Adam Sandler and LeBron James Hustle has hustled back into town to film the remaining scenes which weren’t completed last fall because of Covid19. Thanks to Diego Ramos for sending me two videos of the film set with Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah, who plays his wife. Filming took place on Thursday in South Philly on a very hot basketball court.
Tobias Harris was spotted in this scene, that’s Adam Sandler in the yellow shirt patting him on the back. Head to Reddit for more on the scenes filmed in South Philly.
According to IMDB the Netflik series is still titled Hustle, but sources tell me it might be renamed Rebounds. I kinda like that name better too. The show is about a sports agent looking to re start his career, or rebound back into business, get it. Plus you know it’s a basketball movie.
Friday Hustle/Rebound took over Ray’s Happy Birthday bar for a scene at the iconic South Philly spot. Also Sandler shoot a scene at the basketball court at 9th and Federal. More surprising news Creed III is not filming in Philly, it’s filming in Atlanta. Good news for Michael B Jordan, he’s staring and will be directing the Rocky franchise movie, but Sly doesn’t appear in this sequel, although Tessa Thompson is back as his wife. READ all About it. After pausing for a few months because of the pandemic , the AppleTV series Servant resumed filming in July, according to a Tweet by M Night in July. The filming wrapped last month and Night headed to the Caribbean to film his next movie, OLD as I wrote. BUT it looks like the production has returned to film an additional scene. A winter wonderland, Christmas scene. A reader @ryan_wonderwall tagged me on Twitter wondering if it was the Adam Sandler Hustle movie, I knew Sandler was filming at Oaks so I was suspicious, especially when Ryan mentioned the 2100 block of Spruce Street, where the Turner house in Servant is located. When I check his photo and the movie set photo it was confirmed to me this was probably the Servant film’s missing scene.
Night also released a trailer for the season at the same time while announcing the date.
Police are gone and traffic is back to normal. Cherry pickers are here and there are more decorations up on other houses. The security guard said she thinks it’s for Apple TV — so your guess seems right on pic.twitter.com/A4Hb1GBfw3
What’s interesting about this is last year, the first season of Servant was set in the fall, and the production had the neighborhood take down their holiday decorations and put up autumn like decorations. They even added fall colored leaves to the trees to fill in the empty trees. This year they had the neighbors take down fall decorations, and the production decorated with a snow globe of holiday.

Lala’s 16th birthday party was held on the Saturday before Megan was to appear on SNL in NYC, at the newly re opened Four Seasons Hotel Presidential Suite. 15 of her besties were in attendance to celebrate the big day. Megan sang one song for the birthday girl, took photos and was whisked back to NYC for rehearsals.
Kate Winslet filmed scenes for the HBO Movie Mare of Easttown in Marcus Hook on Thursday 9/30 all day at Star Hotel Bar 1018 Market St. They closed off the surrounding blocks to keep the Covid19 set safe. While this was going on extras who were scheduled to appear at the scene shot over the weekend were getting their Covid tests, before heading to a hotel for quarantining until filming on Friday and Saturday.
But the bulk of the filming for Mare of Easttown over the weekend was a wedding scene they filmed at Girard College. Easy shoot. Extras were transported from quarantine hotel to set in Covid19 cleaned vans to shoot a happy wedding. Sounds like a great day. I know so many of the people working on the set feel safe, and are happy for a days work in PhillyWood.
As I mentioned several times on my blog, Adam Sandler is in town to film a movie with LeBron James called “Hustle” the film will be directed by Philly filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar, the son of the artist who made Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, Isaiah Zagar. (He also did a doc about his dad, which I loved) Sandler appeared on Jimmy Kimmel earlier this week to reveal his new look for the movie, a beard. He told Jimmy “I’m getting ready to do a basketball movie, a scout movie where I’m playing an NBA scout and I discover a player in Spain and I bring him to America. It’s that kind of story, it’s going to be really cool,” Sandler said. It will feature Philadelphia born Kyle Lowry (plays for Toronto Raptors) who will do a “quick little thing”, Sandler said, along with “loads of NBA guys in it.”
@gemmasapienzaxo ran into Adam Sandler last week at Geno’s Steaks on Passyunk sporting his new beard. Look for more sightings around Philly as he’s filming several scenes on basketball courts in town this week.

