Sunday: 2nd Street Festival Takes Over Northern Liberties

The 13th Annual 2nd Street Festival will pop-up and take over Northern Liberties on Sunday, August 7, 2022, from 12:00pm Noon to 9:00pm. The all-ages celebration includes restaurants, food trucks, beer gardens, family fun, live music, artists, pop-up shops and entertainment. Street food and summertime sips will be available from a giant list of 50+ restaurants, bars, breweries and food trucks, including 15 outdoor beer and cocktail gardens. Get ready to dance in the street with live music and DJs on two main stages, plus throughout the festival, with Moonroof, Bougie and the Beasts, Bickel Brothers Band, Mobbluz, Koser, M11son, Dell-P, Solar Circuit, Upholstery, Plush in the Box, Gretchen Emery Band, Venn Sung, Dirty Soap Band, Reggae Thunder, Last Generation on Film and Swing That Cat, plus DJ MostHated, DJ Eric, DJ Frosty, DJ Xtina and Rebel Foster, DJ Nate G. and Uptown Eddie.

“2nd Street Festival is back and bigger than ever in Northern Liberties,”  said Ann Lastuvka of Virginia Belle Events, the Executive Producer for 2nd St Festival. “One of Philadelphia’s largest and greatest summer traditions returns with the largest footprint in our history, plus tons of new programs and vendors this year. We have been working for months and months to bring back this beloved event and we can’t wait to see everyone back on N. 2nd Street this summer!”

“When we started this festival, we just wanted to celebrate our neighborhood and have fun doing it. It’s amazing how much interest it draws now and how much life it brings to 2nd Street,” said Oron Daskal, co-founder of the festival and owner of North Bowl and South Bowl. “The event is important to bring attention to our neighborhood, but it also raises money for our neighborhood organizations for the services they provide for our residents and businesses.”

More information about the festival, with registration for art vendors, can be found at www.2ndstfestival.org. Thanks to generous support from Penn Treaty Special Services District for their support of this event. Stay up-to-date with festival news on Facebook or Instagram.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

For some vendors, this is their first major time back on the road and at this type of festival since the pandemic. The event will support our region’s thriving food truck, mobile food vendor economy and live music scene that was devastating to the industry, all while showcasing the red-hot food neighborhood of Northern Liberties.

Founded in 2008 by Northern Liberties business owners, Owen Kamihira of El Camino Real, William Reed of Standard Tap and Oron Daskal of North Bowl, the 2nd St Festival was established with the goal of bringing people to Northern Liberties in a fun and engaging way.

In addition to drawing visitors into the neighborhood, 2nd St Festival also raises money to support programming for two established neighborhood civic organizations, The Northern Liberties Business Improvement District and the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association.

For more information, visit www.2ndstfestival.org and follow @2ndstfestival. See you Sunday… bring your smile, and sunscreen.

Under The Big Top with Resources for Human Development

Resources for Human Development (RHD) hosted their annual fun -raiser Philly Pours back in-person this year! This years theme was a fun-filled night under the big top on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 6 pm. Guests were greeted with a fun and whimsical circus theme at City Winery located in the Philadelphia Fashion District. This year’s event featured corks (wine) and crafts (craft beer) to indulge your senses.

There was a roving magician to delight the crowd with the sleight of hand tricks. ( I love a good party, especially a themed party)

The party benefits.RHD provides a array of children’s services that support around 1,000 children in need each year:

  • RHD Stepping Stones is a long-term partial hospital program for children with emotional and behavioral challenges.
  • RHD Children’s Outreach Services Program (COSP) is an intensive community-based services to emotionally or developmentally challenged youth less than 21 years old
  • RHD Early Intervention provides home and community-based treatment for infants/toddlers with an early medical diagnosis or developmental delays.
  • RHD School Therapeutic Services is an intensive, short-term behavioral health service offered in selected schools in the Philadelphia School District.
  • RHD High Fidelity Wraparound works with youth who are first offenders and have a history of serious behavioral health issues, ages 10-17 years old.
Marco Giordano, C.P.A. Chief Executive Officer of Resources for Human Development

The evening started out with a wine/beer tasting event held in the wine cellar of City Winery.

Legendary DJ Patty Jackson was on hand. Later in the evening she emceed the event.

Resources for Human Development is a national human services nonprofit that supports more than 160 human service programs across the country, serving tens of thousands of people every year with caring and effective programs addressing intellectual and developmental disabilities, behavioral health, homelessness, addiction recovery and more.

Then guests headed into the main room for dinner, and the program.

Philly Pours benefits RHD’s mission to support people of all abilities with effective, innovative, and person-centered programs—addressing behavioral health, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), addiction recovery, children and families, and people experiencing homelessness.

NRG Pledges $250,000 to Nemours Children’s Health; Rupert Grint and Servant S4 Return

Pictured (l-r) are Mark Mumford, executive vice president, Nemours Children’s Health Delaware Valley Operations; Keri Murschell, director of Innovation, NRG Home; and Geoff Snelling, director of Customer Acquisition, NRG Home.

