Sinking Springs films, Spotted: Ridley Scott, Tara Lipinski and Jason Kelce

Tuesday night @jason.kelce and his very pregnant wife Kylie, dined @mikesolomonov @zahavrestaurant with another couple. When he walked in the servers and diners clapped as he was led to his table. He acknowledged the appreciation, then enjoyed dinner uninterrupted. I wrote on my Instagram last night. (I love when I hear about these heartwarming moments, thanks to a reader) Later I learned …

He did pose with one of his favorite chefs, Michael Solomonov who reminded his readers about Underdogs, Jason’s clothing line, where the proceeds go to the BePhillyFoundation

Oatly Launches Plant-Based Cream Cheese with Philadelphian Tara Lipinski. Oatly, the world’s original and largest oatmilk company, unveiled their new plant-based cream cheese invented in Philadelphia by mostly Philadelphia-based food scientists with Philadelphia native and Olympian Tara Lipinski. As part of this pre-launch release, Oatly has partnered with local Philadelphia bagel chains Spread Bagelry and Philly Bagels, who are now serving Oatly’s Philadelphia-invented cream cheese today through March 31st (or until supplies last). No doubt they launched in Philly because where else, the staple Philadelphia Cream Cheese is so synonymous with our City, but they say it’s “this is the first time Oatly has embarked on a limited pre-launch strategy in one particular city. The hope is that Philadelphians adopt Oatly’s cream cheese the same way they’ve adopted other hometown staples like greased street poles, Gritty and the 2006 film Invincible.

Filming of Sinking Springs continues tonight on 2nd Street in Old City.

I mentioned last year that Ridley Scott would be filming his Apple TV Series “Sinking Springs” in the beginning of February, and he did, turning University City into PhillyWood for a week starting on February 7.

“Sinking Spring” is a crime drama series, that stars Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry and “Better Call Saul” star Michael Mando as long-time friends posing as DEA agents and robbing a seemingly normal country house in the small town of Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. They unwittingly get caught up in a major crime operation.

The cast also includes Marin Ireland, from Amazon’s “Sneaky Pete” and Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy”; and Kate Mulgrew from Netflix’s “Orange Is The New Black.”

I have a busy night tonight, but I am going to try and capture some of the action in Old City tonight. It’s an over night shoot, normally I would scout out a location to spend the night, but I am shooting the Philly Home Show at 8AM so I can’t do that like I did for 21 Bridges hiding, er I mean scouting out from the 2nd floor window of Unite Fitness.

According to the Apple Insider: The most interesting thing about the series so far is its massive budget – the pilot episode alone cost over $50 million. That is almost as much as the budget of the entire first season of Game of Thrones! Season 1 of the HBO hit cost around $50-60 million, which breaks down to $5-6 million per episode. The pilot episode was filmed for two weeks in Bucks County according to Levittown Now, the money was used to rent out an entire town including the police force, fire department. According to World of Reel, that $50 million went on two weeks of shooting. Apple is said to have rented out a whole town, including hiring its police and fire department, and to have blown up a house.

If you capture any photos, send them to us at hughe@phillychitchat.com and we will publish them. I love car chases, and no doubt this one is going to be a fun one. BTW roads are closed in the area, and bus routes are re routed. Check with Septa for Info.

What’s Filming in Center City…

What is Filming in Center City?

Yesterday I got lots of questions about what was filming on Broad Street.

It’s @appletv movie about the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. It is called Manhunt; (sometimes you’ll see signs that say PAX. That threw me off at First. But I walked around the block and peered into windows of vehicles. Cause that’s what we do here at Phillychitchat, we turn every stone over until we’re satisfied) filming through July 2 at the Miller theater formally known as the Marian theater @kimmelculturalcampus I went by last night around 10PM and saw a lot of extras mingling about outside in black period piece clothing.

“Manhunt” is a true crime series based on the events of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” by James Swanson. Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s War Secretary and friend, who was driven nearly to madness by the need to catch Booth (Boyle) and to carry out Lincoln’s legacy. (source)

Stars: Tobias Menzies, Brandon Flynn, Betty Gabriel, Patton Oswalt, Lulu Taylor, Matt Walsh.

Earlier this week they filmed overnight in Fairmount Park. I hear they build a brick house for the filming.

PhillyFact: Abraham Lincoln’s hearse made its way down Broad Street passed this spot 4/22/1865

Tobias Harris with Adam Sandler on Set of Rebounds. It’s Always Sunny Films on Location; Geno’s Re Opens

Justin Moore, general manager of Rivers Casino Philadelphia, Geno Vento and Whizzy cut the ribbon at the re opening of Geno’s Steaks at Rivers Casino

Congratulations to my buddy Geno Vento on the reopening of his Geno’s Steaks eatery at Rivers Casino, which had closed during the pandemic.

