Sunday Chit Chat – Shipp Returns, Vetri Stops By, Eric Blumenfeld

Sunday Chit Chat – Shipp Returns, Vetri Stops By, Eric Blumenfeld Marries

Welcome to Sunday, hope you’re keeping warm.

The cold has made for some beautiful photos.

Welcome home Brittney Shipp, as she returns to NBC10 Philly to share weather duties with Bill Henley. I don’t recall someone boomeranging back to the same station after leaving to go to another city (Oh wait I was chatting with Mike Jerrick today, and he did leave Fox 29 in the 90s and come back in the 00s). I have seen them come back and go to a competing station, so this is really cool. So excited for her, and us. Shipp returns to NBC10 after working as chief meteorologist for KRON-TV in the San Francisco Bay area for two years. She worked at NBC10 as a meteorologist from 2013 to 2016.While she was gone she also wrote a children’s book –  “The Meteorologist in Me.”  Here she is with her NBC10 co-worker, anchor Jacqueline London enjoying the weather this weekend.
Congrats to Michael Strauss and his new eatery Mike’s BBQ is South Philly. Despite the wind, snow and freezing temperatures, he’s sold out of many of the items on the menu night after night, so get there early. Marc Vetri stopped by to wish him well. I think Marc looks damn happy, and relaxed. He’s not a big smiler, but he’s grinning ear to ear about life now. Yes for Marc this is a grin ear to ear.

Congrats to developer Eric Blumenfeld and Laura Cordaro on their marriage, which took place at his latest project The Divine Lorraine Hotel on New Year’s Eve in the newly renovated ballroom at the iconic hotel. I still pinch myself when I realize the most beautiful building in the City has come back to life. THANK YOU ERIC!!

Spotted: Marcus Johnson wide receiver of Philadelphia Eagles dined at Davio’s in center city earlier this week. Marcus had a calamari to start, ordered an 10oz filet medium well for entree.

Spotted: Betty Schlesinger Domb stopped by her namesake restaurant recently with her son, Councilman Allan Domb. It’s one of my favorite restaurants as well, I’m a huge fan of their Academy Sandwich, pickle bar and the HughE German Chocolate Cake, plus the FunFetti Cake.

Mayor Kenney celebrated two years in office, by tweeted out a series of photos earlier this week including this one of me.
WOW so nice, thanks.

Hope to see you at Saxbys latest coffee shop tomorrow. I’ll be shooting the event from 11AM til 1PM.

8:30-9:15 a.m. – Beneficial Bank CEO Gerry Cuddy will serve drinks behind the bar.
9:15-10 a.m. – Agile Cat CEO Peter Madden will serve drinks behind the bar.
11 a.m. to noon – Philadelphia Eagles Malcolm Jenkins will serve drinks behind the bar.

Happy New Year : ChitChat -Lots of Engagements & No Surrender

Happy New Year. I usually do my best of the year entries this week, but as I am going away to Disney World in 2 weeks I’m going to save those entries for that week. It’s Friday so I’m going with my regular around town column ie gossip column where I share with you news of engagements, weddings, new business, celebrity sightings, cute pets, original content, tips from readers, info from PR peeps and of course news curated from Social Media.

Happy
Recently Billy Penn asked me where couples should get engaged in Philly. I picked the Waterworks as my favorite spot to get engaged because of the spectacular views of the City skyline and Boathouse Row. HappyAnd mentioned too cliche would be Rittenhouse Square, but why not anyway – it’s beautiful!!

As I expected many couples got engaged over the holiday, let’s see who’s going to the chapel….

Philly Mag featured a cute engagement of a couple on Philly’s other miracle street- Addison. I love that these days future grooms capture the moment either by hiring a photographer,

or taking selfies.
Happy
Oh it looks like someone read the Billy Penn article as Matt Malinowski popped the question to Charles Lentz at
the Waterworks, and then continued the celebration at Rittenhouse Square, which was the cliche place I mentioned to pop the question, especially during the holidays. What do guys give when they get engaged, sometimes a wedding band, cuff links, or in this case a watch as Matt gave to Chuck. Congrats guys.

Another friend of mine popped the question this weekend – Paul Smith. Paul and I both worked at Kohn Swift in our early careers. Paul and I went on to start our own successful business. Congrats to Paul and Sarah Ann!

Loren Robinson, MD, MSHP said YES to her fellow doctor. Earlier this month Loren was noted as 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Awards Winners for 2017 Congrats on both accounts!

