Around Town: Seen, Scene and To See

I’ve continued to bird watch, but not as enthusiastically as I wish I could as my business has been booming as well. I shot this cutie last week at John Heinz Nature Preserve. We’re so lucky to have this treasure so close to Philly. I can’t be everywhere so on occasion I will post photos and copy from others who have invited me, or attempted to hire me to shoot their event.

On Wednesday, the Thomas Jefferson University fashion merchandising and management (FMM)
students filled the Kanbar Performance Space with a celebration of fashion
streetwear in remembrance of one of their own. The students sold their
original clothing designs and accessories to benefit this year’s charity,
Children’s Miracle Network, which was selected in memory of Karigen Emig,
who tragically died just months after graduating from the program earlier this
year.
“Karigen loved working in the fashion industry and was motivated by the way it
brings together people from different backgrounds, inspires confidence and
creates change in the world. She deeply inspired everyone around her, not only
through her great sense of style, but also through her positive energy,
contagious work ethic, and her infectious smile,” says Julia Wazeter, Karigen’s
best friend and 2021 FMM graduate who, along with Karigen’s parents, will
attend the Pop Up Shop event.

The FMM program promotes active learning, industry engagement, and prepares forward thinking leaders to work in the global business of #fashion linktr.ee/jeffersonfashionmerchandising

Did I Photograph You This Week?

I think I read somewhere you can’t remove the label or you’ll be arrested.

I hear you, in fact over the years people often tell me they don’t see my photos. Of course I ask them did you look on CBSPhilly, Metro, Philly Style, Philly Mag or my social, and most times they say no. It’s all very confusing, are they asking me to notify them. I can’t even keep up with clients to notify them. Thankfully they have employees and Google alerts. So to solve this problem every Thursday I will put links to where the photos went. Some of the same events might appear on PhillyChitChat in the future, but not the photos used in the media outlets, unless I asked you one of my “questions of the day.”

HughE Around Town: Charitable Ladies; Bon Jovi Fights Against Homelessness; Rocky, Pauly & Will Smith Back in Philly

It’s hump day, I hope you’re week is going well. The weather has been so beautiful, and I’ve tried to catch a glimpse here or there, but thankfully I’ve been super busy. I hope if you have a chance, you will take a moment to enjoy the day, as well as each other. (It’s not lost on me at how hard these times are, my thoughts are with the universe.)

This past week I bebopped throughout the Philly area as people have started to emerge from our year long cocoon to get on with life, and the pursuit of purpose. One of the stops I made was the White Dog Cafe in Glenn Mills where I enjoyed a delicious lunch with long time friends Marilyn Russell, Jaimi Blackburn and Claire Morrison. The place was packed and there was not a free table to be had during lunch hours. Advice definitely make reservations to dine there. Everything was delicious, especially the fried pickles and chicken sandwich, and of course the company. ,

Artist Jay McClellan joined local decorators and designers to create nine unique dog houses to be auctioned off

Artist Jay McClellan along with local decorators and designers has created 9 unique dog houses that will be auctioned off online to benefit an array of local not-for-profit organizations. The doghouses will be on tour for viewing throughout the area in November. The event will kick off on Wednesday, November 10 at 2 pm at White Dog Cafe Glen Mills, 981 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills with a ribbon-cutting ceremony open to the public.

The dog houses are 47” long, 28” wide, and 43” tall, and each one has its unique design and décor based on the talents and vision of its designer. “I came up with the idea of wanting to help local not-for-profits that do so much for the community and at the same time, I wanted to showcase the incredible talent of local designers, decorators, and artists. The dog houses were the perfect amalgamation of the two,” explained Jay who is the founder of Benevolent Hound, a not-for-profit organization that promotes and provide resources, educational tools, and partnership opportunities for artists to use their talents for good, and to help ensure the humane treatment of all animals. (press release)

