Canadian Women visit Philadelphia in an exploratory trade mission

Late last month, women entrepreneurs involved in Atlantic Canada’s food and beverage industry participated in a trade mission that will build their export readiness skills and broaden their market horizons. Led by the Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the delegation participated in an exploratory trade mission to Philadelphia, PA and New York, NY from June 25 returning home to celebrate Canada Day on July 1.

(L – R) Susan, Mildred Raymond of Mil-Ray Foods http://www.milrayfood.com/ and Honourable Helena Guergis

The mission is part of the 2008 Women Exporters Initiative, a five-month export readiness program. It was organized by the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) – Nova Scotia Division and funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) with an investment of more than $263,000.

One of the speakers that I heard during one particular delicious meal at Fago de Chao was given by Mildred Ray, owner of Mil-Ray Food Company which is a Broad line Food Distributor, providing products to commercial establishments. Mildred outlined what it was like to get into a male dominated business and how she achieved success. Her Seven Rules to work by: 1) Know your product; 2) Pay Your Bills; 3) Rely on your credibility; 4) Be Friendly to your customers, never judge a person, many times she would go into a large restaurant and find the owner mopping the floor; 5) Make no enemies; 6) Serve your customers with all your ability 7) Never for the sake of a sale make a promise you cannot keep

Mr. Daniel Tremblay Consulate of Canada, located in Philadelphia greets guests

Women entrepreneurs from Atlantic Canada’s food and beverage industry learned first-hand how to expand their market horizons and build on their export readiness skills during this mission. National Defence and ACOA Minister Peter MacKay said that as a direct result of this mission, the participating women entrepreneurs now have the skills, knowledge and expertise to grow their business through exporting. HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY PHILLY CHIT CHAT re: changes are coming

One year ago I set out to do something different for the Philadelphia blog scene. I had recently returned from NYC (Manhattan) where I had lived for 18 months on a business trip, and fell into a side career as a celebrity photographer/paparazzi/blogger (see http://www.ConfessionsofaPaparazzi.com ) I would shoot events and report about the on goings of the people I observed, including the other photographers. I was inspired by several social sites I had read even before I moved to NYC including the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Social Scene, Phila Magazines Party Pictures, Gawker, Patrick McMullen, Hamptons Magazine, NY Magazine, the NYT Society Pages, and a few other sites. When I returned to Philly I wanted to create something similar for our town, not particularly celebrity based, but something that would cover all the basis. A site that not only covered events, news and social happenings that weren’t getting the coverage they deserved by the dailies, or other blogs/sites, and certainly not on a daily basis by the monthly magazines; I thought what about A Social Journal or Diary with no regard to class, age, race or standing, with comprehensive coverage of the event including photos of the people who attended, the venue, the event planners, the PR Companies, what goes into creating an event, promoting the event, and anything else that was interesting to write about in the Philly area. For the most part over this past year I have done a lot of what I set out to do, and the results were amazing, a potpourri of coverage. First I want to thank Thom Cardwell who took me under his wing last April 2007 and allowed me to cover the Philadelphia International Film Festival from soup to nuts. That was an amazing experience, and really solidified my vision. Now I cover those Film Events as a press person as my blog has become a news source, in addition some of the photos I have taken in Philadelphia have appeared in the Inquirer, and in magazines including People, Us Magazine, Elle, InStyle and in the overseas market. Now many of Philly’s PR Firms call on me to cover their events as my site gets results. GOOGLE has taken notice and as soon as I post an entry they rank it, and in Philadelphia/Philly it ranks high when you do a word searches, most of the time when newly ranked as the first item. After a few weeks it will still be on the same page or the second page. So if someone wanted to know how to dress for the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center’s Round Up, held annually, and they did a search say on “children’s crisis treatment center round up”, my site comes up first and they can see how people dressed for that event.Which brings me to my second big thank you, to the Nicole Cashman & Associates. Cashman & Assoc. was the first PR Firm that realized the innovation of my blog as a news source and allowed me to come and shoot the opening of G Lounge, something that I wasn’t even sure someone would think was a legitimate news venue (I hadn’t heard about SocialPhilly.com yet) and it didn’t hurt that sometimes my photos would appear in INQlings as a photo from this event that I took did. From that one event, and the popularity of the G Lounge, Google took notice and drove traffic to my site as well as the G Lounge. My dream of creating a Philly Social Diary took off. Over the past six months I have gone to a lot of events and really gotten myself out there. Now when I shoot an event someone always tells me, your Philly Chit Chat, I read you every day. Which always embarrasses me a little. So as I pass my one year anniversary I want to say that I am kicking it up a notch and have started to make a few changes to make Philly Chit Chat the kind of site where people want to read, want me to cover their events, whether it’s a celebrity red carpet event (I won’t be giving that up), charity event, fox hunt, the grand opening parties held at stores, the Zoobilee, visiting dignitary, press junkets (hello Allied & Jesse Cute, of Terry Hines & Associates CALL ME I WANT TO COVER YOUR EVENTS), & promote as many charity events as possible while continuing to write about interesting things that occur in our City, and breaking news when it happens and photographing you and the people you want to know. I also want to thank YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU, MY READERS, and Michael Klein, Mary Patel, Holly Dean, Dana Lombardo, Carrie Nork, Nicole Bilcher, Ashley Schaffer and all the girls from Cashman, Steve McCann, Brett Silvers, James Duggan, Gus Calabrese, man about town Matthew Vlahos, Nathan Learner, Phyllis Halpern, and Sarah Doheny for their guidance & wisdom in the society world. (Mitch Williams at the Big Brother/Big Sister charity bowling party in March)And thanks to David Iams, Brian Rochford and Carol Springer for passing the baton to the next generation of folks covering the Social Scene. (which by the way I was going to change my name to, I even bought Philly Social Scene, but I did a survey and folks said I already branded myself Philly Chit Chat; so even if the Hilton’s and the Forbes roll their eyes when I say I am shooting for my site Philly Chit Chat, it’s a Social Diary! I have to grin and bear it – LOL; BUT by this time next year they are going to want to be on the site!! How about you, email me at Buzz @phillyChitChat.com won’t you?)

