The Tattoo Convention was in town and look who got New Ink, Philly Gossip ++

Good Sunday, hope you’re keeping dry today. I’ll be working columns, then I’m headed to Panorama for a Valentine’s Day Pawty with my best canine friend, to benefit Saved Me. Panorama is hosting an afternoon cocktail party, where guests can celebrate the holiday with their beloved pets.  Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit local non-profit www.savedme.org. Then taking a tour of the new Blue Gin Distillery, then watching the GRAMMY’s, so excited. What a line up. OK Here’s some fun Philly Gossip this Sunday.

Actor James McAvoy was walking around with his Philly girlfriend Saturday. So far he’s gone to Wawa, and CVS Local artist Larry Collins has a drawing that is featured in the movie James is in, M Night’s Split, which I’m sure will be near the top of the Box Office again this weekend. Split as you know was filmed in Philadelphia last year.

This year we have an awesome movie with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. Here are the extras cast by Heery-Loftus Casting backstage at the Kimmel Center on Thursday where they shot a scene.

I’ve been photographing them all week and tonight on CBS3 Philly Tori Woodill will have a segment with me on how to see the stars while they’re in town.

Congrats to the Spain’s on 55 years of marriage. Super nice couple and very philanthropic.

Saturday Shots – A few Fun Shots Taken This Week & Notable News

Hope you had a great week. Thought I’d drop a few shots on Saturday here. Many of you may not follow me on Instagram where I post about 4 shots a day, a lot are newsworthy, which means a new store, a sale or something interesting. Plus I shoot things in general and just run out of time to post them, maybe on Saturday’s I’ll post them here.

Saturday

On Thursday I headed to the Untouchables film set, which was at the Kimmel Center. It was still snowing, but worse it was freezing. Thankfully when I arrived Kevin Hart’s limo had the engine on, so I knew it wouldn’t be long before he popped out to head back to his trailer.

Saturday

I could have stayed and caught a few more of the actors, but I noticed the trees were stunning with their new snow coats (That’s the wardrobe trailer on the right – this is the shot that told me get out and see beauty.)

Philly Gossip: Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman & Bryan Cranston Spotted, Malcolm Jenkins, Meek Mills and More

Happy Monday, I know no one is really happy on Monday. I usually publish this on Sunday, but I slept til noon after the Ball Saturday night and well here we are. Check out Philly Mag and Metro today for pixs from the Ball.  Here’s something to put a smile on your face – Philly Gossip Monday: Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman & Bryan Cranston Spotted, Malcolm Jenkins, Meek Mills and More.

Hart

Yeah Phillywood has kicked off. Friday Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman were in Philly for a table reading of the new Neil Berger movie “Intouchable” which I mentioned a few weeks ago would
be filming in Philadelphia. Friday evening car scenes were filmed in Center City, but the principles weren’t involved.  Cranston and Kidman flew out to prepare for the Screen Actors Guild Award Awards last night. Kidman presented, and Cranston won for his performance in “All the Way. Be on the look out for them for the next 4 weeks and drop me a line if you see they, especially if you have a picture with them.

Since Nicki Minaj dumped Meek Mills, his new Sixers seatmate looks to be Kevin Hart. Let’s keep it that way cause nearly every game Kevin Hart has attended the Sixers have won.  Also spotted at the game
was Allen Iverson, M. Night Shyamalan, who’s on quite a winning streak himself as his newest movie, the psychological thriller Split, was the No. 1 movie again at the US box office this weekend, holding on to the top spot for a second week running. It’s now made $78 million domestically and $24 million internationally, pushing its worldwide total above $100 million. (I think I’m going to see it tonight at The Roxy)

Mike Jerrick Suspended from Fox 29 over Bullshit, Video & Philly Gossip

Where Mike Jerrick is now: Taking care of his mental health.

https://www.facebook.com/MikeJerrickFox29/

Hey it’s Thursday so that means another Philly Gossip column for you. Friday I’ll post Maria Papadakis’ wedding photos, then Sunday it’s more Philly Gossip,  and Monday The Academy Ball Fashion Photos.

