5 Photos I took of Sheryl Lee Ralph’s 80 Foot Shawl

Sheryl Lee Ralph and Senator Vincent Hughes Renew Their Vows in a Romantic Re-commitment Ceremony on July 30th by Rev. Dr. Donald D. Moore, Pastor of Mount Carmel Baptist Church (MCBC) at the Philadelphia Art Museum; 20 years to the day since they married in LA in a lavish Hollywood wedding in 2005.

In June Sheryl Lee Ralph hinted in a People magazine interview about their upcoming anniversary, and said she’d like to exchange vows on the Rocky Steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum ; she wanted to have the longest veil on those steps ever, which she did, as an 80 foot shawl.

She told People Magazine, she was always inspired by the quote on the Rocky statue  “It’s not how hard you hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward – that’s how winning is done.”

She stepped off the bus and began walking up the steps, meeting the Senator halfway. With a princely gesture, he reached out his hand to her, kissed her, and they ascended the rest together as Diana Ross played from the speakers “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough!” (Hair by Carla Clarkson)

Twenty-two Philadanco ballerinas carried her custom shawl—designed by Perry Meek—up all 72 steps.

The couple said their own vows, which centered on the power of love as well as community, in front of guests including Al Roker, Deborah Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania Austin Davis, and Sheryl’s sorority sisters from Delta Sigma Theta, many Philly politician’s were there including Mayor Cherelle L Parker, City Rep Jazelle Jones, Sen Anthony Williams, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Patty Jackson, Dyanna Williams Joan Myers Brown, Mack Wilds, Felicia Williams, (Event producer Hi Touch Inc. produced the event!!) Suzann Christine Henry (also sang My One and Only Love) and Newly retired Essence magazine’s Susan Taylor were among the guests who cheered and clapped when Dreamgirl Sheryl Lee Ralph and Sen Vincent Hughes reached the top of the steps. (The guest list were close friends and family.)

I’ve been a fan of Sheryl Lee Ralph since the early ’90s, when I attended the second Divas Simply Singing concert in Washington, D.C. She was one of the first entertainers to bravely use her platform to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS, and I’ll always admire her for that.

It’s been a real joy getting to know her more personally through PhillyChitChat—attending events she’s been part of here in Philadelphia, including another Divas Simply Singing concert at The Dell. When she landed the role on Abbott Elementary, she told me it felt like something special—and she was absolutely right. She is something special.

And so is he—Senator Hughes has done so much for Philadelphia and the state. Grateful for both of them!

I got these photos wearing my other hat, a paparazzo, from across the street standing on the Washington statue platform, after I was tipped off by a reader about an hour before the ceremony. So glad to be there, it was a JOY to witness. I withheld them until after Vogue online published, except for one outlet which had already gone live before the request came in. xoxo

Here’s a video I created with these and other photos.

M Night’s Servant Films, She Wore A Red Wedding Dress, Spotted NeNe Leakes & Sheryl Lee Ralph

Congratulations are in order for Walt Moura and Dana Spain who were married at their home Saturday night, in Society Hill. The bride wore red, and she looked stunning. Friendship turned to love, and now marriage. (provided)
Thanks to my anonymous tipster who was also checking in. Stay-cation anyone?

Real Housewife of Atlanta, Nene Leakes was in town Saturday night to host a show at The Met for Punch Line Philly Ladies Night Out Comedy Tour! with special guests Loni Love, Adele Givens, Sherri Shepherd, Kym Whitley & B Simone. She was spotted checking in at the Four Season’s Saturday afternoon, that job must pay well as Saturday night at the Four Season will set you back a few thousand, but the views are worth a million bucks.

Then she headed to The Met for hair and Make-up by local and international Make Up Artist Jacen Bowman, who also does Fox 29’s Alex Holley’s beautiful face.

Thursday director M Night Shyamalan along with actors Lauren Ambrose and Rupert Grint filmed a scene for the 2nd season of Servant in near Rittenhouse Square at 21st and Spruce. At the end of the day they surprised actress Lauren Ambrose with a cake for her birthday and sang Happy Birthday. If that wasn’t sweet enough, the next day, Friday M Night shot scenes in the Bellevue Hotel’s lobby as well as inside Teuscher Chocolates.

Saturday I headed to Kevin Parker and Kerry Scott’s Philly Fashion Week, which has been going on all last week at 801 Market Street. Saturday’s theme was Lov’n My Curves and kicking off the show was legendary, iconic Sheryl Lee Ralph. You know I had to go out and support Sen. Vincent Hughes‘ wife on the Philly launch of her new clothing line “DIVA” Divinely Inspired Victoriously Aware which is also the name of her DIVA foundation where she raises funds for HIV/AIDS as well as other chronical illnesses; the show did not disappoint. The shirts were available yesterday at the show, and will be available on the DIVA foundation shortly. Check back later this week and I’ll have more photos from the Lov’n My Curves at Philly Fashion Week. Have a great day, and get out and enjoy it.

Divas Simply Singing in Stunning Fashion for Charity

Saturday night, the original Dream Girl – Sheryl Lee Ralph brought her long running HIV/AIDS Charity concert to the Dell Music Center in Fairmount Park. The concert was a huge success raising awareness, and money for services in and around Philadelphia as well as to her on charitable organization100% of the proceeds from DIVAS Simply Singing! supports The DIVA Foundation’s awareness and prevention programs.

There’s no mistake about it Miss Sheryl Lee Ralph (Mrs. Sheryl Lee Ralph-Hughes) brought it the moment she hit the stage.
It was a beautiful night, and the Dell Music Center was full of people who wanted to here the DIVA’s Sing. In my Philly Mag column I bring you to the concert, the link is at the bottom of page. The all-star line-up features Faith Evans , Angela Winbush, Meli’sa
Morgan , Monifah , Candace Benson, runner-up on season 7 of BET Sunday
Best, Philly’s own Carol Riddick, Matthew Schuler , contestant on season 5 of The Voice  and Urban Guerilla Orchestra.
On Philly Chit Chat we’re just going to be mesmerized by the flawlessness of Miss Sheryl Lee Ralph

Who I fell in love with in 1993 when my friend David Powell, Dan Hrabosky and Alex Miller headed to Washington DC for the “March On Washington.” Diva’s Simply Singing was celebrating their third year raising awareness for HIV/AIDS and we went to the concert, although I vaguely recall Dan heading out for a date.
I remember that the late, great Teena Marie was also on the bill that evening as well as many other amazing talents. It left a lasting impression on me.
When the 25th Anniversary Diva’s Simply Singing announced they were coming to the Dell East I knew I had to get the word out, as well as cover it.
Sheryl Lee Ralph and her glam squad
The billing , cause and turn out didn’t disappoint. Check out the legendary Faith Evans posing for the photographers.

But the highlight of the evening had to be when Sheryl Lee Ralph surprised her husband, Senator Vincent Hughes with Pastor Campbell on stage so that they could renew their vows after 10 years of blissful marriage. To the right is his step-children, and her children – Ivy-Victoria Maurice and Etienne Maurice. Congratulations to the new newlyweds!!