Each house features a unique design and a story behind the design inspiration. Jay built each house and then turned them over to the designers for them to create their showpiece. Designers can add to the exterior and interior of the houses with materials they already have but may not exceed $300 for new materials to encourage creativity and maintain fairness among the designers. Jay is designing and decorating a house for HelpUsAdopt.org, founded by former Main Line resident Becky Fawcett The other not-for-profits and designers participating include Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) with a house created by Rachel Schwartz, Brandywine Valley SPCA is paired with Greg Giegucz, CHOP Women’s Committee is paired with Annie O’Grady, Whitney Cutler and Pinemar President, Kyle Lissack, Fresh Artists is paired with Lindsey Vogel, Lower Merion Land Conservancy is paired with Jack Lundquist, Mac’s Fund is paired with Lauren Perno (who also joined us for lunch) and Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is paired with Krystal Reinhard.

On Friday, November 12, 2021, Philadelphia Show committee members gathered at Anne Hamilton’s (red scarf) home for coffee, lunch (it was delicious) to send out letters to supporters of the Philadelphia Show. The event will take place next year (2022) for the first time at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you want the first look, join us for the Preview Party on April 28 and the show will continue through May 1, 2022. It must be on your bucket list to attend an event at the Art Museum while over looking the Philadelphia skyline. Thanks to Anne Rubin, Elllen Caplan, Robin Switzenbaum (an attorney I worked with in my previous life), Susie Saunders, Ronny Conner, Carol Jones, Martha Morris, Stephanie Simmerman Lynn Gadsden, Eve Walker (my mothers childhood friend) and Hannah Henderson for coming out to address over a thousand solicitations.

After attending Mrs. Hamilton’s soiree I headed to Blue Bell Kitchen’s for a shopping pop up curated by Lynsie Blair Feinberg (Love shirt). JLor a Margate based boutique wanted to bring the shore to Wayne, PA for the summertime clients. Caroline’s Jewelry and Luxury Fashion Boutique joined the pop up from her stores in Cherry Hill and Haddonfield for a little holiday shopping in the Main Line.

Popping up for Project Home:
On Monday November 15, 2021 Jersey Rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his JBJ Soul Foundation at the Project HOME groundbreaking for a new long term recovery residence in Kensington. JBJ Soul Foundation is a funding partner of the 62 new homes on Lehigh Avenue. They will offer an affordable, safe space to make a fresh start. . Thanks 📸@projecthomephl@jbjsoulfoundation#charity#projecthome Thanks @bonjovi He has lent his name and given over $10 million dollars to help @projecthomephl home fight homelessness and drug abuse in our area, and he’s from Jersey!! Hero!! “Our mission is not just offering someone shelter, but also to end homelessness, hunger and poverty, one soul at a time,” said Bon Jovi. “We’re going to lend a helping hand to Project HOME’s outreach team, coming into this community every day to remind people that they, in fact, are not forgotten.”

Rendering from Project Home

The project’s other major funding partner is MPOWER, an initiative spearheaded by Leigh and John Middleton, the principal owner of the Phillies. MPOWER has worked on nine projects with Project HOME, which the nonprofit says improves its impact on the city.

All residents will have access to employment and educational services as part of their long-term recovery plans. Health care and substance abuse recovery programs will be accessible as needed.

The residence will include eight entry-level beds and 54 housing units, increasing Project HOME’s total housing units to more than 1,030 throughout the city.

Rocky came to town last to premiere check out more of my photos on Metro Philly here and a great review by Victor Fiorillo, who tweeted: Congrats to Sylvester Stallone for managing to turn Rocky IV into a much better movie, as we saw in Philadelphia here