Mike Jerrick’s antics on Fox 29 have produced plenty of viral videos over the years. Who could forget his mimicking the Kardashian’s, or his hysterical Ryan Lochte interview with Shenielle Jones a 4 years ago, which became very popular again this past summer during the Olympics. Well no one was laughing at Fox on Monday when he accidentally said the word bullshit live on Good Day. (Although millions of people in the USA were cheering Right On Mike when the video went viral)

According to the national news site FT LIVE Fox29’s Philly Anchor Mike Jerrick has been suspended for a week by the parent company Fox after he said Kellyanne Conway is a good bullshitter accidentally on air Monday morning; and honestly she is; Kellyanne told Chuck Todd on Sunday’s Meet The Press that Spicer’s take on the supposed record breaking inauguration crowds was “Alternative Facts”, she even crack a shit eating grin herself, so calling her out was a natural response, but you’re probably not allowed to accidentally curse on TV.

Thursday President Trump will be in town at the Republican Retreat in Philly.

Call Fox National in support of Mike Jerrick 1 (888) 369-4762 to complain, not local Fox 29. The decision was made by parent company. And please don’t boycott Fox 29, they’re great people. I only reported on this because people make mistakes, he apologized. it’s my biggest fear to accidentally curse when I’m on TV. Even Fox News’ Mike Wallace hammered away at Trump’s Communications Director the other night, calling Trump a liar. I was impressed.

Check out the GOP Retreat agenda at PhillyMag.com
(FTLIVE)

Jerrick

Another scary dude in town Bryan Cranston ie Breaking Bad’s Walter White. He’s filming a movie, Untouchable, with Nicole Kidman and Kevin Hart. Remember Friday night Untouchable is filming car chase scenes on JFK and Market Street after 7PM until the wee hours of the morning. What I’ve read said the principle actors aren’t going to be there, but they are in town so I think they might pop in.

Jerrick

Kevin Hart’s been spotting around town. Today he worked out at City Fitness in the Graduate Hospital Area, which ironically no longer has a hospital in the area; last night he was at the Sixers game, with a million of my instagram friends it seems.

1-24-2017 7-35-13 PM (Custom)

It was “M. Night Shyamalan Night,” at the Sixers’ game last night, in honor of his new movie “Split”, which opened last Friday with a stunning box-office comeback, earning $40.2 million over its opening weekend, giving it the No. 1 spot at the box office. That’s more money than “The Sixth Sense” made in its debut weekend ($26.7 million) and marks one of Shyamalan’s best openings — though it doesn’t quite match the impressive $60.1 million “Signs” took in over its 2002 opening weekend. Split stars James McAvoy and my friend in my head Betty Buckley, and filmed in Philly last year. At the Sixers game last night Night rang the Sixers’ ceremonial Liberty Bell. His daughter Saleka sang the National Anthem. Above is his wife, Bhavna Vaswani came out to support. (Thanks Sixers for the photos) BTW Saleka’s quite an artist as well, In the Sixth Sense, the artwork in the book about extraterrestrials was done by her.Jerrick

Philly Gossip: Nicki Minaj & Meek Mill #FakeNews, Vassy Charts, Joe Biden Spotted

Good Friday Philly Gossip Day. I’m away so I thought I’d drop this today and not Sunday. We’ll get back to the regular schedule next week with Sunday and Thursday gossip.
I guess Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill’s gave the people what they wanted and “broke up”, but did they

Mill

Celebrity gossip site MediaTakeOut got tipped that the breakup might have been all staged.

“I don’t think they ever even broke up. Nicki was in the studio all last week and she was texting with [Meek]. He even came by and picked her up,” the anonymous person said. Asked when they got back together, they said, “I don’t know – it’s probably all just [publicity]. I don’t think they ever broke up.”