Tattoos for Heroes

My friend Eddie Alderson, 23 and my niece Nicole Rae, 21 are in the battles for their lives, literally and they chose to commemorate the battle with their own “scar”. Both have been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Nicole was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago, and is done treatment and has returned to school, Eddie is still undergoing treatment. They both have been public with their battle, and are winning. They don’t know each other, but they both traveled to NYC this past week to get tattoo’s to represent the battle.

Eddie Alderson (ex-Matthew, ONE LIFE TO LIVE), who now lives in the suburbs of Philly, tweeted earlier this month to Bruce Springsteen that he’d be seeing his Springsteen On Broadway – “Hey @springsteen ! “No Surrender” has been my motto and go-to song throughout my current fight against Cancer. I’m seeing your #BruceOnBroadway show Dec. 27, and would LOVE to get you to write No Surrender on my arm, for my first tattoo! Thank you for being my inspiration!” His former co-stars added their support and pleas to the singer on Twitter. Renée Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline) posted, “Thank you @Eddie_Alderson for inspiring me since our days on #OLTL! I stand with u! #NoSurrender @springsteen!” Melissa Fumero (ex-Adriana), wrote, “Eddie, you’re the best and you inspire me with your strength and bravery! Please, @springsteen give my friend the Xmas present he deserves. Sign his arm!! #nosurrender.” Josh Kelly (ex-Cutter), added, “When I grow up I wanna be @Eddie_Alderson … just my thoughts for the day. #NoSurrender … oh and @springsteen … please sign his arm.” Terri Conn (ex-Aubrey; ex-Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS), posted, “@springsteen, you will find no more an inspiration, a talent, or a kind and pure heart, than in @Eddie_Alderson! #makeadreamcometrue #BruceonBroadway #NoSurrender.”

See the video of Bruce signing Eddie’s arm at Soap Opera Digest
Then Eddie headed to Fun City Tattoo today to get the tattoo done.

Nicole who finished her treatment a year ago, and is well enough to return to school wanted to mark this time in her own way, with 13 bats for reasons she is keeping to herself. What we do know is she’s been a fan of Megan Massacre: tattoo artist, model, fashion contributor, and TV personality for sometime and made an appointment a few months back, as Megan books out months in advance.

I asked Nicole if it was painful, and she told me it was less painful than the constant needles she had to endure during her cancer treatment.

Nicole’s dad Tom also got a tattoo of a bat with Nicole’s initials to honor his daughter (his first tat is a circle stamp honoring his dad who passed away several years ago).

Megan Massacre, Nicole DeFeo and Tom DeFeo

Kristin Alderson and Eddie Alderson

Eddie & Nicole congrats on your tats, and for being an inspiration to us all.
God bless you, and Happy New Year!!

#NOSURRENDER

My New Reality, Glass Celebs, Mama’s Ball Brick&Mortar

Hello Monday, great to see you. I hope everyone had a great weekend, making memories and sharing fun times with friends and family. I’m not always good at making room for others in my life; I like my creature comforts at home, my computer, keeping busy with work. I feel like I’ve had an epiphany and I hope to change some things. Reality

For the past 3 weeks I haven’t felt well. I haven’t been eating right, I had gone back to drinking diet coke, and I over booked myself and my photographers. I was working day and night to produce columns for media outlets, and business is booming. During this time I had Bronchitis, I took a few days off shooting (Thankfully I have a team now), but I continued to work at my desk. I tend to work for hours before I take a break. Both my legs hurt last week as I had shot an event which required me to climb 4 flights of stairs, which is never fun after Bronchitis; I kinda noticed one of my calves was sore, but I thought it’s Charley horse, I get them all the time. Thursday morning I noticed my leg was swollen 3 times my other leg but I had a job that evening and I needed to shoot it. (I did skip seeing the new Fitler Club & a party at Bart Blatstein, but more on that later) so Friday I headed to Jefferson Urgent Care, I probably should have made a Dr’s appt, but I wanted to go to the opening of the Rothman Rink to support my friends at CCD, plus I wanted to see the tree, Love Park and the garden. (Photos will be published later today) BOOM diagnosed with a blood clot in my leg, headed to ER and got great care from the Jefferson team. My worst fear was getting a DVT,  as I’ve known several people who have died of them over the years, someone prominent in the community this year died, and everyone’s favorite reporter David Bloom back in 2003. It was, and is an emotional time bomb and will be for a bit until the blood clot falls apart. I’m drinking a lot of water, which helps, and am now on blood thinners, which is a whole other mess. Thanks to my photogs who jumped into action and covered events I was scheduled for.  I’m grateful to be here. Take aways: Move often, and drink water. Just like they tell you when you fly. I didn’t realize how dehydrated I was, until I got my IV drip, and got hydrated. No more diet soda, and I’ll be cutting back on the iced tea.

