FIRST PERSON: The Documentary that Will Change Minds

The portraits presented in the First Person documentary are based on kids living in Philadelphia, in tough neighborhoods. Not unlike kids in the “better” neighborhoods, these teenagers also have obstacles such as lack of motivation and peer pressure, but while also battling the violence that sometimes permeates their world. Most of the kids parents were very supportive and encouraging, although some of the kids did grow up in different parental situations, with single parents, and with little structure, and discipline. What was truly brave of these kids was their candor regarding their situations, particularly Macho, who confesses that he puts on a tough exterior to get through the day, or Fresh who contemplates selling drugs on the street because he doesn’t ever want to work at McDonalds. First Lady Lisa Nutter; Scion rep, James Johnson, Director/Producer Benjamin Herold who received the Scion Award for Best Director of a documentary, First Lady of Philly, Lisa Nutter and Thom Cardwell, PFF Dir. of Development
Here are the kids again…A big obstacle for the kids was the school system. Either teachers didn’t seem to care, especially towards grading the students and just passing the ones that were getting the failing marks too or they were too overwhelmed with the responsibility of being the only parental force in the kids lives, which is really a losing battle. As it is teenagers don’t always have the respect for adults in any neighborhood, and without parents to enforce discipline, the kids can run amok. It was heartening to see the teens as dreamy eyed Sophomores and psyched by the prospect of college and becoming professionals; but as the years waned on, the motivation eased and only 2 out of the 7 profiled made it to college. (Although another one is studying Real Estate in jail, as he serves out his term for murder)

Ursula Rucker entertains at the after party at the World Cafe
As much as I was disappointed in the kids who for some reason or another dropped out of school, because of the lack of motivation, or hopelessness. The support of their parents was amazing, and really impressed me. In the end it just seemed that peer pressure was too much to overcome for most of them. How many of us would rather be accepted by our friends, then to study alone for a future that seems so far off.

What a shock it was for me and Malikka Saeed to find out that the key to college costs are out of reach for so many. I was wondering was she the only student to go to a non-coed school? Maybe taking the distraction of the opposite sex out of the equation was helpful to reaching her education goal.

The candor of the students was amazing, even with my blogs I don’t think I could be so brave and vulerable in admitting my fears in such a public way. Finally, come on, don’t you think it’s our responsibility to educate the kids of our future. College should be affordable. Thank you Steven Parr, Malikka Saeed, Kurtis Graves, Shalisa Ousley, Macho, Doug Fresh for your courage in sharing your stories. I do hope you live your best life, but you’d better start soon or you might become one of those people Sharlisa describe so perfectly “I see my friends basically just sitting at home, doing what they was doing when they was little kids, watching TV and eating cereal in the afternoon.” TO SUPPORT FIRST PERSON and to read more about the documentary:

WADE FROM SLIDERS – Sabrina Lloyd

Ok it’s not fair that I write about this event out of sequence, as I just attended it on Sunday, but the truth is I am exhausted. I have shot a lot of events, processed my photos to send to my Photo agency, and gotten little sleep. Tonight, Monday as it’s 3AM right now and I still consider it to be Sunday night, anyway no events Monday night for me, so I will begin the process of doing the festival in order, sending out the photos I promise, I think and hmm sleeping? BUT Ooh la la I met Wade from Sliders today. I will write more about the film she was in in sequence, but I love Sliders and was very excited. Silly me I never got to tell her how much I love that show, but we talked about other things. Hi Chelsea.

PHILADELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT – YOUNG AT HEART

Seriously, sometimes I can’t imagine how lucky I am that I get to follow my dreams and fulfill a passion I had put aside when I was in 8th grade because I was a shy and intimidated guy. I say that for a couple reasons, one, I am shooting the Phila Film Festival again (for the blog and news content) this year and have grown tremendously over last year (a lot has changed since last year and I am bursting to say that I got a note from my agency that a photo of mine is in last months Rolling Stone Mag, its not of a concert but http://sharpshootermedia.blogspot.com/ it’s Rolling Stone!!) Ok, back to them documentary at hand: “Young at Heart” is a terrific film about courage, pursuing dreams, having a sense of humor and death is a part of life.

Although I was fortunate to see this showing last night, they did say that it would be released around April 18th in Philadelphia. It’s a beautiful story about a chorus of elderly folks singing socially conscious songs, featuring intricate background vocals of the R&B and rock genre. Many of the songs were originally geared towards youth, singing about making a difference in the world, rebelling and such, but the message is eternal and the irony is not lost on the seniors.
“I wanna be Sedated”
It was another sold out opening night

Thom Cardwell offers opening remarks for the 17th Annual Phila Film Festival (PFF)And if you are a long time reader of Philly Chit Chat, you know who this is. It’s my Sharon Pinkenson, who like Madonna, I am unable to say two words to because of some worship complex I haveTrudy Haines, I worship her too, but have been able to tell her how much I admire her almost every chance I have. Here’s she interviewing some of the cast. Joseph Mitchell, Helen Boston, Liria Petrides, and the choir director Bob Cilman; Liria tells me that one song they really wanted to do was “Satisfaction” by the Stones. But the boys refused to allow them to have the rights as their old choir was about to go on tour and sing it themselves. Maybe the Stones didn’t want any comparisons between them and the Young at Hearts.
Best line from a movie in awhile: Why Ed and Dorothy have been married for 54 years, “We stayed together for the kids, she didn’t want them, and neither did I.”