Laura Burkhardt, Meg Rider, Alex Tewfik, Kevin Sbraga and a few other Make Moves

Laura Burkhardt, Meg Rider, Alex Tewfik, Kevin Sbraga and a few other Make Moves

We’re a day early with our twice weekly Philly Gossip Column (Sunday & Thursday) but a lot of hot is happening:
2017 is turning out to be one of those years where people are making moves, whether it’s Arthur Etchells who left Foobooz last month and headed to Manatawny Still Works as Philadelphia Region Manager,  as written by his former Foobooz intern at Alex Tewfik who later headed to Philly Eater , but has now left Philly Eater, and is rumored to be stepping into Art’s role at Foobooz, full circle complete.

Then there’s

Laura

Laura Burkhardt, longtime publisher at Where Magazine and now heading to Visit Philly at the end of the month to lead the department of Tourism Engagement with a title of VP Visitor Appeal. (Laura is pictured above with her former editor of Where Philadelphia, Kristina Jenkins, who is now editor of UWISHUNU at Visit Philly)

1-17-2017 11-42-19 PM

Also on the move is Visit Philly employee Jim Werner (c), who is being promoted to VP of Hotel Initiatives and Tourism Development at Visit Philly.  I hear Laura and Jim will have offices next to each other and report directly to Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of VISIT PHILADELPHIA. Let the creativity begin….

1-18-2017 12-02-23 AM

A hearty congratulations is in order to Meg Rider, who is the new co-chair of the Board of The William Way LGBT Center.
Meg’s day job is Guest Relations and Volunteer Services Manager at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, and she’s also on the board of Philly AIDS Thrift

Chip Olson, Stephanie Olson and Kevin Sbraga
Michael Klein broke the story yesterday that Kevin Sbraga has closed his namesake restaurant Sbraga at Broad and Lombard, and his other city eatery Fat Ham on Walnut Street (Chef-owner Kevin Sbraga will still run The Fat Ham at KOP Mall with it’s delicious chicken and waffles.) I just saw him on Saturday night at The Lemon Ball and he looked as happy as he always is. In fact he’s slim, slim he should have been included in the People Magazine article last week, which I told you about Monday, where Oprah featured chef’s who lost major LBS. He looks like a million bucks, probably could use a million bucks too as the Philly Mag article by Victor Fiorillo stated that he took a big hit when he closed Juniper Commons in 2015 after 6 months. The Inky’s Craig LaBan torpedoed it in a review, and as this town tends to go, one bell or less can shut a restaurant. Recently Aqimero by Richard Sandoval at The Ritz-Carlton received a bad review and the cleaned house. Of course you can’t get rid of Sandoval, but everyone else is gone including the GM, manager and chef. They have a new Chef de Cuisine and his name is

laura

Paulo Mendoza who hails from San Diego and for the past two years was Chef de Cuisine at Sandoval ‘s Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila Bar. Anywho, last week LaBan skewered Scarpetta and they have already made some serious changes.  A couple of my favorite restaurants have gotten one or less LaBan bells and they seem to still pack them in, Del Frisco’s (LaBan said in his review the only thing Del Frisco’s was missing was a stripper pole. So in his honor they installed one. It’s at the end of the bar near the staircase), Ocean Prime, even the former Haru in Old City hung in there for six years after its 2005 no-bell. The Little Lion occupies that spot now, with their one star, and they’re packed to the rafters. Get the chicken.  OK Back to Kevin Sbraga , at The Lemon Ball Kevin told me that every year he donates a chef’s dinner prepared by him for 6 people. The item was a hot bid again Saturday night, and in the end the auctioneer sold two for $11,000 each. Very nice. I look forward to Kevin Sbraga’s next hot restaurant as well. I’m sure it’s going to be something special.