Guests started lining up early for the reopening as the first 100 folks received a free cheese steak and Geno swag.

Adam Sandler and LeBron James Hustle has hustled back into town to film the remaining scenes which weren’t completed last fall because of Covid19. Thanks to Diego Ramos for sending me two videos of the film set with Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah, who plays his wife. Filming took place on Thursday in South Philly on a very hot basketball court.

Tobias Harris was spotted in this scene, that’s Adam Sandler in the yellow shirt patting him on the back. Head to Reddit for more on the scenes filmed in South Philly.

According to IMDB the Netflik series is still titled Hustle, but sources tell me it might be renamed Rebounds. I kinda like that name better too. The show is about a sports agent looking to re start his career, or rebound back into business, get it. Plus you know it’s a basketball movie.

Friday Hustle/Rebound took over Ray’s Happy Birthday bar for a scene at the iconic South Philly spot. Also Sandler shoot a scene at the basketball court at 9th and Federal. Thanks to all my tipsters for tips, and videos. The 9th Street scene can be scene on my instagram. More chitchat on which sixers are appearing in the movie HERE

Wait It’s Always Sunny hasn’t filmed in Philly for 5 years, but it’s filmed in Ireland twice since it was last here in 2016?

More surprising news Creed III is not filming in Philly, it’s filming in Atlanta. Good news for Michael B Jordan, he’s staring and will be directing the Rocky franchise movie, but Sly doesn’t appear in this sequel, although Tessa Thompson is back as his wife. READ all About it. We’ll miss you buddy. You were fun to photograph. I am away for a week, but keep sending me those tips I really appreciate it, we all appreciate it being in the know. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy follow me on Social Media as I will be sharing my trip there. I will have two more posts this week which I prepared.

Michael Jordan Down The Shore Spotted Wearing … Shazam Films in Philly

(Sorry to my readers I was MIA for a few days, I was at the beach with friends and family, in Margate, Ventnor and Longport, then I went to a hospitality conference. More on that later this week.)
Basketball legend Michael Jordan is down the shore this week. In recent years he’s become quite the legend in sports fishing, having won million dollar tournaments, which brings him to AC this week as he’s participating in the Jimmy Johnson A.C. Championship Fishing Week July 12-17, 2021. Winner gets a ring as well. His boat, the 8o foot Viking Catch 23 is parked at the Golden Nugget marina. (Sean Brace)

He’s staying at the Borgata. No word on if he’s tried the new restaurant the American Bar & Grille, it’s delicious!! BTW he puts his money where is mouth is, he was spotted by wearing Air Jordan 1 Low x Travis Scott (Thanks for tagging me @afeldz)

Thanks to my reader who sent me the video. Ironically I had just met him at a Scott O’Neil book signing at Fitler Club a few weeks ago, and he introduced himself. He didn’t even post it himself. So grateful I got to share it with everyone. Wow word really got out in the small town of Margate, the Wawa was bike free for about an hour. How about Jordan accepting a cigar from a fan, that was trusting. What’s happening with Margate, first Joel Embiid spends June there with his fiance and baby, now Jordan. It is the hot spot. Glad to see Jordan could snag a reservation at the popular Steve & Cookie’s, it’s fairly booked up for the summer. Wonder if he had the ugly tomato salad? Now who’s going to get me a photo or video of Tom Brady, rumor has it he’s fishing in this tournament too. (Speaking of Wawa, an anonymous reader told me George Conway [Kellyanne’s husband} was spotted at Club Wa over the weekend, Club Wa I hear is the nickname parents gave the Wawa on Washington Ave in Margate, where all their kids hang out.)

Updated, someone sent me a photo of his plane. How cool is this…

Philly Wood still going strong. Last week I mentioned Shazam was in town looking for extras for a few scenes they were filming for the sequel. The movie is set in Philly, but strangely films in Toronto. I caught them the last time they filmed in town for the original HERE. Anyway. thanks to a reader who tipped me off to a low flying helicopter near Columbus Park in South Philly.

I was on East Passyunk in my car wondering where I should grab dinner when I got her text. I had seen the low flying helicopter my self so when she text and thought there was some kinda news happening , it wasn’t that far for me to go check out myself. She was right, it was newsworthy. It was movie news. Lucky for me I ran into a few readers who filled me in that they had gotten notices that Shazam would be filming in the park that day.