“Golden Years”

After the first screening it was over to the Brassiere Pierre for a VIP cocktail party

Congratulations to Claire Brown Kohler the new president of the Board at the Philadelphia Film Society, here with Dino Minelli the GM of Brasserie Perrier. Our hosts for the party Everyone is having a great time, I was sorely under dressed, but hey I’m the photographer. You should see the paps on the red carpets of the Oscar

Then it was over to XIX and the after party for “Young at Heart”
Let the games begin Gary, Laura and Ettore (I used to hang with these guys in the EIGHTIES!)
Candy Bar Mary, Scott and Mara (have I mentioned Mary’s film “Electile Dysfunction” opening on Wednesday 4/9 at 7PM)
unexpected entertainment – Breakdancing is back, and in a big way

“Staying Alive” and “I Will Survive”

Laura has all the luck

Marybeth and Joe (Have I mentioned Joe’s movie “Electile Dysfunction” premiering 4/9 at 7PM at the Prince)

Heather and Kelly (Good to see you both again this year)

Improv at XIX

Thanks Vitamin Water and 50 Cents, I enjoyed you all night long

Sorry if your photo isn’t up here, it was an oversight Tyra, or I ran out of room. I will be uploading the shots to my smugmug account sometime this weekend or check out http://www.phillyfests.com/pff/home.cfm for the photos that Gail Kamenish the Official Photographer for the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Tigre Hill’s “The Barrel of A Gun” Wrap Party in Philadelphia, Pa

Ironically on the day that Director Tigre Hill held his wrap party of “The Barrel of A Gun”, a film about the murder of Officer Daniel Faulkner and Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted of killing him in 1981, a ruling on the validity of the death penalty for Mumia was overturned. Here Tigre is with executive producer Kevin Kelly. Tigre says “This is a film with a lot of passion on both sides.”
Author of Black Brothers, Inc., Sean Patrick Griffin and Political Columnist Mary Patel at the wrap party of Tigre Hill’s “A Barrel of A Gun” held at Rae at the Cira Center. (Did I mention Mary’s film premiere at the Prince next Wednesday at 7PM “Electile Dysfunction”) – (Editors note: I think I have told you before, if I hear that a shot may be published, locally, I usually wait until after it appears in the paper before posting the shots on my blogs. On Tuesday a photo from this event did make the paper: http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/todaystalk/20080401_Inqlings__Nudist_worship__Check_your_calendar.html
and then today in Mary Patel’s column, which I have to say has a great write up of the party and is somewhat revealing:
http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2008/04/03/phillywood )
I love this shot, I really like a good candid. Here’s Sean Patrick in deep conversation with KYW’s Kathy Orr as Tigre and Al Griffin look on. At first I was going to hold this shot back, as well as Larry Mendte because they’re news people and I wasn’t sure if their appearance at the party was an ethical issue, but after speaking with several people in the field, they said that wasn’t my decision to make, and I am there to report it, not tamper with it. Then when I saw Dan Gross’ column (he was at the party too) where he names them and the other folks in attendence, that it was ok, I am just reported that they were there, as well as many other Phila celebrities, officers and friends. Including former Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, District Attorney Lynne Abraham, CN8’s Greg Coy, CBS 3’s Lesley Van Arsdall, Larry Mendte and Kathy Orr, NBC 10’s Mike Strug, attorney Jimmy Binns, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Bill Colarulo Tigre introduces former Eagle Gary Cobb to Director of Development at the Philadelphia Film Festival, Thom Cardwell.

Larry Mendte looks exactly like he does on TV, and he is tall as heck
Mara Toukatly and Scott P. Sigman of Bochetto & Lentz, P.C (you know the offices on Locust Street with the boxing gloves on the sign)
Friends producer Tara Nurin and Sgt/ Ray Evers
Cinematographer Chad Jenkins, producer Tara Nurin, Producer Ed Kenedy, director Tigre Hill, Executive Producer Kevin Kelly and Art Director Matt Chom
(BTW Chad Jenkins was also the cinematographer on Mary Patel’s documentary, “Electile Dysfunction” [www.CHPproductions.com ]) Thank you Tigre for allowing me to come and cover this event. I am a huge fan of his from “Shame of the City” and I look forward to seeing “A Barrel of A Gun” when it’s released at the end of the year. Knowing Tigre and his last film. this documentary will be well developed, interesting and uncover the truth.