MIKE & HUGHE’S 7TH ANNUAL JULY 5TH PARTY

OK to cap off the whirlwind 48hrs that began at the crack of dawn on July 4th (Please go back in time and read all the entries when you have say about 3hrs time free), Mike and I hold our 7th Annual July Fourth Gala not on July 4th, but whenever the Penns Landing fireworks are held. You got that? I have to admit I was photo fatigued by the time I got to Saturday night, so I barely have all 28 of my guests photographed, and I didn’t take a darn picture of my spread. I will say one of the most popular dishes was a banana bread cream loaf by John Soden, his girlfriend, PR Style Maven Sarah Doheny http://www.yubpr.com/ ; also in the picture is Andrew and Scott trying to figure out the light sabers I distributed to my guests.

On the balcony I found my friend Bob chatting up my friend Phyllis. I used to play softball with Ball when I first arrived in Philadelphia a few years back. Bob just competed in the Philadelphia Schuylkill Ironman Competition, have you ever heard of anything more vile than swimming in the Schuylkill River (I asked him if he kicked any dead bodies or cars, he didn’t). He’s a brave man. Chip is enjoying the festivities, but I really just wanted to show off my garden.
Everyone always congregates in the kitchen. At one point more than half the guys could be found here. I guess they want to be close to the booze and the ice cream sandwiches that I had in the freezer. L-R Jeremy, Mike, George and Henry. He and Chip just celebrated their 17th anniversary.
The Jeffs make another appearance, thanks for the wine, chips and oh boy cookies that I found Sunday morning as I prepared to fold the bag. I bet you were wondering why I didn’t put them out last night. What the Heck is bob looking at, is it fireworks time?