It was great to see Will Smith in Philly again. He started off his book tour at Harriets Bookshop in FIshtown. He greeted fans who waited outside, signed autographs before heading inside to do a live Instagram feed, and sign books to be sold at Harriets Bookshop. Afterwards he headed to The Met for a meet and greet with a few fans, and then thrilled the hometown crowd with stories and tidbits which fill the tome. Doing the Q&A was Queen Latifah, who came up in fame around the same time as Will. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will rapped our favorite tunes before calling it a night. Spotted in the crowd were his mom Carolyn Smith sitting with bestie Ann Cantana and Will’s sister Ellen Smith , as well nearly everyone you know in Philadelphia!! Will don’t be a stranger, you’re a hometown hero. Speaking of, there was a half dozen sightings of Kevin Hart leading up to the Will Smith appearance, sparking rumors that’d he’d be there (mostly rumors started by me) but he wasn’t. As I reported he was meeting with entrepreneurs in Philly for future projects, but I want to know what was he filming in Point Breeze on November 6th ? OK let’s chit chat tomorrow. Christmas has come early to Philly, there’s so much to tell….

Brooklyn Bowl Opens in Fishtown

John Heinz Nature Preserve, so close. It’s near the airport.

Sorry I was MIA there for a few days. I’ve been shooting 2 or 3 events a day and placing columns in my media outlets. Sending photos back to clients, and finally getting to my invoices. So if you’re a client, I promise to get it to you this month, before the end of the year. I read your emails. Anywho just wanted to tell you where I was with things…. busy. As we all are as life returns to semi normal. Not really though, right.

Brooklyn Bowl opened this week in the Fishtown section, next to the Fillmore, and across the street from Rivers Casino. I attended the friends & family party two weeks ago. It was a blast. It’s a combination of a bowling alley, cool, loungy bar downstairs. A concert hall with bowling upstairs. It’s a great asset to the Philadelphia nightlife scene, especially if your looking for something different, want to enjoy a night out with friends and dance in place.

They have drinks and food

You can bowl too

It was great to see so many PhillyChitChat readers. I really appreciate your support all these years!!

It was dark so I didn’t get any names, but this couple on the right you MIGHT remember from a gesture I did. They contacted me on Instagram about 5 years ago one night. She had lost her engagement ring and wanted me to ask you all to be on the look out. The post went viral and everyone on that night was trying to locate it. She told me she had heard from so many people who were concerned. Finally the next day she contacted me to tell me it had been found. Somehow it fell off her finger and into her bed. A happy ending, and thanks to all who made the effort, I thanked them then, and today as well. What a great community we have….. chitchat with you tomorrow. Thanks Live Nation for having me.

Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D.Supports Students Needs

Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D. on Wednesday, October 20th was held at The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale

Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D. was established to honor the life of Michael Donatucci who suffered from anxiety and depression and died by suicide in July 2016. Upon this loss, Michael’s family and friends came together to create Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D. – to handle anxiety and navigate depression – with a mission to ensure that suffering individuals and their families have the education and resources available and join together the erase the stigma associated with mental illness.

Over 150 people came out to support Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D mission as they enjoyed a day of golf, followed a cocktail party where they had a chance to bid on exciting items in the silent auction including sports memorabilia, golf outings and dinner on the town.

Ronald R. Donatucci Jr., – President & Co-Founder and Natalie Foglietta – Executive Director, Donor Relations & Development

Out on the green there were food stations, as well as a Chickie & Pete’s food truck!!

After playing all day the teams headed back to the clubhouse for mingling, cock-tailing and fun.

There’s still time to donate Michael’s Giving H.A.N.D. – raising awareness, educating communities, supporting the mental well-being of teens struggling with anxiety and depression, and challenging attitudes toward mental illnesses to produce a stigma-free future through our programs.

Congratulations to the Donatucci family, on the naming of 21st and Ritner Sts for Ronald R. Donatucci Sr. Way!!
this past weekend.

Spotted In Philly – Philly’s own Kevin Hart, Kate Flannery and RHOA Sheree Whitfield

Saturday night was more than alright, it was downright beautiful. So many folks were out enjoying our wonderful City. I took this shot at 9PM at Broad & Chestnut Streets. Just a random stop at a traffic light, but every block beforehand was just as jumping with folks happy to be out and about.

