Robing ceremony held for New Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta

Yesterday I attended the Robing of The Honorable Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta. The ceremony, held in front of a large crowd of family, fellow judges, attorneys and court employees, took place inside courtroom 653 at City Hall.
Ron Donatucci Jr invited me to cover the “Robing” of Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta because he knows I want to start covering politicians and other notable people in the City, on a social level. What a privilege it was to witness this very moving, personal achievement of Angelo Foglietta as he went through the ceremonial traditions of being robed, and ascending to the bench as a judge for Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.
Several of his good friends told stories about the Judge, and how he will uphold the values that brought him to this day. Above John J. Dougherty, Business Manager IBEW Local 98. Dougherty talked about the values and virtues of his friend, the recently elected Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta.
There’s nothing like the love of a sister, and I heard it loud and clear when Thea Foglietta-Silverstein, Esq. spoke. So elegant. At one point Thea mentioned a meeting with former US Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor, asking her what she would like people to remember her most by. O’Connor mentioned that she would like people to remember her as “a good judge”. Whether they were defendants’ litigators, jurors, other judges or witness. Thea said, in the future that is exactly what she knows people will think of her brother.
The Honorable Pamela Pryor Dembe President Judge – Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas said while introducing Developer Bart Blatstein, “I hope when he buys the Philadelphia Inquirer, he continues to carry the Dennis The Menace cartoon. (See my story yesterday about Blatstein & the Phila Inquirer.) (Social Diary commentary: Bart must be on the Tony Luke diet, he looks great.)
William P. Fedullo Elected Vice Chancellor gives his friend Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta a congratulatory hug after speaking at the podium. Thea Foglietta-Silverstein, Esq (l)
Honorable Matthew D Carrafiello spoke about all the great people who came out their South Philly neighborhood.
Charles Bernard spoke on behalf of Congressman Bob Brady who was in DC for a vote.
Reading of the Commission: Natalie Flynn, Jessica Foglietta and Jacquline Foglietta, Daughters of Judge Foglietta. Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta and his mother Lorraine Foglietta. Mrs Foglietta tells Hughie that the Bible she is holding is the same one that his father, Theodore Foglietta, held when his brother Tom Foglietta was sworn in as United States Ambassador to Italy.
Nieces and Nephews: Ron Donatucci, Jr, Michael Donatucci, Marina Foglietta Tereo, Christopher Foglietta Tereo and Theodore Foglietta III put the actual robe on the Judge.
The judge then ascends the bench and addresses the gathered guests. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and my family, said Foglietta. Most attorneys don’t dream of becoming a judge, but just want to fulfill the mission of their law school education of doing right by their clients and by society. But it is an elected position, so at some point Foglietta had judge as a goal, and today that dream was achieved. He thank his mom for her courage, direction and love. Then thanked his family, friends and colleagues. It’s nice to see someone’s dream come true, especially when you can tell they worked very hard to get there.
Afterwards there was a reception in the Law Library. In all the years I gave tours of City Hall, as part of the tour office in Room 121, I’ve never seen the law library. It’s steep in rich history. The chandeliers had light fixtures, but also candles in them. It’s a beautiful room.
Ron Donatucci, Jr, John Dougherty, Councilman Bob Henon, and Marita Crawford.
Dana and Ron Donatucci, Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta, and Natalie Foglietta Flynn with grandson Jackson Flynn
Tina Covington, David Krain and Dana Donutucci
Judge Dan Anders and Donald Carter. Which reminds me, tonight at Table 31 is the 1 year anniversary of Ladies Night there. DJ Johnny Looch will be spinning. See you there.
The Magnatta’s: Jim, Marisa, Mom and Jim Jr. Also spotted: Councilwomen Janie Blackwell, Councilman Mark Squilla, Register of Wills the Honorable Ronald R. Donatucci, Esq., Judge Jeanne Mayer, Barbara McDermott, Charles Mapp, Nino Tinari, Esq. Honorable Rose Marie DeFino-Nastasi, and Honorable Paul P Panepinto.
Haneef Nelson and Kevin Price from the 2nd Ward
Congratulations: Judge Angelo “Hughie” Foglietta with his mom Lorraine and brother Michael.
I had no idea these ceremonies occurred, and that’s exactly why I want to cover politicians and people who are connected in the City. – A word from my sponsor. Remember this Saturday you can enjoy a Valentine’s Day celebration with dancing, dining and an Eddie Bruce Cabaret at the Top of the Tower. $90 http://www.topofthetower.com/valentinesday.php

Does Bart Blatstein Want to Put A Casino Here?