OK Mike breaks out his PS3 and everyone takes a turn on the track. Next to George is my fabulous friend and man about town Matthew Vlahos
Jeff makes a point, Bob and kiss killer smileTLA’s Rich Wolf with Susan Helfrich, PIGLFF’s Developmental Director Thom Cardwell with journalist Mary Patel stops by for a few. Mary is heading to Miami and is going to miss opening night of the film festival on Thursday. The two Tim’s make an appearance. We never see enough of them. They are always busy at home playing their WII
The 12th Street Gym Posse – Henry, David, Gary & Mark (These guys don’t play games)
My two M’s

Norbert and Deming. Deming and I have known each other since the beginning of time, growing up a few towns away from each other in N.J. and then moving to Philly within months of each other. Deming is 6’1 and Norbert is much taller much to Deming’s delight.
Earlier in the evening we gathered on the terrace to watch the fireworks. They
were a bit of a disappointment this year as the barge must have been moved a tad to the left. Usually the fireworks display is right between the two crosses, oh well. The party roared on until passed midnight, and no one seemed to mind, except me.
I did notice my tomato plant has ripened. That was exciting. Were there bees on my balcony?

The next day there was a double rainbowThis week begins the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. It is going to be a blast and I will be covering every nook and cranny for you to see, but right now the best way to see all that is going to be shown and the parties that you can attend can be found on Philly Gay Calendar as Steve McCann one of the best sites with the 411: http://phillygaycalendar.com/filmfest/index.php

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM re: Party with the Siblings minus One sister, Crista

OK well if I didn’t do enough in the last 24hrs (make sure you go back to Friday to see all the activities I covered; your either at home in your PJs as you took Monday off, or you’re in the office where half your co-workers have taken off and its slow, so go do it), now it’s the Saturday after Mom’s birthday when we usually celebrate it with the family, and this year it’s one of the significant birthdays, but you’ll only know if you can read the cake. It’s easy to shop for mom, she loves yellow roses or sunflowers. I had Mike wear his yellow shirt for the occassion; here he is with my bro-in-law Frank, who is married to my sister Margaret. A few of my nieces, Nicole (Janine), Kelsey (Margaret) & Lauren (Judy). I am so blessed to have a close loving family, aren’t my girls cute? They really all look like their mothers too. Those poor dads:(
Mom is getting ready to blow out the candles. You can not appreciate how huge this cake is
until you see a side shot after it’s been cut
Here’s that trouble maker Ella, with her dad Joe looking on; He’s married to my sister Tracy. Mom, Uncle Charlie Libertella, Aunt Rosie Shannon and Aunt Angie Riccardi
My mom fought the homeowners group to keep this fence. If you want to keep the geese out of your yard, this little fence does it. The geese are too lazy and dumb to fly over it. My mom read about it, got her neighbors together and put up the little 8 inch fence. The association threatened to fine mom and she said if you can find a better solution than I will go for it, otherwise I am keeping this fence up. And they changed the rules.

Janine, Tommy, TJ and Nicole visting from NC
I was clever here. This is my brother Ray and his girlfriend Andrea, but since Crista couldn’t make the trip as she lives in NC, I had them sit in front of the portrait that Crista sat for when she was 5 years old. It was a Christmas Present for dad, who has since passed away (see May 2, 2008) Here’s a family shot of the girls with their kids

but I love this outtake, can you see what’s happening?
It was a beautiful day, made even more beautiful because Judy was able to spend a good part of the day with us. Please keep her in your prayers, the hard part is coming up as she begins chemo. Thank you. Happy One Year Anniversary to my blog today!!

Philadelphia JULY 4TH FIREWORKS from the Philadelphian re: dreaming of John Legend

It’s not lost on me how important this day is to our country, The crowds at 8PM, it’s begining to rain, but that doesn’t stop them. Mike and I have this party every year; we keep the invites to a minumum mostly because it’s a difficult to park in this area as we are at ground zero fireworks. But the worse part of the whole night is leaving, so the invite list is limited to people who live in Center City. The snipers take position on the roof of the Philadelphian, residents gather on their balconies, let the festivities begin.
I love catching the parade. Thanks to Southwest Airlines for sponsoring it.
Night falls and our guests begin to arrive at Mike’s moms house, every year she is nice enough to vacate her place and settle into our place so we can have a shindig.
Although Rick lives “in the front” of the building, we’re glad he stops by our place. Rick is a former writer for the soap “Another World” and several other TV shows. A few years back moved down her from, where else, NYC. I’m not even going to mention the Sixth Borough thing, I know how people hate that term, almost as much as “Staycation”, another term I love. The two Jeff’s stop by. Separated at birth united by love.

