partners to and champions of CHOP. From Richard Wood, Sr. leading the project to move CHOP from its original South Philadelphia location to its current University City location, to creating a chair endowment to ensure the future of a health program, to providing free coffee and beverages to CHOP families and visitors on a daily basis, Wawa has helped transform the lives of countless CHOP patients and their families for more than 160 years.
Thanks to Andre Flewellen for shooting the earlier part of the event – cocktail party and beginning of the event (I was at Komen Philly Pink Tie Gala conveniently located a few blocks away so I could get to the Met for the afterparty). See more of his photos on Philly Style later today. See my photos at CBSPhilly and in a future Philly Mag Society Column either December or January. Info for this post came from the press release. The photos on ChitChat of Mr. Wood were taken of me.
Happy Outfest, no doubt Philadelphia has one of the largest in the country. I remember attending the first few years in the 1990s, when it was held on 3 blocks on Pine Street. It was always a great time. Congrats to Frannie Price, Chuck Voltz and MC Henri David and their team who have organized and executed the event for nearly 30 years.
Camac Street has become our own little Christopher Street of the 1990s, where all the gays hung out, mingle, made out and danced. It was a great time.
I had a great time hanging out with Alex Holley and Mike Jerrick as they revived the 2019 Friend of Pride, which was presented on stage by me, and Antoine Johnson, House of Talent and a long time friend of both, especially Mike Jerrick.
Happy Out Fest Philadelphia. My name is HughE Dillon, from PhillyChitChat.com I’m here to honor my friend Alex Holley from Fox 29 Good Day. I’ve been a contributor to Fox 29 for nearly a decade and have seen first hand the spectacular job the dynamite duo- Mike Jerrick and Alex Holley have done reporting stories affecting our community. AND with Alex ITS NOT JUST a cliché, SHE REALLY does have a lot of gay friends, dating all the way back to her hometown of Dallas, Texas (And BTW She’s an Eagles fan I cheered, go Eagles). She’s always been supportive in the LGBTQ community, and when an issue affecting us arises, she wants to discuss it on Good Day. She brings on the people who are at the heart of the issue to express the importance of the matter. Alex does a great job conveying the message to the general public. SHE knows the pronouns, SHE knows the language, and personally when someone once asked me how I refer to my husband do I say, husband or wife, before I even could answer, ALEX Holley explained to him, his name is Mike, and he’s Hughe’s husband. Alex Holley – A friend of Mine, A Friend of Pride. Congratulations.
Check out additional photos on CBSPhilly. I need to do my eyebrows like this person in the first photo.
Happy Sunday the 13th – Teddy Sourias and Craft Concepts Group announce the grand opening of Nightmare Before Tinsel Halloween Pop-up Bar at 116 S. 12th Street, Philadelphia. Among the ghosts that still haunt the 100+ year old former jewelry store – including the ghosts of Tinsel’s past – look for eerie ambiance, scary photo opps, witches bru cocktails, seasonal fall beers, costumed bartenders, and tons of frights and flights.

