Photos: Tara Lessard and Friends Gather in the Intention Circle to Say F*CK Cancer

What a great day on Sunday when friends and family gathered to support and share love with Tara Lessard, who is winning the battle against Ovarian Cancer, which she was diagnosed with in the fall. You may know Tara as the talented photographer who photographs many of the events in the Philly GLBTQ community with her company Freedom G Philly, and has also photographed for this blog as well.

Over 100 people gathered in the William Way Ballroom the first sunny Sunday afternoon in the new year, harnessing their energies and focusing them on Tara Lessard (l-r Patrick Hagerty, and Tara’s parents and friend) in a room where the chairs were placed in a circle.

Spotted sharing their energies in the “intention circle” were Sen Brian Sims and Chris Bartlett, executive director of the William Way Center .

The idea of a community “Healthy Day” came from her friend, Diane Matkowski (c), who owns Freedom Massage. She wanted Tara’s friends to come and share their good energy with Tara, give her lots of hugs, and raise much needed funds for her day to day care. The Freedom Massage team including Sara and Jessica, taught the basics of massage, as well as donated free 10 minute chair massages.

There was an impressive silent auction with items, gift cards and services, which also raised funds.

Deja Lynn Alvarez, a transgender advocate with GALAEI and Mazzoni Center and filmmaker Kelly Burkhardt.

There was a lot of love and support in the room

All the tips that were thrown in the middle of the floor were donated to Tara’s fund.
Yogi Marcy Mackay has traveled around the world three times in a “bikini” with The BEACH BOYS. In her travels she has studied with some of the best
yoga instructors in the world. She chatted about  her experience
with Yoga and how it has changed her life and sense of well-being with the intention circle.
Yogi Dawn Smelser Director of Motherheart Studio in Fishtown was also on hand; she discussed her breath/meditation exercises. She has studied in India and is
a huge ICON in the wellness community.

I had to leave to shoot another event, but I found this photo that Diane Matkowski‎ took with Tara Lessard and her friends who attended the event.

Socially: Philly Locals Mourn Bowie and Its Extraordinary

We’ve read the celebrity social media tributes on David Bowie’s passing,

Now read what local Philadelphian’s are saying about it
First me. I never saw David Bowie in concert. When he was popular I was into disco/dance music and Bruce Springsteen. When the 80s rolled around Bowie made a “dance” album, called apropriately “Let’s Dance.” I love that album, which in turned turned me on to his entire body of work. I became a big Bowie fan, so when I started shooting celebrities in NYC, it was a high honor and thrill to see him and get a shot. He didn’t go out very much, maybe once or twice a year, and usually just for good friends. The shot above with wife Iman, was taken at the 2008 Annual Vanity Fair Party held during the Tribeca Film Festival. He went every year as it was a real New York City party where good friends like Graydon Carter, Robert DeNiro, Dianne von Furstenberg, Lou Reed, Tom Ford, Natasha Richardson, Kitty Carlye Hart, John McEnroe, Patty Smyth, Mike Myers  Christy Turlington and Ed Burns. I was really thrilled one night when I spotted David Bowie leaving a Tom Ford store opening party, and then Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti left shortly afterwards. Whenever I saw Bowie with Iman, he was always a perfect gentleman, he opened doors for her, walked curbside, and let her shine. He seemed much shier than his persona on stage. But always stylish, and classy. RIP David Bowie.

The 22nd Annual Hair O’ The Dog is 1/16/16 – Fav Pixs From Past Events #HOD2016

Happy Hair of The Dog Month, I can’t believe that another year has gone by so quickly and the party that kicks off the winter “social season” is upon us.

I’ve been covering Hair of The Dog for the past 7 years and it’s really evolved into a wild and crazy party, into an even more wild and crazier party. Here are some of my favorite photos from the past 4 years.

 http://hairothedog.com/tickets/
Remember the time they held it on the boat back in 2010. It snowed, and oh my g those steps between floors. Surprised no one fell overboard.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit THON- Penn State’s Dance Marathon supporting the fight against Pediatric Cancer

Most of the years it’s been held in hotels, but the past two years it’s been at The Crystal Tea Room across the street from City Hall.

