Florida Keys Takes Over Philly With Lots of Goodness – #FlKeysCookOff

A touch of the Florida Keys hits Philly this Monday night and I’ve got the scoop on the details. The first-ever Philadelphia Florida Keys and Key West Food Influencer Cook-Off will happen at Walnut Hill College – 24 of the region’s top food bloggers, writers and radio/TV folks will get behind the stove and cook-off for a chance to win a five night six day vacation.

Walnut Hill is the gracious host for the night and their students (and our city’s future restaurant stars and chefs) are prepping and creating a fantastic menu of Florida Keys inspired dishes. Four bartenders from around the region and shaking/stirring Florida Keys-inspired cocktails.
The Florida Keys is sending up Chef Bobby Stoky , Chef, cookbook author and owner of several upper keys restaurants – is coming up as a special partnership to work with the students and be a guest judge.
_DSC1174 (Custom)
The Florida Keys and Key West Cook-off is tied into a station take-over at 30th Street. Now is the time people are planning out spring/summer vacations – plus the Florida Keys is a big wedding destination. The cook-off adds an interactive element and turns the spotlight on one of my favorite thing about the Florida Keys- the cuisine! If you get a chance, stop by 30th Street and check out the ad campaign. Sunsets, snorkeling and blue seas greet you the second you walk through the doors.

CONTESTANTS: They reviewed, posted, snapped, tweeted and blogged about their favorite restaurants and dishes. Now the tables will turn as 24 of the region’s food and travel influences/writers will get behind the stove and cook-off. One of them will win a trip to the Florida Keys and Key West. Chef Bobby Stoky will lead them in demos and will make their own version of a Key Lime Pie and a surprise Florida Keys seafood dish.   Nicole Michalik I Heart Radio  Mina Say What Power 99  Marilyn Russell WOGL  Marisa Magnatta WMMR  Alex Holley FOX-29  Jenny DeHuff PhillyVoice  Ernest Owens Philadelphia Magazine  LeAnne Lindsay Tinsel and Tine  Roberta Pipito Homemade Delish  Jersey Girl Cooks Lisa Grant  Kass Dahlquist  Philly Food Girl   Rachee Fagg Say It Rachee  Jordan Price Food Sweat Beers  Linda Arceo Giggles Gobbles Gulps  Sandy Zimmerman Philly Bite Mag   Sarah Maiellano Eater, Thrillist, USA Today, Freelancer  Colleen Kennedy  Souffle Bombay  Emily Rush Penn Appetite  Sarah Ricks Very Hungry Traveler  Iris McCarthy The Palate Princess  Denine Gorniak The Bicycle Chef  Linda Vertlieb Frugal Philly Mom  Emily Tharp Her Philly  Steve McCann Philly Gay Calendar

Florida Keys & Key West Cocktail Competition

As part of the Florida Keys and Key West Cook-Off at Walnut Hill College they are giving a bartender a chance to win a vacation! They shake and stir. They listen to your problems. They know your every need. Four of Philly’s most talented and over-worked bartenders are getting a chance to get away from it all for a two night three day trip to the Florida Keys. Participants are from the just-opened Dim Sum House in University City, South Street Headhouse’s Whetstone Tavern, and Rittenhouse Row’s Fine Palate and Vesper. Cast your vote for your favorite Keys-inspired cocktail below. The public will cast their advance vote online, guests at the event will cast a vote and then our favorite son Pat Croce (who owns several bars in the Keys!) will also judge. Pat is even putting the winning cocktail on his menu for a week in honor of the winning bartender.

Our host Walnut Hill College is a culinary school who has had famous alumns like Fuel’s Rocco Cima, Geno’s Steaks Geno Vento, Will BYOB’s Chris Kearse and Ela’s Jason Cichonski.  For this event, our city’s future star chefs and restaurant owners are getting real world experience in working with Chef Bobby Stoky from the Keys. Stoky is owner/chef of popular restaurants in the Upper Keys including Señor Frijoles, Sundowners, Cactus Jack’s, Ballyhoo’s and Marker 88. He will work with students on prep, talk to them about his experience, answers questions and work with them in the kitchens during the competition. Students will also have their first chance to mix and mingle with food writers that they will one day work with at their own restaurants. If you haven’t been to Walnut Hill College, the bakery is open to the public and they have lunch service prepared by the students in the adorable courtyard. They also host private parties and events – and their spaces are themed and so unique. My favorite is the Great Chef’s Room.

Helping out on the decor of the project is Les Dames president (and Diner en Blanc Co-Host) Natanya DiBona so you know it’s going to be classy.

To Win A Pair of Tickets To Monday Night’s Key West Cook Off head over to

my Facebook Philly ChitChat and answer this question. What is the shell of a Key Lime Pie made out of?