Laura Burkhardt was a pleasant surprise stopping up for a few moments on her was to her VIP seats to see John Legend. She was nice enough to take Bob along with her to enjoy the concert. Which I watched on TV, dry, but not as up close as Laura and Bob would scream to me.
They made it back just in time to enjoy the fireworks from the balcony with tall tales and merriment

Congress led the way for the encouragement of fireworks on the Fourth of July by authorizing a display on July 4, 1777, in Philadelphia, a year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “At night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded with thirteen rockets on the commons. Another colorful display took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1779: “In the evening a sett [sic] of brilliant fireworks were exhibited, particularly excellent rockets, which, after ascending to an amazing height in the air, burst, and displayed thirteen stars.” http://gurukul.american.edu/heintze/fireworks.htmThe first fireworks in Boston took place on July 4, 1777. A newspaper reported: “In the evening Col. Crafts illuminated his park on the commons, threw several shells, and exhibited a number of fireworks.” Boston had another display in 1779 when thirteen rockets were fired. Congratulations to Carrie Nork and Dino Minelli who were married on July 5, 2008The Jeff’s had a blast David Perkiss, the man of the moment, Matthew Vlahos; behind him is Steven Tyson and his beau Ben visiting Pittsburgh Bob still glowing about John Legend

Laura enjoying the party glow stick I handed out to my guests
Sometimes I wish I could invite the whole city up to see the fireworks from the balcony. They are so right there, and it’s an amazing view.
Thanks for coming everyone, see you next year, er well some of you tomorrow night.

HADDONFIELD NJ JULY 4TH 2008 PARADE PHOTOS

Haddonfield NJ is a quaint little town about 10 minutes from Philadelphia. For me it is sandwiched between two of the towns I grew up in, Audubon until I was 8, and Cherry Hill, NJ where some of my family still lives. Haddonfield is a historic town dating back founded by Elizabeth Haddon (1680-1762), whose Quaker father, John Haddon, bought a 500 acre tract of land in the English colony of West Jersey to escape religious persecution. Elizabeth set sail alone from Southwark, England to the New World in 1701. I love the historic stately homes in Haddonfield, (this one can be yours for $745,000 Click here to learn more about this listing. )and the quaint front porched homes draped with flags, and at Halloween draped with spooky charactersBut for me it’s the July 4th Parade every year that is my favorite as it reminds me of my childhood and the small town innocent atmosphere that I relish, that I don’t always feel in a City of more than a million people.

The parade goes right down “Main Street USA” or Kings Highway; George Washington really did sleep here, or at least enjoy Iced Tea at the Indian King Tavern. Not a pint as Haddonfield has been a dry town since the early years.

The crowds are always plentiful and everyone gets into the spirit of the day wearing their red, white and blue
I love this parade for their political statements and community activism. In past years much has been said about politicians, the process or who they were supporting, this year not much about that but a lot to say about recylcing.
Can-can girls
Potholes and their effects of injuring runners, walkers, kids on bikes and car tiresThe best part of the parade is the kids with their decorated bikes, scooters, wagons “In Dog Pen Dence Day”and riding in a convertible with the familyThe Masons on parade

No parade would be complete without a politician or two. I choose to feature Louis Greenwald, who’s mother was Mayor of Cherry Hill when I was growing up. (Greenwald was just 9 when his mother, the late Maria Barnaby Greenwald, answered a newspaper ad in early 1977 soliciting residents who were interested in good government. The housewife-turned- politician
went on to become a beloved Cherry Hill mayor, the first female freeholder director in the state and a county surrogate.)