Bart Blatstein said in a Q&A on Philebrity.com “I have not applied for a gaming license for that site,” ie the Philadelphia Inquirer site. Last year he bought the famed white tower that houses the Philadelphia Media Holdings. He hasn’t really said what he plans to do with the site, but recently there have been rumors that he wants to put a casino at the spot. (When I heard the rumor from two sources, I went out and shot these pixs to see what it would look like.)The Q&A came out of story that was making the rounds on Monday about Blatstein and a group of local investors who “plan to pursue an acquisition of some or all of the assets of Philadelphia Media Network, which operates The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and their shared website, philly.com. The partnership, calling itself Philly Hometown Media LLC, plans to make a cash offer for the newspapers. (source)I think a follow up question should be, would you consider putting a casino at this site? I too heard the rumor that he is interested in doing so. I also heard that the School Board Building might be up for sale. The school board functions would move to a smaller school, and meetings could be rotating at the various high schools.

Bart already owns the State Building at Broad & Spring Garden, and now he owns the Philadelphia Inquirer Building.

So I’m saying Bart, it’s a plausible idea. Could it save Philadelphia? Would it bring in much needed cash to the City? I do believe Bart could bring a nice upscale casino, to the “downtown” area of Philadelphia. It would be the closet casino to the Pennsylvania Convention Center. It’s near public transportation, and the expressway. I predict it’s going to be a casino by 2015

2nd Annual Comcast SportsNet Shining Star Awards

Last Friday night was the 2nd Annual Comcast SportsNet Shining Star Awards benefiting the March of Dimes. It took place at The Westin Philadelphia. You know where I was, in bed sick. The awards are hosted by Comcast SportsNet’s Ron Burke, and honored former Gov Ed Rendell for his incredible achievements, remarkable leadership and extraordinary service to the community. (Thanks to Mike Hirata for shooting these photos for PhillyChitChat.com)
The Event organizers pose for a quick picture before the crowd arrived: Jill Galdones, Kathleee Jones, Cynthia Weiss, Dan Finnerty, Ursula Keating, Beth Maggio, Keith Hopkins, and Maureen Quilter.
Award Presenters included basketball legend Sonny Hill, Phillie Kyle Kendrick, Flyer Blair Betts, and Ex Eagle Ike Reese. Here they are posing with recipients: Jonas and Lily Vasquez, Jake Koerner (and his sister), Kate Santangelo, and Jakob Mukalian.
Hall of Fame Sports Writer Ray Didinger poses with Becki Mauck and Claire O’Keefe.
Philadelphia Phillie Kyle Kendrick, Nick Mcilwain and Marisa Magnatta from the Preston and Steve show, with former Eagle and Radio host Ike Reese.
Presenter Ike Reese with recipient Jacob Mukalian.
Former Eagle Ike Reese, current Eagle Moise Fokou, and former Eagle Tra Thomas.
Presenter Sonny Hill poses with recipients Jonas and Lily Vasquez and their parents.
Busta Move: The Phillie Phanatic shows off a new dance move. Funds raised by the Shining Star Awards benefitting the March of Dimes presented by Wanamaker Entertainment Group support the March of Dimes prenatal wellness programs, research grants, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) family support programs, and advocacy efforts for stronger, healthier babies.
Presenter Blair Betts with recipient Kate Santagelo.Former Governor Ed Rendell arrived fashionably late. Any later and he would have missed out on receiving his lifetime achievement award. Through his support as Governor of Pennsylvania, the Newborn Screening Act was passed in 2008 guaranteeing newborn screening for disorders that threaten the lives of babies. Governor Rendell’s support not only raised the interest of those voting on the Act, but also raised public awareness of the devastating consequences of failure to screen and treat newborns for rare but fatal genetic and metabolic conditions. Rendell welcomed pro football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly to engage the House and Senate regarding the critical need to safeguard the health of all newborns. Because of Rendell’s work with the March of Dimes, newborns are now screened for hearing loss and 28 preventable metabolic disorders.

Kimmel Center: Merck Arts Education Gallery: “Under The Glass,” Philly native photojournalist Harvey Finkle