I was going to go back at night for the filming, but caught the same helicopter filming exteriors on the Parkway. No word on whether they were filming on the Art Museum Steps, there was a storm brewing. Guess these folds were on a tight schedule cause they filmed despite the electrical storm nearby.

Surprised to see Fox & The Hound close. They made it all the way through the pandemic. I just stopped in about a month ago to grab a burger and they were open. Thanks to Mike Saks who tipped me off to this on Sunday (he’s great, he’s getting ready for the Broad Street Run and gets all the scoops as he trains), but I was away. PHL Business Journal mentioned that the restaurant is no longer listed at a location on the parent companies website. I think it’s time we get a Chickie & Pete’s in town!! Have a great day, thanks again to all my readers for the tips, you make Philly Chit Chat fun. Thanks also for allowing me to pass them on to Fox29 and CBSPhilly…. July is my 10th Anniversary with Fox29!!

PhillyWood: Spotted Adam Sandler, M. Night Shyamalan, Kate Winslet

It was a beautiful week to play hooky and steal a few hours at the beach. On Monday I announced I was back open for business, and it went very well. I immediately was hired to shoot two events last week, with three events coming up this week and an event next week. Several people are interesting in advertising and promotion of products. I’m excited to be back. Guess who else is back to work… SUBSCRIBE TO PHILLY CHIT CHAT left hand corner.

You might have heard Adam Sandler is set to star in Hustle, a basketball-themed Netflix movie involving the NBA that hails from producer LeBron James. The film began pre production last week and would be the first major production scheduled to shoot in Philadelphia since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Directing the Taylor Materne and Will Fetters film is local Jeremiah Zagar. James and Maverick Carter are set to produce under their Springhill Entertainment banner along with Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Zack Roth of Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, as well as Sandler and his Happy Madison banner. Jamal Henderson and Spencer Beighley of Springhill will serve as executive producers. (Source) Well Adam Sandler was spotted dining outside with a few folks at Chefs Jeff Michaud and Michael Schulson Osteria on Thursday night. UPDATE: Adam Sandler spotted in Philadelphia again 10/1 (Kate Winslett, and Megan Stallion too) Check out where HERE

No doubt another spot he’ll go to is Schulson’s Elbow Lane, a popular sports and celebrity hang out which opens this week for private events. Ben Simmons and Kendall Jenner spent many a night bowling with friends here. Take me back to those days.

Actress Kate Winslet (a pic I shot in NYC) is expected to return to our area this week to finish filming her HBO series, “Mare of Easttown,” which was closed down due to the pandemic in the Spring. Filming will continue in the Aston, area which is where I took the photo on the right. The story is about a small-town Pennsylvania detective (Kate Winslet) who investigates a local murder, while her life is in shambles. It also stars Julianne Nicholson , Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, and David Denman. If you see them, send me a note. HughE@phillychitchat.com If you want credit I’d be happy to give it to you with a link to your SM or business. Thanks. Everything I’ve written about Kate & the movie here.

Earlier this month Apple TV’s series Servant the American psychological horror web television series created and written by Tony Basgallop, who also executive produced alongside M. Night Shyamalan and was filmed in Philly last year and earlier this year, started production again on the second season. After a successful first run, the show, which follows Dorothy and Sean Turner, a Philadelphia couple was picked up for a 2nd, but now Night’s hinted at a 3rd and 4th season on his SM. Stopped after filming 6 episodes because of COVID19 back in March, the cast and crew flew into Philly to continue the shoot earlier this month.

After 14 days of quarantining, filming resumed at a DELCO studio which Shyamalan built in an office complex, especially for the series with a complete replica of the 2100 block of Spruce Street in Philadelphia, where the Turner’s live. For season two Shyamalan only directs one episode and is the only male director and one of the only directors with TV experience. Both producers wanted to change up the direction and give the series a new voice, so they enlisted first-time TV directors, filmmakers Julia Ducournau (Raw) and Isabella Eklöf (Holiday), in season two as well. (THR)

Confident that Servant is in good hands, freed M. Night Shyamalan to begin work on his new project, a movie titled OLD. (Can we talk, to borrow that line from dear Joan Rivers, how crazy Night released the title to the movie, it’s very unusual for him as he normally has “working titles” when filming his projects, for example Servant’s alias was “CRUMPET” during production.) Seems Night has flown out of the country to begin post production on the new mysterious film, but I love the hour glass with people as the sand. The release date is less than a year away. Can’t wait. Thanks to Sharon Pinkenson and her team at GPFO for their continued work on bringing these productions to our area. Hope you all have an awesome day. See you on Social Media, and back here Tuesday.