For a local like me Haddonfield has contributed a lot to American Pop-culture, like did you know that In the movie When Harry Met Sally… (directed by Rob Reiner), Billy Crystal’s character, Harry, is from Haddonfield.[18] ; Although the movies in the Halloween franchise are set in Haddonfield, Illinois, Haddonfield, N.J. is in fact the inspiration for the town. Debra Hill, the co-writer of the movie, grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey.[19] (Also the high school in the movie is a replica of the one in Haddonfield); A scene in the movie AI takes place in Haddonfield, NJ and captures a shot of a house on Kings Highway. This is the location of the Flesh Fair, a rally of anti-robot activists.[20]; Photographer Frank Stefanko took two famous album covers for Bruce Springsteen in Haddonfield, Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978) and The River (1980).[21]
Haddonfield, New Jersey – World’s First Dinosaur Skeleton discovered here
In October 2003, a statue was erected in downtown Haddonfield commemorating the World’s First Dinosaur Skeleton Discovery in October, 1858. The Hadrosaurus foulkii was the first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton found, and the first to be mounted for public display. It sparked the start of the field of dinosaur paleontology, and can probably be blamed for the profusion of life-size dino statues across America.

I will be uploading photos to my photo album so that you can review them, right click and save a smaller version of buy a larger version for yourself.

AUDUBON NJ JULY 4TH with the Shaw Family & Firetruck Photos

Audubon is another apple pie and baseball kinda town, where everyone knows each other, there’s a main street and traditions are hard and fast. I lived here til I was 8 and have fond memories of the town, especially the train tracks which ran right in front of my house. On the right you can see some kids waving to the conductor who is waving back and blowing his horn.

I wanted to make it a point to stop by on July Fourth as Audubon has a tradition of giving its residents a ride on the firetruck at noon every year. I wrote about Cole Clark, the son of my friends Paul and Jody, and his fascination of firetrucks and fireman. The fire station is right down the street.
Get there early for the 12PM kick off as the line gets long. Cousins Caroline and Delaney
Dillon and Cole (Not named after me, but after the General Hospital character, but an “uncle” can dream)
The firehouse was booming with business as they fed us hot dogs,
soda, beer and water ice. (Hmm Wilfred Brimley?) Thanks to the sponsors.I have a hat just like that
Delaney gets on board

Everyone ready

Don’t they look like they are having fun. I’m glad I stopped by on my way to my annual family reunion. There’s Uncle Jeff in black. The peps in Audubon get into the holiday spiritI grew up in the house with the chimney until I was 8 years old. Dad owned it for another 20 years and used it as his doctors office. And my sisters lived in the apartment above the office after they graduated college. Dad was a strict landlord, and made sure the girls paid their rent on time. After they moved out he gave half the proceeds back. Damn I wish I had gotten that deal!!Jeff, Julie, Jody Shaw and I all went to Paul VI High School and attended St. Vincent Pallotti Church. The Camden Diocese has chosen to close this church and merge it with one in the neighboring towns of Haddon Heights or Oaklyn. All I can think of is the literally the Sins of our Fathers are being paid by our children. Can’t the Catholic Church sell some of their holdings, their crown jewels, under used ocean front property in Stone Harbor instead of closing the neighborhood parishes?
(From the Courier-Post) In a recent letter to parishioners, Bishop Galante defended his decision to merge the Haddon Township parish with St. Aloysius in Oaklyn, with the Oaklyn parish as a primary worship site.Six months ago, St. Vincent spent $1 million to build a 7,000-square-foot rectory and a nearly 8,000-square-foot memorial hall to replace the toxic-mold-ridden old rectory.
Because the church shares its parking lot with Paul VI High School, parishioners have 400 off-street parking spaces available to them, compared to less than 50 at St. Aloysius, and the church seats roughly 800 people, about twice the size of the Oaklyn church.
“Everybody that we talked to said this defies logic,” Pierzynski said.