It’s always a great mix of people, with varying ages, notables and folks like me.
But the most important part, you have to dress the part.

#HOD2016

Ever since the infamous dress Kate Beaver wore in 2013, the ladies have upped their games in hopes of getting the amazing press she did after this photo I took was published. She was in high demand with appearances on Preston and Steve and Fox 29 Philly to name a few.

Opening Night Photos to Celebrate Revolution Taco 2015 Walnut Street Opening

To celebrate their grand opening today,

Revolution Taco at 2015 Walnut Street

From 12-1pm and 4-6pm Revolution Taco will give away free smoked chicken tacos (one per person) as an introduction to the neighborhood and to
celebrate their first brick and mortar storefront.

Mike Sultan, and his girlfriend Angela Ficco

Carolyn Nguyen and

Alan Krawitz

This is the first
brick and mortar for all three owners, who are known for their popular
food trucks Street Food Philly, Taco Mondo and Say Cheese.

When you walk into the eatery, there’s a collection of peppers from around the world on the right hand side. I can honestly say I never saw such a collection.

I asked a few of the servers which were their favorite taco’s – Sue Krawitz said it was the smoked chicken, which is exactly what you’ll be getting today.

BTW these chips and gauc are delicious. They’re going to have to enter the guacamole contest held by MANNA this year.

Khyania – loves house made Churizo

Approximately 10 different tacos, burritos
and empanadas at launch, Sultan said, and specials to be added once they
are underway. Trio plans to grow vegetables for use in dishes.
Condiment bar to feature house-made salsas, hot sauces and toppings –
including rotating seasonal selections.

Menu will include
tortillas wrapped around fillings like pork belly, lamb shoulder,
tongue, smoked mushrooms, Korean fried chicken, fried chick pea batter
and kimchi, in both taco and burrito form.
Empanadas will include a cornmeal gluten-free version, and torta-like
sandwiches are also planned (Sultan teased a version featuring
adobo-spiced house-cured bacon with spicy chorizo cheese sauce).
Alex Holley digs into the Tongue & Cheek as Mike looks on to explain exactly what she’s eating. She was brave and actually took several bites from the cow’s tongue and pig’s cheek taco. We periscoped it in all it’s glory here
https://www.periscope.tv/w/1YqKDMnMRbvGV

Mike Adams on-air weekdays on Philadelphia’s 96.5 AMP, he’s on during the PM drive, with him is Mr Dee Jay Watts. MrD is on 96.5 AMP Radio every Sunday from 6-10PM! eJayWatts
Also spotted in the crowd was Fox 29’s Alex Holley, and Power 99’s Mina Say What. Nice to see these ladies out and about mingling with folks. Always amenable to take a photo with you.

Christopher Ricciotti and Kimmie Kocktail – What’s On Tap SNJtoday.com
Al Lee and Danielle Sievers
Jamie Shanker, corridor revitalization and business association manager Mt. Airy, USA and Tyler Goldman, poet

Jake Herman and Emily Tharp

I call these two trouble – Matt Ray and Tim Adams.
Jan Reed and Susan Kourpanidis
Krawitz launched Say Cheese Philly earlier in 2011. He met Sultan and
Nguyen the first week that Street Food Philly was open at a food truck
round-up at the Piazza in Northern Liberties. The three developed a
friendship and unofficial partnership in teaching each other various
facets of the business – from the food to the business side of running a
food truck. In 2014, the three decided to open a brick and mortar
eatery – and bring together their differing skills and styles for one
unified concept. They found a location in Rittenhouse Square and
announced Revolution Taco in spring of 2015. All mobile trucks will continue to operate once Revolution Taco is fully opened.

PhillyGossip: New Retail in Midtown Village Plus Other Relevant Fun Retail News Happening

On my way to the Little Lion Media and Friends party last night, I took a stroll through Midtown Village. Lots going on there, but most notably I spotted this new store at 1216 Walnut Street

It’s called Rikumo and it was previously located at 12th and Spring Garden. Rikumo is a finely curated housewares, and home decor from Japan.

Since the place was still in the organizational mode I only took two photos of products while I was inside, after being invited in as the owner spotted me peering through the window.