On Tuesday, July 12, Nemours Children’s Health received a
commitment of $250,000 from NRG, one of the nation’s leading electricity and natural gas
suppliers. NRG’s generosity will improve the well-being of children with behavioral health
challenges by reducing barriers and facilitating long-term access to treatment. Funds will be
raised through NRG’s Choose to Give program, which has been giving its customers the
opportunity to support local nonprofits since 2017. Nemours Children’s has received $200,000 to
date as a beneficiary of Choose to Give.

“Not only is the new $250,000 pledge amount significant, but the cause is particularly noteworthy,” said David Schrader, communications manager of NRG East. “The money will be contributed to Nemours’ behavioral health programming. We all know that mental and behavioral health among young people is a big concern these days.”

The new $250,000 commitment to Nemours Children’s Health will be donated through NRG’s Choose to Give program. The pledge will directly support Nemours Children’s Health and its ongoing behavioral health programming, which aims to increase awareness and access to long-term treatment by integrating mental health services into primary pediatric care. The hope is to address emotional, developmental, behavioral, and mental disorders in kids. The approach will include detection and prevention through early screening and therapeutic interventions, paired with scaled access to mental health support through technology and telemedicine. Since Choose to Give launched in 2017, the program has contributed more than $6 million to seven nonprofit recipients.

They’re back: Servant Season 4 has returned to Philly to film the final season. I mentioned in April that M. Night Shyamalan was taking a break from filming Servant, to film a movie called “Knock at the Cabin” with Rupert Grint, Dave Bautista and Nikki Amuka-Bird. (Info) That wrapped and now they are back to film the final season, and final episodes. This week they are in the Fitler Square area, filming on the 2100 Spruce Street as well as in Fitler Square. I stopped by the set the other day, so if you don’t want to spoil it for you, stop reading now. Usually I don’t reveal too much of the plot, but these photos say a lot.

Story line: A Philadelphia couple is in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.

On this super hot day summer day, the scene was set in fall. The poor actors and extras were dressed in coats and heavy clothing.

Thanks to PCC reader Andrew Cameron Zahn who shared these photos from a scene before I arrived on the scene. We love that Servant is set in Philly, and we’re just not a film set for this show. This scene included a SEPTA bus

and Rupert Grint who plays Julian Pearce, brother to Dorothy Turner played by Lauren Ambrose. I believe that is Ishana Night Shyamalan in this photo. She is co producer of Servant, as well as director of several of the episodes.

When I arrived to the set, at Fitler Square. I noticed there were a lot of large fans on the set, and someone filled me in they were preparing for a torrential rain storm.

The actors were dressed for chillier weathers. If you watch Servant, as I do, you know these are members of a cult that live in the park behind the Turner’s house, whose backyard boundary is Panama Street.

The cult lives in tents through out the park.

Production Assistant on the left, extra on the right. I’m sweating just looking at this photo.

At one point costumed extras filmed a scene with

Nell Tiger Free plays the Turner’s nanny Leanne Grayson.

I left after a bit as I had dinner with friends in Bucks County, but returned for an epic scene at night which was a torrential rainstorm with lightning. No doubt the extras enjoyed this scene after a day in the sun. It was really neat to see. Check out the video below.

Have a great day. Stay cool. Chit chat with you tomorrow.

Another Chance to See Beyond Van Gogh

I don’t know about you, but I did miss Beyond Van Gogh when it was in the Philadelphia area. I was busy, I wasn’t 100 percent sure what the exhibit was about, and when things were right for me to see it, it was sold out.

We’re in luck. It’s landed in Atlantic City at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City which debuted the “Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” exhibit last week. The exhibit uses over 300 Van Gogh’s works by reproducing them digitally and projecting them onto screens, walls and floors.

The 30,000-square-foot exhibit, comprised of more than 4 trillion content pixels, begins with the introduction hall, where visitors learn about the artist through narratives, and his own written words to his brother, Theo. But before you enter the exhibit, make sure you take a photo at the Starry Night pop up.

In the main exhibit room there are benches for you to enjoy the changing art work, or you can stand to enjoy the 360 degree view.

Marc Berman, Cindy Fertsch, Susan Berman and Krystle J Bailey, Shore Local Newsmagazine

Since this was the opening night, the Hard Rock hosted a VIP/Media party for friends, family and supporters to enjoy before they had a chance to see Vincent Van Gogh Immersive Experience

The Poplar features brand-new apartments (studio to 4 bedrooms) and luxury amenities including an expansive rooftop terrace and pool club with panoramic views of the City with the most stunning rooftop pool in the city with 3 pools, hot tubs, cabanas and grills.

Beings it was a summer party I asked a few guests what their Summer Song would be for 2022: Morgan Fisher told me definitely it’s Sticky by Drake for her; Becca Barth will be vibing to Heat Waves by Glass Animals, while Shannon C. Ryan has Carbide Coins by Fellman on loop and Michael Flores like Downtwon by Honey Dijon.

I headed upstairs to the Solmar Summer Soiree where I found a fashionable, happy people excited to be out , see and be seen especially after the long hiatus; There was so much to enjoy as the Solmar had ample room to sun, swim, and lounge. *BTW what isn’t shown in these photos is the other relaxation, play areas which can be seen here.