TAKE ACTION! Write to Archbishop Myers, the Archbishop of Newark and Archbishop Sambi, the Nuncio in Washington D.C. to voice your concerns about Bishop Galante and the Diocese of Camden. THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!Most Rev. John J. MyersArchbishop of Newark 171 Clifton Ave.Newark, NJ 07104-0500

Then it was onto my dad’s side (Dillon/Laux) annual family reunion which is always held on 7/4, with my sister Tracy & her two kids. We stayed about an hour, at which time I had to prepare for the party I was having for a few friends that evening. Here are Timmy & Ella enjoying the picnic. At the Laux Lake in Elk Twp. NJ

PHILADELPHIA FIREWORKS RAIN OR SHINE July 4th says City Representative Melanie Johnson

But before we get to that, on Thursday as part of the http://www.americasbirthday.com/ celebration the Ben Franklin Parkway played host once again to a “Fiesta on the Parkway”

I was there about 3PM when the event began as my Firm closed early for the July 4th Holiday )Thanks Joe), but I could see that in a few hours kids of all ages would enjoy lots of things to do andeatdolisten and dance but as I made my way down the Parkway I saw something new this year it was NBA on the Parkway?? It is a new day, where did that come from, was it on the schedule? I’ll look… “What’s more, the NBA Nation Presented by SPRITE tour bus will roll into Philly with interactive games, videos of the 50 greatest NBA plays and other hands-on activities. ” Yep there it was, as part of the Fiesta on the Parkway. Guess they weren’t going for any world record line dances this year, but these kids were breakdancing, do they still call it that?
but I was entertain by this. Lots of in the air dunks.
There was also an exhibit where you could compare your arm length to a few NBA players

or put your feet in their foot prints. Beverly was kind enough to try out Kobe Bryant’s SIZE 14 for me.
Then I made my way over to the stage on the Art Museum steps where the staging area was just about complete.

it seemed like only yesterday, er Tuesday when that they started putting it together. If you want to catch John Legend rehearsing for the big concert tonight, stop by about NOON, that’s when they usually run through the event.Breaking News: Here’s the new 2008, new administration logo on which the parade participants will stop and perform tonight. Gosh I hope it doesn’t rain again this year.
Promising to avoid a repeat of last year’s fireworks fiasco, City Representative Melanie Johnson said Philadelphia’s holiday display will go off rain or shine tomorrow night – on time, or with plenty of notice if there will be a delay.
The fireworks are set to begin at 11 over the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Last year, with the threat of rain and lightning, those gathered on the Parkway waiting for the display were told to go home because the 10:45 p.m. show was canceled. About 40 minutes later, after the crowd dispersed, the fireworks began.
This year, the fireworks are set to begin after the R&B singer John Legend ends his set and leaves the stage.
But once again, the forecast threatens showers and thunderstorms, which could last throughout the weekend.
“Rain won’t stop us,” says Johnson. “The only thing that will delay the fireworks is if the weather is severe.”
And if that happens, Johnson promised to put the public announcement system to good use.
The Sunoco Sweet Sounds of Liberty Concert and Fireworks begins at 8:30 p.m. in front of the Art Museum with the sounds of Philly’s own Russell Tompkins Jr. and the New Stylistics, followed by Legend and ending in fireworks. (This will be my view again this year)

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20080703_Philadelphias_July_4_fireworks_rain_or_shine.html

As far as parking is concern, take mass transit, or park in Center City and walk to the BF Parkway. Even if you did find parking, leaving after the event is a nightmare. (Update re: Parking: http://www.phillyblog.com/philly/fairmount-art-museum-brewerytown/20217-traffic-parking-4th-fairmount-ave.html has a good rundown of years past and parking on July 4th)
Happy Fourth of July, be safe and Happy Anniversary to my blog – 1 Year Old today!! (Almost 100ks hits in a year, pretty darn good for a blog I didn’t promote enough; this year that will all change)

DECLARE YOUR INDEPENDENCE BY dumping the traditional hotel and Booking a Night at THE INDEPENDENT Philadelphia’s New Classy Boutique Hotel

Style and substance are at the core of my choice for a boutique hotel and the newly opened Independent fits the bill. “Boutique hotel is a term popularised in North America and the United Kingdom to describe intimate, usually luxurious or quirky hotel environments. Boutique hotels differentiate themselves from larger chain/branded hotels and motels by providing personalized accommodation and services / facilities. ” The Independent at an address to remember 1234 Locust Street Philadelphia Pa 215-772-1440

