Around Town: Dispatches Filming; Evan Peters Spotted and More on Hot Dad Bradley Cooper

Hello Thursday. PhillyWood is hot and happening, as the cool fall weather settles in. For me SOCIAL SEASON is in full, from today through 11/3 I am shooting at least 2 events a day. Also going strong since June is Dispatches From Elsewhere this week filming in Center City, plus I have updated news on the upcoming Kate Winslet HBO series and casting. Let’s get started Around Town With HughE

Tuesday Dispatches from Elsewhere filmed on Market Street in the Continental again, a location they filmed at over the summer. Wednesday and Thursday they filmed at Ocean Prime at 15th and Sansom Streets as well as in Rittenhouse Square. Look for them to film on Friday near 9th and Lombard, and then next week return to the Curtis Center Tuesday, my sources tell me. Actor Jason Segel and his girlfriend had dinner at Villa Roma on Tuesday night. Sally Field was finally spotted out, she stopped by the Whole Foods on South Street. She drove herself my friend told me. What?? Poor Sally has to navigate our potholes. Hopefully better than the Queer Eye guys, I heard they got a few flats and were none to happy. Thankfully I see the Streets Department is rolling out new streets as we speak.

Yesterday while walking through Rittenhouse Square Allied Philly’s Jesse Cute caught Sally between scenes sitting on a bench. You’ll have a chance to see Sally Field yourself at the Philadelphia Library on November 1 as she discusses her book In Pieces with Marty Moss-Coane, host of Radio Times on WHYY .

I wrote in the spring that Kate Winslet will be coming to the Philly area to film an HBO TV Series “Mare of Easttown”, Our award winning casting company Heery Loftus Casting is looking for Caucasian IDENTICAL TWIN (or Triplets) BOYS , age 11 months to 14 months, for RECURRING ROLES on the show. Last weekend I went to the GreatPHL19 24 hr discussion event. One of the events I caught was art curator Conrad Benner’s live Streets Department podcast of Jane Golden, Mural Arts. After words I got this shot with former Eagles great Connor Barwin, who opened the night. (How lucky are we that Connor Barwin could have settled anywhere else when not on the field, but he chooses Philly cause we are a hot bed of creativity happening here.) I wasn’t there as I was shooting the Greg Wolf Fundraiser in Trenton. The next day I had hoped to go to a dedication of the new Ed Snider mural, but Mural Arts, but the morning sessions at GreatPHL19 were running behind and I really wanted to catch the Eli Kulp talk. It was powerful and exactly what I needed to hear. He talked about purpose, after tragedy, and we are all aware of the Amtrak crash which paralyzed him when he was at the height of his career. It was a story everyone needs to hear. I hope he writes a book.

Saturday was the dedication for the Ed Snider Hockey Mural: Inspiring Our Youth Mural Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation will dedicate a new mural, Snider Hockey: Inspiring Our Youth. The mural features the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation and celebrates the life and legacy of its founder and the visionary behind the Philadelphia Flyers, the late Ed Snider. The design, created by artist Jared Bader, highlights how Snider Hockey builds lives and unites communities through its on-ice and off-ice initiatives, including mentorship, tutoring, life lessons, and academic support in attending and graduating college. Wag The Tail Wednesday – Adorable Dogs & Empty The Shelter Info

Years ago I used to do a dog / pet column on Wednesday. People asked me what happened to it, I just got lazy like a dog and stopped doing it. Heart + Paw Introduces Future of Pet Care During Grand Opening Celebration

The future of pet care is coming to the Philadelphia area.  Heart + Paw, recently named one of the best retail environments of 2019 by Fast Company, is wagging its tail into a brand new Glen Mills location on Saturday, September 28. Launching in the open-air shopping center Glen Eagle Square, this one-of-a-kind, integrated pet care center is reimagining the future of pet care by offering veterinary care, grooming and daycare all in one place for your furry, four legged family member. They consider themselves partners in pet parenthood which pet owners (and their pets) find very exciting. 