I did see a lot of sleek designed items for your kitchen, home, and bathroom as well as stationary and gifts. This is a great store for Walnut Street, and people Rittenhouse Square will make a trip below Broad to patronize the shop.

I spoke with store manager Jino Lee, who tells me he’s excited about moving the store to Center City, it’ll be much more convenient for many of his clients. In addition to selling great products that people will enjoy, he plans to host events at the new location which would include lectures, demonstrations, and workshops. He looks forward to being a part of the Center City community. Rikumo plans to open softly on Friday, with a grand opening event later in the month.

                                                   ******************************

On a sad note, I noticed Potito’s Bakery has closed it’s doors at 1315 Walnut St. They had the most delicious pastries, but I think the lunch part didn’t take off as well as they hoped.

There was a lot of competition nearby from longtime established sandwich shops, and then Wawa opened up down the street. You can still get their world famous canolli’s, Turkey Cake and other cakes at their two other locations in South Philly and Wildwood NJ.
********************************
Earlier in the year they closed their 20th and Spring Garden location, but don’t fret Ashley Michelle tells me that
Sweet Nectar Dessert Kitchen coming soon to 547 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130!
*************************************
Back in November I told you about lou lou boutique coming to Midtown Village, a store that specializes in women’s accessories. I noticed the signs were up now, plus a sign that says they’re hiring.

*****************************

The lights are on at the Hale Building. Looks like Brickstone Realty is really going to rehab the beautiful Victoria style building by architect Willis G. Hale built 1897, 51,500-square-foot building at 1326 Chestnut Street.
***************************
People really lost their cheese over the news that Mac Mart Philly’s FIRST n ONLY Mac’n Cheese Food Truck is opening a brick and mortar eatery in the Rittenhouse area. This sign was near Parc’s kitchen door on Locust Street near 18th. I hear wherever it’s going to be, it’ll be opened before March comes in like a lion. Speaking of lions, I went to the Little Lion restaurant opening party last night. I lost my cheese over Chef Sean Patrick Ciccarone’s mac & cheese, and t
he most delicious fried chicken you’ll ever have.
Look for photos on Philly Mag tomorrow.

More Photos from @PhillyMayor #PHL2016 Inauguration Day – Broad Street Walk, City Hall Parties & Block Party

Congratulations to Mayor Jim Kenney. I’ve been photographing the Mayor Kenney for the past 6 years. Even with the familiarity of our relationship, it feels different as he ascends into this prestigious, powerful position. As a society photographer, reporter, pop culture curator, it’s fun to see him go from a shy, private councilman born and raised in South Philadelphia, to when he finally got comfortable with me photographing him at events about 5 years ago (you’re notable people want to know what you’re doing I would say, [thanks to the Tamburino’s for introducing me to him at Sabrina’s wedding]) to his decision to run for mayor, to his transformation of a serious contender, (anyone can see he has a more commanding appearance these days) to the day he was sworn into the office. I remember the day after he won the primary, he came up to me as I was waiting for a bus. He said you wanna take of selfie, I would have never asked him, and I jumped at the chance. I may have been a little teary eyed, which was a surprise, but it’s really because I’m so happy for him, and for Philadelphia. Most mayors I’m sure have been brought up in Philly, but I really feel this Mayor connects with all the people, and his administration is going to pull our City together and make it even better.

It killed me not to go to the swearing in ceremony, but it was a Monday morning and Monday’s are deadline day. I got a couple columns out and jumped on a bus at 11:30PM, good thing too as the ceremony ended early and the traditional walk up Broad Street was underway. I was trying to figure out the best place to stand, as I slowly moved my way down the street, which was conveniently closed for his walk down the middle of the street.

Spotted in the crowd and posed in the middle of the street so I could get City Hall in the background, former councilman Frank DiCicco and his son Christian DiCicco. Christian and his wife Diane welcomed a baby boy Charlie in December. Congrats!
Protesters lined the street greeting the guests
Spotted Luke Butler, who was chief of staff for both former Mayor Nutter and former Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger. Tuesday in the PHL Business Journal a story broke the news that Luke landed at  Curalate as its strategy and operations manager.