1-18-2017 2-21-00 AM

If you haven’t read Danya Henninger ‘s article on the food scene (What’s Behind The Sudden Slimming Down of the Food Bloggers), which is a story really about the bloggers who initially started covering food over the passed decade until this year when the last two major players left the field. I feel the beginning of the end started in 2012, which was when Drew Lazor left City Paper’s Meal Ticket. For me it was a great time, as I started my blog in 2007, just when the food scene started to take off, when celebrity chefs meant something, and food was just starting to move away from meat and potatoes. I didn’t set out to cover food, but I definitely wanted to cover the folks that did cover the food. On more than one occasion I was invited into their inner sanctuary to break bread; it was great.  (One of my fav old school food blog events with some of the beginners)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

PS Tomorrow I am heading to Florida for a few days. I have pre-posted for the rest of the week, but if I miss something current that I normally would cover, it won’t be here. I’ll have a lot of palm trees and sunshine on my social media though. Best wishes, HughE

Photo: Taylor Kinney and South Philly Girlfriend Alanna DiGiovanni, The Union League Steps & Kristen Welker

Taylor Kinney with South Philly Girlfriend Alanna DiGiovanni Photo Emerges, Loving,

Happy Thursday Afternoon, and welcome to another edition of Philly Gossip. Since I posted the Page Six article yesterday on all my social media about Lady Gaga’s ex-fiancé Taylor Kinney and his “new” girlfriend, South Philly’s Alanna DiGiovanni, I’ve been bombarded with photos and stories from people who know her. A lot of people tell me she’s a home town girl, close to her family, super nice and everyone said she’s a good friend.  First I said she was a radiologist, wrong, that’s a doctor my readers tell me. She actually works in radiology. OK
(Don’t try and look for her on Social Media, she’s completely deleted her online life, even her 2nd name which was still active over the weekend as i found her friends tagging her in photos.)

Taylor

They also tell me Taylor and her are just friends. They met last July 2015, when Taylor and Lady Gaga were in AC for a Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett concert. Taylor and Alanna began
following each other on instagram and kept in touch that way. At some point they began seeing each other in person. Last weekend Taylor, and a friend, and Alanna and her friend went to Austin, Texas, together to attend the Formula One race and Taylor Swift concert where the above photograph was taken. That’s Taylor and Alanna on the left. She kinda looks like Lady Gaga. BTW I bought Joanne, and I LOVE IT. It’s a different genre of singing, but it’s deep and compassionate. The Daily Mail reports that Lady Gaga and Taylor are working to get back together, and I hope that is true. None of the other photos indicate that the Taylor/Alanna friendship is anymore than that, even though it is a bit odd that he’s hanging out with a gal he met at a club last summer, shortly after he broke off his engagement to a gal he was in love with for 5 years.

Taylor

My friend at the Union League tells me they caught the guy who broke the Union League steps at the junk yard. The 6 foot piece of brass would only have
brought in $40 because it was hollow, plus there was concrete inside which was there to make it more durable in case people sat on it. Can you imagine
how heavy it was to carry. Sadly the steps will cost $100ks to fix, and it’ll take time, at least until spring of 2017. BUT there will be celebrations and dedications when it
comes time to unveil the brand new railing and brand new pictures .

Taylor

Congrats to Philly’s Kristen Welker, she’s from my neighborhood Fairmount.

In 1967, Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred (Ruth Negga) Loving took their case to the Supreme Court after violating a Virginia law that prohibits interracial marriage. The movie on their battle opens next Friday, November 4.

Speaking of Fairmount, what are you and the kids doing this weekend?

Brooke Thomas, Sharon Reed, Nefertiti Jáquez, & Lori Wilson, Rarest First Look – a.lounge Opens, Jon Dorenbos’ Engaged

Philly Gossip: Brooke Thomas, Sharon Reed, & Nefertiti Jáquez, Lori Wilson, Rarest First Look, Dorenbos Engaged

Good Sunday Morning. WOW it’s winter finally. I’m happy, don’t get me wrong I love warm weather, until I discovered how hot it can get in one’s concrete walled apartment. There’s an ordinance in Philly that after October 1, all apartment buildings in Philadelphia have to provide heat to their tenants if they don’t have individual units, and it can’t be turned off til May 1 (meaning the AC and heater use the same HVAC system. You’re either getting heat or AC.) There’s no provision for global warming as the law was written in the 1940’s. Councilman Greenly told my neighbor that it’d have to go before City Council to change and he just didn’t see that ever happening. Any who my apartment has cooled down from the high of 85 it was maintaining for 4 days. Now I have some cool gossip for you….