The Grand Opening celebration began with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m along with pet-friendly “green” carpet photo ops. The public (and their pets) were welcomed to join in on the fun and to explore what this cutting edge pet care center has to offer. There was hand painted watercolor pet portraits available, Catnip planting, a treat bar the dogs, tours of our space including the locally-sourced and sustainable touchpoints designed and more. 

Heart + Paw creates unique service touchpoints for its clients, for example the ability to text with their vet, as well as tailoring the low-stress experience to the unique needs of cats and dogs. Cats have a feline-only waiting room and in the exam room, there are custom built cat shelves designed by the Chief Veterinary Officer so that cats can get examined where they feel most comfortable. For dogs, there are custom floor mats so that dogs can be examined side-by-side with the vet and avoid the stress of lifting them onto the table. Over a thousand people attended the 3rd annual Girard Avenue Street Festival in Brewerytown.

Saturday I headed to the 3rd annual Girard Avenue Street Festival in Brewerytown. I live about a half mile away, but rarely go towards that area, as Center City always has my attention. What I found was a very vibrant neighborhood, friendly folks, and lots of new businesses.

Toby Keith Surprises a Bride & Groom; Hilltown & Alice Pizza On Market

Happy Fall, I think it’s finally here. Break out the pumpkin spice, flannel and rakes. Let’s check out Around Town With HughE which you’ll find every Thursday on the blog.

I missed this little nugget last month, but a surprise wedding guest attended the wedding reception of Dana Gallo White and Matt White on Sept. 14, at Cescaphe Events Vie!! As the father of the groom’s speech concluded with “Let’s have a party!”… out came country super star Toby Keith along with Red Solo Cups for all of the guests for the sing a long. He also serenaded the couple in a solo dance on the floor. **In case you weren’t at the wedding, you still have a chance to see Toby Keith as he’s appearing at Parx Casino Xcite Center on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2.

A Roxborough popular spot called Hilltown Tavern, is now expanding into Fairmount at 23th and Brown. They’re hiring as well. 795 N. 24th Street

Speaking of expanding, I see the very poplar by the ounce pizza, called Alice, is expanding to Market Street in the Septa building at 1234 Market Street.

Another business booming is coming to Center City is Joseph Anthony’s, a very popular Glen Mills, PA Spa and Salon. They’re expanding and moving into The Loews Hotel. I highly recommend them. Over the past 10 years Philadelphia has really come into it’s own with it’s hot, hot, hot food scene, arts & culture, collaborative spirit, development and a concerted effort to create a future filled with interesting and thought provoking projects. One of those projects if definitely the upcoming GR8PHL 2019 This 24-Hour Ideas Festival Marathon at 421 N. 7th Street. They have an extensive list of thought provoking leaders in the community who are going to talk about what’s going on in these areas I just mentioned, and where we are going. Similar to Phila Magazine’s Think Fest, but on the grass roots level where a lot of great ideas begin. I plan to pop in and out between my gigs, I hope I see you there.

Another fantastic similar event coming up is the B.PHL Innovation Fest October 15 – 17. Philadelphia’s first citywide innovation festival. The three-day event, which will take place October 15-17, is designed to further Philly’s reputation as the most innovative city on the East Coast, though, as Independence Blue Cross CEO Dan Hilferty noted, groundbreaking discoveries in the life sciences are already helping the city make its mark. Read more about it over at PhillyMag Then remember in November, there’s Philly Mag’s Think Fest. It’s great to have these events which brings like minded, and not so like minded folks together to move Philly forward. One thing is for sure, it’s an exciting time to be in Philadelphia.

Opera Philadelphia O19 Gala Was An Exquisite Event

Opera Philadelphia Festival O19 celebration Honoring Maestro Rovaris

For the past three years, Opera Philadelphia’s seasons began with Festival O, and as is the case this year O19. On September 21, 2019 Opera Philadelphia held their annual gala, this year at the iconic Academy of Music, the Grand Old Lady of Locust Street with ticket prices beginning at $1,000.

Many guests arrived promptly at 5:30pm for Maestro’s Reception in the grand ballroom of the majestic building, a start to the magnificent evening which unfolds over the next few hours.