Last week I covered WMMR’s Preston & Steve’s Camp Out for Hunger, dream come true to cover it wall to wall. It was fun to see how it all operates. Check out their website for photos

I met Meredith from The Office. I tried not to fan out too much. Watching The Office during the pandemic really helped me get through it. I didn’t watch the original run, but I had seen it once before a few years back. To my thrill the actress Kate Flannery is now following me on Twitter. Hi to my Twitter followers. I met a few at Camp Out For Hunger, they don’t follow me on Instagram, just Twitter. I have to do better over there, I tend to focus on Instagram mostly. BTW Dionne Warwick follows me on Twitter too, as does Rosie and Margaret Cho. It’s quite the group.

Look who’s in town. I’m thinking he’s going to be co-hosting the Will Smith book launch event tonight at The Met, the duo are working on a remake of Trains, Planes and Automobiles and just maybe this would explain why Kevin Hart is in town too. Kevin was EVERYWHERE in Philly this weekend. Whereas Will Smith has kept a very low presence in Philly for the past decade, (I hear he arrived in town in the wee hours of the morning today), Kevin has made 2 movies here, and countless appearances including at his mural dedication, and visiting his Alma Mater George Washington High School on Friday. Friday night Kevin Hart stopped by Helium Comedy Club and surprised the audience. He performed after Dave Landau headlined. My friend Eda said he was hysterical. Here’s a shot of Kevin with Dave sent to me by @heliumcomedyphl Saturday night he had dinner at South. Repost from @weare_tajeva (r)

Marc Coleman, founding CEO of The Tactile Group. Who stated on his instagram “Had the opportunity with a few other tech #entrepreneurs to chat with @kevinhart4real about his #venturecapital company and the promise that is Philadelphia.”

Thanks @jpmorgan for making this happen!
.

Philly is so popular with the Real Housewives franchise many stopped by, and love our eateries like @sonjatmorgan whose fav is @louielouiephl according to an interview in Philly Style Mag; People have tried to launch a Philly version without success cause the REAL $$ housewives of Philly husbands have said no!! That being said someone (anonymous) sent me a photo of Sheree Whitfield The Real Housewives of Atlanta filming @cariboucafe on Sunday. Girl I know it was nippy, but it’s fall not winter. She left in season 10 but she’s coming back in season 14 and my instagram readers are there for it!!

TODAY: Head To The 45th Annual PMA Craft Show

The 45th Annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show kicked off Thursday night with the preview party at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (enter at 12th and Arch). Everyone was excited that we were attending in person. To enter you must show your vaccination card, but I did notice most people were wearing their masks. What happens a lot of times when I take photos, people will ask me “Mask on, or Mask Off.” I always say whatever you are comfortable enough. Then they put their masks back on.

Selected by an esteemed panel of jurors, the 2021 Craft Show features 170 of the finest craft artists in the United States in person at the Pennsylvania Convention Center with an additional 25 artists participating online only.  The 195 talented artists represent a vast array of work in 13 diverse categories of art created by hand. In addition, we welcome select student artists from local universities to exhibit and share their work with the public.

David Rozek started Pandemic Designs 2 years before the pandemic, but he created a lot of beautiful items during the pandemic. You must see his wood figure 8 coffee table. So unique.

Everyone wears their most crafty, fashionable clothes when they attend the craft show. Often times it’s something they bought a previous year.

It’s also very casual. You can get super dressed up to spend the afternoon with your friends, or you can look sporty fall like Arthur and Duanne, who at first were we aren’t very dressed, to me saying, you’re comfortable and cool. These guys are so cool. Very philanthropic in arts & culture, as well as funding homeless endeavors.

So what are you doing today that is more important than catching the beauty of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show> It’s affordable, and will inspire you.

General Admission

Tickets can be purchased online or during the show at the Convention Center. Prices One Day: $20 Two Days: $25 Children under 12 years old: $5