Friday night the Kimmel Center hosted reception with a preview of the opening of the first art exhibit in the Merck Arts Education Gallery: “Under The Glass,” The exhibition showcases works of Philly native photojournalist Harvey Finkle, and also chronicles the Kimmel Center Education Department’s growth and 10 year anniversary.
The Merck Arts Education Center (MAEC) provides arts education through a variety of learning styles and innovative technologies. Serving as a flexible arts resource for the Philadelphia community, MAEC promotes appreciation of the performing arts through diverse programming for children and adults. Housed at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, MAEC fosters collaborations with its Resident Companies and cultural communities and acts as a bridge to developing future audiences and performers. Support for the Merck Arts Education Center is generously provided by The Merck Company Foundation.
Julia Lopez, director of education at the Kimmel Center, and Homer Jackson, a curator at Merck, contacted Finkle about participating in the exhibition because they were familiar with his work.
Finkle told the gathering crowd that his “photographs connected art, music and history,” which makes his exhibit perfect for the new Merck space as it’s their mission too. Later in the evening students from the Kimmel Center Education Program’s Creative Music Program capped off the evening with an original piece they wrote, and a song by a talented vocalist, Andrew Lawson who currently is an assistant teacher in the Kimmel Center’s Bop & Swing community programThe Director of the Creative Music Program, Anthony Tidd, is a seasoned British-bred musician and pupil of the iconoclastic M-Base music collective. Tidd has worked on myriad GrammyÂŽ nominated and winning projects as band member and produced for The Roots and The Black Eyed Peas. Anthony Tidd’s curriculum draws from his replete experience and includes improvisation and ensemble reading, free music sessions, weekly core classes, master classes, public performances, special guest artists, exploration of rhythm, harmony, and melodic function, jazz history sessions, and music discovery from around the world.
Performances from the Kimmel Center Education Department’s Creative Music Program student ensemble and vocalist Andrew Lawson, alumnus of the Kimmel Center’s Teen Summer Arts Vocal Camp and current University of the Arts vocal student. I was surprised to learn that the Kimmel Center had such an extensive education branch to it’s organization. check it out here.

Celebrities in Philly: A 5th Anniversary Posting; Colin Firth Movie in Philly

First of all you know I was sick all last week, so I don’t have a new event for you yet. I was planning a few extra fun entries sometime this year to celebrate my fifth anniversary, like fun fashions over the past 5 years, how many hair styles has Nicole Cashman had and the who’s who of plastic surgery. Today we’ll start out with celebrities I’ve shot in Philly over the past 5 years. Hopefully Wednesday I will have something fun for you. And I hope none of you get this sinus infection, what an energy drainer.
+++++++++++++++++++++++

This year marks PhillyChitChat’s Fifth Anniversary on 7/7/12. Over the next few months I will be highlighting photos I’ve taken in the past 5 years of various subjects, like today’s “Celebrities I’ve Photographed in Philly.”
In 2005 my law firm sent me to NYC to work on a large case that was to head to trial. Originally I was only going to be there for 6 weeks, but it turned into 18 months, which really was a dream come true. After seeing every show on Broadway for the first couple months, I then discovered celebrities and sought them out to photograph them. In December 2006, I returned to Philly and “reality”. I knew there wasn’t a lot of celebs in Philly, but I hoped to find them. It worked out fairly well. The following are a few celebs I found in the past 5 years. (I also continued to shoot celebrities in NYC travelling there at least once a week for 2 years, then a lot less, until I stopped going in 2010)Within a week of me returning to Philly, there was a big time Red Carpet movie premiere of “Rocky” showing at the Prince Theater.
Then in February 2007, there was another Red Carpet premiere at the Prince Theater, “Pride” where Bernie Mac walked the red carpet. “Pride”, the story of Philadelphian Jim Ellis who started a swim team for troubled teens at the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. Philadelphia’s Terrence Howard starred at Jim Ellis. I thought maybe Philly had more celebrities that I thought? And although Philly could never rise to the level of NYC or LA with regards to the plethora of celebrities. Philly doesn’t disappoint. (In NYC you can’t go a block without seeing a celebrity or a celebrity event. So it took a little attitude adjustment for me.) Patti Smith debut her documentary at the Philadelphia Film Festival April 08. Here she’s introducing her son to Thom Cardwell, Director of Development at Phila Film Festival. A bandmate is looking on.My Heart Be Still: Dionne Warwick and Teena Marie at the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards 2009 at the Kimmel Center. Whatever happened to those awards?
Danny DeVito was in town filming exteriors for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. I caught him walking around near the Parkway, as I happened to be walking home. I love this shot. 6/3/08
Chelsea Clinton came to Philly in 4/2008 to get votes for her mom in the Pennsylvania Primary. Mark Segal, Publisher/Owner of Phila Gay Newspaper chats with Chelsea and Gov Ed Rendell as OMG Rob “Meathead” Reiner looks on.