Soprano Tiffany Townsend who appeared as Princess Ninette in Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges with Opera Philadelphia during O19, with Opera Philadelphia’s General Director & President David B. Devan. Earlier this year David received the prestigious Anne d’Harnoncourt Award for Artistic Excellence from the Arts + Business Council of Greater Philadelphia in a ceremony on Wednesday, May 29.  .

After cocktail hour guests enjoyed a concert by soprano Brenda Rae and pianist Grant Loehnig, before heading to the stage for a sit down three course dinner prepared by Garces Events. Festival O19 is over now, but tickets are available for the 2020 season with the fabulous Requiem and Madame Butterfly opera’s Look for info HERE

Philly Gossip: Sally Field and Andre 3000 Jump Rope on Dispatches from Elsewere, Plus a New The Servant Teaser

Hope you’re out and about enjoying this beautiful day. I have a feeling that we are now w/i months of our first snow storm.

The new IPhone takes great photos, but not so great through windows with yellow street lights…just saying.

Thursday I started getting tips that Dispatches from Elsewhere with Jason Segel, André 3000, Sally Field, Eve Lindley and Richard E. Grant, would be filming on Locust St, but as I am in the middle of Social Season I didn’t think I’d be able to catch them. Luck be a lady, after my Friday night event I heard they were just starting to film. I was a little surprised they could secure a set on Locust St on a Friday night, but they did. I headed to my favorite deli Schlessinger’s and got a front row seat.

Although the reflective window was a bit to deal with I think you can make out Andree 3000 and Sally Field.

Although I had my camera with me, but I took these photos with my phone as I didn’t want to create a ruckus as sometimes happens when a paparazzo is on the scene. Everyone was great and recognized me, including Jason Segel who gave me a thumbs up and greeted me with a big smile when he saw me through the window at Schlessinger’s. That was very nice.

Earlier in the day they were filming at 832 Lombard Street. Thanks to a PhillyChitChat instagram follower for sending me this shot. There’s a smiling Jason in front of the window. If you’re keeping track, this is probably filming for the 6th episode of the 10 episode series. Filming is scheduled to continue through November.

South Street Oktoberfest – Plus info on Upcoming Annual Armory Oktoberfest

For the 11th year, the South Street Oktoberfest was held in front of the Brauhaus Schmitz, on the street and beneath a massive tent with seating in the 700 block of South Street. Festival goers enjoyed 10 German beers, lots of German food, German dancers and live music, with lots of sing a longs.

A half dozen guys participated in the LITER Lift Competition to win $500

  • A little under 10 minutes later, the Winner of the LITER LIFT COMPETITION got $500 and a very sore arm the next day. He also got a free liter of beer, which he was holding, but in his joy he poured it over his head.
  • Andrew Hager opened the ceremonial keg as his dad Doug watched.

Photos: The Next Les Dames d’Escoffier Heritage Farm Dinner (Women in Food)

On September 15, 2019, Les Dames d’Escoffier Philadelphia held their Fourth Annual Heritage Farm Dinner at Bartram’s Garden. This year they proudly recognize Ellen Yin, as the 2019 Outstanding in Her Field honoree.

The honor recognizes women for their accomplishments in the food, beverage or hospitality industry. Proceeds from the dinner benefited the LDEI Scholarship program.

The evening begins with a cocktail reception where guests caught up on their summer happenings, bid on wonderful silent auction items, followed by a three-course farm dinner on the beautiful grounds of Bartram’s Garden. The meal was created by twenty area chefs using locally sourced ingredients- including from The Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden. Menu includes vegan and gluten-free dishes. Wine, signature cocktails and spirit-free beverages included.

Since it’s beginning in 1976, the organization has grown to more than 1,350 members in 27 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, its grants, scholarships, mentoring and community service programs continue to be LDEI’s hallmarks. Through chapter fundraising efforts, nearly $4 million has been awarded in grants and scholarships and other philanthropic endeavors and countless volunteer hours have been logged on behalf of chapter communities.
