This Is Us Films in Philly; Queer Eye Guy and Jason Segal Spotted – Yes they’re still here!!

Hey readers, you’re used to me doing my gossip column on Sunday’s but I’ve been slammed with work so I’m going to give you a whole bunch of chitchat to love today.

Unless you live under a rock, you at least know about the huge hit on NBC >> This is Us, which tells the story of the Pearson family in present, future and past tense, a momentous feat and great character development way to tell a story. The series is based in Pittsburgh where the main characters and their parents were born and raised. As adults, Kate lives in Los Angeles, Randall and his family are in New Jersey (and later Philadelphia) Kevin relocates from Los Angeles to New York City and back again.

Last year ‘This Is Us’ filmed scenes with Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin Pearson, at WHYY studios with Terry Gross. He was being interviewed by Gross. Here are a few of my photos from the shoot in the Inky last year. Well they’re back again this year to film a few scenes, but this time because one of the Pearsons moves to town. On Sunday (I tweeted on Sunday how sad I was to miss shooting them, but I was going to the Eagles game!!) but on Monday I was able to shoot them as they filmed scenes which will be shown in the 4th season which debuts Tuesday, September 24th on NBC. The first episode will likely kick off with The Big Three’s birthday says Good Housekeeping (just as it has in prior seasons) SPOILER ALERT, if you don’t want to know where and what Randall Pearson’s family does next, don’t read any further.

One of the biggest spoiler alerts was watching the trailer for the upcoming season. So many intriguing stories, and say what M. Night Shyamalan is joining the cast? I think I know why, and if you want to know click on the YouTube link as someone chitchats about it in the comments. OK let’s see what happened when This is Us came to town to film Sunday & Monday.

Randall Peason’s family is moving to Philadelphia, which we found out last season when Randall won a City Council seat in our City in the 12th District. (It’s a fictional show, just like Philly having a 12th District, we only have 10) The 12th District, where Randall lives, seems to be the Spring Garden area as that is where they filmed on Sunday, primarily in the 2000 block of Spring Garden. The entire family of actors Sterling K. Brown and Susan Kelechi with their TV kids were spotted walking along Spring Garden Street. Then filming at the Philadelphia Art Museum early Monday morning they were there as well. At one point as noted by Chef Cherryl reports Randall Pearson runs up the Rocky Stairs, which is a regular exercise routine in Philly. In this photo you can also see the Pearson family in pink and green. Philly we’re gonna have a whole new bunch of fans to see the Philadelphia Art Museum and Rocky Steps.

Monday afternoon Lyric Ross, who plays Déjà , a foster kid who was taken in by Randall and Beth Pearson, filmed on South Street. First near the Headhouse on 2nd Street. Then she and her friend grabbed a Rita’s Gelato in the 300 block of South Street, before heading to the Magic Garden at 10th and South. The scene looks to be a fall after school moment as both kids in the scene are wearing warm clothing, and carrying backpacks, but as a Philadelphian every season is the perfect season for a Rita’s treat. (I was kinda bummed I didn’t have my long lens when I got the tip about This is Us filming on South Street, as I was returning from Dr J’s Golf Classic in Atlantic City and I didn’t need it. But still happy about these shots.

UPDATE: WXTU’s Nicole Michalik (3pm to 7PM) has a story on their website about Sterling K Brown at the Art Museum and how this photo came about. Head on over to WXTU

Thanks Leah Ben who tipped me off to Bobby Berk, the interior guy from Queer Eye, filming a Rachel Ray segment at Washington Square last week. The guys are nearly done filming the season 5 of the popular Netflix series.

Actory/Director/Writer Jason Segel who’s been working on the AMC TV series Dispatches From Elsewhere has been filming all over town, and in the burbs. One of them more interesting shoots occurred at the Tower Theater right before Labor Day. An overnight shoot had an audience who was listening to cult leader Octavio eschew his spiel, combat protestors with nerf objects. I hear it was a wild shoot. This series shoots here through November. It premieres on AMC TV in the first quarter of 2020. Jason Segal was roaming around Old City, which seems to be the hot spot to live while filming in Philly, the Queer Eye guys are always spotted in the area as well, anyway Jason stopped in everyone’s favorite women’s shop The Geisha House 149 N 3rd St. Later this week I’ll write about my first trip to see the Eagles play at the Linc, I hear I’m a good luck charm now. #comebackkid; also the 2nd half of my LBWkdn trip, Dr. J Gala & Golf, and more PhillyGossip. Have a great day!!