Rue Landau, Esquire is the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) and the Fair Housing Commission (FHC), Jeff Guaracino,  president and CEO of Welcome America Inc and Nellie Fitzpatrick,  Director, Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs for the City of Philadelphia

 Sen Bob Casey
Mayor Jim Kenney moving briskly up Broad Street. I found the perfect spot to photograph him. He called over to me and said
HughE let’s take a selfie. What a mind blowing moment I’ll treasure.
(Thanks to the Michael Bryant, Philly Daily News for this shot. Also Jeff Fusco, and Brian Hickey captured great shots I’ll treasure.)

The press and supporters continued at a brisk pace, sadly even knocking

over this women, who was quickly picked up

She recovered and quickly checked her camera for damage. The folks to the right were not protesters but welcoming the Mayor to City Hall. They handed him flowers

Brenda Exon, cofounder of the nonprofit advocacy group Partners for Civic Pride, was on hand to give a history lesson on the Philadelphia flag as well as greet Mayor Kenney.
In the upper floors of City Hall, City Council was celebrated being sworn in
Kathryn Ott Lovell, the newly appointed Commissioner of Parks and Recreation (and Eileen Della Volle, Vice President Client Relations/ Business Development/Government Affairs) at the City Council Party. She takes over the job held by Michael DiBerardinis during the Nutter administration. At that time Nutter split the department into 3 positions, with DiBerardinis overlooking Parks & Recreation (Susan Slawson) and Fairmount Park (Mark Focht). Under Mayor Kenney it returns with just one person overlooking the department, Kathryn Ott Lovell.
Two millennials who are politically going to make a difference:
 Matthew Fontana and Gabriela Guaracao
In 2015, Philly Set Go had some great accomplishments demonstrating millennials can make a political impact. They included endorsements that made a difference as demonstrated by NEWSWORKS recognition of our endorsements, being the first organization to endorse Allan Domb for City Council At-Large‘s successful candidacy, the filing of a right-to-know request with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and working in tandem with the Center City Residents’ Association (CCRA) to defeat a Council bill that would have discriminated against college students.
In 2016, with your support, we aim to build off of this success by continuing our advocacy for all Philadelphia millennials on issues that affect us.
First up —> Our event with “America’s mayor”, Ed Rendell. Join us!

Another Landmark Nightclub Restaurant Closes in Cherry Hill as Taylor Mills Outlives Gatsby’s, Taylors, Iguanas, Milk Bar, Top Dog and Craft House & Beer Garden

First, sad face, another iconic club I partied at The Coastline is Closed. Philly.com reported that The Coastline would close in 2016, and it did this past weekend. I grew up in Cherry Hill, and it was a rite of passage that the Coastline would be the club the locals hit up when they turned of age, some of us a little bit before that too.

Sorry to see the old gal go, but glad she stuck around so long for others to enjoy the mirror balled dance floor, and delicious food.
********************************
Taylor Mills at Hair of the Dog. Tickets still available for this year’s event on 1/16
After clubbing at the Coastline, I often headed over to
Taylor Mills’ Gay Club Gatsby’s on Rt 70 next to my still favorite pizza place in the area, King of Pizza.
Gatsby’s was torn down in 1988 (I have pixs of that night, now where is my photo album?) A new Gatsby’s opened a half mile away on Cuthburt Blvd), and a new dance club/restaurant built on it’s site called Taylor’s, then Iguana and then in 1997 Milk Bar took over the 2nd floor as a more loungy club,

Then in 2000 it was renovated and became Top Dog
Still going strong I photographed
Jwowwww of Jersey Shore fame back in 2010 where 1,000 packed the place to meet her

The last reincarnation of the building was in 2014
Craft House & Beer Garden, although the place was still attracting a decent crowd before it closed, sources tell me that Taylor Mills wanted to retire and sold the place in December to Vera

Opening in a few weeks, under new ownership is Vera Bar and Grill.
They’re hiring for EVERY position, they stressed to me.
We are looking for the best of the best, to be a part of something BIG! Vera Bar & Grill, Cherry Hill’s newest upscale venue is opening Mid-January and is hiring for all positions. Please stop by and apply in person: Tues 1/5 thru Thurs 1/7 11am until 3pm.please ask for VeraThe address is2310 marlton pike westcherry hill NJ 08002
