Photos: Philadelphia Social Calendar Launch Party on The Deck

In 2007 I started my blog, this blog, Philly Chit Chat and at the same time bought the URL Philadelphia Social Calendar (I bought Philly Social Calendar as well) in hopes of launching a site to make it easier to find events.

5-20-2017 10-13-20 PM

I had just returned from living in Manhattan for nearly 2 years, and they had sites like this in place. I saw Philly didn’t have sites like this, in fact the news sites were barely online up and running. This was before Twitter, FB or Instagram were really used. I think at that time Facebook was still a college communication site.  There really wasn’t too many events to photograph or calendar at the time, but I made it a point to photograph something people oriented everyday for PhillyChitChat while the idea of the social calendar took a backseat.

Launch

Over the years I was approached, or approached others on doing the Philadelphia Social Calendar, but when people realized how much work would go into it they decided it wasn’t for them. It’s not a huge money maker, it’s a service to the City.

launch

These days we have so many events, many times conflicting. Nothing was worse than last October when the Pink Tie happened the same night as Philly Fights Cancer. Two incredible organizations raising funds for cancer research and assisting those afflicted with the illness. Over the years I did have a gmail calendar on my blog, receiving between 100 to 300 views a day, but then when I revamped it last year the new site didn’t support the kind of calendar I wanted.
SocialFast forward to October 2017 and Lynsie Solomon (r) approached me and told me she and her husband Evan Solomon EFS Network, could build the kind of calendar I wanted. Then I told her I owned the name Philadelphia Social Calendar, and Philly Social Calender. We decided to go with the first name as it just seemed more complete to me than the Philly one.  It’s now up and running, so we decided to have a launch party the other day, inviting our everyday friends and a few PR peeps we work with every week. Additional photos will appear in Philly Style Magazine later today, plus there’s a great article in Metro Philly that actually tells the story better as Jennifer Logue is more concise.

Social Social
It’s a GORGEOUS DAY, head to The Deck at Moshulu at Penns Landing. It’s the hot spot for the summer. A lot of us feel it’s a great alternative to the other spots on the water as it’s laid back, chill and romantic. The views are spectacular. Photos: Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure – More Than Pink

Yesterday was the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure Race Walk/Run. I’ve been attending the walk for years, but for the past two years I’ve been donating my time to the walk, and photographing it. They’re nice enough to allow me to roam, which I love cause there’s a lot of cover. It’s not just a walk, it’s a festival ground of actives and moving experiences.  I dedicate this day in the name of my birth mom, Marie Russell, my step mom, Virginia Dillon and my mother in law, Eleanor Toub all who survived breast cancer because of the generous support of people like you.

Little Pete’s Party on May 30, Hall & Oates Tix Sale, John Tesh, Smokey Robinson, Kate Plus 8, Tigre Hill

Details on Little Pete’s Party on May 30, John Tesh, Smokey Robinson, Kate Plus 8, Tigre Hill

We made it through the rain, we kept our world protected, we made it thought the rain, we kept my point of view, welcome to less than soggy Sunday, and another edition of Philly Gossip. First of all I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Komen Mother’s Day Walk today in front of the Art Museum. The NFL Draft stage is finally down, yeah. Unfortunately William Penn is covered in scaffolding, so blah on that. Plus remember to wear your boots cause it’s going to be a muddy mess on Eakins Oval.

Pete
I saw this sign up at the Little Pete’s at the Philadelphian. After May 29th it will be the only Little Pete’s left. Pete tells me that on Tuesday May 30, 2017 from 11AM to 3PM he will be shutting down Chancellor Street next to the Little Pete’s on 17th Street and will be throwing a good old fashion Greek Party with free food, free music and a little bit of wine. Then he wants everyone to head on over to Little Pete’s at the Philadelphian for the “Event of the Century” from 5 – 9PM. I was at the last event of the century party and it was spectacular. Unfortunately after throwing all the dollar bills at the dancing Greeks, he had his bus boys sweep them up and returned them to the throwers. I was envisioning a Joey Coyle thing before the brooms came out.

Pete
Team Derek was on hand to greet John Tesh as he flew into PHL Airport on Friday night. Tesh played the Golden Nugget, Atlantic City, NJ last night.

The Moshulu’s The Deck is where you’ll want to spend your summer nights

Welcome abroad the ladies manning “the list” to the Moshulu’s “The Deck” happily said to me at Wednesday night’s sneak preview of the newly renovated ship. In the past I had been on the Moshulu for dinner, lunch and cocktail hour and found the vessel to be dated. Speaking of dated, it was the special restaurant my mom and dad loved going to for date night while I was growing up. It has a special place in my heart. After undergoing an extensive renovation, the Moshulu is ready for business. The Deck area is ready for prime time, and happy hour with it’s new coat of deep marine blue, giving it life. Ding dong the black is gone. The Deck is beautiful and appealing. I love the new furniture, tables and the landscaping is very appealing, and the food delicious. Marty Grims, and family run the Moshulu and Fearless Restaurants. Let’s see who was there…