Inside the new Halloween pop-up bar, look for a room of 1,001 eyes,

Hello Thursday. PhillyWood is hot and happening, as the cool fall weather settles in. For me SOCIAL SEASON is in full, from today through 11/3 I am shooting at least 2 events a day. Also going strong since June is Dispatches From Elsewhere this week filming in Center City, plus I have updated news on the upcoming Kate Winslet HBO series and casting. Let’s get started Around Town With HughE
Tuesday Dispatches from Elsewhere filmed on Market Street in the Continental again, a location they filmed at over the summer. Wednesday and Thursday they filmed at Ocean Prime at 15th and Sansom Streets as well as in Rittenhouse Square. Look for them to film on Friday near 9th and Lombard, and then next week return to the Curtis Center Tuesday, my sources tell me. Actor Jason Segel and his girlfriend had dinner at Villa Roma on Tuesday night. Sally Field was finally spotted out, she stopped by the Whole Foods on South Street. She drove herself my friend told me. What?? Poor Sally has to navigate our potholes. Hopefully better than the Queer Eye guys, I heard they got a few flats and were none to happy. Thankfully I see the Streets Department is rolling out new streets as we speak.
Yesterday while walking through Rittenhouse Square Allied Philly’s Jesse Cute caught Sally between scenes sitting on a bench. You’ll have a chance to see Sally Field yourself at the Philadelphia Library on November 1 as she discusses her book In Pieces with Marty Moss-Coane, host of Radio Times on WHYY .
I wrote in the spring that Kate Winslet will be coming to the Philly area to film an HBO TV Series “Mare of Easttown”, Our award winning casting company Heery Loftus Casting is looking for Caucasian IDENTICAL TWIN (or Triplets) BOYS , age 11 months to 14 months, for RECURRING ROLES on the show. The show will be shooting Nov 4, 2019 through April, 2020 (Maybe Kate will head to the Wells Fargo Center to catch Celine Dion in concert on 2/26) in the PHILADELPHIA SUBURBS. PAID positions. Please send photos, parent names and phone numbers, and date of birth of the boys to: easttowncasting@gmail.com Put “TWIN BOYS” in the subject line. Hey American Horror story fans remember when I mentioned an Evan Peters was spotted at Chickie & Pete’s during an Eagles football game 2 weeks ago, now we know why, he’s in this HBO movie too. Hey gays, Jean Smart from Designing Women is also cast. Here’s the list of cast members.
Last weekend I went to the GreatPHL19 24 hr discussion event. One of the events I caught was art curator Conrad Benner’s live Streets Department podcast of Jane Golden, Mural Arts. After words I got this shot with former Eagles great Connor Barwin, who opened the night. (How lucky are we that Connor Barwin could have settled anywhere else when not on the field, but he chooses Philly cause we are a hot bed of creativity happening here.) I wasn’t there as I was shooting the Greg Wolf Fundraiser in Trenton. The next day I had hoped to go to a dedication of the new Ed Snider mural, but Mural Arts, but the morning sessions at GreatPHL19 were running behind and I really wanted to catch the Eli Kulp talk. It was powerful and exactly what I needed to hear. He talked about purpose, after tragedy, and we are all aware of the Amtrak crash which paralyzed him when he was at the height of his career. It was a story everyone needs to hear. I hope he writes a book.
Ed Snider’s Family – Provided
Saturday was the dedication for the Ed Snider Hockey Mural: Inspiring Our Youth Mural Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation will dedicate a new mural, Snider Hockey: Inspiring Our Youth. The mural features the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation and celebrates the life and legacy of its founder and the visionary behind the Philadelphia Flyers, the late Ed Snider. The design, created by artist Jared Bader, highlights how Snider Hockey builds lives and unites communities through its on-ice and off-ice initiatives, including mentorship, tutoring, life lessons, and academic support in attending and graduating college. THANK YOU FOR THE TIPS, especially my instagram follower Mark Curran who sent me this video of Philly’s heart throb Bradley Cooper and his daughter Lea Cooper at the Philadelphia Eagles game on Sunday. I think everyone fell in love just a little bit more this week with Bradley, the hot dad!! This weekend I hope to see you Sunday at the Old City Festival and OutFest. At 2PM I will be on the OutFest stage honoring my friends Mike Jerrick and Alex Holley for their friendship and support to the LGBTQ Community.
Years ago I used to do a dog / pet column on Wednesday. People asked me what happened to it, I just got lazy like a dog and stopped doing it. BUT let’s bring it back, at least once a month, especially as we approach Halloween and all the cute dogs in their costumes. Feel free to send me photos to HughE @ PhillyChitChat.com . I was scheduled to shoot this event for Philly Pr Girl and at the last minute couldn’t make it, so she kindly sent me some photos from Grand Opening: New Veterinary, Day Care, and Grooming Center in Glen Mills – Heart + Paw
Heart + Paw Introduces Future of Pet Care During Grand Opening Celebration
The future of pet care is coming to the Philadelphia area. Heart + Paw, recently named one of the best retail environments of 2019 by Fast Company, is wagging its tail into a brand new Glen Mills location on Saturday, September 28. Launching in the open-air shopping center Glen Eagle Square, this one-of-a-kind, integrated pet care center is reimagining the future of pet care by offering veterinary care, grooming and daycare all in one place for your furry, four legged family member. They consider themselves partners in pet parenthood which pet owners (and their pets) find very exciting.
The Grand Opening celebrationbeganwith a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m along with pet-friendly “green” carpet photo ops. The public (and their pets) were welcomed to join in on the fun and to explore what this cutting edge pet care center has to offer. There was hand painted watercolor pet portraits available, Catnip planting, a treat bar the dogs, tours of our space including the locally-sourced and sustainable touchpoints designed and more.
Heart + Paw creates unique service touchpoints for its clients, for example the ability to text with their vet, as well as tailoring the low-stress experience to the unique needs of cats and dogs. Cats have a feline-only waiting room and in the exam room, there are custom built cat shelves designed by the Chief Veterinary Officer so that cats can get examined where they feel most comfortable. For dogs, there are custom floor mats so that dogs can be examined side-by-side with the vet and avoid the stress of lifting them onto the table. To learn more, visit the Heart + Paw website at www.heartandpaw.com, or follow Heart + Paw on Instagram and LinkedIn.

“There has never been and never will be another you. You have a purpose – a very special gift that only you can bring to the world” a popular quote by Marie Forleo and repeated to a crowd that gathered to hear her speak last month at Karin Copeland’s CreateXChange’s 2019-2020 “The Next Big Thing” Master Class Series at 2300 Arena in South Philly.