We hardly knew you, Frankie Ann’s, formerly Rembrant’s in Fairmount has closed. The eatery located at 741 N. 23rd St. was open just about a year, but never took hold. Recently they filed for a variance to have a roof deck and faced opposition from the neighborhood.

But that wasn’t their only problem, their food was never above bar standard. I had the worse nachos in my life there last month. Marilyn and I were just shocked, as we’re big nacho fans. I didn’t post it because I could tell they were hurting, and didn’t want to be the last person to put a nail in the coffin. I had met the owner last year and he was super nice guy, plus he named the place after his wife, I really wanted it to succeed, but you have to have good food. We now have two iconic Fairmount restaurants looking for new operators – The London Grill and the former Rembrandt’s.

I always tell my readers if they want to meet new people to check out a meetup.com group of their interest. It’s a no pressure way to meet people, folks who have similar interests as you, maybe a future BFF or spouse. I went to the Fairmount Photo Club on Saturday. I learned a few things, you don’t have to be from Fairmount, there were people from all over Philly, the burbs and even SNJ there. Plus you don’t have to own a camera, some people used their phones, like the guy there 2nd from the right. So join us next time of check out one of the other 1000s of groups to find your interest.

Monday a new advertiser started with PhillyChitChat – Maria Quattrone, real estate expert CEO of RE/MAX @ HOME – Philadelphia. Check out this featured listing at 730 Fitzwater.

Ghetto Cowboy starring the sexist man alive – Idris Elba – will begin filming in North Philly in August for a month. They’re looking for cast and crew.
Grab an August issue of Vanity Fair as Idris Elba is on the cover, with a great story inside to familiar your self with the man.

I caught Patti LaBelle at Parx Casino’s Xcite Center on Friday. She was flawless as can be, performing a 90 minute set on stage as if she were 40 years younger. The godmother of soul is 75 years young she told the crowd. Have you been to the Xcite Center yet. It’s an intimate setting with about 5,000 comfortable seats, everyone with a decent view. There are still tickets left for Cheech & Chong, Air Supply, JB Smooth and Jethro Tull.

Happy Monday, I know no one is really happy on Monday. I usually publish this on Sunday, but I slept til noon after the Ball Saturday night and well here we are. Check out Philly Mag and Metro today for pixs from the Ball.  Here’s something to put a smile on your face – Philly Gossip Monday: Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman & Bryan Cranston Spotted, Malcolm Jenkins, Meek Mills and More.

Hart

Yeah Phillywood has kicked off. Friday Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman were in Philly for a table reading of the new Neil Berger movie “Intouchable” which I mentioned a few weeks ago would
be filming in Philadelphia. Friday evening car scenes were filmed in Center City, but the principles weren’t involved.  Cranston and Kidman flew out to prepare for the Screen Actors Guild Award Awards last night. Kidman presented, and Cranston won for his performance in “All the Way. Be on the look out for them for the next 4 weeks and drop me a line if you see they, especially if you have a picture with them.

Since Nicki Minaj dumped Meek Mills, his new Sixers seatmate looks to be Kevin Hart. Let’s keep it that way cause nearly every game Kevin Hart has attended the Sixers have won.  Also spotted at the game
was Allen Iverson, M. Night Shyamalan, who’s on quite a winning streak himself as his newest movie, the psychological thriller Split, was the No. 1 movie again at the US box office this weekend, holding on to the top spot for a second week running. It’s now made $78 million domestically and $24 million internationally, pushing its worldwide total above $100 million. (I think I’m going to see it tonight at The Roxy)

Thanks to Men’s Wearhouse for dressing me for the 160th Academy Concert and Ball this past weekend, and for giving my readers $40 off their rentals.
Thanks to my Instagram followers for all the love.
It was an awesome time, and my tux fit perfectly, the first time in the 6 years I’ve gone. I had no idea Men’s Wearhouse rented tuxes, let alone White Tails. I did know
they had great suits, and men’s clothing. They have a Big & Tall section as well. Go check them out at

Harry Potter Spin-Off to be Filmed in Philadelphia

This past week I had been hearing rumors ie my google alerts have been blowing up, that the Harry Potter Spin-Off “Quidditch Through The Ages” was to be Filmed in Philadelphia.

Quidditch is a competitive sport in the Wizarding World of the Harry Potter universe, featured in the series of novels and movies.