Put the answer under the link for this article. Thanks

My mom lives in the Middle Keys (Marathon) and it’s glorious. She and dad chose the area about 20 years ago for its’ beauty,
fishing, outdoor activities and proximity to all the Keys, each have their own unique identity. So I’m thrilled to be working on this project, and can attest to the beauty of the Keys. I’ve been to Key West at least 25 times. They have a lot of great attractions all year long, and a spectacular Halloween week long celebration that you just have to see.

Florida Keys & Key West

Organizer of Florida Keys & Key West Cook-Off and Cocktail Competition

Connected by the historic Overseas Highway (considered one of the country’s most beautiful drives), the Florida Keys are a perfect summer travel spot. Each island has something unique from fishing and diving to nature preserves and rich history, the Keys offer a laid-back atmosphere that make for a perfect escape. The island chain is rich in arts & culture, yet if you crave the wild outdoors, the Florida Keys’ guided eco-tours, walking trails, environmental centers and a plethora of green travel initiatives will satisfy.  The Keys’ many dive-snorkel charters will take you to the United States’ only living coral barrier reef and offer Florida Keys scuba diving vacation memories that will last a lifetime. The destination is also ideal for the culinary enthusiast as fresh locally caught seafood abounds. The Florida Keys & Key West invite you to “Come as you are.®”

Franklin Institute Celebrates Mardi Gras with Costumed Guests & An Armadillo

Everyone once in awhile I notice that the Franklin Institute has a fun quirky “Science after Dark” party. I got back from my trip on Monday night and was excited to see that they were having one for Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras the following night.

_DSC1150 (Custom)
The sold out event attracted many folks from around our area. I especially enjoyed capturing people who dressed for the themed night.

Franklin

That’s a clue, if you want to appear in any of my outlets, dress to for the theme. PS The Red Ball is coming, wear red. These folks broke the rules for me, they put their masks on. Know they you are not to wear masks inside the Franklin Institute. Don’t worry they immediately put them back on the top of their head.

Franklin

The Elmwood Zoo was there with a couple animals. Here’s an Armadillo

Franklin

There were a lot of demonstrations. This was one of my favs, he’s explaining various crimes committed near Bourbon Street, and
medical details on each crime. It was fascinated and horrifying at the same time.

Franklin

These folks were trying out the frozen frozen graham crackers,

_DSC1077 (Custom)
which when eaten would cause dragon’s breath

Ohhhh the Flower Show is coming. I love the Flower Show. I love that I get to partner with them on promoting it cause I love the flower show. It starts Saturday, March 11 and runs through March 19th. There’s lot of fun activities including their new party this year, “Flowers After Hours” on Saturday night at 9:30PM. You get to see the flower show at night, with less crowds, plus dance to the tunes with Best of Philly’s DJ Robert Drake and rocker Tommy Conwell; sip and sample spirits from Fine Wine & Good Spirits; save a Snap by creating your own life-size floral crown; and geek out over unexpected ’90s themed games with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Franklin Institute. UrbanStems will pop-up with a show-stopping floral selfie-wall. The evening will be hosted by Kristen Kurtis, ’90s enthusiast and XPN morning show host. Plus there’s a costume party, and you know how I feel about that.

Franklin Franklin

I have a feeling I’m going to see this on St. Patrick’s Day as wellFranklin

Yum frozen marshmallows. I tried them too.

Franklin

There is wine samplings, but if you want a full glass there were plenty of bars set up for spirits and snacksFranklin

There were also play stations. These folks are making bracelets or as I like to say, memories

Franklin

They have a new sports exhibit, which is really cool and interactive. Kids and adults will really love it.

The Franklin Institute has a young friends organization called “Innovators”

PhillyGossip: NFL Draft Details & The Chinese Lantern Festival in Franklin Square Returns

PhillyGossip: NFL Draft Details – Run Against Your Favorite Player & Franklin Square Returns

Hey everyone hope you’re well. I’m still getting used to reality after my short vacation to Anguilla. Lots of fun Philly Gossip and Philly News You Can Use has happened over the past week. Let’s get started.

NFL

Tuesday was a busy day with press conferences and announcements. I went to the NFL Draft announcement at Phila Art Museum.
The Mayor will join NFL Senior Vice President of Events Peter O’Reilly and Co-Chair of the NFL Draft Host Committee and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski to unveil the details of the “NFL Draft Experience Presented by Oikos Triple Zero”, an expansive free admission outdoor football festival for fans and families.

NFL
The NFL Draft will be held in Philadelphia from April 27-29, with the NFL transforming part of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into the NFL Draft Experience, a free (yes, free!) expansive outdoor football festival.

There will be a staging area where the draft will take place. It will be located on the Phila Art Museum Steps.
Ticketing info is still being finalized by the NFL and more details will be released in the coming weeks. While the NFL is handling the entire ticketing process for the NFL Draft, there will be some unique opportunities to take in the experience, like participating as a seat filler in the theatre and plaza area. Seat filler requests need to be submitted in advance and that can be done by visiting www.1iota.com. Additionally, information about parking will be communicated once details are finalized by the NFL. Keep an eye on PhiladelphiaEagles.com for all the latest NFL Draft information.