Last week I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony (R-L) Stephanie Esposito, Vice President of Group Sales of Hersha Hotels, one of my hero’s (are you keeping count, did I ever mention I was a Foundation of Architecture Tour Guide for 7 years, there’s a theme here with who I admire most in this City) Director, CEO Meryl Levitz of GPTMC and Neil H. Shah, President of Hersha Hospitality, do the honors. Down this hall you will find 8 out of the 24 most beautifully appointed rooms that have graced Philadelphia. The Independent’s design reflects a charming sophistication that is consistent with the building’s architecture and the local area of Midtown Village. Interior Designer, Robert Moskowitz of Rittenhouse Interior Design Group, has redefined the four-story building’s interior, bringing a chic- refined aesthetic to the warm and inviting hotel. The 24-room charmer features hardwood floors, exposed brick, cathedral ceilings, and flat panel HDTVs. Oversized guest rooms range in size up to 470 square feet and are divided into ten standard rooms, twelve deluxe rooms, a gracious suite, and a residential duplex suite. Guest rooms feature hardwood floors with New Zealand Wool area rugs, custom window treatments, Robert Allen custom bedding, and the finest pillow-top mattresses available — Serta Presidential. Each room enjoys a variety of unique features such as fireplaces, exposed brick walls, cathedral ceilings, French windows, or loft bedrooms.

Having stayed in a few of Ian Schrager’s boutique hotels (let’s call him the father of boutique hotels) in NYC like the Hudson Hotel, The Parmount or The Gramercy, I have to say that the Independent has the same style and class but far more bang for your buck ($199 rack rate) and the rooms are twice the size. Philadelphia has been a world class city for awhile, and now we have a world class boutique hotel.

Most of the window views are of the wonderful Philly skyline, or the English garden next door. But all of them contain the brains that are located in the phone system which are placed in the room on the desk or on the night table. The phone operates an energy control system. As the guest enters the room, the phone is activated and the rooms temperature is elevated to an occupied mode. The guest then has normal control of the room’s electrical and HVAC systems through the phone. The system eliminates the need for sensors to be mounted on the wall or ceiling. When a guest leaves the room he can check out via the phone and the room goes into “unoccupied mode.” In this mode the room’s HVAC system’s operating temperature ranges are set back and the power to the switches and plugs is turned off to reduce energy consumption. The phone also controls the TV, the lighting system, the thermostat in the bathroom and most importantly the “Do Not Disturb” sign, which will be lit outside the door so no one will disturb you. No more getting up and placing the darn thing on the door knob. The bathrooms by the way are chic, carry fine skin care products and shampoos that would’ve found their way into my pockets had they not already been occupied with camera batteries, note pad and pen. (Oh the funny story I could tell you when I stayed at the Paramount last year, but it’s 2:30AM on a work night)
Some bathrooms have exposed brick, which I found a bit sexy (blush) and could become rather steamy with those hot weekend rates the hotel has been promoting ($149). It was interesting for me to see that other hotel management was invited to check out the Independent. I was told that this is done because if the said hotel is overbooked they might consider sending guests over to the Independent or visa versa. Did I mention that each room comes with a mini refrigerator and microwave. I would suggest that you cancel that Marriott Residential hotel reservation and book a week here instead.
After the touring was done lunch was serves, which was catered by John Stock who served Philly’s favorite mini hoagies, sandwiches, salad and delicious lemon bars. Drinks were served on the house marble breakfront, where a continental breakfast and evening cocktails will be served.
I also had a chance to meet these lovely ladies and talk about the Independent and the quaint MidTown Village. (L-R) Ann Lage, Rittenhouse Interior Design Group, Denise S. Kaminski, Mgr. Royal Bank America and Debbie Gilmore (Royal Bank America). The hotel’s lobby is accented by a crystal chandelier and features a 30-foot by 8-foot, hand-painted work of art created by local muralist, Kim Senior. Senior is an accomplished Philadelphia artist whose mural and screen paintings can be seen around the city in both classical and contemporary styles. For The Independent, she has created a vibrant image of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, which spans three stories, rising from the hotel’s lobby. Moskowitz’s design paired with Senior’s vivid piece de resistance offers guests a tailored, soothing feel amidst a rich color palette. (Check out Kim Senior’s work here and read the story of how she painted the mural SIDEWAYS!! http://kimsenior.blogspot.com/ ) The lobby is also where you may meet anyone of the helpful people below,