Franco Harris a former American football fullback who played professionally in the National Football League for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks stopped by for dinner at D’Angelo’s over the weekend.

Former White House communications director and senior adviser Anthony Scaramucci fielded questions from the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia on Thursday. Afterward he headed to developer Bart Blatstein‘s new home on Rittenhouse Square for a cocktail party and no doubt a tour of his new house with tennis court in the basement.

#MNightShyamalan #Glass is still filming in Allentown with Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy. Friday nite Willis headed home to just outside Manhattan, while Samuel Jackson checked out performance of Cirque du Soleil’s VAREKAI! in Allentown. Next week VAREKAI is @LiacourasCenter  (Photo credit: Lisa Boehm)

Friday night actor/heartthrob James McAvoy had dinner @Brigantessa_EPA w/love Lisa L. Saturday night they headed out to Fishtown Tavern for a few hours of fun. McAvoy, a gentleman as always posed with a few fans included the young lady above who told him she spent a lot of time looking at his bare a$$ in a favorite movie

Congrats to Mama’s Ball. Who announced today:
BALLERS!!!! This is happening Mama will be opening up her first store. We will keep you posted on when the fun begins.

I ran into them last week and they had told me, it was as I said earlier, just one of those weeks that I couldn’t catch up to myself. Look for Mama’s Balls to open in January.
Celebrity Riders can be ridiculous. They range from John Legend’s recent request at Philly Fights Cancer of 2 bottles of water, to Madonna’s requests of lilies and light pink or white roses cut to precisely 6 inches to Dan Rather’s visit last week at the Phila Library where he asked for Frito’s Corn Chips, Coke, Diet Dr Pepper, Water, and Organic Milk.
*****
Tomorrow I’m going to start a new column, called Tuesday To Do. I get so many pitches for events, and plan to pick out the most interesting for you to attend, plus events a PhillyChitChat photographer will be shooting. Often after I publish photos from such events people tell me they wish they knew beforehand. Hopefully this will help.

Bart Blatstein Develops Piazza Parking Lot, James MacAvoy, Holland Taylor, Eddie Alderson, & Meek Mill

Bart Blatstein Develops Piazza Parking Lot, James MacAvoy, Holland Taylor, Eddie Alderson, & Meek Mill

Hello Thursday. Last Saturday I was at Hound-O-Ween at Schmidt’s Commons at the Piazza and I noticed the parking lot across the street was fenced off. So I text Bart to ask him, and coincidentally I ran into him later that evening at Philly Fights Cancer as well.

Meek
This is what he wrote me back when I asked if he was developing the property: Bart said he was working on concept for this amazing parcel of land.
He said it would be complementary to the amazing Piazza.

Meek
He said don’t worry about parking if you’re heading to Wahlburgers, which is in a building still owned by his company Tower Investments, inc. the glass building on the left. On the right is The Schmidt’s Commons at Piazza, which he previously owned and it was called The Piazza at Schmidts. Here’s my write up of the opening night. So crazy to read it, 2009

Meek

There’s a free parking lot across the street catty-corner on a smaller parcel of land still owned by Tower Investments, specifically for Wahlburgers . The parking lot that he is creating a great concept on is the brown parcel of land. On the east-side of the “Piazza Parking Lot” is where The Schmidt’s Commons built a residential parking garage for their residents that live in the apartments. There’s still plenty of parking nearby, and I hear Schmidt’s Commons is in talks to partner with a nearby parking facility.  I can’t wait to see what the visionary Blatstein is going to create on the Piazza Parking Lot.

Meek
Glass movie update: This past weekend Sarah Paulson and her girlfriend, who I adore, Holland Taylor visited The Barnes Museum right before heading to Shyamaween . Maybe on a tip from Samuel L Jackson who stopped by last weekend. We probably won’t see them out and about in Philadelphia for a few weeks, as they’ve headed to Allentown to film for a few weeks in The Allentown State Hospital. According to Sharon Pinkenson, Executive Director of Greater Philadelphia Film Office, all three main characters are filming there – Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy.

Meek
All three have been spotted about and about in Allentown. McAvoy posed for a photo with a Lehigh Fitness Trainer and was seen pumping serious iron. Jackson grabbed a bite to eat at and posed with a worker; While Willis , McAvoy and Shyamalan were all seen at the Allentown Brew Works. Earlier in the day Willis was generous with a tip according to a bellhop. Rumor has it they’ll be back in town to film a few more scenes near Center City, maybe that subway shot at Snyder, and wrap shortly after Thanksgiving, just in time for the Creed 2 production office to open.