NFL

The NFL will transform part of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into the NFL DRAFT EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY DANNON OIKOS TRIPLE ZERO, a free, expansive outdoor football festival. Fans of all ages and all teams will be able to take part in the future of football through interactive exhibits, immersive games, virtual reality experiences, player autograph sessions and more.

NFL
One of the features on the Parkway will be the Combine Corner, which will allow fans to run the 40-yard dash and test their other athletic skills (above is a smaller version which is located inside The Franklin Institute where you run against Eagles Players), to an NFL Virtual Reality experience and NFL replica locker rooms. Plus, the NFL Draft Experience Tailgate will feature menu items from some of Philadelphia’s best restaurants. Other highlights include:

  • NFL Virtual Reality – Experience NFL games using virtual reality technology.
  • The Vince Lombardi Trophy – Fans will have the opportunity to take their photo with the Super Bowl trophy.
  • AFC & NFC Locker Rooms – Visit a replica NFL locker room as it appears on game day. Experience the sights of an NFL pregame with sleek translucent LCDs.
  • NFL Museum (Pro Football Hall of Fame display area) – This exhibit features historical Eagles memorabilia, Super Bowl rings and Conference Championship trophies. Fans can get a digital Pro Football Hall of Fame bronze bust in their likeness.
  • College Football Corner – Fans can view College Football Hall of Fame memorabilia from former first round Draft picks and Eagles legends, and cheer on Draft prospects from their favorite college team. Life-size player mannequins offer unique photo opportunities.
  • NFL Draft Experience Tailgate – Enjoy selections from some of Philadelphia’s best restaurants in a “taste of the town” tailgate.
  • NFL Network Set – Watch NFL Network analysts break down the NFL Draft.
  • ESPN Set – Check out SportsCenter live from NFL Draft Experience.
  • NFL Shop at Draft – Stop by for the largest assortment of NFL Draft merchandise, including customizable Nike Jerseys and the official 2017 NFL Draft Cap by New Era and other exclusive Draft caps.
  • NFL Draft Set – Visit the official NFL Draft set from Thursday to Saturday and see the view from behind the podium.
  • 3-2-2017 9-35-07 AM (Custom)
  • NFL DRAFT SCHEDULE

    • Thursday, April 27: Round 1 festivities, which will include incoming prospects walking the red carpet before entering an outdoor theater. More fans than ever before will be able to view the Commissioner announcing selections and greeting draftees during the first round with the NFL building the first ever outdoor Draft Theatre.
    • Friday, April 28: Thirty-two former players who are members of the NFL Legends Community, one representing each team, will be on hand for Night 2 to announce selections. Night 2 Draft (Rounds 2-3) announcements will also feature winners of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide.
    • Saturday, April 29: The Draft will conclude with Rounds 4-7 and the final day of the free fan festival.

(Also what’s excited is by the time the NFL Draft comes along, it looks like both Civil War Monuments will be unveiled. Currently they’re boxed up as they are doing road construction there.)

The Harlem Globetrotters Back In Philly Performing Incredible Stunts at City Hall

Last year I got this shot of the Mayor and the Harlem Globetrotters at City Hall,  to promote their upcoming stint at Wells Fargo Center and it landed on the cover of Metro Philadelphia. This year the stunt went beyond balancing two basketballs on a couple of fingers. The PR of the Wells Fargo Center sent us a video

Globetrotters

In the 116 year history of City Hall in Philadelphia, the video below shows a first – a trick shot with the Mayor and the Harlem Globetrotters.  Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney trekked up four flights of stairs with a basketball in hand and gave a pass to West Philly native Bria “Swish” Young – only the 14th female in the Globetrotters’ history.  Swish turned and shot the ball through a window and into a hoop for a live audience in the courtyard.  The Globetrotters are in Philadelphia preparing for 10 games in the area, including three at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5.  The video is approved for media (courtesy Harlem Globetrotters).

This is incredible!!

s a thank you to the City of Philadelphia and the Mayor’s office, the Harlem Globetrotters will donate 50 tickets for kids from the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia to see their game live.

Swish is in her rookie season with the Globetrotters after graduating from Philadelphia University.  She joined her teammate Zeus McClurkin in the video.

The Globetrotters will play a total of 10 games in the Philadelphia area starting Friday, March 3.  In addition to games at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, March 4 at 12 p.m. and Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., the Globetrotters will bring their tour to Trenton, Delaware, Atlantic City, Temple University, Allentown, and Reading.

Tickets to see the Globetrotters and the full schedule of Philadelphia area games are available at www.HarlemGlobetrotters.com/philly.