but there’s a good chance you will find Jim Evans the Resident Manager of The Independent, who can answer your questions, send you off to a nice restaurant or direct to your desired location. Finally, the hotel is stylish and chic, but I think you will want to stay here because you’ll like the intimacy, the comfortable beds, the breakfast, the location, and especially the price. BREAKING NEWS: Last minute 4th of July rate they are offering for the entire weekend, it is $139 a night.

PS Have A Safe Holiday Weekend, but if you’re near a computer I will be posting over the next three days, it’s a selfish thing as I am nearing my year anniversary and I want to go over the 100ks mark by the time I hit it Monday. Also I want to stay on top of the timing of my photos. I want to get the events to you in real time ie the day after I shoot it, unless of course something is going to be published as I have those contracts that limited me from scooping the paper. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl versus Hancock re: The Battling Smith’s at the Box Office

Did you know that Philadelphia born Will Smith’s nickname is Mr July by the media, no not because of his biggest movie ever, “Independence Day” but it’s due to the fact that most of his summer blockbusters open in July. Today just adds to the number of times that has happened, it’s the opening of his movie “Hancock”; perhaps he has passed along this good fortune to his 7 year old daughter Willow who has her own movie opening up today…Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. That explains why Will did not show up on the Red Carpet for the premiere of her movie last week. Here’s the press pen I am about to be put into. Sucks living in Philly, I always get up there late and miss the prime spots.

Here’s the Will Smith family now. Mom Jada Pinka-Smith (Looking hot) watches over Willow and son Jaden as the get “lit up”. (Interesting the daughter is named Willow (after day Will Smith), son named Jaden (after mom Jada Pinka-Smith) born July 8, 1998 Austin Macdonald: Born July,17,1995 greets his fans

Ought oh, Paris Hilton has been a bad influence on these girls – The Clique Girlz are an American girl group from Atlantic City, New Jersey that is comprised of sisters Paris (born January 9, 1996) and Destinee Monroe (born June 16, 1994) and their best friend Ariel Moore (born July 27, 1994). The girls were formerly known as Clique in 2004 before changing their name. Where the hell are there parents? SOME of the photographers refused to shoot them as they turned off by the way they were dressed, I shot them for the blog. (UPDATE: I removed my description of how they were dressed. I listened to them on You Tube and they good voices, but I think that they dress inappropriate for 12 & 13 year olds, especially for something like “The American Doll” movie. On their website they look a lot more age appropriate. http://www.cliquegirlz.com ; It doesn’t matter how talented you are, my mom never let me listen to Madonna til I was 18)

Ahh back to the wholesome Chris O’Donnell, his wife Caroline and five daughters. The Smith Family again
Jaden is going to be a big star like his dad, someday.

Julia Ormond stunningly beautiful, classy and professional

Unlike this piece of work who refused to take off her sunglasses on the Red Carpet. I have yet to get a good shot of Julia Roberts where she doesn’t look like
a dog. She’s the co-producer, with her sister Lisa, she’s here to promote her movie and she’s the biggest name on the carpet and she has this sourpuss face (I yearn for the big toothy smile that she gives in the movies or in interviews for the masses to see). Another hound in the movie is pictured below who was more cooperative and has no airs.
Actor Maximillion Drake “Max” Thieriot is bound to break some hearts in the future
Spencer Breslin, who’s currently in “The Happening” signs for fans and came to the premiere to support his sisterAbigail, you know the little girl from “Little Miss Sunshine”, she also starred in Charlotte’s Web where coinkinky Julia Roberts was the spider, Charlotte. Connections, it’s all about who you know. Across the street you can see the fans who have lined up to see a glimpse of a few celebrities. If you want to see a good premiere coming up check out Mama Mia with Meryl Streep on 7/16 at the Ziegfeld in NYC.