I saw a posting about it on FB from a friend who lived in Chestnut Hill. I thought could it be that J. K. Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter series, had heard about Chestnut Hill’s very popular Harry Potter Festival Weekend which occurs every fall in the leafy neighborhood.

courtesy of Chestnut Hill Business Association

Had she heard about the Mid-Atlantic, round robin “muggle” Quidditch tournament held at Chestnut Hill College. Had she heard that this year Chestnut Hill College will host its Fifth Annual Harry Potter Conference
in October 2016. The Harry Potter Conference is an annual,
interdisciplinary academic conference held at Chestnut Hill College that
provides a forum for scholarly presentations arising out of J.K.
Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Maybe they would film then.

I found a news article on March 18 with the Harry Potter rumor from KSP33 News –
A new Harry Potter spin-off film tentatively entitled “Quidditch Through the Ages,” based on J.K. Rowling’s spin-off novel of the same name is reportedly in the early stages of pre-production and a significant portion of it will be filmed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Details of the film are understandably tight-lipped at this point but insider sources claim that it centers around the Quidditch World Cup which will take place in Philadelphia.
Quidditch, a sport popular among wizards and witches, was a key element of the novels but was significantly cut from the Harry Potter films.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are reprising their roles for the upcoming film as are a number of others from the Harry Potter series.  “Quidditch Through the Ages” will be the next spin-off after 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” but it will be the first spin-off to have much of the original cast. But then my hopes were dashed when I found another story floating around on a site called Local News 33
A new Harry Potter spin-off film tentatively entitled “Quidditch Through the Ages,” based on J.K. Rowling’s spin-off novel of the same name is reportedly in the early stages of pre-production and a significant portion of it will be filmed in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.  Details of the film are understandably tight-lipped at this point but insider sources claim that it centers around the Quidditch World Cup which will take place in Charlotte.

Then the O’Reilly Post’s title said:

Harry Potter Spin-Off to be Partly Filmed in Kansas City

Is this an early April Fools Day Joke? Ugh I have Harry Potter mad click rage….Does anyone know the real story? I hope there’s an inkling of truth, maybe there are going to film it in all the cities?

Breaking Good: Another Movie on Tap for the Summer with Anna Gunn, #OITNB Alysia Reiner and Sarah Megan Thomas

Yesterday I broke the news on PhillyChitChat that a new movie would be filming in Philadelphia this summer:

Otto Bathurst is directing indie movie “Three Seconds”, which stars Luke Evans and David Oyelowo, as well as Oscar nominees Josh Brolin and Maggie Gyllenhaal and “The Newsroom’s” Olivia Munn. Three Seconds will film mostly in the Sun City Studios in West Chester, but no doubt the cast will be spending a lot of time in Center City. While researching that tip last week I uncovered another film that will be shooting in Center City, another all star cast called “Equity.”
Broad Street Pictures – “Equity” – sizzle reel from Jean Pesce on Vimeo.
EQUITY, the first female-driven Wall Street film (yes it’s set in NYC, but it’s filming in Philly!! PS Three Seconds, also set in NYC, but it’s Filming in Philly!! Kinda makes up for that Brad Pitt movie which filmed in  Glasgow and Budapest), follows a senior investment banker who is threatened by a financial scandal and must untangle a web of corruption. The Film is produced by Broad Street Productions, which was founded by #OITNB Alysia Reiner and Sarah Megan Thomas (She produced and starred in the movie Backwards with James van der Beek [some of my pixs from movie set] which was also filmed in Philly, Thanks Sarah!! ), both of who will star in the movie as well as just announced today Anna Gunn, from Breaking Bad.

OMG, you know I was taking a break from my columns and Fox TV segments, but looks like that’s not going to happen.

I see Alysia Reiner is settling in nicely, she hit Cross Fit in South Philly with Eco friendly Paige Wolf. Last year Alysia was set to appear at Paige’s client (which I photograph) “Career Wardrobe’s Tea Party” but at the last minute had to pull out when OITNB was picked up for a 3rd season and she had to film. So it’s exciting that I might get a chance to meet her at sometime, hint, hint.
When I did research for the movie, I did find that the Philly Voice actually wrote about the movie all the way back in May, sans Anna Gunn. The article by Brandon Baker is chock full of good stuff, except the film dates which were changed. They are July 18 through August 13. Oh My summer is going to go by quickly. Check out Brandon’s article HERE