UPDATE Cake Life Bake Shop is closed for now but reopening soon.
It looks like Cake Life Bake/Shop the popular Fishtown bakery where Jay-Z would buy Beyonce‘s birthday cake and present it to her on the last night of the Made In America festival, has closed. The bakery has cited they couldn’t survive Covid. After a source tipped me off, I sent them a note and this is what I received: Unfortunately, due to the hardships of the COVID-19 outbreak, Cake Life is closing its doors. Thank you for your email! That means that this email address is no longer active (no one will see your email or reply to it). Their phone number is disconnected as well. If you have an urgent business to address with Cake Life’s owners, please email hello@cakelifebakeshop.com. I contacted them there and they had a standardized message saying they’d review their email and answers would be delayed. We’ll miss them. I know they’ll do something delicious in the future. Cake Life Bake Shop did get back to me after my post published, and an outcry of sad cake fans responded.
It looks like Phillywood is bouncing back as Heery-Loftus Casting has sent out a casting call for background actors, as well as basketball players and SAG-AFTRA talent fluent in Serbian actors for a new Netflix film titled “Hustle”, starring Adam Sandler. In other Phillywood news, Kate Winslet, who was in the middle of filming the HBO TV Series “Mare of Easttown” in the Philly area this past winter, has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that starring in Contagion gave her a jump on preparing for Covid-19, leading to her wearing face masks months before the rest of the US. She states in the interview she plans to return to Pennsylvania to finish the final 21 days of filming in September. The cast also includes Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Cailee Spaeny and David Denman. (source)
Legendary DJ Patty Jackson tweeted Warmdaddy’s on Delaware Avenue put on her social media Warmdaddys Soul Food and Live Music has closed. They’re looking for another place to open. My guess is the parcel is being optioned for development as the shopping center which houses the Covid currently closed United Artists theaters, has a lot of empty storefronts as well. This past weekend Flyers TV and In-Arena Host Andrea Helfrich (when I met her a decade ago, she was Miss Philadelphia) had plenty to celebrate as the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup Playoff series since 2012 and her boyfriend, Antonio Presta, proposed at the Four Seasons in Center City. The couple shared their special moment on Saturday overlooking the city of Philadelphia and was accompanied by their beloved mini Australian Shepard, Benji.
Helfrich, a Richboro native and graduate of Council Rock South High School and West Chester University said, “He got me good! A proposal perfectly sandwiched in between playoff rounds, I don’t know how he did it but it was an absolute surprise!” Presta, who is Managing Partner of Craft Manayunk, is an Abington native. Congrats Keith Leaphart, Founder of Philanthropi and Ebonne Ruffins, Vice President of Local Media Development (LMD) at Comcast on their wedding Saturday. Looks like it was a beautiful affair, attended by his son Jayden at the Waterworks behind the Phila Art Museum. The reception was held at longtime friend Chase Lenfest’s home on his patio at Liberty Place 50 stories above our Philadelphia. The couple who met through a mutual friend 3 years ago, were scheduled to be married in Jamaica in June, but the global pandemic had other plans. Way to pivot, love will find a way.
Congrats to Frances Vavloukis and Ken Gross on their backyard wedding on August 19, 2020. Ken’s the Chairman at Connect America Medical Alert (You know them from their popular commercials “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” and she’s a chef at Body X in Bryn Mawr.

Tuesday Dispatches from Elsewhere filmed on Market Street in the Continental again, a location they filmed at over the summer. Wednesday and Thursday they filmed at Ocean Prime at 15th and Sansom Streets as well as in Rittenhouse Square. Look for them to film on Friday near 9th and Lombard, and then next week return to the Curtis Center Tuesday, my sources tell me. Actor Jason Segel and his girlfriend had dinner at Villa Roma on Tuesday night. Sally Field was finally spotted out, she stopped by the Whole Foods on South Street. She drove herself my friend told me. What?? Poor Sally has to navigate our potholes. Hopefully better than the Queer Eye guys, I heard they got a few flats and were none to happy. Thankfully I see the Streets Department is rolling out new streets as we speak.
Yesterday while walking through Rittenhouse Square Allied Philly’s Jesse Cute caught Sally between scenes sitting on a bench. You’ll have a chance to see Sally Field yourself at the Philadelphia Library on November 1 as she discusses her book In Pieces with Marty Moss-Coane, host of Radio Times on WHYY .

Last weekend I went to the GreatPHL19 24 hr discussion event. One of the events I caught was art curator Conrad Benner’s live Streets Department podcast of Jane Golden, Mural Arts. After words I got this shot with former Eagles great Connor Barwin, who opened the night. (How lucky are we that Connor Barwin could have settled anywhere else when not on the field, but he chooses Philly cause we are a hot bed of creativity happening here.) I wasn’t there as I was shooting the Greg Wolf Fundraiser in Trenton. The next day I had hoped to go to a dedication of the new Ed Snider mural, but Mural Arts, but the morning sessions at GreatPHL19 were running behind and I really wanted to catch the Eli Kulp talk. It was powerful and exactly what I needed to hear. He talked about purpose, after tragedy, and we are all aware of the Amtrak crash which paralyzed him when he was at the height of his career. It was a story everyone needs to hear. I hope he writes a book.