Brooke

Rarest (834 Chestnut Street)  Chef Anthony Marini, winner of CNBC’s hit show Restaurant Startup, tells me that the restaurant should be open on November 1. Marini, who I met about 3 months ago when I was at the AKA shooting the Equity movie screening party, tells me that the restaurant is going for the unpretentious, inviting vibe. The price point is on point, and people will be quite pleased with the unique menu of well prepared and curated traditional small and large plates. Plus the raw bar which will feature crudos, ceviches, and tartars as well as cured seafood, American cured hams, and artisan cheeses.

Brooke
In the lobby of the AKA Washington Square is a.lounge.

There’s live music four nights a week in the grand lobby, curated by Eddie Bruce. Wednesday nights highlight a pianist from 5pm – 8pm. Thursday nights feature a pianist at 5pm, and Bob Egan’s Piano Bar goes on at 7:30pm to play the resident’s favorite requests. Friday nights begin with a pianist at 5pm, and then the Shayne Frederick Trio perform at 7:30pm. The Ella Gahnt Quartet entertains residents on Saturday evenings from 7:30pm – 10:30pm
(I was there again on Thursday night for the opening party for the Phila Film Festival, which runs until Oct 30

Brooke

On the same day Brooke Thomas was released from CBS3, she was named one of the baddest anchorbaes in the USA by Bossip. Also on the list, and serious bad baes
who once graced Philly’s anchor desks – Sharon Reed, Brittney Shipp & Nefertiti Jáquez. And bad bae on air in Philly Alex Holley, Fox 29 (Bossip)

Brooke

Speaking of anchorbaes, former NBC10 anchor Lori Wilson got married earlier this month, (Oct 9) to Dr. Tiy-E Muhammad “The Love Doctor”. Seems the doctor counsels couples on love; he has published several books, and is an alumni of the reality TV shows The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Real Gilligan’s Island. I love Lori Wilson, miss her infectious smile, and am happy for her. Congrats you two love birds. Here’s how they met according to their wedding page.

Once Upon A Time… Long, long… really long ago…

A man met a woman at a Step show on the campus of Morehouse College in Atlanta. The man and woman were attracted to each other right away. They dated. He moved out west. She moved out East. After years of not seeing each other, or even keeping in touch, one day, her best friend suggested they reconnect. She flew to see him. He flew to see her. He flew to Africa, came back to the US and proposed. She said YES! Woot-woot!

10-22-2016-1-25-23-am-custom

Congrats to Jon Dorenbos and Ananlise Dale on their engagement. The duo met in Las Vegas in 2015, and have been inseparable ever since.  They’ve been engaged for about
two weeks, and haven’t set a wedding date yet. Their schedules have been jam packed between Jon’s appearances America’s Got Talent and his job as long snapper for
the Philadelphia Eagles.  Jon told me he’ll be really busy on the off season as his appearance on AGT and last weeks appearance on the Ellen Show has opened up a lot of doors and stages for him. Next up though is the Malcolm Jenkin’s 3rd Annual Blitz Bow Ties & Bourbon Monday, October 24, 2016

Brooke

Spotted at Matt and Maries (100 N 18th St) – Phillies Ryan Howard stopped in for lunch on Friday.