Meek
Congrats to my friends Kristen Alderson and her brother Eddie Alderson who participated in the LLS #lightthenight walk in Philadelphia last Saturday night to raise much needed funds for life saving research to battle blood cancers. Eddie has been battling cancer for the past year. It’s great to see him out, and doing better. Sorry I missed it.

Meek Mill was at the Sixers game tonight, but last night he was bothering my favorite candy lady. Looks like this is on Walnut Street, he kept trying to get her to give away her candy since it was Halloween. He’s been spotted all over town recently filming music videos.

Check out PhillyChitChat Friday for more photos from Shyamaween 2017

Joel Embiid Has Insomnia; Mika & Joe In town; Judy Parker Passes

L’Shana Tova to my Jewish Friends. Happy Thursday to all. Still in the throes of the busy Philly Social Season, and I’m really enjoying this weather. Hope you get our and enjoy it. Tomorrow I’ll be on WOGL with Marilyn Russell at 8:50AM, so before you settle into work give us a listen. Soon I’ll be showing up on your TV on CBS3Philly reporting about celebrity signings and Fall Social events and how I can get you in the society columns….

Embiid
Joel Embiid seems to be everywhere lately but the basketball court. My friend Dr. Thanuja Hamilton had just left a Patrice Banks book signing -#sheCANic Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center at Phila Library and decided to stop by Insomnia Cookies near Chestnut St and started chatting with Joel telling him she knew him from somewhere. He then told her he was a tennis player, he gave her the name, and left with the parting words “Trust The Process”. Then it clicked she said. BTW Patrice Banks will be on Good Morning America Friday morning.Embiid
I noticed Hats In The Belfry has opened a up next to men’s shoe store ToBox in the 1800 block of Chestnut (remember a few years back I told you this corridor would become the Fashion District of Philly, after Joan Shepp moved nearby. It definitely is.Embiid
Sad to hear my friends Lisa Gaudio’s step mother songwriter Judy Parker Gaudio passed away last week, on her 79th birthday. I met Judy a few times at events Lisa hosted including her daughter’s wedding where I took this shot. Bob Gaudio as you know is the original “Jersey Boy” having written and sung many of the famed groups songs including a few with Judy her most well-known songs “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” and “Who Loves You,” which were recorded by ‪Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

Embiid
MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski was in town yesterday speaking and shilling her book “Know Your Value” at IBX. Tagging a long was her morning co-host on “Mornings with Joe” Joe Scarborough. They posed for a photo with NBC10’s Tracy Davidson, who will be honored Sunday at the “Minding Your Minds” Blue Jean Gala at Temple Beth Hillel in Wynnewood http://mindingyourmind.org/event/10th-anniversary-blue-gene-gala/ I’ll be there so bring your smile.

Valerie Bertinelli, Selena Gomez, M Night Movie News and more

Valerie Bertinelli, Selena Gomez, M Night Movie News and more PhillyChit Chatter
BertinelliToday’s Rock & Roll Philly 10K sponsored by AACR

Hello Sunday. It might seem gloomy out today, but it’s going to be 82F and that’s a fine day to me.
So many celebrities in town this weekend, let’s see who was out and about

Bertinelli
Friday Adam F. Goldberg was given a replica of the Liberty Bell by Mayor Jim Kenney on behalf of the City of Philadelphia. He also recieved a Flyers Jersey at the noontime ceremony. Friday evening Barry Goldberg, accompanied by Troy Gentile, who plays Barry in the series, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Phillies game. M Night scoting locations in S Philly (Custom)
Film director M. Night Shyamalan was scouting locations for his new movie “Glass” in South Philly. He stopped in Michael Strauss’ Taproom on 19 and posed for nearly everyone in the place. Glass will be shooting in the Philadelphia and Allentown, Pa are from Mid October until the end of November 2017. Check out Heery-Loftus Casting if you’d like to be background talent.

Bertinelli
Valerie Bertinelli was in town for an appearance on QVC Sunday evening. The Hot in Cleveland star checked in at the Ritz-Carlton on Thursday evening after being greeted by paparazzi she complained on twitter. (I think she should check the size of those cameras, they were fans.) Friday she grabbed a cheese steak with provolone from Steve’s at 16th & Chestnut, and was chided from the server who said when you’re in Philly you’re supposed to have cheez wiz on it. Her instagram followers agreed with Steve’s. Saturday night she headed to Bar Avalon in West Chester. John Brandt-Lee, chef/owner, prepared her delicious, family styled Italian dishes for her and her friends.