TOMORROW THE PHILADELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL OPENS

And I am so going to be covering it like no one’s business. I hope you will follow along as I capture everything possible. I am so excited that our little town has such a huge opportunity to present a lot of quirky fun films that you might never even have a chance to see if they didn’t come to Philly and the film festival. So a huge thanks to Ray Murray, Thom Cardwell and all the folks at PFF for bringing these nuggets to our City.

http://www.phillyfests.com/pff/home.cfm
Let me just plug my friend Mary Patel’s documentary on the state of our election process called “Electile Dysfunction”; it’s showing next Wednesday 4/9/08 at 7PM. Both she and co-director/producer Joe Barber will be there for a Q&A after the showing. I can’t get into it, but this little girl is really going to make a splash in the film industry, as she already has a few big names lined up for her next big movie. (read it here now, because when she sees this posting she’s going to make me pull this scoop off, inks not dried yet; but I am so happy for her I can hardly stand it)

IT’S SPRING WHEN I SEE

Well of course these Cherry Trees. Sometimes it’s so cold in March and April I never take that walk down Kelly Drive to see these beauties

Bob selling his water, pretzels and things along Kelly Drive. He told me last night that he is 81 and has been doing this for 45 years. Of course he also said, “HughE I didn’t see you last year, you look like you need some exercise!” He’s so funny. OK I remember hearing about these bike racks last year. I finally had a chance to see them, they’re kinda clever. Do you guys think the Coke Bike Racks are an eyesore like my friend Mike?
Tuesday Bike night. Anyone who has been a regular along Kelly or MLK Drives know about Tuesday Bike night where this huge contingent of bicycles ride the road.
This guys fishing at dusk in the Schuylkill. There’s a couple problems here, he’s alone along this path 30 feet below civilization, rats and is he going to eat what he catches?

Skateboarders are more numerous than rats or roaches. Nothing is safe from them.
Aaah peaceful on the river. I wonder if I will be able to wake up in 5 hours to shoot Obama at the Sheraton?
My friend Colleen decides that after our marathon walk and my constant talk, she needs to be more like Rocky than Hillary Clinton

3 PHOTOS IN PHILA INQUIRER – LISA PAGE Q102; LAUREN GRAHAM AND JEFF DANIELS ON THE SET OF THEIR NEW MOVIE FILMING IN PHILADELPHIA Published 3/30/08

Sure I’m exhausted and sick this week, but hey I have had results for the fruits of my labor. In INQlings this week, Michael Klein comes through with great entertainment stories and news about movies being film in Philadelphia, including the Lauren Graham / Jeff Daniels movie, the Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston Movie, and the Transformer movie, really they are all going to be filmed in Philadelphia. Also information on an appearance by Julie Andrews. So check out this link and read about Phillywood events. Some of you may recall I covered the South Moon Under event on the blog last week, and as with a lot of potential published photographs I sometimes hold one back, I don’t even think I mention Lisa Paige or Nicole at the event, and I know I didn’t include this photo in the bunch. I love Lisa’s reaction in this shot.

THURSDAY NIGHT EVENTS – Chef News, Chelsea Clinton Visits Philadelphia for Photos, A Movie Wrap Party and Mary Patel Electile Dysfunction Announcement

Tonight reminded me of many of those nights I’ve spent in NYC chasing celebrities all over the island at the different events. I am just going to touch on most of them and write more about them next week. First I attended an event at Brasiere Pierre. Here is Chef Dan Marcantuno, who I just wrote about winning the WMGK “Golden Spoon Award” earlier this week; and Carrie Nork of one my favorite PR Firms, Cashman & Assocs. They had a special kick off. Then it was quickly to North Philly and the latino restaurant Cobre and a stop on the Chelsea Clinton Q&A tour for her mother Hillary. Hello never knew you can’t get a cab going North on Broad Street. Next time tokens for me, but when I finally arrived I was greeted by a cheering crowd of Hillary supporters.

There were lots of Hillary fans waiting for Chelsea Clinton. Well except for the guy you can’t see sitting on the step behind this women, waving the Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara flag and playing the propoganda on his boom box. Chelsea arrives and she is much more beautiful then I remember. This time as opposed to 2 years ago, she is all smiles for my camera.
It was crowded inside, and I made the mistake of thinking I could get good shots from the 2nd level dining area
nah not even with my long lens
One by one as it got hot and uncomfortable, the press began to thin out and I was able to get a better shot. Then it was 8:15 and I was late for the third event of the night which had begun at 6PM and scheduled to end at 9PM

At RAE there was a wrap party for a film that tells an important story of Philadelphia that happened long ago, but still rears it’s ugly head in the news today, er yesterday. I will write more about this event next week. Speaking of films, Mary Patel was there too (Rae’s Chef Daniel Stern to her right)
Mary has a film in the film festival “Electile Dysfunction” and it’s on April 9 at 7:00PM.
It’s about politicians, the political system and it’s more relevant today than ever.

LAUREN GRAHAM IN PHILLY FILMING THE DREAM OF THE ROMANS

image I found a website with a few photos I took the other day. I think when entertainment news sites buy your entertainment photos for their sites, Anna Wintour should count that as being published and credential me for the Met Gala in May. They really are news sites and part of the media, don’t you think? Hmm this should probably be posted on my Confessions of a Paparazzi site?