People ask me how do I find the celebrities I shoot. Mostly by reading the newspaper. Now it’s a little easier as there’s Twitter and sometimes I catch tips on there, and of course having 7,000 readers people tip me off. More times than not it’s just good old fashion detective work. A lot of times people don’t realize what is important, that’s why I have to be alert and monitor many different outlets, then I determine what I think would have mass appeal. Barry Manilow and his back up singers leaving Ralph’s Italian Restaurant in South Philly. It takes a lot patience to wait for a celebrity to leave a restaurant. In NYC you’re usually waiting with 2 or 3 other photographers, here in Philly it’s usually just me. It’s not one of my favorite things, but I’ll do it cause that’s how you get some of the heavy hitters. In Philly I’ve gotten Demi Moore, Dev Patel, Reese Witherspoon, crazy Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, and a angry Jen Aniston. Now I hear that Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace To Film Mob Movie Here . More shots of celebs at restaurants and filming coming up. Charlie Mac Celebrity Weekend 2007: Mo’Nique
Sometimes I would be lucky and catch a celeb leaving their hotel on the way to a concert. David Lee Roth signs for fans at the Four Seasons, as he’s chomping on a cigar.
Jeff Daniels hanging on the set of “The Answer Man” in 2007, Grouchy guy, didn’t make it east to get a shot.
Jennifer Hudson interview with Laiya St. Claire for The Beat 100.3 in Philadelphia Contact Music Article 5/31/2008 Bradley Cooper in Limitless, moving some cones so his driver could make an almost speedy get away. (I love that movie.)
Michelle Williams, no not that Oscar nominated one, but the Destiny Child one, appeared in a play at the Merriam Theater. She’s posing with my bud Vince, who works for TMZ in NYC.James Taylor leaves the Ritz Hotel
Patti La Belle slipping into the Kimmel Center with her mink and minus make up 11/07
RuPaul here for the Phila Gay Film Festival. I just watched RuPaul’s Drag Race show yesterday, OMG had no idea it was so much fun. Look for it on Logo Online. Glad she found a career on TV cause the movie she was here to promote was a step above the worse Divine movie.John Colabelli, Publisher Philly Style Magazine, Actress Kerry Washington, Kristin Munro, Editor Philly Style Magazine and Jason Binn, Niche Media. PSM has brought a lot of celebs to town: Bon Jovi, Jarrod Spector (Loews presents Jersey Boys’ star, Jarrod Spector, at Solefood Restaurant and Lounge on Thursday, February 9th at 8:00pm.) Terrence Howard, John Legend, and many more..
Gov Rendell and Director Jonathan Demme at the Marian Anderson Awards 11/7/07

Brian Fortuna (r) competed on one season of Dancing With The Stars . He was partnered with former Miss USA Shandi Finnessey for Season 4. He burned up the dance floor with 6ABC’s Monica Malpass, who was a little shy about her dress and had this lovely lady stand in front of her.
John Leguizamo here promoting the M. Night Shyamalan film “The Happening”The great Maya Angelou receiving the Mariam Anderson Award in 2009
So cute, America Ferrera came to town in 2008 to stomp for Hillary Clinton in the Primary for President.
Honorable mention – Cameron Diaz near 20th & Locust filming “In Her Shoes” 2004, which was about 3 years before I became Philly Chit Chat. A year before I discovered what a blog was. Oh had I only know way back then… Hack with David Morse, filming across the street from where I live. 2003. Valentine’s Day is next week. Check out Top of the Tower on 2/11/12 for an Eddie Bruce Cabaret plus dinner & dancing; and pick your sweetie up a box of chocolates at Teuscher’s Chocolate ;
check out this new Colin Firth movie coming to Philly.

WING BOWL XX PHILADELPHIA – SportsRadio 94 WIP’s Wing Bowl 20 at the Wells Fargo Center

Thanks to SportsRadio 94 WIP’s Wing Bowl 20 for credentially me for media photos, for my advertiser, LinkSouthern Comfort Fiery Pepper for hiring me for spot shots, and for the nice guards who let me run up and down the back stair case to get all the following shots to bring you the story. It was my first time at the Wing Bowl I think I captured what everyone knows it’s about, but I wanted to capture the whole day, upfront, behind the scenes, on stage and the people who went.
There’s the pre-gamers that are out there at 4AM when the gates open, so when I got there at 5AM it seemed like they were partying all night long. (They probably were somewhere else.) There were campers, and uhauls, tail gate popping, foot ball tossing (in the dark), there was dancing and a whole lotta fun going on, but I have a wicked cold and I didn’t shoot any of it.
Here’s the crew from Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper club box upstairs
and one of the contestants and his Wingettes 7 floors below getting ready for the procession that will take them to the Eaters stage where he will compete to become the championing wing eater in the land.
This is a fan posing with a few Wingettes.
Kevin and a tall model. I don’t know who Kevin is, do you?
Backstage was fun
He reminds me of Stu Bykofsky, and I think Stu would agree.
I think he wears his lucky t-shirt every year without washing it.
I love these shots
Not fans of Andy Reid and his Wingettes. If I didn’t have this wicked cold I would have asked who I was shooting, but if you’re a long time reader you know I’ve been down for the count this week.

The girls said that I didn’t have to be in shape to sign up, that it would be an enlightening experience. I think I’ll take their word for it.
Many of the Wingette’s came from area strip bars like Oasis, Cheerleaders, Delilah’s and the Gold Club in Center City
Isn’t this guy on the Dr Oz diet? He does look thinner.