9-17-2017 10-08-43 AM (Custom)
Selena Gomez was spotted at The Weeknd’s concert at Wells Fargo last night. Recently she’s been in the news after receiving a kidney transplant from her best friend. Selena’s suffers from Lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease.  9-17-2017 10-40-47 AM (Custom)
No word on whether they headed to her and former beau Justin Bieber’s favorite Philly eatery IHop on Walnut St.

Bertinelli
Congrats to Tina Elmer and Drew Brunstein on their recent wedding. As busy as Tina is she made time to stop by and wish me a happy anniversary on Philly Chit Chat’s 10th Anniversary on July 19th at the Ritz. Thanks girl, and for the thoughtful gifts. So happy for you.Bertinelli
That’s another wedding notch for me. Over my lifetime I have connected or in this case indirectly connected duo’s to matrimony. You may remember Geoff Pierce, the hottie on the art museum steps, who I photographed a few years back. Well he’s engaged now to Samantha Keenan, who he met after she recognized him as the beast on the art museum steps. I captured Geoff working out one spring day on the famed Rocky Steps, shirtless. But that wasn’t what really drew my attention, no, he was doing burpees “climbing” up the steps. It was amazing. I was always on the look out for husbands for my single friends and thought this is a perfect specimen. I guess the rest of Philly thought so too as the video and post went viral.   He was chosen as a Philly Daily News Sexy Single as a result as well, he made appearances on Fox 29 and was interviewed on WMMR, Thus somewhere shortly after that Samantha and he met.
CONGRATS YOU TWO LOVE BIRDS.

I’ll see the rest of you here tomorrow!!

Remember the sad story about the accidental fire that claimed the life of a woman in Bensalem, 39-year-old Tabetha Oakes Rutecki who died  trying to save two pets from a house fire. One of the pets lived through the fire, Lil’ Man who was taken to the hospital by a Bensalem Animal Control Officer, who called Red Paws. He spent a few hours being observed, but was ok and released into our care, and has been boarding at Central Bark Falls Township for over a month. Recently he was reunited with the survivors of the fire after they were able to begin to get their life back together.  We need to raise the funds to cover the cost of his boarding so that we can continue to keep families like Lil’ Man’s together after disasters. Dollar Store General Concept to Piazza; M∙A∙C Returns To Rittenhouse, Bruce Willis Spotted

Hello Friday, August is just zipping by; BTW if you’re reading this before 830AM I’m on WOGL for another sing a long today with Marilyn Russell, and my pick for event of the weekend – it’s a killer. That’s a hint. Here’s another edition of #PCCBuzz (yes I know I changed the day again; Friday is a good day for gossip cause you need fun chitchat for the weekend, dinner and the beach) Last week I went to the  2nd Street Festival, it was fun. It wasn’t a client event so I got to really take my time to look around, and guess what I found a very interesting story.

HD1_6375 (Custom)

I saw this awning at The Schmidt’s Commons – DGX Philadelphia. Inside the space was still being built out. I check it out online to see what kind of business it was and it’s a subsidiary of Dollar Store General.  According to a story in the Tennessean:  Dollar General has a new demographic in mind with its smaller-format store concept DGX: millennials. .. There are similarities between a traditional Dollar General store and DGX, but the smaller-format store features a more modern design, a curated selection of goods and a brewed coffee station for metropolitan shoppers.

Dollar
It’s very similar to a convenience store with chips, a fountain machine with a variety of sodas, grab and go sandwiches and many of items to serve city dwellers.
“We are excited about our new smaller store concept and the opportunity to serve busy, city-dwellers with everyday low prices on the essentials they need in a convenient, easy-to-shop format,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO, said in a statement. “The DGX format is geared to meet the needs of the millennial shopper, which is an emerging and important part of our customer base and will help us broaden our appeal to attract a new segment of urban customers who put a high premium on value and convenience.”  (source) I asked around last Sunday and nearby neighbors told me at the end of August.

Dollar
Yesterday I was walking up Chestnut street and saw that Campers Shoes (1734 Chestnut St) had closed and in it’s place was this store window full of an explosion of fantastical colors but what did it mean.  I did some research, and it turns out that it’s a new campaign connected with the launch of M∙A∙C Cosmetics stores opening around the world. Crazy, Greg Seitter gets back from a relaxing vacation, then spends a day getting pies thrown in his face for charity. Sweet.
“I will be hosting a pie in the face fundraiser tomorrow afternoon to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society‘s #LightTheNight campaign. A $20 (or more) donation will entitle a colleague of mine to throw a pie in my face in your honor. Make a donation now: http://pages.lightthenight.org/epa/Phi17/gseitter

His supporters raised over $1000. I wonder if he’ll take more pies for more money?