Philly Gossip: Sylva Senat Top Chef, Sets Date For Restaurant Opening, Murals Frankie Avalon, John Mellencamp

Good Sunday, what a gorgeous day out. I hope you all get out and enjoy, I hope you get to spend time with your friends, family and those you love. Last night I went to #PhillyFightsCancer a fundraiser for The Abramson Cancer Center. It was an amazing event and tomorrow I’ll have photos in PhillyMag.com and PhillyMetro.com. People are really generous with their time and money in order to help other people. What a blessing. Philadelphia, wow what a place to live, or visit. Over the last decade it’s just gotten so attractive. Thanks Ed Rendell. I really believe it started with him, and people he put in place to execute the vision. With each administration after him they fulfilled this legacy. I’m not saying we don’t have problems, we do, but the vision of making Philadelphia a 7/24 city is at our doorstep. I’m so excited AC Moore is coming. People wrote me this week and were disappointed on that choice, but what do they want. Trust me the real estate peeps and building owners have aggressively tried to get Bed, Bath & Beyond, The Container Store, even Restoration Hardware to come into the bigger spaces, but to no avail. The Post Brothers tried very hard to get Restoration Hardware into the old Avenue A/Ted Montana space, but RH didn’t feel like the “loading dock” was big enough. And that’s in quotes cause there’s barely a loading dock. As for FYE, the powers to be really wanted a Bed, Bath & Beyond, but AC Moore came in with a higher bid. Go to Target get your bath supplies, meet me later at AC Moore as I’ll be in the art supply section; plus they have art classes for the very novice, oh and DIY crafty classes. That’s a win. Another thing who would have thought a Whole Foods would excited a City. WOW, go see it. It’s beautiful, and innovated. OK onto what’s gossipy this week. PS This next story is a good example of one I held back last Thursday. I spoke with Sylva Senat at &Pizza on Wednesday night. I had two big stories, the AC Moore story, and what the chef told me. I decided to split them. Later that day the big Senat story broke by Molly Eichel, I’ll link it below. Even if you are working on something, it’s ok and nice if you acknowledge when someone else publishes it first, even just online. It doesn’t have to be acknowledge in print since print is king. I first saw the story in PhillyMag, but I did an internet research and saw Molly wrote it the day before. So that’s who gets credit. PSS It’s sure nice that last week the Inky and Daily News gave me credit for the timeline of the Geno’s “No English” sign along with Billy Penn’s story. And thanks to Phila Biz Journal and Philly Voice for giving me the credit for the AC Moore story. I’m just a little blog and links help for SEO, especially since I just re-did my site.

I ran into former-Tashan head man, now Dos Tacos, Chef Sylva Senat at &Pizza on Wednesday night. I barely recognized him, and he told me he cut off his trade mark dreads as he embarked on a new projects and decided to make the change.  Up next for him he’s excited for his new eatery  Maison 208 208 S 13th St where the long defunct Letto Cafe was located.   Across the street is another popular eatery, Indeblue: Indian Restaurant.  Senat tells me Maison 208 ( 208 S 13th St) he’s aiming for the first week in December, hopefully just in time for his appearance in the 14th season of Top Chef, premiering at 10 p.m. Dec. 1 on Bravo.

As Molly notes, he did tell me he was relinquishing his part in Dos Taco’s, that really was just a stint to buy time between restaurant gigs. The other owner of Dos Taco’s Ryan Dorsey, who is heading the promotion crew at NOTO, short for “Not of the Ordinary, the new nightclub in the Loft District.

You might recall Maison 208 was under construction last year, and was burned down and this Wellness Mural designed by James Burns was destroyed as well, by a disgruntled contractor. Down but not out, Senat came back even stronger. The restaurant is nearly rebuilt,
changed the design of the interior, the mural is on it’s way to being restored and this time Senat tells me, it’s going to “continue” into the restaurant on the wall.

So bummed I wasn’t feeling well to make it to this event. I think as soon as I’m well I’m going to get that flu shot. Congrats to Shelley on her new position at WHYY. You’ll remember when she won an Emmy a few weeks ago, in her speech she said if anyone was looking for an Emmy award winning
producer she was available. It’s all about connections and being at the right place at the right time.

Have an awesome day. HughE
